Bahan

PVC 4 inch panjang +/- 20 cm

Tutup pipa 4 inch : 2 buah

Aluminium foil

Plat L dari bahan isolator

Wifi USB

Cable ties

Baut dan klem 1 inch

Access Controlled poster This morning Michael Geist tweeted about BBC’s article “UN slat

Access Controlled poster

This morning Michael Geist tweeted about BBC’s article “UN slated for stifling net debate”, detailing the incident causing the hue and cry which has sprung up about the censorship of the poster at the Internet Governance Forum in Egypt.

The poster was promotional material for the OpenNet Inititiative’s academic book “Access Comtrolled” on display at the reception held by two of the book’s authors, Ron Deibert and Rafal Rohozinksi at the Internet Governance Forum in Egypt. Apparently “complaints” were made about “The first generation of Internet controls consisted largely of building firewalls at key Internet gateways; China’s famous ‘Great Firewall of China’ is one of the first national Internet filtering systems.”

The book is a global project from the OpenNet Initiative (ONI), a collaboration of the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk Centre for International Studies, Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, and the SecDev Group.

–Global Voices Advocacy: IGF2009: #UNfail? by Renata Avila

“1. We were told that the banner had to be removed because of the reference to China. This was repeated on several occasions, in front of about two dozen witnesses and officials, including the UN Special Rapporteur For Human Rights, who asked that I send in a formal letter of complaint.

2. Earlier, the same officials asked us to stop circulating a small invite to the event because it contained a mention of Tibet. They even underlined it in showing it to me. Because the event was just about to start, we said that we would not be distributing any more of these invitations so it was a moot point.

3. We asked repeatedly to see any rules or regulations governing this act. They did not give us any, only referring to the “objections of a member state.”

4. There were in fact many posters and banners in many of the rooms that I attended, including others in our own. The video itself shows us, at one point, taking one of the other posters we have and offering to cover up the original one. They objected to that and told us this banner must be removed.

On another matter of clarification:

The UN officials did not throw the banner on the ground. They asked us to remove it and one of our staff placed it on the ground for us to consider what to do. That’s where we had the discussion. When we refused to remove it, their security guards bundled it up and took it away.

Hope this helps to clarify.
Ron”

–Ron Deibert’s account of the incident, posted in boingboing comments

My favorite was this comment from Cory Doctorow’s boingboing page:

Antinous / Moderator | #9 | 15:10 on Sun, Nov.15

Why pick Egypt as the venue for a convention on internet governance? Was Mordor booked?

In a statement Reporters Without Borders said: “”It is astonishing that a government that is openly hostile to internet users is assigned the organization of an international meeting on the internet’s future.”

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8354824.stm

No Usage Based Billing

[Mordor's reach was spreading toward the Shire, which was in fact why Frodo and Sam had to head off to fight it. Freedom is always worth fighting for.]

Although it would be breathtakingly easy to point to Egypt as a country where suppression of free speech is endemic, I have to wonder is Canada really any better? The eagerness Canada’s British Columbia government is showing in suppression of free speech in and around the upcoming Vancouver Olympics makes me think it really wouldn’t matter where the Internet Governance Forum was held.

The technological changes to the world brought about by the internet threatens those who forsee an erosion of their power to dominate others. The real problem for them is that the internet makes both supression of free speech and repression of civil liberties more difficult. It’s easier to do bad stuff out of the light of public scrutiny as shown by the flurry of video, articles and blogs about this incident.

This is precisely why net neutrality is so important.

It’s also why Usage Based Billing must not be implemented, since one of the worst things UBB will do to Canada is make the internet less affordable for most Canadian citizens, but even worse, unaffordable for many. Talk about disenfranchisement.

Written by: Greg Rucka
Illustrated by: Matthew Southworth
Colored by: Lee Loughridge
Design by: Keith Wood
Edited by: James Lucas Jones
Published by: Oni Press

This comic begins on some high action, much like many made-for-tv movies I recall from my youth…and from the initial climax we’re taken back to a day or so earlier where the story really begins, and follow events through to the opening pages, and then on to the rest of the issue’s story.

We’re introduced to Dex, a private investigator with a gambling issue. Having racked up plenty of debt, she’s offered a job that–rather than her being paid she’s to take in exchange for her gambling debt being forgiven. She’s sent to find the granddaughter of a powerful woman; and quickly discovers that there are other interested parties.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this, but figured it’s the first issue of a new series, so why not? I’d give it a look-see. I’m no fan of the $3.99 price point, but I found myself toward the later part of the issue turning each page expecting to see the first page of a lotta pages of ads. Yet, to my surprise, the story just kept right on going up to the 2nd to last page in the issue. So while this carries that $4 price, it’s a lengthy read, which is quite satisfying.

THe art has a very stylistic feel to it. The color and linework is a bit gritty, and there’s a lot of color shift for tone throughout the issue. Flipping through it, there are multiple page segments that have an overall blue tone or a green, or black and white, and what-have-you. I didn’t really notice it as I read, but this shifting played a nice role in setting scenes apart and setting the mood in each.

The character and her immediate supporting cast come across as fairly stereotypical and formulaic; the situation she finds herself in is also rather cliche.

But somehow, I don’t really have a problem with that. I was pulled into the story, and as with most things: a foundation must be put in place to build upon. This issue has the introduction to the characters and settings, and sure they’re generic right now–but I’m confident from past enjoyment of Rucka’s work that there’ll be more information in the next few issues to make these characters unique and move them beyond mere stereotype.

While I often use the comparison, this was like both a made for tv movie in structure…but works quite well as a pilot episode, introducing things, posing questions to the audience, and leaving me interested in what comes next.

If you like this sort of PI drama, or Rucka’s work, or the art, or any combination of those I highly recommend this. As-is on its own it’s a decent piece of work, worth the $4 cover price to check it out and decide your own feelings on the issue.

Story: 7.5/10
Art: 7.5/10
Whole: 8/10

Pani Kazanecka umarła. W nocy.

I ja słuchałam. Wraz z nim.

It looks to be a manageable lot on this week’s ComicList, at least for me. That’s just as well, as I used a Borders buy-four-get-the-fifth-free deal as an excuse to overspend on manga last weekend.

Fire Investigator Nanasd (CMX), story by Izo Hashimoto and art by Tomoshige Ichikawa, is the kind of book that makes me happy for a handful of reasons. It’s not brilliant, but it’s entertaining, and it combines mystery and adventure in pleasing ways. It’s got an appealing, highly competent female lead and puts her through the arson version of The Silence of the Lambs as she fights fires and looks into their origins with the aid of a serial arsonist. And, unrelated to the book’s quality but still welcome, the first search result for the series actually takes you to the publisher of the book, which almost never happens. I know. Weird things make me happy.

One of my Borders purchases this weekend was the first volume of You Higuri’s Ludwig II (Juné), which is… well… weird. As Kate Dacey noted in her review, it contains the holy trinity of Higuri historical fantasy: “beautiful people in beautiful clothes, political intrigue, and darkly handsome protagonists who are touched by madness.” The titular protagonist is one of those rulers every citizen of a monarchy should dread: a delusional opera queen. As is usually the case with Higuri yaoi (or near-yaoi), the gorgeous art and weird nuances are carrying me past the sordid but strangely listless seme-uke shenanigans between Ludwig and his devoted manservant. We’ll see if those features continue to offer sufficient compensation to make me want to track down volume two.

Do you miss the days when Greg Rucka did creator-owned work? Well, there’s good news for you, as he returns to Oni (home to his Queen and Country and Whiteout) with a new detective series, Stumptown, illustrated by Matthew Southworth. Once again, he seems to be following the gritty misadventures of a strong female protagonist, a private investigator named Dex in the midst of a high-stakes missing-person case. The art looks terrific, and Rucka certainly has a strong track record with undiluted noir.

Viz unleashes a thundering herd of titles, many of which I like very much, but I’ll fixate on one because it’s great and I feel like I’ve been neglecting it: Hikaru no Go, written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, which reaches its 17th volume. This looks to be a particularly eventful installment. Protagonist Hikaru has lost his ghostly go mentor Sai, and he faces off with his rival, gifted prodigy Akira. It’s a great series, smartly written by Hotta and beautifully drawn by Obata.

Chat rooms monitored. Blogs deleted. Websites blocked. Search engines restricted. People imprisoned for simply posting and sharing information.

The Internet is a new frontier in the struggle for human rights. Governments – with the help of some of the biggest IT companies in the world – are cracking down on freedom of expression …

The web is a great tool for sharing ideas and freedom of expression. However, efforts to try and control the Internet are growing. Internet repression is reported in countries like China, Vietnam, Tunisia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Syria. People are persecuted and imprisoned simply for criticising their government, calling for democracy and greater press freedom, or exposing human rights abuses, online.

But Internet repression is not just about governments. IT companies have helped build the systems that enable surveillance and censorship to take place. Yahoo! have supplied email users’ private data to the Chinese authorities, helping to facilitate cases of wrongful imprisonment. Microsoft and Google have both complied with government demands to actively censor Chinese users of their services.

Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right. It is one of the most precious of all rights. We should fight to protect it.

Database of censored material

Amnesty International is working with the OpenNet Initiative (ONI) to help raise awareness of internet censorship around the world.

The ONI is a collaboration among the Citizen Lab, Munk Centre for International Studies, University of Toronto, the Advanced Network Research Group at Cambridge University, the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School UK, and the Oxford Internet Institute, plus partner non- governmental organizations worldwide.

The aim of the ONI is to document empirically patterns of Internet content filtering and surveillance worldwide behind national firewalls over an extended period of time. The ONI employs a unique methodology that combines in-field investigations by partners and associates within the countries under investigation and a suite of technical interrogation tools that probe the Internet directly for forensic evidence of content filtering and surveillance technologies.

Its 11 country reports have documented the scope, scale and sophistication of numerous filtering regimes worldwide, and have helped verify the use of US commercial filtering technologies, such as Smartfilter and Websense that are used in some ways to underpin these regimes. The ONI’s flash map of global filtering shows the results of these investigations.

The work of ONI is supported by the Information Program of the Open Society Institute and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. ONI’s mapping work is supported by the International Development Research Centre (Canada).

The examples of censored material used for Irrepressible.info have been drawn from websites that have been blocked in one of the following countries – China, Iran, Myanmar, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Syria and Vietnam, and are based on latest testing results available from each country.

The universe is bait. And in 1969 something got hungry. Professor Hossad Mussef, Professor and Chair

The universe is bait.

And in 1969 something got hungry. Professor Hossad Mussef, Professor and Chair of the nascent hyperphysics department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and lauded as the smartest man in the world, was the only man who suspected something.

The press gave Mussef the title as the world’s smartest man at the end of the second world war when the Japanese superhero Oni transported the atomic bomb meant for Hiroshima to the dark side of the moon and Mussef, only 10-years-old, improvised another atomic bomb.

And while he was championed as a war hero, the young boy revealed his moral standard to the world, isolating himself from altruistic scientists and superheroes. He was the Manhattan Project on a whim. His engineering and ethical caprice evident and 140,000 Japanese ghosts on his soul, Mussef didn’t blink. He grinned and called himself Professor Phenomenon.

Hopscotching from Columbia to MIT to Yale to Duke, Professor Phenomenon collected degree after degree while helping to structure Prometheus (the Paranormal Research Organization’s replacement agency) in 1950. After his sprints in academia, Professor Phenomenon ensconced himself in superscience, discovering subspace, dating movie stars, giving soundbites* to the press, and battling the theoretical villainy of other giga-intellects like Googolplex, the Polymath, and Frank Lloyd Wrong.

And, of course, the Atomic Brain, whom he helped create.

But in 1969 the Professor needed help. He collected a squad the post-humans who would be of use to him (without informing the Front, the U.S. Government, the United Nations, or the Kaleidoscope– an intergalactic collection of sentient species that Earth nominally belonged to).

TROIKA: A soviet adventurer who discovered the trinity coil.

THE SATURN CENTURION: A shape-changing alien that Professor Phenomenon liberated from the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The Saturn Centurion later became the Professor’s first wife.

GOLEM: A Jewish rabbi whose spirit left his body while the SS carved a star of David into his chest. His soul, instead of falling to sheol, invested in an unfeeling stone body, enabling the gentle teacher to enact great cruelty.

TIME-LAPSE: One of the first post-humans born to the subterranean race of humans beneath Arizona in The Underland. Ostensibly blind because she constantly sees the future.

SUNSPOT: A young woman possessed by a sentient solar storm (this energy force would later go on to empower Pharaoh and Helios).

This team proceeded to travel to Olympus Mons (the largest mountain formation on Mars) to activate certain Cosmic machinery left there by an ancient alien race known as the Progenitors.

The machinery forced whatever predator angling to consume the universe to assume a matter form which the team fought for 20 months. The Konsumer (as Troika dubbed the cosmic predator) killed the entire team other than the Saturn Centurion. (Though Golem was able to reconstitute himself out of Martian minerals).

During the final conflict, the team of Phenomenauts were still unable to overcome the Konsumer until an even greater force manifested and ate the Konsumer. Professor Phenomenon to reconsidered the scenario, forming the theory that the universe was being used as a bait to attract food by some even grander entity.

The remnants of the original Phenomenauts returned to earth, sticking by one another when the U.S. Government accused the team of defecting to the USSR. And again when agents of the Forever Reich attempted to dispatch Golem, and again when the Kaliedoscope arrested the Saturn Centurion for “crimes against reality.” The Phenomenauts very publically grew into a family.

Professor Phenomenon eventually took a role as science adviser for Prometheus and President Carter, but retired when Regan took office, setting up a small technology firm (Phenomenal Ventures) that was occasionally hired by Prometheus to design headquarters for operatives or observation posts until a hostile takeover by SummaCorp. During these years Professor Phenomenon had children, became a widower**, remarried, and had a final child, Kadir Mussef (aka The Mastermind).

He also fought off Quetzalcoatl 8 when the Bleed was discovered during the Parallel Wars. Following the Parallel Wars, Professor Phenomenon and his children to explored the Bleed (except when he took a two year sabbatical, after which he created an AIDS vaccine in 1997).

In her book Too Much of a Muchness, Dr. Tara Chace theorized that the only reason Professor Phenomenon kept the group together was to give himself a moral background the scientific community supposed he lacked. She believe the Professor suffers from some post-human form of dissocial personality disorder. That humans are like grass to him. Ubiquitous but unimportant.

In late 2008 the Phenomenauts’ Manhattan headquarters remote contacted Prometheus, informing the organization that the Phenomenauts had not established contact with Earth in five days. They remain missing…

MODERN PHENOMENAUT LINEUP (Missing)

DROWN: Fume’s fiancee. The daughter of Oceanus, ousted king of Aquaria.

FUME: Prof. Phenomenon’s first son born to his extra-terrestrial wife, the Saturn Centurion, was composed of gas. The Professor constructed a suit so that he could interact with the physical world.

GOLEM: The same cantankerous, raging Jew now built out of rust-colored Mars rocks.

PROFESSOR PHENOMENON: 85 years old, though he doesn’t look a day over fifty. Smartest man in the world. Egyptian ethnic who emmigrated to the U.S. in 1936. Claims his super-intelligence came from tutoring by his babysitter, Nikolai Tesla.

RADIANT: Prof. Phenomenon’s first daughter born to his extra-terrestrial wife. Made up of living plasma, though after enough training she could form a “skin” of anti-force that allowed her to interact with the physical world.

UNDERWHELM: Self-hating Underlander who can strip abilities from post-humans. Increasingly it seems these depowerings are permanent. (Perhaps one of Prof. Phenomenon’s many illegitimate children.)

DR. WHEN: Though not a full member of the team, the time traveler likes crashing with the Phenomenauts in this time period.

PHENOMENAUTS’ FOES

The Atomic Brain: The nuclear genius who believes destruction to be the one true benchmark to measure greatness. Because otherwise, this world-class threat’s brain would be second to Professor Phenomenon.

Bio-Hazard: A grad-student who worked with Prof. Phenomenon in the 90’s. His vaccine to cure AIDS did not work. He only survived by converting his body into something horrible to survive the infection.

Dr. Distortion (III): Not a biological descendant but a big fan, the third Dr. Distortion uses the magnetic tech of the original Dr. Distortion to breach the Bleed, the extropic space between universes.

Googolplex (II): The “daughter” of the original Googolplex is a sentient computer virus that wrecks national economies for fun. It is believed the Sub-Prime Mortgage Crisis to be at least some part her doing.

Professor Peril: Former Prof. Phenom student in the late 50s. Turned raging robotics master.

Reactor: Former grad student of Prof. Phenomenon. Hoped to design an Atomic Brain-killer suit, but became infused with deadly theta radiation.

Silverback: Son of the super-intelligent gorilla Doc Kong and former student of Professor Phenomenon, Silverback originally menaced the phenomenauts as part of the post-human law firm, Jacobi & Associates.

The Second Renaissance: A group of Mussef’s former students who banded together to end “myth’s rule over humanity” by targetting magic-users and institutions of faith.

Warzone, the Angry Arena: A living intra-dimensional space designed by Frank Lloyd Wrong.

It’s been a week since I lasted posted an entry, and it’s not due to laziness. I’ve actually been somewhat busy for the past few days. Aside from the insurmountable amounts of homework that I’ve been receiving, I’ve also been busy writing. I applied at Suite101, and I was hired, so I can now say that I am officially a freelance writer. Kind of cool, no? Anyway, I’ve been busy writing for that site, and my commitment to GamerSyndrome continues. I’m adding more and more credentials to my resume, and that’s something I am totally stoked about, because by volunteering here and there, freelancing at a few places, and so on, I’ll have more references and experience under my belt. I know I’m just getting started on something that will undoubtedly take a long time to reach the apex of, but I have no problem with paying my dues. If I want to get somewhere, I’ll have to work hard, and I’m completely comfortable with that.

Aside from my writing, school has been taking a ton of my time. With the mediocre teacher I have, it’s bound to stay that way for the rest of the semester. The guy’s lectures are so convoluted that when I get home and try to do my homework, I am completely lost. It’s ridiculous. I took my second quiz for that class, and I did even worse than the first time. I wasn’t the only one either. Quite a few people scored below me. I’ve get a test next week, and I have no doubt in my mind it will be difficult. Damn this class, and damn that teacher!

This past Saturday I worked the Ladyhawke concert. I was put by the low box. It was really easy, and I had a clear view of the stage, so I enjoyed the show. Well, I enjoyed Ladyhawke; all the other bands sucked. I really wanted to get a Ladyhawke shirt, but I felt rushed to leave, and I’m being extra careful with my money. I can always get a shirt online anyway.

I haven’t played video games all that much lately. Maybe later this week I can finish Oni. We’ll see.

How is it that I didn’t know that Ted Naifeh was working on graphic novels adaptations of with young

How is it that I didn’t know that Ted Naifeh was working on graphic novels <del datetime="2009-10-08T18:23:36+00:00">adaptations of</del> with young-adult fantasy <del datetime="2009-10-08T18:23:36+00:00">novels by</del> novelist Holly Black? Admittedly, I’m not familiar with Black’s work, but I’m crazy about a lot of Naifeh’s comics (particularly Courtney Crumrin and Polly and the Pirates from Oni). And Graphix doesn’t even seem to have done the “bury the <del datetime="2009-10-08T18:23:36+00:00">adaptor’s</del> illustrator’s credit” thing that plagues so many projects of this type.

Anyway, there are two volumes out so far: The Good Neighbors: Kin (in hardcover and paperback) and The Good Neighbors: Kith (just in hardcover so far). (By the way, does the Scholastic store site look as horrible in other browsers as it does in Firefox?) I’m not wild about stories that involve someone being kidnapped to faerie, with the exception of Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Still, it’s Naifeh doing work in narrative territory where he generally excels, and I have a coupon from Barnes & Noble. It is settled.

Thanks to Michael May for tipping me off to the books in his post at Robot 6.
