Interview: Sandi Tighello, Editor of Onya Magazine Sandi Tighello has good news. Not only has this

Interview: Sandi Tighello, Editor of Onya Magazine

Sandi Tighello has good news. Not only has this lovely Australian-Italian bella launched a patriotic Aussie mag in ONYA to much acclaim, but in recent news, she’s defying the odds and taking her little beauty to print in 2010. Many people who launch online mags will never even dream of taking the leap, but here she is in all her glory, revealing how and why she became a wordsmith, in a testament to why she doesn’t let anything get in her way. You can catch Sandi writing for ONYA, Trespass Mag, and in her personal blog, www.inthethickofit.wordpress.com Plus, look out for her as she releases some delectable coffee-table books soon as well. This is one girl you need to read to believe. Enjoy!

Tell us about your wordsmith career path so far:

I started writing when I was six years old – I’ve always loved it. I used to write poems, songs, musings, stories – I still have quite a few of my old journals – most importantly the one I wrote when I was six that declared, ‘When I grow up I want to be a writer.’

It wasn’t until I hit high school that I pursued the idea further – working on the school newspaper and the end of year poetry anthology. When I was 15 I started writing for my local newspaper on a fortnightly basis – reviewing films and books and writing opinion pieces. In Year 12 I entered a competition being run by The Age. It involved writing a piece on maintaining balance throughout Year 12 and the winner would have their piece published in the newspaper. I got home from school on the Friday at 4.15pm and remembered that the competition closed at 5pm that day, and, even though I had every good intention to submit something, I had not written a word. In fact, I completely forgot all about it. So, I sat down, wrote and then submitted my piece without even reading back over it. On the Monday afternoon I received an email, from the Editor of The Age, saying I’d won the competition and that I had, ‘The gift of words.’ And that was it. From then on, I knew writing was exactly what I would do, because I loved it, and because someone else out there did too.

From there I wrote for university newspapers, print publications, street press, blogs and online publications. I was offered the position of Editor for Mink Magazine when I was 22, and stayed with them for two years. I then launched my own publication, Onya Magazine, on June 1st, this year.

Writers that work from home tend to comment about the merits of being able to work their own hours, or work in their PJ’s all day. Is that something that appeals to you, or do you tend to structure your day around a routine to keep you more productive?

My days really do vary. Some days I have a brilliant routine – rise early, exercise, healthy breakfast, work, lunch break, work, cup of tea, work and switch off. Other days, I roll straight from my bed to my laptop (or sometimes have the laptop in bed) and am in my PJ’s until 3pm, having worked all day straight. Some days I’m in meetings, dashing from one meeting to another all over Melbourne’s CBD. Some days there are interviews to conduct, places to visit, things to see. I like the variety. I like being able to take a couple of hours out of my day to visit an art exhibit, or roam the streets, or catch up with a friend, or see a movie. In saying that, if have a fairly luxurious day, I usually pay for it by working late that night and on weekends. But I’m happy with the trade.

In addition to having a general media degree, you also have a postgraduate diploma in media production. Was it always important for you to have an additional qualification in production so that you can work with various technologies/opportunities that could take your writing to new heights?

I have a Bachelor of Arts from Melbourne University, with a double major in cultural studies and cinema studies. Throughout the course I also studied history, politics and creative writing. I loved it. Arts was, despite some people’s preconceptions of it being a course people head into when they don’t know what they want to do in life, exactly what I wanted to do. It was my number one preference. I initially thought I should do Journalism at RMIT University – I even completed the entrance test and got accepted – but the thought of studying short hand and interview skills and analysing media issues for three years made me want to tear my curly hair out. I wanted to do Arts because I wanted to know more about the things I loved; history and politics and popular culture and film, and I wanted to debate and research and be immersed in it. Journalism was so restricted, and I felt it better to be more educated, rather than more qualified.

The Diploma in Media Production was, honestly, my way of staying at University for another year (without having to do Honours) – because I loved Uni, and the lifestyle (good training for a freelancer) and the people. The environment is hard to let go, and being at Melbourne Uni was honestly a dream – the lecturers, the resources, the best place for what I loved. The Post Grad course I did included some hands on photography skills – which is another passion of mine – as well as more of the hands on side of media – tech and computers. It was something I was interested in, but knew little about, and it has been invaluable – particularly in this era, when online and digital media is not just the future, but also the present.

Why did you create Onya Magazine, and how have the first few months since its launch been like for you?

There were many reasons as to why I decided to create Onya Magazine, the main ones are because:

I wanted to do something that was mine. That I controlled, and drove, and could do as I felt with. Something I was passionate about. Something that I loved.

I was sick of perceptions, from abroad, that we’re a country of singlet wearing bogans that have kangaroos hopping down our city streets.

I was sick of reading about clothing designers from Denmark and shampoo from the US and shoes from Spain, when there were people and businesses here making the same things and getting no exposure.

I was sick, and still am, of picking up item after item and seeing them all imprinted with Made in China.

I was over mainstream Australian media that constantly over exaggerates, people bash and saturates everything – I wanted to create, and portray, a slice of Australia that was positive, whilst still being honest.

And mainly because I was sick of Australians themselves – for thinking that Australia Day is just an excuse to get drunk. For not supporting our artists and designers and creatives. For thinking that to be somebody you’ve got to hop on an aeroplane and go somewhere that matters, because Australia doesn’t. For thinking anything that’s associated with Australia is cringe-worthy. You see, I believe, and my Australia is one that’s filled with class, and humour, and intelligence, and beauty and a hell of a lot of talent. And I wanted to showcase and support that.

On December the 1st, Onya will celebrate its sixth month as an online publication. We are still so young, but I often think of Onya in much the same terms as Australia – a country so young, bursting with talent and ideas, but with such a long way to go. The first few months of being at the helm of Onya were great – and they still are now. Each week we’ve grown, and each week, each day, I’ve learnt something new. I’m so fortunate to have such an incredible bunch of writers to work and collaborate with, and to be able to provide their work a platform to be published on has been one thing I’m very proud of.

What were some of the difficulties that you encountered when working on such a big project? And how did it feel to complete it?

I still don’t feel like I’ve completed it. It’s a constant work in progress. The ideas are never ending. But, when it went live an hour before our launch party on June 1st, I felt incredibly proud. Because whatever it was at that moment in time, it was good. And it could only get better. And it has. And will continue to.

One thing I’m very insistent on is quality – because I believe, particularly in online media, there is too much rubbish around. I will not publish something of terrible quality, or something that I do not believe falls in line with Onya’s values, just to get website hits. My stance on quality has proved challenging at times – I’ve not accepted work from writers because it’s under par, and Onya doesn’t do under par. I’ve knocked back more businesses (for content and advertising) than I can remember because their company may be Australian owned, but their product is certainly not Australian made. It’s about ethics and values and I won’t budge on those.

The other challenges are time and money. There never seems to be enough of either. I do most things at Onya and I am most people. I’m the advertising sales manager, and the editor, and the director, and the online content manager, and the receptionist and the list goes on. My inbox seems eternally full. My to-do list never ending. And just when you get on top of it, it fills up again.

You can spend all day working on something, but see very little in terms of results. You can have a lot of brilliant ideas, but not necessarily the money to bring them all to life.

Doing so many things is what I wanted though – I wanted to captain the ship. I wanted to steer it. And I’m learning so much, and meeting so many amazing people.

You also do a little bit of blogging, and write columns for various print and online publications. How important is it for you to stay abreast of other editorial opportunities despite having created your own in Onya?

Oh, it’s incredibly important. I’m trying to balance it further, to ensure I don’t spend every moment on Onya, because it’s not healthy and you can lose sight and focus very quickly. There is so much more I’m interested in beyond Onya and I still want to be able to nurture that. It’s important for my writers that I keep it up too – so I don’t become stale or my ideas stagnant. And it keeps my foot in the door with other publications, other personal opportunities. I’m the Editor and Director of Onya, but first and foremost I’m a writer, and I always will be.

What is a typical day in the life of Sandi Tighello, freelance writer?

Well, it’s pretty typical for me to not have a whole day devoted to writing anymore, because so much of my time is devoted to Onya, but a typical day (and one that I’m working towards perfecting and re-enacting more) is; kick starting the day with some exercise and then a big breakfast and coffee, replying to emails, writing or attending to Onya editing/uploading, having a break, organising future articles, liaising with writers, and then doing some personal writing for my columns, blog or future book – or even some photography.

What are some of the perks associated with your job? And what are some of the difficulties?

The freebies. Beauty products, books, tickets…the freebies are a definite perk. It’s funny, I went to see a movie the other day and I was almost slightly annoyed that I had to purchase my ticket (I’m only joking, well…half joking). Also the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made. The media industry really isn’t that big and I’ve made some truly incredible friends from it. The best perk, hands down, would have to be what you can do and learn. One day you’re interviewing a musician, or a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor, the next you’re creating a media kit, or brainstorming with a team of creative folk and then the next day you’re writing a review on a theatre show and having a nice dinner.

Time is a perk. When everyone is commuting, stuck in an office, then commuting again, it makes what I do seem rather luxurious. But it’s not. And that’s one of the difficulties – some people don’t take you seriously. They view your work as frivolous. It used to bother me, but I couldn’t care less anymore. A steady wage is another difficulty. And because the media industry is so small, there never appears to be enough jobs available – especially when companies are chopping people from publications left right and centre and using the GFC as an excuse.

But you don’t launch into this career without knowing that. So, I believe, if you accept it before you launch into a career as a writer, then you shouldn’t complain. Because I don’t know many other people, honestly, that wake up every morning with the same zest for life and enthusiasm that I do.

Have you consulted any mentors or guides to make the process of establishing writing career a little easier?

I haven’t had any one mentor that I’ve consulted with over and over again, it has been more of a case of collecting small gems of wisdom along the way. I’ve certainly met with various people over the past couple years – some incredibly accomplished, famous authors, like Tara Moss, that I’ve had coffee with for an hour and have drilled and had wonderful advice passed onto me, but I’ve also been just as inspired by the randoms that I have come across – the bookshop owner, the café entrepreneur. If you’re interested, everyone has a story and you can learn something from every person you meet.

What is the freelance feature writing like? Did you find it difficult to establish contacts that enabled you to get some freelance work?

It’s usually fairly easy to find a contact, but sometimes getting work from them can be hard. Once you’re in though, you’re usually in. And if you’re a good egg, you can usually stay around for a while. Feature writing is great – so many words and so much to say – but doing so effectively and clearly can be difficult.

Who are you writing for at the moment? / What are some of your current projects?

I’m writing my column, ‘The Small Matter Of…’ for Trespass Magazine, and I’m also writing articles for Onya. I started a new blog called In The Thick Of It a week and a half ago, and it feels great to be back blogging. I’ve also got a few projects lined up with other publications – print and online – but none are set in stone as yet. And I’ve just started working on a coffee table book, which will be a merging of my writing and photography, and it’ll be incredibly motivational and pretty.

Are we allowed to have a sneak peak at your goals list?

Sure. My current goals involve completing and publishing my coffee table book, marking Onya’s place in the print world as a publication of brilliance and uniqueness, building my new blog, and writing, writing and more writing.

How does it feel to be able to take Onya Magazine to print?

I feel the best way to sum that up, because you can probably get a sense that I tend to waffle rather than be succinct, is to read this post that I wrote when I broke the news: http://www.onyamagazine.com/articles/extra-extra-read-all-about-it/

What advice would you offer to aspiring novelists, freelancers and wordsmiths who want to follow a similar career path?

Every writer has a style. Don’t be afraid to embrace yours. The best compliment I’ve ever received was someone who told me that when they read my work it was almost like I was sitting there next to them, talking. It was uncomplicated and fresh.

And there’s my next piece of advice – don’t overcomplicate things. I’m a strong believer in keeping things simple, but that’s just my style. I’ve always thought that there’s no real reason to be overly academic in your writing unless you’re writing an academic paper – because if you’re work is not accessible, then no one will access it.

Don’t be afraid to put out a strong opinion – you’ll always get strong opinions back, but that is only fuel for a stronger fire within.

To write well, you must read well.

If you start your own business, do it because it would be an injustice if you didn’t. Don’t do it to be cool or popular or to get discovered. I guarantee you that three months into your growing business, the work will swallow you, and if you don’t love what you’re doing and if you’re not prepared to put time and effort into it, then you will be a world away from cool and popular.

Don’t expect to be a brilliant editor, if you are not a brilliant writer. As far as I’m concerned the two are intrinsically linked.

Ten in the Hot Seat:

Describe yourself in one word: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Biggest accomplishment to date: I take nothing for granted. Every piece I’ve ever had published makes me smile. Every time I publish a writer’s work in Onya I smile. But, if I had to choose, probably building a business on my own, from the ground up, all on my own with no backing, and succeeding so far, has been a point of great satisfaction in my life.

You wish you wrote: Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr Suess

Can’t leave home without: My BlackBerry, notebook, pen, lip balm, keys and wallet. And sometimes my MacBook Pro and Canon EOS.

One thing you are currently writing: I never leave a piece unfinished. That’s why I haven’t dared to write a novel yet. But I’ll get there.

First thing you wrote: Without retrieving the journal, it would be hard to say, but one particular pearler that stands out is this line by six year old me, ‘If a kid ever beat me in a running race, I’d probably bash them up.’

Addicted to reading: Yes, entirely addicted to reading. It’s safe to say I devour words, so if it’s in a book, magazine or online, I’m generally reading it.

Top spot on your goals list: I have a couple, in equal place. Publishing Onya Magazine – the print version – in late 2010. It’s going to be one hell of an adventure. And getting my coffee table book completed, and published.

If you were a character in a classic, you’d be: I’d love to say Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s but I’m much more like Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird.

The best thing about being a wordsmith: Being read. Every time someone reads your work you are making them think or feel or remember. You might even teach them, or inform them, or better still inspire them.

Stuck for ideas this Christmas? Wanna know all about the new Ferrari? Then you need to get your mince pies around these two little numbers…

iMOTOR
iGIZMO

iMotor has undergone a small refresh, making it now officially the most pink car magazine on the virtual shelves. Includes a nice 360, shed loads of video and an interview with Jenson Button. Although a tad over crowded on most pages and their being the usual too much content being crowded into 30 pages, it works well and a nice title. Considering it is not a contract title and done on a monthly basis it’s a cracking magazine, one of the best online.

iGizmo has expanded substantially this issue, due to the rise in sweeeet Christmas gadgets, so it’s a bumper issue. Functionality seems have been smoothed out in most instances and there are some nice features in there. Again, arguably too much content for this platform but for a free monthly consumer title it’s a pretty damn good.

Check ‘em out for yourselves…

A new home design magazine was launched last month, brand new format too. Lonny is an online magazin

A new home design magazine was launched last month, brand new format too. Lonny is an online magazine with embedded advertising, which takes it’s name from London and New York. It’s stylish, high-end content; lovely to look at.

There’s a lot of speculation on the future of newspapers and magazines, in the new online/social media world. Newspapers have tried all sorts of subscription models, with moderate success in specialist markets and very little success in general markets.

A magazine ad from Lonny, showing the link on mouse-over

Lonny gives the visitor a traditional magazine experience, down to the sensation of turning pages, and a zoom-in feature. Both ads and content contain embedding links allowing you to click through and order the beautiful fabric or extraordinary vase. From that point of view it’s an advertiser’s dream.

The magazine’s owners have also started a facebook fan page, and a twitter account although with just two tweets it’s a fledgeling account at this point.

It is being hailed as a new model and a great example of what can be done online for a small amount of money – Vanity Fair states that the first issue had production costs of around $11,000 most of which was on photography and content. As the production uses standard technology provided by issuu technology costs should be kept very low. Surely these costs are less than the production and distribution costs of a “real” magazine, and given the revenue potential from advertisers this could be a good model.

There are a few things to be ironed out, the drive to keep the magazine in magazine format means they’ve forgone on a few things that are huge advantages online.

crosslinks; on seeing the contents page I wanted to just click on the title of the article and go to the page of the article, but all I got was a zoom in.

navigation; there’s no consistent navigation, and with close to 200 pages of content it’s not that easy to scroll through and back to the contents page. There is a “jump box” on the upper right to let you jump to a specified page, but I still find it a bit awkward to use.

text; the text is produced in the same size and density as in a print magazine, there is a zoom function, but this is the hardest format to read online.

updates; the current issue was launched on October the first, the next issue is due in December, which follows the magazine publishing expectation. But in that time Apartment Therapy will have had around 600 updates.

The facebook fan page has more than 8000 fans, and Twitter has more than 1o00 followers, but by not using these advantages of the web Lonny makes it harder to engage an audience longterm.

I’m sure they’ll learn a lot from the first issue – they’ll see viewing data on time spent on the site, and what people hung around and actually read. I suspect they’ll make some changes, I suspect they might at some point decide to deliver content more frequently. In this format they could deliver a 25 page magazine every week, with less text.

I’m also curious to see how long they stick with the “magazine experience aspect”, and whether that maps to reader’s needs. I often read magazines on public transport, and this doesn’t offer a mobile version, and given that the content is one big flash element I think it would be a lot of work to develop a mobile version.

On a more personal note; I also like to read magazines in the bath, but I don’t think I’ll be doing that with an online version.

So will I visit Lonny again? Sure, I’ll dip in occasionally, but it won’t replace print magazines for me, and it won’t replace the “home design fix” that I regularly get from Apartment Therapy.

Still there’s potential there for a content model that might work for advertisers, I’m curious enough to follow Lonny for that reason alone.

Last week saw an announcement that posh publishers Condé Nast and Adobe are teaming up to build an online eReader platform specifically for magazines, most notably a digital launch of Wired next year.

Wired UK already had a digital presence on the Ceros platform for at least the first few issues. Now however it doesn’t seem to be continuing or at least I can’t find it. Maybe this is in preparation for next years launch?

I find this whole idea very intriguing. Condé Nast have been quite slow on jumping aboard the digital magazine bandwagon. We had Wired UK and now have a digital GQ which has received a lot of praise despite it being very average. And eReaders? Does anyone really think by the middle of next year eReaders will be capable of displaying rich media interactive magazines? They can’t even do colour yet.

And what of Adobe’s investment? Are they finally fed up of waiting for Apple to release Flash on the iPhone? Do they know more than rumors of Apple’s impending Silverlight competitor, and have decided to beat them to the punch?

Conde Nast have declined to speculate on their cash investment, but could it be linked to Hurst Publishing’s $200 million investment in eInk? And the subsequent development of their own magazine reader…

There are a lot of questions, to which I have bugger all answers. Obviously Condé believe portable technology is nearly good enough to make their dreams a reality. I don’t. Unless of course their dreams are quite dull.

I think eReaders are still 2 years away from being viable portable magazine readers. I think Hurst are the ones to watch and I think a real change could be instigated by the rumored Apple Tablet and whether that supports Flash or their own, new alternative.

One thing I do agree with however and thoroughly support is Condé Nast Chief Executive Chuck Townsend’s comment “We can’t sit back and wait for somebody else to do this.” A step in the right direction can only ever be welcomed and any investment by publishing companies is absolutely necessary. I just wish someone could shed some light on this…

BT Upload isn’t the only eMag to win an award recently. Abanka, Slovenian annual banking report has won an award for best annual report. I can only imagine how boring that process must have been for the judges! But Abanka done a fine job of making 210 page document a little more friendly and unique and all built (including the site) using the eDition platform.

Abanka 2008 report

It’s also a nice example for customisation of the eDition interface, the menu bar and turn arrows, all remarkably easy to do.

So are eMags the perfect platform for jazzing up some of the worlds most boring content? The PPA have their annual report on Ceros, as do many other B2B companies. Sounds like this could be a viable way to help support online platforms whilst magazine publishers get their heads around the idea of unique interactive magazines for the public.

Hello everyone! What a beautiful Friday! Beautiful weather, beautiful design, and hello beautiful we

Hello everyone! What a beautiful Friday! Beautiful weather, beautiful design, and hello beautiful weekend. I have recently been researching about environmental design and wayfinding. Environmental design can be defined as: The field of developing physical, spatial environments (interiors and/or exteriors) to solve a particular need or create a specific experience. The field of Environmental Design could include Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Design, Interior Design, Exhibit Design and, sometimes, Event Design. Wayfinding means knowing where you are, knowing your destination, following the best route, recognizing your destination, and finding your way back. The two relate to each other like brother and sister. The more I research about the subjects, the more I want to presue the fields. I love working outdoors, in 3D formats, help people find their way, I have a good sense of direction, and I love to travel. This just might be the specialty I was looking for. Don’t get me wrong, I would still like to work for a graphic design firm that does all of the usual design (print, package design, branding, advertising, etc), and I want to work for a graphic design firm after I graduate. But if I can work for a design firm that also includes wayfinding, I would be set! I found a couple of websites to get you started on your search incase this sounded like you. These are two of my favorite sites so far, but I am constantly looking for new ones. Please post if you have environmental design or wayfinding websites that you follow!

Not entirely sure how this one passed me by… IPC Media have dipped their rather large toes into the world of eMags with this little number: Volks World USA

Published on the Yudu platform it seems they are six issues in. It’s interesting to see them go for Yudu as opposed to eDition or Ceros, the two main contenders. I’d love to know the reason for that particular decision.

Anyway, the magazine…

First impressions are, not too bad at all. Very, very complicated and way too much content for this medium. Also looks like it borrows quite heavily from other eMags currently online, especially iMotor.

I think the Yudu platform is very clunky, badly designed and not the most user friendly. The magazine it’s self also leans heavily towards print instead of embracing the simplicity of online magazines. There is simply waaaay too much text, at too small a point size. And the Yudu zooming function drives me nuts, so I found myself getting frustrated quit quickly.

The video content leaves a lot to be desired. I’m not sure if this is done partially as an independent title, but it doesn’t appear to have the usual IPC Media money behind it… shame, with better videos they could have a nice little product.

Generally, it’s not bad at all and most importantly any VW fan will love it. I think with a little more focus it could become great. Hopefully they’ll find their balance. Decide for yourself…

If you nip over to the eDition website you can get a run down of some of the new features in their 4.6 update. Having seen a sneak peek of it just recently I can say with 100% confidence, it kicks ass!

As you’d expect, the online publishing platform and behind-the-scenes services offered are as good as ever. What makes them special is the eDition software that enables you to produce a digital magazine very quickly and efficiently, even without knowledge of Adobe Flash. They are trying harder and harder to put more power in the hands of designers rather than coders. Or at the least, they give you that option.

eDition 4.6 is an indispensable tool for both large companies and small, independent publishers alike.

But don’t take my word for it (like you would anyway!) head over to their site for more info and a free demo: eDition 4.6

Anyone a West Ham fan? No? That’s what I thought, hasn’t stopped them from launching a nice little eMag called Claret and Blue, issue 1 is live online now!

Published on the very reliable and cool-as-hell eDition platform Claret and Blue is a nice simple magazine. It’s not the most sophisticated of eMags and the design gets a little “loose”, but it works, has good content, good interactivity and it’s entertaining. What more could one desire?

The competition accompanying the launch of Tenerife’s first online magazine, Tenerife Magazine, is

The competition accompanying the launch of Tenerife’s first online magazine, Tenerife Magazine, is so good that a friend’s 20 year old nephew didn’t tell any of his friends, or even his family, about it in the hope that the fewer people who enter it, the better his chances of winning.

Anyone who becomes a fan of Tenerife Magazine on Facebook between now and the end of November automatically is entered into a draw to win a week’s accommodation for up to 4 people at the sun drenched Sands Beach Resort in Lanzarote.

Have a look at the picture and tell me that you don’t fancy the idea of reclining on those golden sands beside that crystal mini lagoon. Every time I imagine myself stretching out on the third sun lounger from the left I have to remind myself that as I’m involved with TM, I can’t enter the competition… damn.

We’ve been really excited by the launch of Tenerife Magazine for a number of reasons. One, we’re working alongside other people we’ve admired for a long time like author and travel writer Joe Cawley, freelance writer Colin Kirby, SEO expert and blogger Julie Hume and the man that anyone on Tenerife with a business should be breaking down his door to get advice from, John Beckley, director of Sorted Sites.

The other thing that excites us about Tenerife Magazine is that it’s Tenerife’s first English language online magazine and it’s completely independent. This means that opinions will be honest and no punches will be pulled when it comes to views, reviews or anything else for that matter. And all the articles will be 100% original with a strong experiential element; not something that can be taken for granted these days.

It’s also ecologically friendly. No squirrels’ houses were demolished, or trees hacked down to make paper for Tenerife Magazine, so that’s a nice little bonus.

Anyway, back to the competition. This is so ridiculously easy to enter that only someone with a mission to deny themselves pleasure in life wouldn’t bother.

Simply become a fan on Facebook and you could be on your way. Click here to find out more, check out the mag and enter the competition.

As a kid I never really knew the difference between Rupert Murdoch and Howling Mad Murdoch from the A-Team.

I’m still having trouble…

This is a pretty long video at 37 minutes but well worth a view, the old boy covers everything from paid internet content, his evolvement with British papers, the BBC and his retirement.

What amazes me and also re-assures me is that the guy seems to have little idea as to what year we live in. His age is showing a lack of understanding about the internet and it’s users.

Not too say he didn’t have some good points but generally I think he’s a bit lost. A good business man no doubt. A pioneer, no longer. Decide for yourself.

I found a new knitting e-zine! Knotions.com is a wonderful knitting online magazine; it’s a diamond in the rough, only without the rough.

There are quite a few patterns on it and there was a good selection. It helped that the current issue has a ‘mini sock issue’ in it, so there is plenty of eye candy for a sock yarn enthusiast. I mean, look at these sweet things:

That’s not all! There is also great lace patterns and some wonderful cable patterns. I personally think that this pullover would look great on just about anyone:

I absolutely love the cable pattern on the top. Don’t ask me why, but it is one of my favorite cable patterns, I just find it so elegant.

Besides the lovely patterns (17 that I can count) there are also 2 book reviews, a review on Signature Needles – something I found quite interesting, and 3 different tutorials.

The only downside of this site is that the navigation is a little confusing, it was hard to tell what was the current issue and what was archive.

My rating: I am such a sucker for independent online magazines, and Knotions is a perfect example why.

When it comes to setting your Thanksgiving table, options for the adventurous host are limitless. What are the hottest trends for you to bring to your table this year? Here are a few ideas that will take your Thanksgiving table from ordinary to extraordinary:
Color, Texture and Mix – Match:

In table linens and accessories, this year we are seeing rich, saturated colours. We are also seeing a lot of texture and the mixing and matching of patterns with solids. There are a lot of options out there to do something warm and inviting.

Color Trends

Warm tones have always been popular for Fall and that continues with some of the biggest trends in colour combinations this year. Some of those include:
- Deep Spice and Aubergine with muted Gold accents – Dark Chocolate with Blues and Gray accents – Olive Green, Aubergine and softer greens as accents – Dark Chocolate, Taupe and Natural

Tabletop Decor

- Use things that you already have in your home – pull out your 3 or 4 of your favourite vases of different heights. Use complementary colors of fresh flowers for a simple and stunning arrangement. Fill three or four vases and/or glass bowls with different colors and sizes of ornaments, fruits, leaves – anything with color and texture that will create visual excitement.

- Your guests are all unique – why not celebrate their individuality? Use different patterns and/or colors of napkin rings that match their unique personalities. Are they simple or sophisticated? Fun or formal? Unpredictable or conservative? Show them you care with a little customization to complement your table linens.

- Candles are always a dramatic and cost effective way to make a statement – use votives at each place setting with a name card and emphasize beautiful table linens for a classy and simple look. Or go more dramatic and cluster your favourite candle sticks of varying heights and looks as a centerpiece. Use colors that complement or match your dishes, glasses and table linens.

- Nothing brings subtle sophistication to your table like a well-selected runner. Use one the length of the table plus 12 inches to hang over the edge (usually a 90″ or longer) as the perfect centerpiece. If you are using a solid tablecloth or placemats, make sure to jazz it up with a festive pattern. If you have a patterned look already, use a vibrant solid runner that picks up on one of the colors in your runner.

- Use 2 napkins instead of one with a napkin ring. With a solid napkin inside, and a more decorative napkin on the outside.

When setting your table, just remember: do what feels right for the mood. A casual gathering calls for a relaxed setting. A formal meal should feel that way at the table. Either way, it doesn’t take much to elevate your in-home dining experience. Replacing an old tablecloth with something fresh an exciting, and adding a few simple table accessories can go a long way to impressing your guests. It’s that time of year when family gatherings abound and everyone spends countless hours congregating around the dinner table. With the hours spent preparing the perfect meal, make sure you don’t forget to finish it off with the perfect setting..

EscapeArtist Travel Magazine
Not for the faint hearted, EscapeArtist.com seeks the daring, the challenging, those who live, travel and express on the edge…possibly the cusp of insanity. But the publication is not out to offend, simply to present intelligent writing about culture with history, purpose and flares of risqué.

Ladies and Gents, I’m back, but most likely for only a limited time. You see, right now I

Ladies and Gents,

I’m back, but most likely for only a limited time. You see, right now I’m supposed to be studying for my Organizational Management test. What am I doing though? I’m wide awake drinking coffee while maticulously going over Hubba-U’s analytics for this week. Needless to say, I’m obsessed. I just can’t quit.

Online marketing and web tactics consume my mind for the majority of each day. How can I drive more traffic? How can I increase my average time on site? Why is my bounce rate so low? It’s all I ever think about.

Today, Hubba-U received 539 visits, the 2nd highest it’s ever received, while averaged 4 minutes and 11 seconds time on site, a drastically low measure. What caused this?

1) We had some heavy hitting articles relevant to the hot topics on campus that drove a lot of traffic.

2) We didn’t have much of a supporting cast to those articles, hence the lower time.

How do we fix that?

1) We blast the bigtime articles via social media.

2) We get to work writing new articles in order to keep them coming back.

Nothing too complicated. In fact, it’s just logic. But that’s the thing about the web. It’s the little things. The color of a button, the positioning of a link. The time of day you post things. Each of the previous can have a major effect on your success.

But that’s only the beginning. That’s the micro-view. Looking at the macro, you have to look at the entire network. Hubba has to be a conglomerate. Hubba-U will be the mothership — big, bad, and easy to market. From there, we’ll need to provide further value with sites like frogmylife.com (already up, running, and getting over 3000 visits a week), circleyesorno.com (coming soon), hubba-deals.com, and hubba-announce.com. This expansion will not only enable us further satisfy our existing consumers, but it will expand our reach as each site caters to a different segment. And once that segment is engaged, they’ll have no choice but to engage with the rest of the network. And by they’ll have no choice, I mean that we’re going to affiliate the sites to drive traffic to one another in order to maximize the potential of the network and build value.

All the while, we’ll be having an amazing time making memories, friends, and gaining more experience than many will in years to come. Why?

Because we showed up. It began with an idea of mine that others grasped onto. Now, we’re grasping onto the ideas of one another, collaborating for greater innovation and greater ability. We’ve empowered one another to go out and make things happen.

In conclusion, I love the online realm. I love entrepreneurship. I love turning dreams into reality. Welcome to The Hubba Network.

What?
There is a new fantastic magazine online called Going Gaited.

Who?
The talented editors Tracey Buckalew and Teri Overbey have conspired to create a fabulous resource for gaited horse enthusiasts.

Why?
One visit and you’ll know why. This magazine has something for everyone, even if you’re not familiar with the glide ride of a gaited horse. I can’t wait for you to see the stunning photography and great articles ranging from veterinary advice, behavior and gait training and so much more.

And, yours truly has joined their panel of experts to be on hand to assist with training questions. My new monthly column shares the same name as this blog. You can find my stuff under Clicker and Attraction-Based Training.

This month I was honored to be the featured guest writer in the All About YOU section. This section provides an opportunity to gush unabashedly about your hooved babies.

When?
A new issue appears every month.

Yay!
This is definitely a magazine that will make you feel good. This month the featured breed is the Paso Fino, a breed near and dear to my heart. Both Romeo and Juliet, my first painters, are Paso Finos. If you want to see some amazing examples of the breed, the November issue of Going Gaited will leave you smiling.

Enjoy!
