We may not be the first online radio in the Philippines, but we are first in musical diversity.

We are part Contemporary Hits Radio(CHR) and part rock radio. Nothing uncommon about that; many stations have that format. Our play list is what makes us different.

The popular hits in our CHR shows are compiled along with songs unheard, yet, by many. Not only we play what’s the latest in the charts, we, also, search the net for fresh materials we think could be the next big hits. We want to be the hit makers ourselves.

Our rock selections are as deep and wide as rock n’ roll history itself. Divided into five shows, each are given three hours on week nights, letting the richness and depth of the play lists satisfy the rock fanatics. Global Rock is our catchword, playing great songs from many languages and cultures.

Completing our spectrum is our link to the world’s musical pulse — World Beat, our world music show.

Monsterous Radio, this little mutant, is probably the only station on Earth that is CHR, yet, also, plays Robert Johnson, Django Reinhardt, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Lee Scratch Perry, King Crimson, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, indigenous Filipino music, Chinese metal, Rock en Español to name a few. When describing Viva Radio as the official in-store and online music network for retail giant American Apparel, it’s not difficult to conjure up an image of what the station might entail. By examining the company’s advertisements, store design, personal employee style, and clothing it sells, American Apparel has a very specific aesthetic – and as an extension of the brand, Viva Radio is no exception.

Streaming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Brooklyn-based station was founded in 2006, and has over 60,000 unique listeners a month. The music is programmed by the DJs themselves (which include former Rolling Stone writers, musician, art, and fashion personalities, and unknown bedroom DJs), who play music ranging from electronic, techno, and disco, to indie and classic rock, to jazz, blues, and country.

Extending beyond radio, in 2008 the station oversaw the partnership between American Apparel and Parisian label Record Makers, and more recently, the has sponsored live screenings of “lost gems of American cinema” such as River’s Edge and Cisco Pike at New York City’s Walter Reade Theater, among other live music events New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin.

While the station serves as the in-store music in each of American Apparel’s retail stores, it’s interesting to witness how strong Viva Radio holds up on its own. For those at home streaming online, the breadth of the station’s musical selection and the passion and knowledge of the DJs illustrate a sense that the station strives to offer a creative and alternative listening experience. Offline, the station’s live event sponsorships correspond with the company’s demographic and brand image.

Rumored to be facing bankruptcy, American Apparel as a clothing retailer may have its own set of problems – but by looking at Viva Radio, it seems they can offer a few lessons in terms of strategically building an online radio brand.

Disclaimer: Don’t take this seriously, because most Cebuano bands are not serious anyway.

1. SHEILA AND THE INSECTS – One time MTV Rising Stars nga wala ka-rise. Responsable sa pagkamabaw sa New Wave sa Cebu. Ni-open sa The Dawn sauna, imbis palawman unta nila gitukaran man hinoon ug Don’t You Forget About Me.

Si-aw pud ni si Mikmik kay niadtong gastambay ko sa Backyard nga hubog katukar-tukar ug Creep sa STP. Gi-ingnan lang kog,”Ganahan ka anang kantaha? Kalood nimo oi!” Kaging gyud ko kay impresyon nako gahi gyud siyag tirada. Nikanta pa ra ba kog Will I Survive sa Introvoys sauna sa Outpost. Way jazz sensibility ang drummer. Gabagtok lang hinapakan. Ang bajista na-wagtang sa 12 bar. Nanaghan pa gyud ang tingog sa cuerdas. Gi-chords! Progressive sab. Dili na man diay forty ang pag-basa sa ila ngan. Cuarenta na. Aw, Bisrock na diay sila.
