Online Advertising Growth – Targeting a Factor

Marketers say the most important benefit of online advertising, compared to offline advertising, is online’s more accurate targeting capabilities, according to a study conducted by Forrester Consulting.

The study notes that targeted media are the most highly valued, with traditional paid search (78% rating important), audience buying (73%), retargeting (68%), and contextual display ads (65%) at the top of the list. At the other end of the spectrum, just 30% ranked pay-per-click ads on social networks like Facebook as important to their goals.

Today we will give you a tip for all of the businesses that buy Radio ads or in other words “t

Today we will give you a tip for all of the businesses that buy Radio ads or in other words “terrestrial” ads. Just FYI we are all about results and measuring results when it comes to advertising, marketing or branding. With that said there are many radio stations that do not subscribe to Arbitron. Arbitron is the “measuring tool (company)” that radio stations use to track how many listeners listen at any given time. Radio stations pay a huge price to use Arbitron’s service…roughly 75,000/year. There are many radio stations that do not subscribe to this service and therefore can not track results. So first tip…make sure that when buying “traditional/terrestrial” radio ads your results can be measured. Now knowing that you are going to choose a station that subscribes to Arbitron, you must also realize that it will cost you more to advertise with said radio station.

Here are some tips and alternatives to avoid paying big bucks at the most popular station in your area:

1) Ask the station if they offer mobile advertising. Mobile advertising is affordable and usually can be set up on a monthly basis. Here’s how it works… Radio stations usually have their “clubs”…example, DJ says, “Text OH HELLO to 68683 and win a pair of tickets to see RUN DMC.” So the listeners text in to win and then the radio station’s mobile platform sends them a “bounce back” message like this: “Thanks for listening to 95.1 FM for all your business needs visit http://www.your business name here. com.” So now not only does your business have the main phrase, “OH HELLO,” for the text in to win campaign but when the listeners get the bounce back message your website is featured and now listeners can hit your website on their smart phones.

Most all big and small stations, regardless or subscribing to Arbitron, have a mobile platform that is very affordable where your results can me measured. It is a good alternative to your traditional ad and also a great way to just get your name in the minds of radio listeners.

2) Another good alternative to your traditional radio ad is a thing called a “gateway video.” Most all radio stations whether big or small have an internet stream that you can listen to online. Before even being able to listen online a video of about 20 seconds is played. This is the “gateway video.” This is a great way to get your company seen by many people already at a computer ready to explore what they see. Say the station that you choose has an average of 30,000 listeners per month online, that would mean that 30,000 listeners would have to see your “gateway video ad” before listening to their favorite station. You can usually get it linked to your website. So this is another great way to advertise with a radio station without having to buy radio ads and it is measurable.

3) Last tip we will handover today is fairly simple…online streaming ads are usually cheaper than traditional terrestrial ads. No matter if the radio station subscribes to Arbitron or not your advertising can be measured with online streaming ads. If you choose to go online with the radio station make sure the give you a “sync banner” to go along with your ads. A “sync banner” is a banner ad that pops up when your ad is ran online and is linked to your website.

Enjoy these tips of non-traditional radio advertising…and have a great Monday…Mondays are good.

Oh hello!

It was nice to see the Radio Advertising Bureau’s 2009 Year End news release and how it pointed out

It was nice to see the Radio Advertising Bureau’s 2009 Year End news release and how it pointed out the momentum in revenues from online radio. The RAB release showed that the digital sector brought in $480M in revenues in 2009, a 13% increase from 2008. These results compare to radio’s overall revenue, which dropped 18%, from $19.55B in 2008 to $16B in 2009. Many large terrestrial stations reported revenue drops of 20% to 25% for 2009.

Creating some excitement as move in 2010, the RAB report pointed out that 2009 Q4 revenue saw a 15% increase over 2008’s Q4 number. The RAB reported that “Marketers increasingly recognize Radio’s loyal audiences who tune in via multiple audio devices such iPods, HD, mobile apps, etc.”, and that “…the digital sector has maintained its upward trajectory throughout 2009”.

Yes, it’s nice to be in the online sector.

In a related report, the Radio and Internet Newsletter’s 2/22/09 edition cited BIA/Kelsey’s U.S. Local Media Annual Forecast for 2009 that online ad revenue will grow from $15.2B in 2009 to $36.7B in 2014, and that there will be “a steady shift toward digital media.”
