As usual, Apple hasn’t said anything about the savings we are likely to receive, but judging from previous years, it’ll probably be somewhere between 5-10% on most products. It would be nice if those numbers were bumped up a little bit, but I don’t think that’s very likely. Apple doesn’t need to have an all-out Black Friday sale to entice people to buy from them, they’re making enough money as it is.

Because I live in New Zealand, November the 27th comes to us before anyone else in the world. That means we’re also the first country to be offered Apple’s Black Friday deals. I think the store will be updated at midnight with the new prices, so I think I’ll stay up and be one of the first people to see the new prices.

After reading that, you probably think I’m mad. I mean, it’s not the unveiling of the rumored Apple tablet or anything like that, is it? Still, I might be buying something from the store tomorrow and I don’t think I could wait until the morning

Questions abound about $428,000 giveaway to Marshall Drummond.

Board members won’t say why they paid the Los Angeles Community College chancellor $428,000 to leave office.

In July, the seven-member board of the Los Angeles Community College District paid then-Chancellor Marshall Drummond nearly a half-million-dollars to quietly leave office.

Neither Drummond nor the board cited any reasons, saying they were bound by confidentiality rules and a clause in the severance pact that forbid either side from discussing the matter.

Drummond himself appears to have moved on with his life. He took a $1,200-day consulting job at the Peralta Community Colleges, and issued a report that ironically chided the Northern California system for lack of transparency in addressing questions about board members’ lavish travel budget and the chancellor’s salary details. Drummond recently accepted a post in the United Arab Emirates, where he is chief operating officer and provost at the Higher Colleges of Technology. In an e-mail exchange, he refused to discuss details of his leaving.

Personalisation and customisation is steadily becoming a favoured business model of many online businesses. In my opinion, personalisation is an effective web tool helping you and the organisation in many different areas. Personalisation saves the user time, in terms of entering repetitive details. When I log into my account page, I am able to see dynamic recommendations. These recommendations can enable the user to be introduced to new products/services where they might not have known/noticed before.

Organisations, such as Amazon, can filter out irrelevant information based on recently viewed products to deliver relevant, interesting products/services to the user.

However, many users don’t like the idea of using their personal information (viewing history) to determine an option. Many feel that sharing personal information is a great risk that can lead to irrelevance or infringements. Certain websites monitor the user’s activity and accumulate adverts based on keywords or user activity. A major example of this type of act taking place is on the popular social networking website ‘Facebook’.

When you log into Facebook, you’re immediately greeted by adverts placed directly at the side of the window. From personal experience, many of the adverts generated are irrelevant and clutter your ‘personal’ space.

Certain aspects of your interactivity is recorded and used to generate adverts. Facebook can pick up on an individual keyword through your Facebook search history or on your personal space and then immediately start displaying adverts, which may not even be relevant.

I feel that this is a poor example of personalisation as it can be classed as a nuisance, due to the positioning of the adverts and also due to relevance. Personally, I feel that personalisation is a great way to interpret data and to present a meaningful array of options to the user. Personalisation in order to be effective needs to be done appropriately without being ambiguous, users need to be told what information is being recorded, in what manner and are they given the option to not take part. Personalisation is a useful in terms of introducing new products/services to the user and to make users aware of certain events/products/services through the use of advertising. Websites can gather customer interactivity and then display adverts based on the topic area. By giving relevant details to customers, they will in turn be more inclined to return to the website due to it’s reliability.

It’s a good thing! After all, you don’t want a bunch of users who just come to your site only to leave again.

At first glance, this is correct. You do not want people to hit the front page of your site and just hit back. This is not the same thing as a low bounce rate.

A lot of marketing professionals monitor their site via the dash-board, it’s like in-depth analysis on cruise control! They skim the basic site-wide stats and choose their actions from their. The bounce rate is one of these basic stats.

There are a number of issues with this approach. A higher bounce rate can be symptomatic of activity on the site that is actually good for it.

• Some organic traffic sources will bounce more than others
• Some pages can still be effective even if users view just them
• Some traffic sources with a high number of first time visitors will bounce a lot more than average

A low bounce rate might not be a good thing either, it may indicate other issues.

• Decline in long tail search traffic
• Decline in number or visibility in incidental linking

So, if you are inclined to glance at the site wide bounce rate, and then decide to act based on how low or high you feel it is. Please ensure that you look closer and actually see what is happening on your site that actually produces value. If the bounce rate is somehow linked to a mode of user behaviour that is impacting on the bottom line, act, if not, do something more productive.

So far, I have only decided one module, Online Jounalism. I’m thinking about replacing my other choice of Politicial Communication with Sociology of News.

As for the final project, I prefer working on an online magazine or writting a dissertation, because both allow me to control my own schedule.

Radio final project and TV final project might be interesting as well, but I’ll have to follow others’ steps, e.g. the interviewees or the person I’ll be filming.
