It seems like every ethnic group, sub-group, and subset needs to have its WWII movie, and the only problem there is that some groups get lost in the mix. The WWII movies for Japanese Americans are based on the 442 Regimental Combat Team, and their story is too phenomenal to be missed. Made almost entirely of Japanese American soldiers, the 442nd is the most-highly decorated unit of the US military EVER. While their families back in the States were imprisoned in internment camps, these Nisei were spearheading the campaign through Italy. And in case it didn’t occur to you, you don’t get highly-decorate shit without losing a lot of lives.

A few of the survivng soldiers starred in the 1951 film about the 442nd, Go For Broke! ; (a film whose main character was a white officer). For you kids who get a headache from black and white movies, Only the Brave enters a wider DVD release this week. (It’s been available through the film’s website for about 2 years now.) Depicting the famous rescue of the Lost Battalion, Only the Brave stars Jason Scott Lee and Mark Dacascos – and Pat Morita, who played a veteran of the 442nd in The Karate Kid.

Such are the benefits of putting on wildly successful shows such as the recent A Day To Remember/Parkway Drive concert: They afford the financial means to bring in smaller-drawing acts for the benefit of the music community. Case in point: The Omaha, Nebraska-based rock group Cursive is coming to The Outland Ballroom for a show November 25 with Capgun Coup and more, one of two new concerts announced by Forever Endeavor Productions this morning. The other show is Outbreak, Soul Control and Only the Brave at Club Neon (1611 N. Campbell Ave.) on November 14. 

Outbreak is about to release its self-titled album November 10 and has a song on the upcoming Saw VI soundtrack, so the band should come to Springfield riding quite the high. It’s the Cursive show that carries the advance-purchase ticket option (psssst, click here to get in on that), and if you were at the band’s last Springfield show you know why. Of course, since then Cursive has release its own new album, Mama I’m Swollen, and even popped its network-TV cherry to boot with a performance on The Late Show With David Letterman last March. Let the anticipation begin.

رحت ببنطلون نص كم وبرموده وقعدت في وجه الهواء، تجمدت ولكن حبيت هالأحساس! ياخي شي رهيب لما تكون في شهر أغسطس وتحس ببرد! المهم رجعت للشقه المستأجره بعد انتهاء السهره الجميله، وغسلت شعري من الجل ( من آثار التكشخ P: ) وجيت ابي انشّف شعري ولكن سمعت صوت اختي تناديني وتقول لي تعال شوف القمر شكله رهيب! تركت الفوطه قبل ما أنشف شعري وركضت للبلكونه (( مادري ليش ركضت الصراحه، مو كأنه القمر بيطير او يختفي مثلاً –_-“ ) وطلعت في عز البرد في أعلى شقه بالعماره وقعدت أطالع منظر القمر واللي كان جميل فعلاً، وبعدها رحت نمت، ومن التعب الشديد نمت في أقل من خمس دقائق!

قمت في اليوم الثاني وأنا اشعر بآثار مابعد الثماله،… أقصد آثار المرض، مو انفلونزا الخنازير لايروح تفكيركم بعد P: ، ولا نزله برد أو نشله، ولكن شي ثاني، الا وهو التهاب العصب السابع، أو مايعرف عندنا بـ”أبو وجه!”

Tonight is the night the Springfield Music Scene brings together a wide variety of genres under one roof (Remmington’s Downtown) for the sake of, well, just showing it can be done. Roots Of Mankind, Queen City Saints,  Jam Room, The Spacetones, Falcon Punch, We Voyagers and Only the Brave will all grace the stage tonight, with an added plus: The show also marks the release party for Roots Of Mankind’s new album, Pangaea. While we can’t definitively say a show such as this has never happened before, we can say having this many music styles (as many as six, by our count) under one roof for one show has never happened in our memory. Watch for a gi-normous crowd–hopefully staying through the whole show–and a positive, even festive mood throughout the room.

Ah, but if you’re like us, you like to travel around a bit. Well, have we got a lineup for you:

* Holstein and Truett & The Traitors at Lindberg’s. Tonight marks the CD release party for Holstein’s newest album, Blood On James River, a mean mini-riot of a rock album. Good God, we just used alliteration… moving on. If you haven’t heard the album yet, you’re in luck; the band will be playing the whole thing from start to finish to kick off its headlining set. Also, watch for two clothing themes in the crowd: superhero costumes (encouraged) and red-and-black combinations (accepted if you, say, lost your cape in the woodchipper).

* Scarswillfade, The Final Piece, Assembly Line Gods and Knife*Death at Nathan P. Murphy’s. This show marks Scarswillfade’s reunion, which is exciting news in the local metal scene.

* Glass Bottom Boat Ride, Goodtime Engineers, The Secret and This Night Is Forever at The Outland Ballroom. Tonight is the second try for GBBR’s concert-film DVD taping after data corruption cost them the sound from the first one. They couldn’t have picked a better lineup to regroup with; every band playing tonight is top-notch.

* Underground Blues Division and Matthew Darkly at The Outland

* Ryan Shiel and Slippy LaRue at Patton Alley Pub

* Full Moon Blues at Archie’s Lounge

* The Lowdown Fancy at Galloway Station

* Rick Shortt & Hotbox at Three 20’s

* The Silver Hammer Band at Springfield Brewing Company

Just when I was about to give up all hope of anyone ever releasing an interesting new men’s fragrance again, along comes Only The Brave from Italian fashion house Diesel. Appearing in the shops a few weeks ago it displays a level of wit almost unheard of in fragrance circles thesedays. In fact, you’ve almost got to go back as far as 1995, when Gaultier’s cheeky Le Male torso bottle launched, to see a flacon displaying such a sense of humour.
The fragrance itself is pretty good too – fresh and uplifting with a woody, amber dry down that might not be entirely original but which is brilliantly wearable and masculine all the same. So, thumbs up from me, if you’ll excuse the pun.

Well, whether you prefer your food that makes you spell things in breakfast or dinner form, there’s no disputing the number of consonants being tossed around in tonight’s shows. KG (of Acumen) and DJ P (of DJ P) are back in action tonight–one for tonight only, the other every Thursday–and we’re feeling a bit nostalgic as a result. And what’s more nostalgic than food you look forward to playing with more than eating?

Toute la journée d’hier, les yeux rivés sur la météo et Facebook, le téléphone qui ne cessait de sonner pour toujours la même question ‘Euh la Block Party c’est bien en extérieur…. Si il pleut… le concert est annulé?!’.

Le stress montait petit à petit. Du monde… pas de monde?!

Vers 16h00… le ciel s’aère. Le vent fait son travail. Le soleil pointe son nez.

Arrivée vers 17h sur place pour une interview. Je vois que la place est vide, mais que certains badeaux attendent déjà.

18h. Les répéts se finalisent… un peu de retard. Mais la place Stalingrad commence à se remplir doucement.

19h : Gyver accompagné de Dj Taishi commence à chauffer le public de la ONLY THE BRAVE BLOCK by Diesel.

Gyver tel les meilleurs MC de la Zulu Nation délivre des messages ultra positifs pour lancer cette soirée.

19h15 : Selah Sue est la première a monté sur scène. Elle envoûte le public avec sa voix et ses vibes Nu Soul.

Deux morceaux pour donner le ton de cette Only the Brave Block Party.

Et voilà… c’est en effet, bien partie! Sly Johnson aka the Mic Buddah commence à enchaîner quelques notes de Beat box accompagné par son fidèle DJ. Dj Taishi.Et tout s’enchaîne… Le monde est de plus en plus présent sur cette place. Hocus Pocus, David Walters, Anthony Joseph…

Vers 21H… l’égérie du parfum Diesel, Only The Brave… celui que tout le monde attend. COMMON monte sur scène.

Il se donne à fond pour cette Block Party parisienne.

21H30 : les deux heures trente de show sont déjà écoulés, tout le monde part avec un regain d’énergie positive !

Cette Only the Brave Block Party a fait démentir le flux Twitter de Carl Canada de l’après-midi : ‘Pendant ce temps là à Paris, Diesel a choisi la Place de Stalingrad, un des spots les plus coupe-gorges de Paris, pour sa Block Party. Ca promet”.

Des milliers de personnes se sont réunis pour ce moment unique. Pour suivre un concert de rue old school, avec une énergie positive que le Hip-Hop possède dans ses gènes. Et oui… le Hip-Hop Place de Stalingrad by Diesel : back to ROOTS. C’est ainsi que cela se passait hier, Monsieur Carl de Canada!  Pas de coupe-gorge. Pas de baston. Pas de gangsta rap qui pousse à la haine. Non… Bien au contraire. A voir les photo qui circulent sur la toile, même les enfants du quartier avec leur parents étaient là pour vivre une vraie Block Party.

Cette Block Party s’est terminée en petit comité au Jamel Comedy Club. Plein d’artistes nous ont honoré de leur présence. Disiz la Peste a fait son show et Dj Taïshi a ambiancé la petite salle parisienne.

Le lieu que nous voulions secret a été révélé.

Nous avons choisi un lieu qui soit à la fois extrêmement parisien et en même temps qui soit dans une atmosphère américaine; pour faire de cette “Only the Brave Block Party by Diesel” l’un des événements majeurs de la culture urbaine en 2009!

La place de la Bataille de Stalingrad (Paris XVIème) a été rapidement l’un des endroits que nous avons pressentis à cause de son métro aérien qui donne une sensation de Paris et d’ailleurs… Cela n’est peut-être pas par hasard que Shepard Fairey alias Obey Giant a choisi ce lieu pour poser l’un de ses ’stickers’.

Hellohikimori have launched an online art installation as part of their campaign work for Diesel’s new fragrance Only The Brave. Each month 4 artists will be showcased showing their interpretation of the concept “Only The Brave”. Artists Tofa, Nico Stumpo, Renascent and HKI kick off the proceedings, followed over the next months with work by artists from all over the world, including Peter Jaworowski, Serial Cut, Tom Muller, LaundryMat , Michael Paul Young, Mr.doob, Jemma Hosteler,Suprb, eBoy, MWM ,Lapp Pro, NandoCosta, Combustion, Si Scott, Alex Trochut, Eric Carl.

 A primeira vez que ouvi falar desse novo perfume da Diesel foi na Nylon Guys desse mês.

A campanha do perfume trabalha o publico alvo como um herói dos tempos modernos, “ele é para alguém que decidiu não sofrer, mas sim agir” disse Renzo Rosso ,  fundador da Marca,  para a revista.

When the guys from Roots of Mankind got in touch with us about putting together a barrier-breaking show for the local music scene, it reminded us of the “Springfield Bands Holding Hands” meetings  of a few years ago. Now comes word of the important difference: This show is a reality. All of the details are nailed down, including the list of performers, and we have it all after the break.

The cross-genre event will take place at Remmington’s Downtown June 27th as we noted in a previous post, but we now have the full and final list of bands:

Roots of Mankind
Falcon Punch
The Queen City Saints

That’s seven bands with completely different sounds and styles, all of them playing under one roof for an $8 cover charge. The doors will open at 7 p.m., with music starting at 8. Here’s hoping a show of such noble intent meets with worthy results.

a friend showed me a site the other day called IS BRAVE and oh man, the video on the site is really dope. the video is a triptych video created by LEGs, the team behind the Diesel XXX video (http://www.welcometolegs.com/), and if anyone has seen that diesel xxx video, you know how remarkable this video is going to be once you see it.

A couple of years ago a group of local musicians held regular meetings which led to the creation of Springfield Bands Holding Hands. The idea was simple: promote musical appreciation among different local genres by putting together a series of concerts with bands that might not otherwise play together. If you showed up for the whole show, you could be exposed to music you might otherwise never see while you waited to see the band you came for.

The group didn’t gain traction, but its legacy lives on in a show idea from the guys in Roots Of Mankind. We’ll tell you more about it after the break.

On June 27 ROM leads a group of bands from a wide variety of genres, all performing at Remmingtons Downtown. Among the other acts scheduled are Jam Room (reggae), The Spacetones (hip hop), Only the Brave (hardcore) and We Voyagers (indie rock). More acts are anticipated to be announced in the near future, as is the cover charge.

Und wieder ein Designhaus, das zur Übernahme gereicht wird: Viktor & Rolf gehört jetzt zu Only The Brave (OTB). Unbekannt? Das ist die Modeholding von Diesel-Gründer Renzo Rosso. Man wolle “die Entwicklung des niederländischen Modehauses vorantreiben und es zu einer festen Bezugsgröße in der internationalen Modewelt der Zukunft machen”, ließen beide Firmen heute vermelden. Das heißt mehr PR + Marketing und damit hoffentlich auch mehr Läden und Umsatz.

Mit Viktor & Rolf verleibt OTB sich eine weitere Designermarke ein: Martin Margiela und Sophia Kokosalaki gehören bereits zum Portfolio. Und wenigstens muss man sagen, dass es den beiden bisher nicht geschadet hat und besonders Margiela nach wie vor völlige künstlerische Freiheit genießt.
