Some how it took me the longest time to absorb this record. I listened to it many times just ignoring it and playing it in the background. Its not that their aren’t any good qualities about the record, but it doesn’t seem to stand out enough, so your mind forces you to ignore it the first couple of listens. Aside from that, Rosie Thomas is sincere in her efforts here as a singer/songwriter. Some of you might know Rosie Thomas from the group Velour 100 or in the liner notes for credit in Damien Jurado’s songs.

Rosie Thomas’ songs contain stories of love and spirituality that are usually graced by the presents of a softly strummed guitar or subtle keys. Her voice is almost achingly beautiful because she tells her stories with such sincerity that you can hear some pain in her voice. On this record, she doesn’t seem to have as tightly knitted songs as her previous CD. The verses don’t flow together as easily as they did before. In addition, she has dropped a lot of the rhymes and catchiness to her stories. The albums highlight is the song “I Play Music,” where she explains how she was led to play music. “One More Day” is another song that stands out because of its dream like melody.

In comparison to her previous record, this one does not measure up. Its not that she lost her ability to tell great stories in her music, it’s just that her past record was a more concentrated and cohesive release. This record does have some highlight tracks that shouldn’t be breezed over, which still make it a decent record. Rosie Thomas is a great female singer/songwriter, and fans of Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Aimee Mann, or even Carole King will find something likable here.

- 7/10
