There are eleven finely written short stories in Maile Meloy’s new collection titled, Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It. One theme through these stories is the desire of an individual for more than he or she seems to have now or is experiencing. Sometimes those desires are realized, often they are not. Meloy presents real people in relationships that most readers will recognize. Her writing presents just the right amount of conflict among her characters to allow her to use the short story form effectively and not waste a single word.

I am a fan of Maile Meloy’s, having read and loved both of her novels. I thought I’d try her new book of short stories and I can say that not only was I not disappointed, I was wowed! Each of the stories is excellent with something new and different. The pervasive theme that runs through the book is that of conflicted emotions; impulse vs. rationalism; fear vs. curiosity; pull vs. push; loyalty vs. betrayal.

The book opens with a short poem as a preface:

This pretty well sums up the challenges facing the characters in these tightly tuned stories by Ms. Meloy. The first story, ‘Travis, B.”, is about a maimed cowhand who inadvertently walks into a school law class and falls for the teacher. He pursues her while realizing she is beyond his attainment. ‘Red From Green’ is about the complexities and challenges of growing up, becoming an adolescent and the push and pull of desires. ‘Spy vs. Spy is about the lifelong conflict between two brothers who try over and over to connect. “Two-step’ is about two-timing and adultery told in a marvelously eye-rolling way. A couple uses the two-step as a way to end discord. However, the discord in this story is not likely to be resolved by any dance. ‘The Girlfriend’ is a tragic tale about the girlfriend of a murderer. The father of the murdered girl tries to get information from this girlfriend and ends up getting much more than he’d ever bargained for. The need to know outweighed his ability to realize how much he’d be able to cope with. These are just a few of the stories in this collection.

All the stories are excellent. There is not one dud in the book. I loved it and give it my highest recommendation.

“For lovers of the short story format (3.5 stars)” 2009-08-08

This book includes 11 stories and covers a lot of ground: with characters being young, old, American, foreign – - and involved in a number of situations – father/daughter relationships, sibling rivalry, of love and unrequited love, infidelity and of loneliness.

The characters are all flawed in one way or another – they succumb to temptation – knowing full well the impact of the consequences. This excerpt supports the vein of the plot lines for most of the stories – with a middle aged man in a good marriage being attracted to another woman:

“‘Both ways is the only way I want it.’ The force with which he wanted it both ways made him grit his teeth. What kind of fool wanted it one way?…He held his wife and felt himself anchored to everything that was safe and sure, and kept for himself the knowledge of how quickly he could let go and drift free.”

While the story lines can be described as being dark, the author successfully paints the characters as human so you identify with the flaws and the situations they are in. (Good people doing bad things.) It reminded me of a watching a car crash unfold in slow motion – and you can’t take your eyes off it.

The stories are smartly written – clear, crisp and concise. The author manages to intelligently “pull-up” without revealing too much which keeps you wondering about the outcome and what you would have done in a similar situation. That being said, while I found these stories engaging, I was left yearning for more and a deeper understanding of the characters and the outcomes – which left me somewhat unsatisfied after concluding the book.

I read 2 other exceptional short story books prior to this work – “Do Not Deny Me” by Jean Thompson and “Olive Kitteridge” (2009 Pullitzer Prize Winner) by Elizabeth Strout. I highly recommend both books.

A wonderful collection of short stories by a writer at the peak of her form. The writing is spare, all the characters are brilliantly observed, and there is hilarious dialogue, too. Each story is odd and startling in its own way. You’ll want to whip through this book, but don’t. It’s best read slowly so you can savor the language and nuance.

Only By Chance. New to hit the scene, new ideas, new views, new passion for what they do. I am in love with them, each song represents thoughts and feelings all of us have everyday. The band consists of; Robert Graham, Joey Matheson, Ryan Mclaren and Matthew Worth. These boys create beautiful music and they’re funny as fjuck! Vision is proud to represent them, more than proud, honoured.

Tyler: Alright dude well to be formal, thanks for sitting down and chatting dudes!

Joey: No problem at all, THAAAANK YOOOU for sitting down and taking the time to chat with us!

T: Anytime hombre, I love interviewing bands. Great stories great times! So the band just recently came together, how did you guys all meet and what brought about the start of the band?

J: Wellllll… long story short, I moved to Truro, me and my room mate, who I didn’t meet until the night I moved in, Robbie, knew Matt’s room mate, Ryan (our Bass slapper) and then bam, love at first site for all of us …well…. I mean… music wise [laughs]. We all are into the same kind of music and we decided to start jamming, and it’s been working out great since!

T: Thats sweet, especially that it worked out you’d be living together. Only By Chance is a unique name, is there a certain meaning behind it, how did you guys come across the name?

J: Well, before I get into that, Ryan, our Bass player has just walked into the room [laughs] he says “hi everyoooone!” and now back to the question. Well, the name Only By Chance came to be because it was only by chance that I moved to Truro and me and Robbie started playing, then it was by chance that Ryan happened to just get a bass, and by chance that Matt likes boobs AND likes to sing. Does that work for ya? [Laughs]

T: Totally dude, whatever you give works for me. Just one question, where was Ryan, how was he spanking the monkey and who in the bands has boobs that gets Matt to sing?

J: Well, Ryan is constantly spanking the monkey, all over the place and we have a picture of boobies on our guitars so it gives Matt inspiration to sing like an angel, PS. Ryan just farted!

T: Ladies and gentleman, not only are they good musicians, and handsome, they’re genius! Classic man, I cant wait for tour stories from you dudes [laughs]. So I know Joey has been in a couple different bands mainly metal and hardcore, what made you decide to try writing acoustic?

J: I don’t know, a change in pace is always good for music writing. I’ve always had a spot in my heart for acoustic (ie. Last of Nine and Save September, two amazing acoustic artists from Nova Scotia). Don’t get me wrong, I’m still into the hardcore music, but I’m not gonna lie, I love acoustic, it’s calming [laughs].

T: Every time I hear Dallas Green, totally at peace. I feel ya man. Any of the other members feel the same, any in bands before, if so what style, if not what brought up the decision to start writing?

J: Well, none of the other members have ever actually been in a band, they just were around friends who always played, but never really had the drive to start something up until recently. All amazing musicians, they just like to write a lot of their own music, but the bands and people they were around were cover bands. With Only By Chance, all the members get to explore their inner musical being [laughs].

T: Inner musical being? Nice, good choice man [laughs]. So how does each member explore their “inner musical being” with the writing process, do you all sit down and write or is it mainly done individually?

J: Well, it’s mostly individual work, except for Ryan, he’s only our bass player [laughs], jokes, we love him like a son, then we all come together and bring our thoughts to the table and create something from what we wrote. That’s how we dos it Larry.

T: Larry, the cable guy? He’s funny as shit man, damn rednecks. What are, or is the major influence for the band?

J: Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) [laughs] and yeah, Larry the Cable Guy blows [laughs] sorry.

T: Well whatever bro, my mom likes him [laughs]

J: Um, most of the band member’s influences are separate, but as a band in it’s whole, the main influence would have to be the friendship we share because a band isn’t a band if there’s no love from our homies …oh and I can’t forget, Flo Rida

T: That is really the definition of “a band”, friends who create sweet tunes together. Also the definition of “Only By Chance”. That’s the headline for the interview right there [laughs]

J: Totally [ridiculous laughter] you’re quick on your toes Tyler, [laughs] but yeah, friendship really is what defines us.

T: Friendship aside, how would you describe the band, it’s style, it’s energy, it’s…presence to someone?

J: Well, I’m glad you asked that question [laughs] the band’s style would be more along the lines of mellow jello type shit [laughs] but seriously, everyone loves a slow acoustic song with lots of meaning, and that’s what we’re putting out. I’ve recently had my father just pass away, and honestly, this band and music got me through the hard times… don’t get me wrong, it’s still hard, but the music helps and the band is full of energy! [laughts] Just because we write soft stuff, doesn’t mean we aren’t fucking crazy we’re layed back kind of guys, but we like to have our fun. So far, with everyone who has checkout our music and actually listened to our lyrics and junk, they get hooked. We have some older recordings up on myspace right now, but we’re in the process of getting our newer tracks recorded and put up. I can’t wait for people to hear it, we’re very excited as a whole for people to get into our new stuff

T: Yeah dude I’m really sorry to hear about that.I was going to talk to you about that after the intervie, but I am really sorry. When my father passed away i was really upset. it’s not the same, but it’s never a good feeling to lose someone. I can agree with that as well, everyone getting hooked. I heard a recording of it before the MySpace went up,I loved it I think it was Zach Dion that was telling me you guys were really good too so its getting around. On that note any big news coming up, anything we can steal from you about shows or releases?

J: Well, as of right now, we’re just taking it easy, getting all of our songs together, even doing a couple of Coheed and Cambria songs, acoustically, that should be fun [laughs] and we’re going to have some new tracks up on MySpace in the next few weeks. AS WELL! We plan on playing a show here in Truro, hopefully at the beginning of December and then on from there. Maybe hooking up a few shows throughout nova scotia, you know, to get our music out there for people to hear, so everyone, keep an ear or two open for Only By Chance, we’re excited for you all to hear what we have to offer.

T: Gnarly! So dudes that’s about it for me, any shout outs or anything else?
