The guys dropped by Much on Demand on November 19th to debut their latest video ‘Dont Talk to Strangers’ and being the gentlemen they are, allowed me to shoot.

I also see myself living in a warm place, namely somewhere in the West like California.

And since I’ve settled on California, I’m going to live in Evelyn, CA.

Maybe it’s because it’s my name, maybe it’s because it’s warm… and in California. Regardless, I just know I’m going to live there.

If I don’t live there, I have other options, like: Evelyn, Ontario or Evelyn, London. Canada and the UK sound great, too.

London

The Knotty Pine restaurant is located on Wellington Road, London, Ontario. The hotel we were staying in was close by. Feeling peckish one mid-November day around lunchtime we decided to try it out.
The seating area is quite large but a section was closed and of course I happened to stray into it which was rather naughty of me [geddit?]. OK, that’s enough of these kinds of corny jokes. The lady serving told me that the area was only used in very busy times and I was ushered into the main eating area. This was laid out in typical North American economy diner style with the utilitarian, vinyl, upholstered units that can take four adults. I expect much of the trade to the Knotty Pine came from passing truck drivers. We ordered some soup of the day, a beef barley broth, which was quite filling.
Cultural difference no. 1: In Canada, like the U.S., soup is served with crackers. In the U.K soup is invariably served with bread. I found crackers with soup a little odd but quite pleasant. I took advantage of a soup and sandwich deal which was bumper value. The sandwich was a chicken salad.
Cultural difference no. 2: Canadians by default will serve such a sandwich with some dressing – typically some vinaigrette mixture like caesar dressing. In Scotland and the U.K. the default would be a salad sandwich without dressing. I got kind of irritated with this Canadian presumptuousness on occasion. Despite that the sandwich was good.
Cultural difference no. 3: Instead of a sandwich my partner ordered a salad. In Canada and the U.S. they nibble like rabbits on a salad before having their main course. I can’t get my head round this odd habit! In Scotland and the U.K. we would have a salad with our main course hence the name – side-salad. I mean a side salad adds contrast and variety to a main dish: that is the whole point! Instead of being a herbivore and then a carnivore you must be an omnivore, all at once!!
The lady who served us was great. She worked very hard and yet again I was genuinely impressed with Canadian restaurant service. The bill was very reasonable. I put some notes on the plate and was waiting for change but it never appeared within a reasonable amount of time so I assumed it had been taken to be a tip. We were not bothered in the least having had a very good value for money lunch.

This past weekend I came across a few interesting articles on personal support workers and medications (psw.ca PSW Administer Medications & PSW Canada’s Blog Caught in the Middle).

After quickly reading those articles it certainly raises the question of what to do? The first article states that while it’s fishy to administer meds you should make a qualified decision. The second was a press release to newspapers stating that PSW’s should not take part in administering medications.

Personally I’m on the fence. On one hand I’ve seen co-op students administer medications. Certainly a big no-no. On the other hand PSW’s outside of union employment may be taking their jobs in their hands if they complain to higher ups about the whole med giving process.

Ultimately this probably falls into the do what’s right category. Each individual personal support worker knows the workplace setting, co-workers and bosses. Weighing all of these issues is a must IMO when it comes to making a decision on administer medications or standing up to the employer

A friend said to me this week, “There’s too much leadership talk. Leadership needs to result in action.”

I couldn’t agree more. And for a great example of this, visit Calvary Assembly in Cambridge, Ontario.

When I walked through the doors of the newly renovated facility at last week, it wasn’t the beautiful new lobby that made the strongest impression on me. It wasn’t the re-vamped worship centre that struck me. It wasn’t even the world-class children’s ministry space that left my jaw hanging open.

It was seeing leadership in action.

Here in bricks and mortar, was living proof that when a God-given vision drives a ministry truly remarkable things can happen. I had long known Calvary Assembly as a place that was committed to impacting their community for Christ. In their new facility I saw this focus come to life.

They didn’t just talk about valuing community. They built it in to the essence of their space, from the Starbucks-rivaling coffee bar, to the conversation nooks throughout the facility.

They didn’t just talk about valuing children. They created a Disney-inspired wing where every child, and parent, will know that children matter.

They didn’t just talk about impacting their community. They created an indoor play-space for children, where parents can drop in, watch their children play, and enjoy coffee and conversation.

I came away from my visit inspired and challenged. The challenge was to look at my own leadership and ask, “How much is just talk, and how much results in action?”

How would you assess your own leadership on the talk versus action scale?

Sales rose 5.1 percent to 45,818 units in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, Canadian Real Estate Association Chief Economist Gregory Klump said in a telephone interview. That is 2 percent more than the previous record set in May 2007, and 74 percent above a recent low in January, the group said in a statement from Ottawa.

“Low interest rates and upbeat consumer confidence continue to release the pent-up demand that built late last year and earlier this year,” CREA President Dale Ripplinger said in the statement.

Canada’s five-year mortgage rate was 5.49 percent in the first week of October, near the 58-year low of 5.25 percent set in April. The country’s central bank (Bank of Canada) said in late July that the country’s first recession since 1992 had ended.

Sales records were set in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, the report said. The average nationwide price also rose to a record C$341,079 ($326,500), 21 percent higher than a year earlier.

Here is a short clip of a round from a Thai boxing match held at Studio 7. Please enjoy. I will post more later. I have also posted another video of Mehdi and I training. It was funny because there are 3 Thai instructors in the ring and me the only Filipino. Hey I sort of fit in . The camp is getting busy. Everyday more people arrive. We have had guests here from Australia, Russia and the Philippines.

The day was low key. I woke up, meditated and followed a Yoga routine that I had downloaded on my I Pod. I felt great even though last night I had that MMA, Muay Thai, Thai Massage combo. After I had breakfast, a cappuccino, read my book, while listening to Christmas songs outside on the cafe’s patio. Pretty neat huh? Afterwards we jumped on some motorcycles and went to MBK, one of Thailand’s largest malls. You guessed it, more shopping for the guys, than off to Black Canyon for some top notch coffee.

Back on the motorcycle to get back to training. It was hot to train, but the cool wind really helped. Than again back to Lumpini Bazaar for more shopping. This night, like all nights here, we have been staying up to 3.00 AM watching soccer. We have to stay up pretty late to keep Mehdi company. He fights on Dec 4 around 11.00 PM, so we are trying to get him used to being active at that time. Good nite Kombat Arts, I miss you guys Jd

When they take their Ontario winter time resort holiday, vacationers expect to experience crisp clea

When they take their Ontario winter time resort holiday, vacationers expect to experience crisp clear days in a landscape draped in a fluffy white blanket of fresh fallen snow. They want to be able to skate or fish on glass smooth frozen lakes and they want to ski or snowmobile on an adequate base of snow. Over the last few years, Ontario resort owners have found that they can no longer count on the abundant snowfalls of the past that attracted a steady stream of vacationers and guaranteed resorts a long and profitable winter season. The current trend in Ontario’s weather of milder winter time temperatures and reduced snowfall could prove disastrous for Ontario’s resort industry. However, by following the guidelines stated below, you will be well on your way to creating a memorable winter getaway in Ontario’s resort region regardless of what the weather brings.

If you are insistent upon having a winter getaway filled with outdoor activities that require a great deal of snow, it is imperative to consider what experts predict the weather to be like. The winter of 2006/2007, which the record keepers say was the mildest winter ever, wreaked havoc on Ontario’s tourism industry. The unusually mild temperatures and lack of snow adversely affected traditional winter outdoor activities such as snowmobling, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, and ice fishing. In areas that experienced especially mild weather, some tourist and winter-based industries were forced to shut down and lay-off employees. Ontario’s largest ski resort, Blue Mountain in Collingwood, was forced to lay off some 1,300 workers when it shut down for the first time in its 65-year history due to lack of snow. They reported that over the usually booming Christmas holiday, week room occupancy rates dropped a staggering 40% from the same period last year.

Along those same lines, if you plan on taking part in outdoor recreational activities that rely on the snow, it is important to plan a winter holiday in Ontario’s resort region in areas that have traditionally been associated with colder temperatures and more snow. Some Ontario resort areas have been affected more than others by the rise in wintertime temperatures. Due to its geographic location, the Haliburton Highlands, a popular resort region located two and a half hours northeast of Toronto, has always experienced winter temperatures that average a few degrees cooler than other Ontario resort areas. Over the past several years, when tourist regions such as Muskoka and Collingwood had little or no snow, Haliburton had an ample supply. At times, Haliburton was the only place in central Ontario – including the North Bay region – that had appreciable amounts of snow. For this reason, the Haliburton Highlands may be just the place you need to consider when planning your winter holiday travel plans.

Winter visitors to the Haliburton Highlands have a wealth of winter-based tourist attractions and activities to choose from including hundreds of kilometres of groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, alpine skiing, and fabulous ice fishing. However, people who plan a winter getaway in the Haliburton Highland’s are not limited to activities based solely on how the weather behaves. Although this region has access to many groomed snowmobile trails, guests of this resort town come from all over the province and the northern states to Haliburton because they know that Haliburton has great trails-these trails are beautiful in the snow and serve as an excellent place to take advantage of cross-country skiing and dog sledding. However, when snow is minimal, the trails still serve as a great place for a day hike and offer spectacular scenery. For many, the Haliburton Highlands , offers everything to people who are looking for a winter getaway in Ontario’s resort region.

Fortunately for Ontario’s tourism industry, all reports indicate a colder and snowier winter season ahead. According to the Farmers Almanac, the winter of 2007/2008 will be “a colder than normal winter with a greater average complement of precipitation.” This is great news for Ontario’s many winter resort and tourist operators who have, over the past few years, seen their businesses suffer from lack of snow and higher temperatures. However, one good winter may only be a reprieve for many in Ontario’s resort industry that rely on revenues derived from a good winter season. Ontario tourist operators, not fortunate enough to be located in areas that experience temperatures cold enough to sustain winter based activities, will have to reassess their businesses and look for other ways of attracting winter tourists. In the meantime, relying on the advice above will ensure a memorable winter holiday in Ontario’s resort region.

alphainventions The ongoing battle regarding Development Charges in Halton Region has been an up and

alphainventions

The ongoing battle regarding Development Charges in Halton Region has been an up and down battle with a lot of input from all sides. With all the different input, it can get confusing on just what happened in the end. For some, especially those who bought homes in Halton, it seems they got good news in regards to not having to pay the increase.

In my last blog, I was wondering just who was going to pay the freight on the development charges. Fortunately, I have received some clarification on just what is happening. The following is from Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, who wants to make sure there is full understanding of the issue. I invite you to visit the link and see the answers yourself.

I appreciate the Mayor taking the time to bring this clarification forward.

- – - – - -

I saw your posting about the Region’s financial plan in which you said you were needing some clarifications, and I hope the below is helpful.

http://www.region.halton.on.ca/Council/video-archive/video-111809.htm

This is the Nov 18 Halton Council meeting.

At 41:40 on the tape, Item 4 (the Financial Plan and the payments you are discussing) from A&F is covered. The debate is clear and easy to follow, I believe. It only takes 21 minutes, but if you care about this issue, it’s about the most important 21 minutes you can spend to learn about the topic. I hope you will view it.

The section runs from 41:40 until 65:30 (approx). At 62:20, a Councillor characterises the payment as a loan to the Region, and at 64:00 I ask the Region’s lawyer to clarify that it is not a loan, which he does clarify, and then at 64:30 Councillor Tom Adams asks really clear questions that establish that there is no interest and no loan and no form of promise to repay by the Region, whereupon the debate ends and Council adopts the Plan.

Dave Fontaine sent me a message on Facebook about his band Sleep the Season’s final concert at The Merchant Ale House in St Catharines, Ontario on December 27th, 2009.

I searched on youtube for their music and found two videos which I am posting here for you to view.

I’ve given them some advice to upload all of their music videos for their band to sleep the season’s youtube channel.

They plan to release their new EP on Dec 27, 2009 at the concert.

Harold and I both agree, this band sounds like The Beatles.

Video and Lyrics provided by youtube BeatlesCentral

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby, picks up the rice
in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face
that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie, writing the words
of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there’s nobody there
What does he care

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby, died in the church
and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt
from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong

London

Boston Pizza is a chain of pizza houses effectively based in Canada but extending somewhat into the U.S. Established in the 1960s, where an ex-R.C.M.P played a critical role [as well as getting his man, perhaps, he got his pizza!], Boston Pizza parlours now appear everywhere across Canada. The business has been a success story from a variety of perspectives: from the original concept of combining sports bar with family pizza restaurant to that of being an ardent supporter of charities.
Our hotel in London, Ontario, was located close to a Boston Pizza outlet and since my partner and I are both passionate about eating good pizza we thought we would give it a try for supper one evening.
We visited the Wellington Road, London, Ontario Boston Pizza branch in mid-November. At first we were going to seat ourselves in the sports bar section but the music was just a little too loud so we instead found a table in the family restaurant area which still had music playing but at a lower volume.
The atmosphere of the pizza parlour was predictably quite garish because of the posters and ads displayed; a few, not unpleasantly, vulgar stops beyond what I would term panache.
Our Canadian waitress was very good. We were made welcome in a friendly and sincere fashion that had become a pattern to us of Canadian hospitality. We ordered some Mondavi white wine. Generally, I am not a lover of Californian wine but La Maison du Robert Mondavi is an exception. I believe we had a dry white Sauvignon which would have been a district wine from the legendary Napa Valley in California; it was excellent. We then both ordered a small [6 inch] pepperoni and mushroom pizza. We were both hungry and glad the pizza arrived a short time later; it was delicious. There was something quite unique and hand-made to me about the topping, dough and crust. Half-way through our supper the Canadian waitress came and asked us very civilly if everything was ok. This engagement is another standard of Canadian customer service, something we see very occasionally in provincial areas of the U.K. but not a feature to be taken for granted. I ate all my pizza but my partner was struggling and left a few pieces. When were settling the bill we were asked if we would like to take the un-eaten pieces away. I said “yes” and they were presented to us in a box to take away.
The bill was very reasonable by my standards; naturally, as a Scot, I tend to equate Canadian dollars with British pounds. The waitress service was excellent and once again I was really impressed with the interpersonal skills of Canadian waiting staff.
Just writing this review and thinking of that delicious pizza is making me hungry!

Today was HOT! It was hot enough to respect the heat, but pleasant enough to appreciate the other options: cold rain back in BC where I am building an Ark. Today I got up late. Needed the rest and I was ONE big sore muscle. I started off the day with some quick meditation, breakfast and then I was off to the Channel 7 Studios. Every Sunday the channel 7 studio shows fights. Thanks Pak for getting us in! There were 6 fights and all of them were good. I have recorded a couple of rounds here and there. Please be patient as the internet connection here sucks and it takes me awhile to upload. Please watch them. I risked life and limb to get them to you; if I don’t make it out, please tell my story.

There were some rounds were all they did was elbow and knee each other. And when a kick landed it was clearly audible to the whole crowd. The crowd itself was a spectacle, with betting and cheering going on, it was like a scene from Bloodsport.

After the fights, we went off to eat and hit some weights. After all of that we hooked up with Cartoon, a good friend of Mehdi’s. Cartoon produces some pretty awesome Thai shorts. Her second specialty is finding us the best places to eat. When I met Cartoon 1 year ago we had the BEST sea food ever. Tonight we were not disappointed. She just kept feeding me! This is one of those rare times were I had to say “no more.” I was so stuffed. But in all sincerity it was really good sea food.

After that awesome meal I dragged myself back home. It was approximately 10.30 PM; time for a traditional Thai massage. I spent 300 baht for an hour and a half massage. This is approximately $10 Canadian. A Thai massage is like MMA, Thai boxing and a massage mixed together!! No seriously, these little Thai women use their whole body (elbows, knees etc) to find every trigger point in your body. I came so close to tapping out. I wish I brought my mouthpiece with me. It was mind boggling how strong they can be. I forgot how much I love / hate Thai massages. So now I sit here back in my apartment at 1.00 AM, Monday morning, drinking Singha, typing this blog, while the rest of my team watches soccer on my TV. Have a great day Kombat Arts!!! Jd

Today was a day to get used to everything again in Thailand. I was totally lethargic today. The day started off with some miscellaneous errands here and there. The highlight of the day was the night time training. There is something really cool about training outside in the night. This set the mood for our movie: Ninja Assassin!

Ok off to Center World to watch Ninja Assassin. Man it was good to see a movie on traditional martial arts. The Thai’s have it right when it comes to their movies. First of all you have to select your seating; you can’t just sit anywhere. And in our case, we got a couple of reclining coaches. Luxury!

Afterwards we went back to Patpong for the guys to do more shopping. I found myself really dozing off and I can tell you I was SO HAPPY to find my bed at the end of the night. Tomorrow we go watch some fights! Jd

Ok, I’ve finally made it here! It took us awhile, but when we landed we found Pak (he coordinates Mehdi’s training in Thailand) and we were whisked away to our accommodations. Before we got there though, we had to stop off at another hotel and grab Fred, one of Mehdi’s students on the way. We are staying at the President Park Ebony Wing. I attached a video showing my room:

After getting situated in our rooms we HAD to eat. Mehdi wanted a chicken sandwich. So we have travelled all this distance to eat chicken sandwiches! That’s ok, we will have traditional Thai food tonight. After we ate we went to check out the new site of Pak’s new training camp which was next door. It’s pretty exciting to see the camp start from bare bones.

We wanted to work out tonight, but we needed pads, so we decided to go to Lumpini stadium to do some shopping for gear. In order to beat the traffic Mehdi suggested that we hire motorcycle drivers. I was a little skeptical of the safety factor, but it was an awesome drive! There is nothing more exhilarating than speeding along the highway precariously between vehicles. There were times when my legs almost scrapped against the sides of idling vehicles! Shopping for gear was a blast and we eventually made our way back to camp.

Back at the camp we started Mehdi’s training. We are the 1st guys to work out at the camp. Mehdi did 10 rounds of 3 minutes, with 1 min rest. Pak was on hand to guide the training. That was pretty cool. I learned a lot from Pak in the few hours we were there. Check it out here:

While we were training we drew a large crowd. It felt neat to train outside with spectators. Eventually some other fighters showed up, and soon we had good energy as the athletes banged away on pads and on each other.

A quick shower after the training and then we took the train to Center World for an actual Thai dinner. From there we jumped into a cab and made our way to the Patpong Bazaar. Here we continued with more shopping and browsing. We are going to finish our day by going back to the airport to pick up Ramin, one of my students and a good friend of Mehdi’s. Tomorrow we have to do more training, shop, watch movies and get an adapter for Mehdi’s XBOX. He actually packed his XBOX in his carry on! Mehdi and I have got about 6 to 8 hours sleep in the last 40 hours! It is time to sleep-Jd

alphainventions My attention was drawn to a Toronto Star article concerning Mississauga Mayor Hazel

alphainventions

My attention was drawn to a Toronto Star article concerning Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and her son Peter, a local real estate entrepreneur. This article goes over “the decision by Mississauga council to launch a judicial inquiry into a controversial $14.4 million land deal he initiated – which will also probe conflict-of-interest allegations involving the mayor.”

We have seen in Oakville where decisions were being made concerning allegations of illegal wiring putting children’s lives at risk and former Mayor Ann Mulvale, whose mentor is Hazel McCalliion, was in negotiations for a Mattamy donation. Was that a conflict of interest? I will let you decide.

But the bigger picture to us all, is something brought forward to me by another reader. Without the facts, I can’t make a specific allegation but, we should be monitoring our councillors in preparation to make our voting decisions come November 2010.

This just isn’t an Oakville problem (as seen my an earlier blog that gave donation statistics for Toronto politicians and the Vaughan problem) but, we should be aware that politicians will be making decisions now to ensure their power base (money) is consolidated for the next election.

Look at the Edgemere decision. Even though the developer was legally obligated to hand over the shorefront strip, he argued and got some density concessions. Why even bother when he had to dedicate the land?

Another interesting area was up in Milton – or Mattamy-Ville, as other reader has aptly named it. Big argument over Development Charges and Mattamy led the Complaint Brigade – with a plethora of Voluntolds in support. After new homeowners were threatened with an almost $8000 increase due to the levy, it seems now that they don’t have to pay.

But who will? I stand to be corrected on this but it seems that Halton will get a loan from the developers to build the necessary infrastructure and then will give future concessions of some sort.

WHO WILL PAY THIS LOAN BACK??? THE TAXPAYER?

We are already paying for the water pipeline that allowed Peter Gilgan et al to make their fortunes developing the Milton area. And who voted to make these changes and why? At first Halton was strong on the new development paying for itself, even saying so in an online report- since removed. It will be interesting to see who gets the developer’s support the next election.

Appears that, as someone pointed out to me, Mattamy rules the roost in Halton. I hope the Milton taxpayer is happy with the free bus rides they might get for Christmas, courtesy of Mattamy. Nothing like buying someone off with cheap trinkets.

But have you had your baby’s spine checked for nerve interference?

Often a newborn’s spine can be harmed during the birth process. A normal, uncomplicated delivery puts 90 lbs. of compressive pressure on a newborn’s delicate spine. One medical study of 1,250 babies examined 5 days after birth showed that 95% had spinal misalignments related to the birth process, causing lowered immunity, poor digestion, and sleeplessness.

Babies are gently adjusted using low-force techniques equal to the pressure on a touch-tone phone, reconnecting their nerve system, giving them a great start in life.
