Woot! I’m in the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta program. I’m installing the program as I write this. It’s a good thing too because I had just been researching Wikipedia for a comparison of wordprocessors and I had just installed OpenOfficeOrg 3.2.0 developer build. I normally wouldn’t want to write my Statement of Purpose on such beta software but OOO lacks parity against Office. I tried importing my SOP in there and while it looked good, it didn’t preserve revision history. I have no idea how to turn it on and I do not wish to learn. (Maybe I should save as docx?) The home and student edition of office 2007 that came with my new laptop (ASUS UL80Vt) is not activated so I can only use it a few times more before it will lock me out.

Ok, so the starter edition installed and oh wow, what’s that? Advertisement? Crap.

Ok, MS, if you want to give me ads, the starter edition better be free when it leaves beta.

Also, no revision history looks like either in the starter edition.

Levi has an interesting post about quantum mechanics and Speculative Realism. A whole slew of issues

Levi has an interesting post about quantum mechanics and Speculative Realism. A whole slew of issues arises surrounding epistemological versus ontological realism particularly in regards to the issue of observation and the uncertainty principle. As the Dailykos post he references makes clear, decoherence does not assert that everything depends on observation, but that at some point quantum phenomenon appears as macroscopic reality. While decoherence does not explain this transition it does not justify, as Gabriel Catren makes clear in his contribution to Collapse V, a mathematized transcendental couplet comprised of observer and experience (or correlationism).

Catren describes physics as a theory of objects made of a formalism (mechanics) and many kinds of objects (such as fields, particles, systems and so forth). The bulk of the essay is dedicated to showing how QM demonstrates objects and qualities as self synthesizing without the need to appeal to a transcendental subject. Objects are then defined as “a set of invariant objective properties that manifests itself through a phenomenological multiplicity of phases.”

But the source of objective or invariant components becomes problematic if objects only ever become other objects ad infinitum. Catren’s response to this is the utilization of universal operators which he likens to Whitehead’s eternal objects also refering to them as universal ideas. These ideas which make ingressions into nature are discussed in terms of mathematics – any given object is an expression of certain universal measurements or other physical properties.

What I cant grasp is how the universal ideas (if they are to avoid anthrocentrism) can be separated from being a thinkable potentiality such as Deluze’s category of the virtual. Steven Shaviro made this connection some time ago here. It seems that there can be no guarantee as to the contours of conceptualization (via Brassier) or of transformation (against Meillassoux’s logical access to chaos). This is the crucial importance of identity in the Laruelleian sense. Yet even in Laruelle there is the tension between the object and the point (the object being the zero-point of being).

The issue remains that the object (at least as it is used by Harman and Bryant) is a relocation and shrinkage of being (or ground in the Schellingnian sense) whereas the point (functioning in place of the object) is a formalization of an epistemological limit regarding becoming. For OOO/OOP it seems that being becomes de-humanized (flattened) whereas for tm/neo-vitalism it is the ignorance surrounding the absolute which is flattened or annihilated. The function of thinking in the former remains an enigma.

Also, see Michael’s excellent post here.

Worauf muss man dabei achten?

As the (currently) only local training provider of Web 2.0 training, including social media marketin

As the (currently) only local training provider of Web 2.0 training, including social media marketing and online networking, it was disappointing to find that the Hull Skills Fund declined ALL applications for training in this area. All applicants were asked to resubmit their applications answering questions to a template (that had been distributed after the initial applications were sent in) and all were declined again on the basis that this technology had no direct business benefit.

The Hull Skills Fund was set up by Hull City Council to be reactive to the economic downturn by amending its criteria to be more flexible in supporting small businesses of Hull. The fund was designed to deal with issues relating to training, employment and the growth of sustainable small businesses and skills in the City of Kingston upon Hull.

The criteria was amended in August 2009 to further support SMEs with less than 10 employees, with a training grant of up to 70% up to a total cost of £3000, to ensure that employees have the right skills to meet the demands of employers and try to boost the local economy in the economic downturn. Grants also considered for training that have a direct business benefit to the organisation and accompanied by a supporting business case.

The training that businesses were signing up to were “Explore your business with digital” which, by the end of the course, the SME has a fully functioning website with video and audio content, a website that is search engine optimised and seach engine submitted, including an e-commerce and email marketing facility- to name but a few of the benefits. We also introduce open source software such as OpenOffice.org which provides a significant savings than Microsoft products. More importantly, our students have said that they feel more “confident” about using technology, that they didn’t realise how “easy” it was to implement into their business and were now “aware” of the new technologies available to them that could help them save money.

We were told that one resubmitted application was declined because the panel could not understand why a business needed to be on page one/top of the Google search … hmmm – do the panel ever go beyond the 3rd page of a Google search, let alone the first.

Question : How much is that worth to a business? Can you quantify it? Can you measure it?

Certainly – at least the business will still be around during any down turn as they continue to keep in contact with their clients using their social networks like LinkedIn and keep up to date and share with like-minded people via Twitter. Not only do SMEs save on their bottom line costs but they can also MEASURE their return on investment using all the analytical tools available. Can you measure how many people actually read a poster on the wall? Or listen to your radio advertisement during the day?

In the initial stages SMEs can quantify the benefits in adopting Web 2.0 technologies in terms of savings. The “AFTERS” are the business streams because they are keeping in contact with their customers and communicating on a regular basis via an online network.

Our “Podcasting for Business” and “Promote your business with video on the web“, enable the SME to create video and audio content on their sites. Included as part of the course is presentation skills that can be used in the real world as well the virtual. These presentation skills help you win business.

Why would you need a video on your website? Because people BUY people. Imagine that you are doing your introduction – once – and this can be viewed whenever someone visits your website. Your client gets to meet and know you before they pick up the phone or email or, better still, CONNECTS with you via a network. Testimonials – especially video testimonials (can you “fake” those) add credibility to your work and your ability. Videos also can show your workmanship.

For SMEs in the professional sectors, these courses can provide additional income streams as they learn to create their own materials that they can sell.

We were told that “social media marketing/online networking” training was not essential in today’s world of business – but a Quality Assurance course is. Do they connect with Business Link who are providing presentations on this – BUT no hands-on training which Imagine dpm provide. We were told that the panel were asking “Why do businesses need an online presence?”

Question : How will doing this training add to employability?

As the Hull 14-19 Partnership Creative and Media Diploma Champion (2009), I have seen an incredible wealth of talent in our young people. We have 50 young people at Level 2 and 9 at Level 3. All of these students are required to do 10 days work experience. However, neither local businesses nor education, nor public sector for that matter, know how to use the online tools for enterprise. How are they going to positively engage these young people and maximise their skills if they don’t know how to do it themselves?

All the businesses that do our training sign up to providing work-experience opportunities for our young people – whether it be IT, Creative and Media, Business, Administration and Finance. SMEs are very busy running their business and, as business grows, it becomes harder to maintain the one marketing tool that is accessed by the world – their website – and now these websites can be accessed on mobile phones. So what does it mean for employment and work experience – our SMEs need these young people and their skills and want to grow. But Hull Skills Fund says “no”.

Our courses have been created to be jargon free, fun, productive and hands-on with real results on completion and after the course. They are designed for SMEs, social enterprises, education and the public sector, with the aim for greater connectivity, communication, inclusion and benefit.

I would like to know who is on this panel – I have been told that I am not allowed to know who they are – the panel also refuse to attend our “Is Web 2.0 for You?” presentation that explains what is happening with Web 2.0 and why it is important to (at least) know about it. I wonder if they have a mobile phone… when did they first get one? What type of mobile phone do they have – is it a smart phone like an iPhone? When did they first learn how to use email? When did they first get broadband?

Finally, taken directly from Hull City Council’s website :

We are working to ensure that the city is maximising the opportunities that technology can bring. We exploring how technology can help to regenerate the city and create jobs.

As well as working on a strategic level the council is actively involved in a number of partnerships and projects:

Hull CityDigital, a contact point for digital activities in the City. Includes partners from private and public sector.

Hull ICT Alliance a public/private sector consortium that brings together innovative organisations with the aim of encouraging and assisting the development and use of ICT among firms in the Hull area.
Connected Hull looks at the infrastructure and service needs of the future – ensuring Hull can remain the Capital of broadband Britain.

Eurocities’ Knowledge Society Forum – Telecities, Hull represents the UK on the Advisory Board of a trans-European network, working actively to lobby EU policy on issues relating to the Knowledge Society and the Knowledge Economy. Use the ‘eurocities’ link on the left for more information.

Interactive TV programme delivered by a Special Purpose Delivery Vehicle called Broadband Capital. Revolutionising Teaching and Learning provides video-rich learning through digital interactive television and broadband-enabled PCs for school-age pupils, young people and adult learners. Use the ‘broadbandcapital’ link on the top left for more information.”

I fail to understand how the Hull Skills Fund can reject any training that will contribute to Hull becoming a “Knowledge-based City” when it is written on their own website.

As always, it is always the SMEs and micro businesses, who employ 93% of the nation’s workforce, who are discriminated against in terms of acquiring essential IT skills for this modern age and keep ahead in business.

I welcome any comments that you may have.

Philosophical Gambling: Let’s Make a Bubble

The Velvet Howler made a brilliant, off-the cuff diagnosis of Graham Harman’s so-called Object-Oriented Philosophy over in a Perverse Egalitarianism thread that started out light but has gotten more substance. It is really worth repeating for it pulls Harman metaphysical speculation into the general sphere of important societal trends and valuations, and opens the question of how we should do philosophy, and if our production of philosophy mirrors our production of other commercial commodities. Bryan was responding to Graham’s often stated thought that philosophy had to be more in the gambling game, that one had to take more metaphysical risks, a sentiment that I might applaud, but then I also ask: Is it gambling if nothing is at risk? or, What does it mean to gamble without real money? Upon this Bryan made a wonderful analogy between Harman’s gambler metaphor fueled by a “One Great Idea” approach to philosophy, finding it worth noting that the entire SR/OOP franchise mimicked the speculative bubble thinking that drives markets towards their collapse:

…There is undoubtedly a “bad” kind of speculation, which evokes the “spec”/”speculare” we find in political economy: risk taking for the sake of profit. Certain forms of speculative behavior, it seems to me, cannot be separated from their metaphysical counterpart. Here I think Harman’s thought becomes something of a mirror of contemporary American attitudes towards finance: his speculative gambling in search of that “one great idea” inevitably leads to the construction of a metaphysical “bubble” (his defense and support of panpsychism I read as a symptom of this) built on unsure ground and upon the continual deferral of the debt it accumulates. In that sense, OOP can be read, perhaps a bit too reductively for my tastes, but nevertheless as a form of packaged, repackaged, and traded collateralized debt obligations, which will inevitably collapse once the basis is revealed to have been nothing but a “toxic asset”, a transcendental illusion, a house of cards.

This was particular to my own experience when I read Harman’s theory of causation. While stimulative of thought, the more I took it seriously the more disappointing it became. As I heard audio lectures that followed my reading of his theory it seemed that indeed there was a kind of “debt” of explanation or coherence that Harman simply pushed into the future, a kind of doubling down into the next book (Latour) and a refinancing that went along with a method of repackaging. First his philosophy was part of a whole movement called “Spectulative Realism” (composed of thinkers who agree upon almost nothing), then it became “OOP” and had even spawned its own “splinter group” called OOO (insuring it the position of an imagined orthodoxy). One cannot help but feel with some force that this is running parallel to the dividend markets that simply cut and repackaged “risk” under new names creating a bubble of excitement which simply fed upon itself. Consider Levi’s recent enthusiasm over a new Graham Harman diagram, brought on by a general love of diagrams, which by virtue of simply being diagrams Levi feels get at a “bit” of the “real”:

Harman provides a brief commentary on how he’s thinking about his diagrams here. I’ll have to think through this more, but my initial impression is that this is really exciting stuff. I confess that his theory of vicarious causation and his analysis of the four-fold are the aspects of his ontology that have left me most scratching my head. [found here]

Nevermind that Harman’s theories have gotten Levi scratching his head (which means he doesn’t understand them or find them convincing), and never mind that before seeing this diagram Levi has linked his new OOO (brand) to this head-scratching OOP, this new diagram is “really exciting stuff”(!) Hey, I might actually understand what I’ve been supporting. Speculative bubble. Is this not just the kind of thing that was done in financial markets when repackaged debt was then rated as “A” level and put into assemblages of investment? Harman’s theory made no sense, but this diagram of it is really exciting, let’s buy some (and I say this as a devote diagrammist).

Add to this speculative excitement several other franchising maneuvers, the announced start of a “peer reviewed” OOO journal (which some people have speculated is only another “blog”) and even an All-American OOO conference and we really have something happening. These packaging movements meet squarely it seems with Harman’s own Great Idea concept of philosophical significance, the thinking that all the Great Philosophers were really exaggerators that some how fooled the public long enough to get their ideas off the ground. Once enough people “buy into” the intial debt of explanation it is passed off onto the whole group, the bad morgage is cut into tiny Madoff pieces and distributed everywhere. Philosophy as Ponzi scheme. It brings to mind Harman’s notion of a market place of ideas, and how he once stonewalled any attempts to find correspondences between Spinoza’s thinking and his own. “Spinoza’s stock…” he told me, “is simply over valued right now” as if he were a financial advisor and I should be looking into something to invest in. What does this mean, Spinoza’s stock is over-valued? Harman was not looking so much for the kind of discussions that found correspondences in cross-fertilization, as those that pushed the mercantile futures of his own one Great Idea, the “get rich quick” “buy stock low” concept of philosophical investment. One cannot help but feel that Bryan over at Velvet Howler really has struck at the Capitalist, all-American cord of the OOP movement and franchise. One must speculate because speculation (combined with constant repackaging and associative re-valuation) differs the debt of philosophical explanation. It allows one’s theory to proliferate in the kind of meme-like method that Levi finds so appealing.

Paying the Philosophical Debt?

The more significant questions might be, how is this different than just a bunch of fellows getting together that like the ideas of each other, and then selling/convincing others that the very idea of their group is appealing, pulling resources together? And how are we to weigh this organizational property against the very ethic that Bryan calls our attention to, a kind of All-American speculative bubble wherein the Debt of explanation or justification is passed along into greater and more diverse assemblages of investment? Do the memes of philosophy have to stand for anything? Does Graham Harman actually have to a coherent Theory of Causation and not just the name of a Theory of Causation (called “Vicarious Causation”)? Do those who align themselves with OOP and become franchised to it actually have to understand and become convinced of OOP itself? Is there a harm, a social harm, in replicating the logic of Capitalist speculative bubble-making within the productive means of philosophy?

I suspect that the methods of packaging and Debt deferral are detrimental to both philosophy and social being, and that (in some tension to ethical aims) meme-like profusion might be essential to internet blogged philosophy. One wants a catchy name (or name of a principle or fallacy), and an easy to understand enemy, and then a loose cadre of alliances, maybe even a logo like The Brights wield. But also serious questions about the value of thought produced through such a speculative means do remain, a sense that yes, debt cannot simply be passed down into some other form without us losing the sense that philosophy is actually being done. How is it that so much philosophical activity has organized itself around OOP when no one, even the most aligned, actually find the theory coherent or convincing? And does it matter? And as a meme-type shouldn’t the value of its ideas (the implication of what they say about and reinforce about us and the world), and it means of reproduction, fall under criticism? I think that these are very important questions for those who consider the ethical value of internet philosophical idea sharing, especially amid its networking powers. Both the mode and the concept of our visions play at large in the world, and it is the philosophical check of criticism that often keeps the spread of ideas from simply becoming the spread of memes.

As Bryan responds in the thread to a briefer summation of the above:

“…I think in some way the perspective of how Harman’s speculative metaphysics mirrors contemporary political economy also fits nicely with your argument you made over at Frames /sing, about how, in his very attempt to decenter and remove the human from the privileged point of access for any “first philosophy,” Harman actually naturalizes the human by smuggling it through the backdoor, vis-a-vis the Cartesian withdrawal-into-self through universal doubt (and its Husserlian extension)-cum-”objects withdrawing into themselves.”

* This general topic has bearing upon Carl’s recent thoughts on the potentiating relationship between Gramsci and blogging over at Dead Voles.

* For those who don’t want to wade through the chaotic comments section of the original thread, you might enjoy reading Bryan at Velvet Howler’s excellent summation of his ideas and intutions: here.

On Friday, some friends and I made the trip to see Paranormal Activity (review coming soon). By pure happenstance we bought tickets to a digital projection showing, and as the lights dimmed we wondered briefly if there would be any noticeable difference in the projection quality.

The answer? Um…hell yeah.

I was “ooo”ing and “awe”ing over the trailers. The green preview screens alone were vibrant and sharp than, and as for Paranormal Activity, well, it’s telling that a scrappy indie shot with a hand held camera looked better than most feature films I’ve seen in some theaters

Seriously, how did I go this long without witnessing a film in digital projection? And how can I go back to traditional film projection? No flickering, no scratches marring the image, no split images…for a movie fan, this is what you want your theater experience to be like. All I can say is, I’m seeing my next big budgeted flick in glorious digital.

Lotus Symphony

http://slashdot.org/story/09/09/13/205253/IBM-Policy-Switches-From-MS-Office-To-OOo

自由軟體社群一早就採用了 Linux、OOo（或更自由的自由軟體）及 ODF 文件了，Slashdot 上的英文原文文章作者還在說「”It’s frequent that we hear of a country or city or company switching from Windows to Linux, but it’s rare that we hear of one third of a million employees being told to use Lotus Symphony (IBM’s OO.o variant) over MS Office, and also to use the Open Document Format when saving files.」
