So, yesterday I accidentially happened upon a launch party for the new ubuntu distribution – Karmic Koala.

I’m all for ubuntu in relation to boot-time, time to boot apps, look and feel etc… but from talking with the geeks at the launch party I realised that ubuntu will never succeed. I run both ubuntu and windows, since some of my needs are only met by windows, especially in regard to being certain that you can access basic functionality with 3rd parties, such as my eBank, my tax registration etc. And apparently so do most ubuntu users.

I learned that even the ubuntu geeks run windows to be able to play the newest games… so it is all over, ubuntu… even your dedicated followers are sleeping with the enemy…

And some tiny details like the fact that you need to actively enable mp3s and similar file-formats is separating ubuntu from being a truly “walk-up-and-use” system for the average user.

I’m perfectly happy running both, though. C’ya,.

As a member of ISO/IEC JTC1 SC34 Working Group 4 (which Mr Norbert Bollow of the Swiss mirror

As a member of ISO/IEC JTC1 SC34 Working Group 4 (which Mr Norbert Bollow of the Swiss mirror committee somewhat bizarrely refers to as “so-called”) and someone directly implicated in his recent blog post, I thought it might be useful to help him understand the situation more clearly.

I have been heavily involved in spreadsheets over the last 14 years working at Datawatch. For the last 9 years, I have been in charge of the Monarch and Monarch Data Pump products, which have interacted heavily with spreadsheets, both from an input and output perspective. We supported (and still support older versions – the file format specifications are not available for later versions) Lotus 1-2-3 as well as Excel, stretching back to Excel 2.1 and Lotus versions well before that.

Datawatch is both a Microsoft and IBM Partner.

The Monarch product is primarily used in conjunction with Excel, with approximately 95% of our users reading, writing, appending and updating Excel spreadsheets, both the older binary formats and the new OOXML format.

We have a large user base of around 500,000 users worldwide and have gained fairly detailed knowledge of how people use and abuse spreadsheets in various ways, as well as how many other vendors import and export spreadsheets from their applications in the 18 years since the first release of Monarch.

Sowing the seeds – versioning

Consequent to the lack of a versioning scheme in ECMA376-1, applications created to consume and create OOXML documents were unable to distinguish between ECMA376-1 and future versions. This should have been addressed in the original specification and certainly at the BRM. It was not, which casts doubt on the unimpeachable sagacity which some seem to attribute to decisions made at the BRM. This sacred cow status, especially surrounding ISO8601 dates is not a healthy thing-it should be subject to scrutiny and review, especially with far more time available to analyze the ramifications of changes than was available at the BRM.

Sowing the seeds – anyone for spreadsheets?

Another aspect of the BRM and indeed much of the process around OOXML is the lack of spreadsheet experts involved. Practically all those involved in the process are really XML and document specialists. Their background, depending on age, is almost always SGML and XML, not VisiCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, Quattro Pro, Excel, Gnumeric and Calc.

Spreadsheets then, became second class citizens in the process, with few people showing them the care and attention showered upon the word processing aspects of the specification.

The XML experts came from the viewpoint of XML Schema, which, many may be surprised to learn, does not itself fully implement ISO8601 dates. It wisely uses a tightly defined subset of ISO8601. Many advocated that ISO8601 dates should be used within OOXML documents. This approach is eminently sensible, since it is much simpler to consume documents with XML technology, if the date data can be easily consumed and processed by common XML tools.

However, spreadsheets have paid very little attention to XML, the file formats have historically been extremely terse and efficient and they have their own design goals which are distinctly different from word processors. One thing that spreadsheets always do, is store and process dates as serial date values. Almost every single spreadsheet file in existence contains serial date values.

The Leap Year Bug – or not

Mr Bollow refers to the the reintroduction of the leap year bug which was introduced by Lotus 1-2-3 and replicated in Microsoft Excel. The very fact I say “introduced by Lotus 1-2-3” gives you an idea how venerable this bug actually is.

This bug has existed for an exceedingly long time and anyone that deals with spreadsheets is well aware of it. In fact, it has really ceased to be a bug and become expected behaviour. I can’t claim this is a good thing, but that is the way that it is.

Now, when you start to deviate from expected behaviour that has existed for decades, you will run into problems. The amount of spreadsheet consuming and producing applications is gigantic and changing the ground rules is not an option if you want any sort of interoperability. The leap year bug itself is not an intrinsic issue with serial dates itself, but an application issue introduced by Lotus 1-2-3 which has become accepted practice.

If Mr Bollow is saying that ISO8601 dates must be used everywhere without exception, then I am assuming he also advocates throwing Unix time over the side in favour of an ISO8601 implementation. Good luck with that. Oh and OpenFormula too. (More later).

Well, maybe semi-reintroduced

In addition, Mr Bollow fails to make the distinction between the two forms of OOXML: Transitional, which is meant to help support “legacy” information and provide a transition vehicle to the more pure Strict form of the standard.

Serial dates for spreadsheet cell values were not allowed in the Strict form and have not been reintroduced in the Strict form by Working Group 4. As far as I am aware, there is absolutely no intention to do so. In addition, many thought that serial dates were allowed in the Transitional form, and it came as some shock to many when I pointed this out originally, back in February.

Another important point is that this only affects spreadsheet cell values, ISO8601 functionality is not being excised by these changes, in fact ISO8601 dates are still allowed in spreadsheet cell values in the Transitional form. Personally, I don’t think this is wise, to fully avoid data loss issues, ISO8601 dates in spreadsheet cell values should not be allowed in Transitional, but be the only allowed date values in Strict.

There are many places where the ISO8601 date specification is used and will continue to be used in spreadsheets in the Transitional form, such as the WEEKNUM function, which has arguments to specify ISO 8601 week numbering.

Can’t we just leave it as it is and let users/vendors sort out the mess?

I have heard this argument, and it immediately marks out anyone who makes it as a complete dillettante with respect to the workings of finance.

In contrast to word processing documents, dates are far more pervasive within spreadsheets and in general, far more critical. Most financial analysis is date-based, reporting is always date based and calculations of financial instruments are mostly date based. It is safe to say that an extremely high proportion of spreadsheets contain dates and that the integrity of those dates is critical.

In ECMA376-1 all dates in spreadsheets were treated as serial dates, so any reading and writing of dates was using this format. With the enforcement of ISO 8601 Dates in the current specification (§18.17.4, §18.17.4.1, §18.17.6.7) and the primary example (§18.3.1.96) featuring the use of ISO 8601 Dates and the newly introduced d attribute (from §18.18.11 ST_CellType), all conforming applications must write dates in SpreadsheetML cells in ISO 8601 format.

This semantic change (no schema-enforced change exists) means that all existing applications fail to open IS2900 transitional spreadsheet documents correctly. The observed behaviour of applications differs from an inability to open the document to silent data loss.

This is a huge problem, if you combine the inability to distinguish two versions of the specification of instance documents with a semantic change, you have a recipe for disaster. To simplify, imagine the chaos that would ensue if you silently changed the currency you use for accounting, but didn’t tell any of your finance staff when.

The silent data loss encountered is made even more problematic, in that the value may be parsed as an incorrect date, instead of a null value or other failure. This means that there is little to alert the user of problems. Dependent formulas will not fail with divide by zero errors, only when there is additional logic that takes into account date boundaries. Visual recognition of the failure will usually be required.

Some other scenarios to consider are when using spreadsheet files that are linked to other spreadsheets, or products that perform lookups to spreadsheets. This means that patching of older applications would have to be absolute and in sync across all organizations involved. For example, a spreadsheet in one country could be used as a lookup for data by spreadsheets in another country. This would mean that all branches, divisions and subsidiaries of an organization may need to ensure that all application software that consumed spreadsheets is patched in sync to avoid data loss.

The applications I tested are easily available ones, but we also need to consider larger applications such as ERP and BI software where bi-directional use of spreadsheets is used. This means that bad data in the local spreadsheet could be propagated to an enterprise-wide system. Patching such enterprise-wide systems is an extremely costly undertaking. Even patching Office suites is a very costly undertaking, in terms of testing and rollout, even if there is no additional software cost from the application vendor.

But how many ECMA376-1 consuming applications can there be?

Another argument is that this is a storm in a teacup, the primacy and purity of ISO8601 dates is more important than the pandering to the handful of applications out there that might encounter a later version and produce errors.

There are many of them out there, obviously Office 2007, which is fairly popular, I’ve heard, but also a huge amount by smaller vendors, such as SAP, Oracle, Lawson, IBM (e.g. support for Excel 2007 in Cognos)– people like that. As mentioned before, most ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and BI (Business Intelligence) vendors deal with XLSX files, some of them bi-directionally – meaning bad data could be propagated globally throughout these enterprise-level systems.

But these are just the tip of the iceberg, there are many bespoke in-house systems, especially in the financial space that rely heavily on Excel files.

But, won’t vendors have been slow to adopt the new formats, I hear you cry. The answer in this case, is no. The benefit of the OOXML format is that it has been much easier and quicker for vendors to implement support than the old binary Excel formats, which were horrible. The documentation was obviously much better and the XML nature meant it was far easier to implement support on different platforms, which is key for enterprise vendors that run on a huge gamut of different OS and technology platforms.

In addition, there has been a lot of pressure from users to support the new formats, as the size of spreadsheets was greatly expanded with the introduction of OOXML. Previously, Excel spreadsheets were limited to 65,536 rows. Enough for any spreadsheet, you may say, but in my experience, they always wanted more.

We frequently had product enhancement requests to allow Monarch to export many hundreds of thousands of rows into spreadsheets, using tricks such as populating one sheet, moving on to the next when the limit was reached and so on.

I wonder about the wisdom of million row spreadsheets, but users will always seek to push the envelope.

Behaviour of existing applications when encountering ISO 8601 Dates

Some testing (earlier this year) was performed on easily available applications, to see what the scenario of using ISO8601 dates in an instance document would look like. The following implementations fail when opening a file which contains no changes introduced in IS29500, except for ISO 8601 dates, with the t attribute of the cell set to “d”. Only Datawatch Monarch 10 will work without error, under the (unlikely) condition that the ISO-8601 date string only includes the date portion. All other tested implementations fail.

Cleaning up the mess

So, the “so-called” Working Group 4 were faced with the following set of problems:

For an existing ECMA 376-1 consuming application, there was no way to distinguish a later version, so the application would happily read and process any future instance, unaware of any changes (especially purely semantic ones!)

For an existing ECMA 376-1 consuming application, there was no way to distinguish between a document of conformance class strict versus one of conformance class transitional.

Changes to implement ISO 8601 dates in SpreadsheetML had not been thought out well at all in the BRM process.

Changes to implement ISO 8601 dates per se had not been thought out well at all in the BRM process (i.e. no subsetting as per the XML Schema spec)

Many assumed that serial dates were still allowed in the transitional form, which one could easily assume based on the lack of strong typing (the cell value, which is the target container for dates) is a string, not a date, with an optional attribute to indicate an ISO8601 date. In addition, there is a large amount of text in the OOXML specification referring to serial dates.

The catastrophic silent data loss issue proven to exist in many applications designed for ECMA376-1.

We all know the various stories about the financial catastrophes that can occur with errors in spreadsheets. Compounding this enormously at the file format level would not be popular amongst organisations such as EUSPRIG or indeed, anyone using spreadsheets at all, which is just about everyone.

So what did Working Group 4 decide to do about this?

Let’s take a look at the Scope statement for IS29500:

"ISO/IEC 29500 defines a set of XML vocabularies for representing word-processing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. On the one hand, the goal of ISO/IEC 29500 is to be capable of faithfully representing the preexisting corpus of word-processing documents, spreadsheets and presentations that had been produced by the Microsoft Office applications (from Microsoft Office 97 to Microsoft Office 2008, inclusive) at the date of the creation of ISO/IEC 29500. It also specifies requirements for Office Open XML consumers and producers. On the other hand, the goal is to facilitate extensibility and interoperability by enabling implementations by multiple vendors and on multiple platforms."

(For anyone that was wondering, Office 2008 was the Mac version.)

Although the preexisting corpus only references Microsoft Office, it certainly applies to the huge corpus of documents produced by applications other than Office, but consumable by Office too.

Since the Transitional form is meant to help deal with the transition of legacy documents, it was decided to make best efforts to provide compatibility with ECMA376-1 in the Transitional form of OOXML, so that existing applications worked properly. This involved clarifying or reintroducing, depending on your point of view, the use of serial dates for SpreadsheetML cell values.

Since the Strict form is the ideal form of the specification (ISO8601 dates only etc), where applications should strive to end up over time, it was decided to change the namespace, so that applications designed for ECMA376-1 would not be able to read them, avoiding data loss issues. In the absence of an existing versioning system, this was the only way to prevent existing applications from processing future version files that would likely create compatibility issues.

In addition, some members of Working Group 4 are determined to consider the implementation details of ISO8601 dates in spreadsheets, and wider, possibly using a subsetting approach like that found in XML Schema.

There certainly needs to be definition of which forms of ISO 8601 elements should be used, for example, possibly specifying “Complete Representation in Extended Format” should be used for dates and times, with separators explicitly defined and so on. Other considerations might be the expansion of the range of valid dates, less than zero and greater than 9999. ISO 8601 allows for a fair degree of ambiguity, so honing down the allowable forms would make implementers’ lives much easier.

There are also a wealth of other aspects of ISO8601 that would need to be excluded, such as recurring time intervals.

In the final analysis, the venerable Leap Year bug, now, somewhat strangely, elevated to accepted behaviour, is far less dangerous than the silent data loss problem that not allowing serial dates in spreadsheet cells could be.

A leap back

This is an interesting post, but there are a few issues that I need to address here:

“If you guessed “Microsoft”, you may advance to the head of the class.”

Alas Rob, it was Lotus that thrust this onto the world when they were the dominant spreadsheet and the minnow Excel had to play ball!

“The “legacy reasons” argument is entirely bogus. Microsoft could have easily have defined the XML format to require correct dates and managed the compatibility issues when loading/saving files in Excel. A file format is not required to be identical to an application’s internal representation.”

That may well be true, but I would imagine that would cause a large technical burden when managing backward compatibility with fixes such as the Compatibility Pack, as well as for the tens of thousands of developers reading and writing BIFF8 (the older Excel native binary format) who likely consumed, processed and exported serial dates.

Spreadsheets historically did not have date engines that could deal natively with ISO8601 dates and I doubt any do now. They could, of course parse them in and out, but it is not a trivial amount of work to put in the plumbing and why take the performance hit. Serial dates are great for date diffing and grouping, which is one of the most common operations – i.e how old is this debt, what transactions are in this quarter etc.

In addition, this argument cuts both ways, applications could convert serial dates into ISO 8601 dates if they so wished. Anyway, as of today, we have to clean up the mess as best we can.

Allowing serial dates in OOXML also makes it easier to interoperate with the forthcoming OpenFormula specification, which reasonably eschews ISO8601 dates in favour of serial dates and datetimes as input. BTW OpenFormula looks excellent and I must commend the work of Dave Wheeler and the rest of the OpenFormula SC.

As per the latest OpenFormula draft of May 9, 2009:

“A Date is a subtype of number; the number is the number of days from a particular date called the epoch. Thus, a date when presented as a general-purpose number is also called a serial number.” …

“A DateTime is also a subtype of number, and for purposes of formulas it is simply the date plus the time of day.”

I do hope Mr Bollow is pursuing the OpenFormula SC with the same vigour for their anti-ISO8601 activities, maybe we can convince him together!

The Apache POI team is doing an amazing job at making Microsoft Office file formats more accessible

The Apache POI team is doing an amazing job at making Microsoft Office file formats more accessible to the open source Java world. One of the projects that benefits from their work is Apache Tika that uses POI to extract text content and metadata from all sorts of Office documents.

However, there’s one problem with POI that I’d like to see fixed: It’s too big.

More specifically, the ooxml-schemas jar used by POI for the pre-generated XMLBeans bindings for the Office Open XML schemas is taking up over 50% of the 25MB size of the current Tika application. The pie chart below illustrates the relative sizes of the different parser library dependencies of Tika:

Both PDF and the Microsoft Office formats are pretty big and complex, so one can expect the relevant parser libraries to be large. But the 14MB size of the ooxml-schemas jar seems excessive, especially since the standard OOXML schema package from which the ooxml-schemas jar is built is only 220KB in size.

Does anyone have good ideas on how to best trim down this OOXML dependency?

Florian Schiessl: LiMux & WollMux: Free Software in Munich

“O pessimista queixa-se do vento, o optimista espera que mude, o realista ajusta as velas” – William Ward

Depois de um intervalo, foi a vez de Pascal Lauria da Scalix fazer a questão “Is there a real alternative to ms-exchange?”

OpenChange,SAMBA e KDE prontos a substituir ms-exchange

As criticas andaram à volta da Interoperabilidade ou ausência dela, das muitas palavras e poucas acções da microsoft nesse sentido, do porquê da RH achar que o ms-novell-mono é um perigo, uma vez que só é coberto pelo acordo ms-novell e toda a restante comunidade fica a um passo de ser processada;

i4i LP is only targetting Microsoft at this point, but they also clearly state that the ODF 1.2 specification violates their patent. It would be a shame is this got in the way of the innovation coming out of the OpenOffice.org project. Even Microsoft is hopping on board to support ODF in their next service pack of Office 2007. Believe it or not, I disagree with this law suit; their narrow focus of Microsoft makes this seem personal against Microsoft and not about the general concept. It also took them 2 years to find this? I hope a victory can be scored for freedom of innovation here.

Microsoft on taas hädas. Firma kontoritarkvara Office 2007 poolt kasutatud XML põhine vorming Office Open XML (faililaiendiga docx) pidavat kasutama Torontos registreeritud firma i4i 1998. aastal väljastatud patenti, mis käsitleb “dokumendi sisu ja arhitektuuri eraldi muutmist”. Ettevõte i4i on Redmonti hiiu kohtusse kaevanud ja Teksase föderaalkohus otsustas mais, et firma on tõepoolest patenti rikkunud ja on kohustatud maksma 200 miljonit dollarit õiguste omandamiseks. Juristide lahingud aga jätkuvad, Microsofti on kohustatud veelgi enam maksma ja nüüd otsustati suisa firmal keelata patenti rikkuva toote (Microsoft Office 2007) müük kuni summade tasumiseni ning kohtuasjade lõpetamiseni. Firma jäi haledalt vahele kohtus just tänu ekirjavahetusele, millest selgus, et patentide rikkumine polnud juhuslik tööõnnetus vaid teadlik samm – Microsofti töötajad olid patentidest teadlikud ja lihtsalt otsustasid neid ignoreerida.

Microsoft-hater says:

The stuff that Google are doing is exactly the sort of thing Microsoft will be doing with Bing. Tracking user habits, gaining data, using it for targeted adverts and such. Don’t for a second think that Microsoft’s intentions are pure. They’re a business. They will be just as cut-throat in the search business as Google are.

Microsoft only sells software, eh?

So when Microsoft modified Windows 3.1 to crash and burn on DR-DOS, it was just selling software, was it?

And when Microsoft made OEMs buy licences for every processor they shipped to discourage them from installing rival operating systems in the late eighties, it was just selling software.

And when Microsoft priced IBM out of the game to kill off OS/2, it was just selling software was it?

And when Intel wanted to make Native Signal Processing chips to play rich media on any operating system and Microsoft threatened to make Windows not work on Intel chips, that was just selling software, eh?

And when Microsoft withheld crucial APIs to make Wordperfect crash and burn on Windows, and then disallowed OEMs from pre-installing it on new computers, it was just selling software, I guess.

Or how about when they offered WISE, a tool to allow programmes written for Windows APIs to run on Unix and Apple computers, and then they extended the API without telling anyone, making sure that the programs people wrote would crash on Unix and Apple machines. I guess that was just selling software too, even when Bill Gates said Unix and Apple users were “fucked”.

Or perhaps that time when Microsoft made Internet Explorer a central feature of its operating system, and made Apple stop installing Netscape by threatening to stop selling them Microsoft Office. Yeah, selling software. Gotcha.

And then of course Microsoft went ahead and completely fucked up the web with shitty css and shittier javascript and ActiveX, guaranteeing that the internet looked completely shit in anything other than Internet Explorer running on Windows. Yeah, that was just selling software, too, I guess.

Or what about when Microsoft hijacked Java and tried to make it into some proprietary development platform for Windows, full of Windows-specific code that destroyed the interoperable nature of Sun Microsystem’s original Java. Yup, selling software. Nice.

What about when Microsoft extended their server technology so that only Windows terminals were usable with Windows servers? And then once they’d killed off the competition, they didn’t release another Server edition for five years. Yeah, that’s just selling software. Cool.

How about when Ed Curry, security specialist, was hired to test the security of the Windows operating system for the NSA, and he found it was full of security holes? Perhaps you don’t remember, but Microsoft hounded him, destroyed his reputation, forced him out of a job, and engaged in lengthy legal battles against him to further ruin his claims, which were eventually proven to be completely legitimate. Yeah, he died of a stroke brought on by stress, dontcha know. Selling software, yup.

How about the way they change their document specifications for every single fucking version of Office they release, forcing people to upgrade eventually. I suppose that’s selling software too.

How about the way they didn’t upgrade their shitty operating system for seven fucking years and then gave us Vista, which, among others things, deliberately removed the ability for executables to be run from rival filesystems, screwing up a whole load of people’s back-ups? Considering they’re suing people for using their filesystems now, is that just selling software? Is it really?

What about the FUD campaign that persists to this day about the number of patents the Linux operating system infringes upon. What is it, anyway? 100? 200? I guess that’s just selling software too.

How about when Microsoft bullied, bribed and co-erced the ISO into accepting the OOXML standard, which was a flaming pile of shit that not even they themselves have fully implemented? Is that just selling software?

How about the ODF support in Office SP2 that completely fucks up your documents? Is that just selling software? Considering Microsoft funded the development of the CleverAge plugin, which was given a BSD Licence, and which has zero problems with ODF files in Office, it makes you wonder. They funded it, the code is BSD, so they can just copy and paste it into Office. They have the ability to interoperate with ODF as good as anyone. They haven’t. Why not? Ah, they’re just selling software, of course.

How about the way Microsoft are still gimping the internet with IE8, forcing people to write ugly, ugly hacks to get their sites to work properly. How about Silverlight, which only works in Windows? How about Apple and Linux users and their Moonlight — a shitty rip-off gimped version of Silverlight. Oh whoopee, attempting to make the web bearable only when it is viewed from a Windows machine.

Microsoft have lied, cheated, bullied, bribed and scammed their way to being at the top of the pack. And when they went unrivalled, they harmed consumers, harmed businesses, harmed choice, harmed interoperability, and generally made a balls-up of everything. And they’re still fucking doing it. If you honestly believe that Microsoft are somehow worthier than Google, you really are an ignorant twat.

Let me begin by saying that I consider myself fairly objective and largely impartial when it comes to choosing hardware and software. I recognize that Microsoft, Apple, IBM, HP, Dell, and many others all have their specific strengths and are better suited for particular tasks. I own a behemoth of a quad-core PC running Vista 64-bit with WinXP and Ubuntu VMs. I own a MacBook that dual-boots OS X 10.5 and Ubuntu. Each machine, OS, and VM has its purpose.

That said, Microsoft holds the dubious honor of of being the company I have always been most at odds with.

Their products I don’t have much problem with (yes, Windows and its “it probably doesn’t work correctly, but we have a button for every task under the sun” approach is easy to rag on); it’s the business philosophy and subsequent corporate culture that grinds my gears.

Since its inception, Microsoft has thrived on stifling competition. Only after over a decade of forced browser bundling has the EU stood up to Microsoft and not only demanded IE8 uninstall functionality, but they are also pressing Microsoft to include multiple browsers in Windows 7.

Microsoft bullies, intimidates, and – as seen in the OOXML debacle with ISO – bribes to get its way. It has long been regarded as the antithesis to the Open Source movement, leveraging its market share monopoly and the stereotypical demographic of its users to spread misinformation and essentially lock their user base into its operating system through fear.

Hmm. That sounds familiar.

To say nothing of how Microsoft launched propaganda campaigns against Open Source in general (“you can see the code, that means it’s insecure“…any tech person worth his or her salt knows that SECURITY THROUGH OBSCURITY is no security at all. Exhibit A: Windows!), its latest attempt is to woo people over to the latest rendition of its vaunted Internet Exploderrer web browser by “comparing” it to the latest releases of the competing browsers.

This blog on zdnet does an excellent job of highlighting just how little in the way of facts there are in this Get-The-Propaganda campaign. True that Microsoft has a veritable Grand Canyon to dig itself out of after so many years of subjecting developers worldwide to the bubonic plague of browsers that was IE6 (seriously, an amputation of the arms so as to have prevented web development for four years would have been an improvement over this abomination), but spreading blatant misinformation to its user base (a disappointing majority of which, sadly, is easily convinced by the fear-mongering rhetoric) is pure and simple corporate manipulation.

At best, IE8 finally brings Internet Explorer up to par with the standards, which is where competing browsers like Opera and Firefox have been sitting comfortably for the last three years. But the points Microsoft awards itself for Security, Privacy, Ease of Use, Reliability (SPORFLE), Compatibility (HOW ABOUT ALL THOSE SITES OPTIMIZED FOR IE6), and Manageability are truly laughable. Opera and Firefox have been on the leading edge of those points since Microsoft was still touting its abomidable IE6, and the moment Chrome hit the scene it was already light-years ahead of IE7.

And now Microsoft is bitching that IBM is behaving in an anticompetitive fashion with regards to cloud computing.

Sorry Microsoft. In the last decade as you’ve essentially laughed and joked at the folly of IBM staying in the mainframe business, you neglected to see that IBM successfully positioned itself for the transition to cloud computing, leaving you in the dust. Don’t make me call the wambulance.

By the way, I am thoroughly enjoying my tenure at IBM this summer. Freaking kickass.

How Steve Ballmer (and Colleagues)

SteveB went on the road to see the top weeklies, industry analysts and business press this week to give our systems strategy. The meetings included demos of Windows 3.1 (pen and multimedia included), Windows NT, OS/2 2.0 including a performance comparison to Windows and a “bad app” that corrupted other applications and crashed the system. It was a very valuable trip and needs to be repeated by other MS executives throughout the next month so we hit all the publications and analysts.

4. The demos of OS/2 were excellent. Crashing the system had the intended effect–to FUD OS/2 2.0. People paid attention to this demo and were often surprised to our favor.

One of the more questionable tactics that Microsoft has implemented in Vista is to automatically overwrite any existing MBR during the installation process without asking if you mind or giving you an option to back up.

Microsoft says that the Windows installation system can’t intelligently interrogate an existing non-MS MBR, although such features are quite common in the install routine for other OSes.

MS on Trial One of the claims by Caldera that Microsoft wanted dismissed concerned intentional incompatibilities between Windows and DR-DOS. David Cole and Phil Barrett exchanged emails on 30 September 1991: “ “It’s pretty clear we need to make sure Windows 3.1 only runs on top of MS DOS or an OEM version of it,” and “The approach we will take is to detect dr 6 and refuse to load.

As aldrabices e a lata destes senhores não se ficam por aqui, estes senhores tiveram a audácia de responder a um MPE que não lhe podiam facultar a informação porque “Divulging that information may mine the protection of commercial interests of Microsoft, since those contracts establish terms and conditions that are specific and privileged for the EU Institutions”.

Groklaw – How to Get Your Platform Accepted as a Standard – Microsoft Style

Our mission is to establish Microsoft’s platforms as the de facto standards throughout the computer industry…. Working behind the scenes to orchestrate “independent” praise of our technology, and damnation of the enemy’s, is a key evangelism function during the Slog.
“Independent” analyst’s report should be issued, praising your technology and damning the competitors (or ignoring them).
“Independent” consultants should write columns and articles, give conference presentations and moderate stacked panels, all on our behalf (and setting them up as experts in the new technology, available for just $200/hour). “Independent” academic sources should be cultivated and quoted (and research money granted). “Independent” courseware providers should start profiting from their early involvement in our technology. Every possible source of leverage should be sought and turned to our advantage.

I have mentioned before the “stacked panel”. Panel discussions naturally favor alliances of relatively weak partners – our usual opposition. For example, an “unbiased” panel on OLE vs. OpenDoc would contain representatives of the backers of OLE (Microsoft) and the backers of OpenDoc (Apple, IBM, Novell, WordPerfect, OMG, etc.). Thus we find ourselves outnumbered in almost every “naturally occurring” panel debate.

Linux will be less expensive than Windows because StarOffice/OpenOffice.org can be used instead of Microsoft Office.

Linux is free.

There are no forced upgrades.

Linux will require significantly less labor to manage.

Linux will have a lower TCO than Windows because of available management tools.

Applications will be inexpensive or free.

Hardware can be kept longer if Linux is used, or older hardware can be used.

Skills are transferable.

A Wikipedia tem uma página relativa à Adopção e Uso de Software Livre dividida em diversos tópicos, “Linux adoption is new use of the Linux operating system by homes, organizations, companies, and governments, while Linux migration refers to the change from using other operating systems to using Linux.”

Extremadura, Spain’s poorest region, has been a supporter of open source software for some time. In 2002, it migrated 70,000 desktops and 400 servers in schools across the region onto a customised version of gnuLinEx Debian, saving an estimated €18m.

Coreboot e flashrom o bios e as ferramentas livres

Flashrom – coreboot
Usage

$ flashrom

Read the current BIOS image into a file:

$ flashrom -r backup.bin

Depening on the chip driver, you may have to erase the chip before writing:

$ flashrom -E

Write a BIOS image (proprietary or coreboot) on the ROM chip:

$ flashrom -wv newbios.bin

$ sudo dmidecode |grep -i bios
SMBIOS 2.3 present.
BIOS Information
                BIOS is upgradeable
                BIOS shadowing is allowed
                BIOS ROM is socketed
                BIOS boot specification is supported
BIOS Language Information

micro$oft demora 7 anos a corrigir falha

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-068 – Important: Vulnerability in SMB Could Allow Remote Code Execution (957097)

This security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in Microsoft Server Message Block (SMB) Protocol. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution on affected systems. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

This security update is rated Important for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, and Moderate for all supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.

Microsoft is criticizing OOXMLs supposed incompleteness.

Microsoft chooses to attack the messenger and ODF, going so far as to call for Rob Weir to step down as co-chair of the ODF Technical Committee.

You can read more about his and Microsofts ongoing efforts to delegitimate the OOXML standard on groklaw.net

Groklaw cite a former strategy paper of Microsoft which seems to be a guide for Microsoft

Most dramatically, Office 2007 SP2 adds full support for Office’s archrival OpenDocument formats, as well as built-in capabilities for publishing documents to Adobe’s PDF and Microsoft’s own XPS formats.
