This is an article that I have written for print publication. Any feedback would be appreciated.

2009 has been a strange year for carriers providing last mile DSL access. Back in January in the midst of the recession there were worrying times being forecast for carriers as they struggled to get to grips with the financial downturn. With networks struggling to plug widening deficits, previously planned network expansion was put to one side, as capital was shunted to other areas seen as more important to stopping the rot.

At the turn of the year, there were 4 main wholesale DSL carriers: BT Wholesale, Cable and Wireless, the Carphone Warehouse Group and Tiscali. Due to the recession, BT Wholesale were stalling with the roll out of 21CN, Cable and Wireless were just re-entering the channel after a strategic exit only a few years back, Tiscali were involved in a very public tug-of-war between Sky, Vodafone and the Carphone Warehouse Group whilst the latter themselves had only just entered the wholesale market via their wholly owned subsidiary Opal Telecom. As the year progressed and we started to move towards a brighter financial climate, the industry took a marked turn for the better. Many people debate about the exact period when we started to look more optimistically at the future. However I believe that when Brown put the ball in the court of the Telco’s by stating that the infrastructure behind Digital Britain would spur growth in the economy, there was a paradigm shift, as the masses adopted what we had already realised; that telecommunications was a fundamental component to the kick-start of the British economy.

Throughout the course of the year, the broadband landscape has changed considerably. The main difference being the acquisition of Tiscali into the Carphone Warehouse group and their subsequent ambitious plans for 2010. Whether they will demonstrate the traditional pains of large scale acquisition traditionally felt by other large carriers such as Tiscali and C&W is yet to be seen. BT Wholesale has also started to gain traction with 21CN and in particular their WMBC offering. Cable and Wireless can also pat themselves on the back as having a fairly successful year, as they managed to win the Tesco contract, whilst deploying their much heralded MSP platform. However one of the big changes to the market has been the introduction of BE into the wholesale arena.

BE have always had a very compelling consumer offering; being the first to market with Annex M ADSL2+, whilst having one of the largest coverage areas of the tier 1 DSL networks. With a topology designed to underpin high bandwidth usage, they were setup from the onset to provide ADSL2+ to their subscribers. BE have entered in a very timely fashion. One of the key topics of the year has been the increased financial burden of bandwidth costs on service providers due to applications such as iPlayer and Pirate Bay. This has led to in depth debates including key industry and government personnel about how best to manage the use of bandwidth intensive applications. Solutions such as bandwidth caps, application charges and even application restrictions were mooted. Due to their mesh dark fibre-based VPLS core, BE can legitimately claim to provide solutions future-scaled to support the continued rise in bandwidth by end users. Also with a commercial model that alleviates central based usage charges, they’ve provided a low cost-of-entry into the ADSL2+ market for channel partners.

As we move into 2010, the wholesale broadband market is much changed from that of 12months prior. Both Carphone Warehouse and 21CN have ambitious growth targets planned for 2010. The latter introducing wholesale Ethernet-in-the-first-mile and fibre-to-the-cabinet trials. Many people have stated that the window of opportunity for new wholesale partners is fast closing due to this. However in my position, the consolidation in the industry has reached a natural plateau, with all the main DSL carriers now proving to be more mature in systems interface, product portfolio and commercial model used. Even BE as the new player can be seen to have an edge in some aspects of their proposition. By using ISAMs (Intelligent Service Access Managers) at the exchange with the capability of terminating Ethernet and seamlessly training the DSL to work at its optimum performance (known as seamless rate adaption) they have made the step to solidify their position as a force in the market both now and for the future. By also providing unparalleled visibility and control of their ISAMs to all service providers, they have allowed tecchies to fault find, diagnose and alleviate traditional 3rd line issues, which in turn has led to a vast reduction in the number of support tickets raised with them.

Even though this has been in the market for roughly 6months, already the features are proving compelling, even as compliment to a 21CN novation plan. With products such as bonded DSL and symmetrical DSL soon to be available from the port, they’ve positioned themselves as a prominent player in the next generation access sphere. Add into the mix backhaul capacity capable of supporting their lofty ambitions and the capital of their more illustrious parents, it’s no wonder BE are proving to be more than just an interesting alternative in the wholesale broadband market.

Meinung:
Das Buch habe ich vor fünf Jahren gekauft, als es als Taschenbuch erschienen ist. Es hat ja viel Vorschusslorbeeren erhalten und ich muss sagen, es ist noch nicht einmal so schlecht geschrieben. Es erinnert einem stark an die „Unendliche Geschichte“ mit seinen Fabelwesen und dem „Erwählten“. Aber trotzdem hat die Geschichte seinen eigenen Charakter, da drei auf die Reise geschickt werden und sie zusammen, die Prophezeiung erfüllen müssen, obwohl sie Gegnerinnen sind. Die Geschichte erzählt von Hoffnung und Zusammenhalt. Ein schöner Fantasy-Roman für zwischendurch.

Economy

·  Wholesale price of food items rose 14.55% for the week ended November 7 from a year earlier due to dearer cereals, dairy items as well as mutton and eggs.

However, wholesale prices of fuel-related products dipped 1.51% in the week under consideration, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Oil & Gas

· Cairn India and its joint venture partners have decided to take up 4 dimensional (4D) seismic survey of Ravva field in the Krishna-Godavari Basin to further explore oil and gas reserves.

· Liquefied gas importer, Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL), is keen to acquire up to 10 per cent stake in ONGC Petro-additions Ltd (OPaL), which is setting up a cracker complex in Gujarat.

OPaL is, a Rs 12,440-crore petrochemicals project, being set up by ONGC at Dahej in Gujarat.

Infrastructure

The Adani group-promoted Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone (MPSEZ) is all set to develop a non-LNG port at Hazira.

Hazira Port, which is a joint venture of Shell Gas BV and Total Gaz Electricite Holdings France, issued a letter of intent to the Adani group for developing the port in the booming southern Gujarat industrial belt.

Capital Goods

· State-run Bharat Heavy Electrical (BHEL) has set up a new transformer manufacturing facility at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.

This new facility would enable BHEL to produce an additional 12,000 MVA (mega volt ampere) of transformers per annum.

· Pollution control equipment maker Thermax bagged an order worth Rs 477.77 crore from an Orissa-based company for construction of a captive power plant.

Aviation

· The Vijay Mallya-led Kingfisher Airlines led the chart of the loss-making carriers by reporting a massive Rs 1,602 crore in losses in 2008-09, followed by Jet Airways with a loss of Rs 1,032 crore.

Oil Drilling

· Jindal Drilling & Industries has bagged an order worth Rs 635 crore from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for hiring a drilling unit for five years.

Metal

· Tata Steel, the world’s sixth largest steel maker, is raising its annual iron ore production by 55 per cent to 17 million tonnes in India over the next two years.

The expansion is expected to cost about Rs 1,100 crore.

Information Technology

·  Satyam Computer Services (rebranded Mahindra Satyam) has received legal notices from 37 companies claiming a refund of $265 million (approximately Rs 1,230 crore), allegedly given as temporary advance.

Automobile

· Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s largest manufacturer of sports utility vehicles, is believed to be in advanced talks with the Tamil Nadu government for establishing an integrated auto facility in the state.

Forging

·  The Kalyani Group’s flagship company Bharat Forge is planning to make a big foray into the power sector with an investment of up to Rs 50,000 crore and a targeted generation capacity of up to 10,000 Mw, over the next 10 years.

Saturday was the annual Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary “Thanksgiving For the Turkeys”. It’s a fun event, very casual, a vegan pot-luck event that draws around 300 people (going by last year’s numbers) from near and far. The food is really an amazing thing. Tables and tables of incredible variety and deliciousness…and all vegan…

I got there at an absurdly early hour for a Saturday, but as with anything at the sanctuary, there are huge benefits to early hours and gross tasks. One of our tasks was to move a bunch of pumpkins off a trailer so the trailer could be used for something else. A few pigs noticed us, and gathered along the fence, hoping for pumpkins; naturally we couldn’t disappoint them, so we tossed some small pumpkins over the fence for them. It is so cute the way they get so excited about pumpkins!

The crowd has grown every year, and though I don’t know the numbers from this year, last year there were about 300 people despite the bitter cold temperatures! This year the weather was gorgeous – sunny and pleasant. It will be interesting to see what the numbers were. On one hand, if there were more, that’s great! On the other hand, if there were 300 again, it sort of would point to how determined people were last year to celebrate the lives of the turkeys, weather be damned!

Tons of people wandered far out into the cow/horse/mule pasture to say hello to the cows lounging in the sun on the hillside. We don’t pick up cow pies all the way out there, so they were clearly determined people!

The event’s official start time is 12pm, and we give everyone an hour to get there and fill up the food tables before Terry gives her talk about the turkeys. She tells the story of each, and thanks everyone for coming and celebrating their lives.

Then we put out the tables we’ve prepared for the turkeys. Of course the turkeys and the chickens know what’s coming, and get very excited. Some of the chickens get right up and start eating from the tables as we’re preparing them, which always makes me laugh! Edward was unknowingly part of a family portrait as he snagged some goodies from the table.

Opal sat contentedly while many people showered her with love and offered her handfuls from the feast of grapes and bread and melon and lettuce and corn and apples that made up the turkey’s feast. Little kids would crouch down next to her, making them almost the same size, and just sit with their hand resting on her back.

At some point, Izzy and Morty were let out of their stall in the pig barn so they could come join us near the chicken barn. They had such a great time. Izzy, who still insists on being bottle fed and won’t touch the baby pig pellets, gobbled up the turkey’s food. Morty also, of course, but he’s already weaned, so that was expected of him! Amazing that they are the same exact age sometimes! The crowds didn’t bother the boys at all – they loved it! They’d wander among all the people, getting as much food and attention as they wanted. Several people learned the trick of getting Morty to roll over for belly rubs, though he was too busy until the later part of the event to be interested.

Someone remarked to me that they were like supermodels or famous actors, the way they were followed around all day long by people with cameras! It made me laugh, because it was so true! And Izzy and Morty don’t have a clue that most pigs’ lives are so different.

So here’s the video for the week, a long one at almost 4 minutes. It starts out in their stall in the pig barn, and then is mostly them running around eating, getting lots of attention, and being followed around by people with cameras, a segment of Izzy doing his favorite thing (rooting), and ending with (sorry!) me telling a mom and her son that they aren’t limited to visiting on event days…I wish I knew how to edit sound, other than just adding music! I feel lucky that I was able to get any video at all, as my little Flip froze up very early in the day, and I thought it was a lost cause. I’m so glad I was able to restart it, because there were some very cute moments.

Lots of people stayed to help clean up, which was absolutely lovely. We were finished with everything that could be done that day even before the sun set – usually we’re working into the dark until Dave finally tells us to leave it for them to work on the next day.
