Last weekend marked several important days here at TYO: Universal Children’s Day, our Open Day, and the passage of the midway mark for our fall internship program.

As I was surrounded by dozens of kids clamoring to have their faces painted as Spider-man, Batman, hearts, moons, stars, flowers, butterflies (a good Arabic lesson for me that day!), I found a moment to reflect on the past month and a half here in Nablus.

I have been trying to teach my students here at TYO as much as they teach me. Every day with them is a new learning experience, as a teacher, as a foreigner and as a person. I hope that I am doing my best, and that my students like me. They keep coming back, so hopefully that is a good sign.

I crafted a nine-week schedule for my drama class at the beginning of this semester, and it has absolutely flown out the window. Every lesson that I plan for them, assuming that it will take at least a week (two classes), has been consumed by them in just one class! Even when I think that my English explanation cannot be properly translated into Arabic and grasped by my students, they are always two steps ahead of me and ready to go. My goal is to challenge, entertain and inform them at least as much as they do so for me.

In the past few weeks my class has covered many of the basics of the mechanics of theater, including costumes, sets and scripts. For the sets, we painted a backdrop and made free standing trees, as well as cut out clouds, a moon and a sun to hang in the classroom. On costume day, the students used their creativity to design costumes representing characters (bee, tiger, police man, etc), and then performed in front of the class to see if their fellow students could guess their character. On script day, the students learned the basic format of scripts and turned a children’s story into a scene to perform for their classmates.

Considering how quickly my boys and girls are moving through my lesson plans, I hope that we will be able to put together everything we have learned to put on a production for the rest of TYO!

“The best things about doing my masters were that the classes were small, the students really wanted to be there,  and  that everybody was passionate about the subject. The hardest part was figuring out how to get funding for the course. In the end I took out some loans and worked part time… When choosing a course,  look at who is producing research in the partifucular subject area you are interested in and find out which universities they are based at. ” (Recent Queen Mary MA Graduate).

Researching courses and attending open days is an inmportant part of finding out whether a course is right for you.  For example, ask about the employment rate of students who graduate from their course, find out whether there is any employer input in the course delivery, and enquire how many students are successful in gaining external funding. The University of London Postgraduate Open Evening is on Thursday this week at Senate House.

This design belongs to Musa Worklab. It is the first time i’ve heard his name. I found that he is from Lisbon, Portugal. Also this work is designed for Jewelry Shop Invitation. I really enjoy it because it readable and not stereotype. The other thing i like is the balance of negative and positive spaces. It sounds very nice and elegant to eyes.

Domenica 29 novembre, dalle 10.00 alle 19.00, presso la Palestra di Arrampicata del CAI di Manerbio si terrà una giornata di apertura straordinaria.

Sarà possibile:

– provare ad arrampicare in una struttura appositamente attrezzata
– assistere a dimostrazioni di arrampicata, bouldering, piolet traction
– vedere e conoscere le attrezzature ed i materiali necessari per l’arrampicata

Sono previsti i seguenti approfondimenti:

– ore 15.00: tecniche di progressione in ferrata
– ore 16.00: materiali ed attrezzature per l’arrampicata
– ore 17.00: tecniche di progressione su roccia

Il muro di arrampicata è all’interno della palestra comunale di Manerbio che si trova in piazza Aldo Moro, nel complesso sportivo che ospita anche la piscina ed i campi da tennis.

Manerbio è facilmente raggiungibile da Brescia con l’autostrada A21 (uscita Manerbio) o con la strada provinciale SP-BS45bis (ex Statale 45bis).
E’ inoltre raggiungibile dalle località della bassa bresciana tramite la superstrada Orzinuovi-Montichiari (strada provinciale SP-BS668).

Woodlice were fun to play with today. As it was biology (and an open day for the year 6’s), we did a practical and I was scooping them into little petri dishes. In a way it was kind of sadistic, but in another way it was fun to watch them run around in circles. The thing that got me though, was when she was telling us about the stress of woodlice. I shouldn’t laugh but I can’t see a woodlouse shouting “OH-MY-GOD!”

Spending lunchtime with Teresa, Esme, Caroline and Emily, I got an update on the gossip. I also learnt about how Teresa still denies the rumours that her boyfriend, Liam Cobb, cheated on her. Personally, I think it happened, but she says that it’s just because I was talking to Esme, who was cheated on by Liam. So it’s easy to understand why she thinks like that. Either way, I’m glad were beaming in the lunchtime sunshine.

This afternoon I ended up doing week 4 of the National Cipher Challenge 2009. As nerdy as that sounds, it actually really interests me and after spending a few hours on it, I felt rewarded after cracking it. From now on it’s only going to get harder – but it’s half way and our team, the cookie codebreakers, are still joint first.

Last, but certainly not least, was my phone call to Colin this evening. We chatted for an hour and a half, and could have rambled on for longer if the phone hadn’t cut out. I’m spending tomorrow after school and Saturday with him, before I jet off to sunny Spain. I’m going to miss him millions… because I love him millions, that’s life. There’s a thunderstorm outside as I blog and I wish he was here
