I think I got about 5 hours of sleep. I think my minimum is 3 that I can function on, so I’m pretty good.

It’s only 1:58 here and my open hose starts at 4. Did I mention today is my open house? It’s hot.

Guys. I’m really hot ( it’s 75 degrees) and I think there is a bee following me. I don’t like bees. Maybe it’s because of the flowers on my dress? They’re attracted to pretty colors right?

That’s it. It was nice. I made some money! Like, seriously, I made some MONEY! I’m happy. Way more than I expected.

So yeah, it was a good day. I’ve got some work that I need to get done. In real life I’m probably just going to watch Game of Thrones.

My birthday is tomorrow! I’ll be 18! Holy Crap. 94

Top 5- week ending 06/08- movie extras, open house, church space, and more

Here’s the top 5 for last week- as always, in no particular order.

1. Community Garden. We’re exploring the possibilities of placing a community garden on the south end of our property. This would provide fruits and vegetables for ourselves- and for the neighbors.

2. Open House. The first Open House of the summer happened Saturday. This is a “come and go” event where neighbors, volunteers, or others simply wanting to get a close-up look are welcome to drop by for a 2 hour window. We feed you, no strings attached. The next event is in August.

3. Call to prayer. This week, I was honored to participate in WDJC’s weekly (Wednesdays) “Call to Prayer” event- where listeners call in for prayer requests- and receive prayer right then. We were there with Deborah Bowles (who is helping launch The Grace Church) and Brandon Ball (the pastor of the new The Life Church).

4. Church space. We had an incredible meeting on Friday about meeting space for the Sunday worship services. We’ll share more next week. The short version is this: the space is incredible- and large. It has great parking. It’s located off a major street. The price is unbelievable!

5. Movie extras. Jonathan, Heath, David, and Julian rode their bikes to Crestwood this Tuesday, stayed up all night, and are now apparently extras in a biker seen of an upcoming Trace Adkins / Sean Astin film.

Please stop by & see what we’ve been collecting, have some refreshments, say hello. Our upcoming Open House will kick off LGBT Pride here in Cincinnati. From 12-2 on Saturday, June 22nd, our little reference library in the basement of Clifton United Methodist Church will be open (usually you need to make a request to visit).

Victoria, our summer intern Annabelle, and I would love to see you and answer any questions. If you’re a lesbian mother, she’d be interested in talking to you for her project for Women’s Studies at the University of Cincinnati. Also, we discovered we have lots of duplicate copies of some novels, so we’re GIVING BOOKS AWAY! Know that this is highly unusual for an archives. It is only because they are duplicates that we can do this. Our small space also demands it.

Graduation Open House

Max’s graduation and open house are now history! A lot of work went into making the open house a success. With a house full of company, 13 to be exact and eight of them being kids, you can imagine the work that needed to be done in preparation! I saw the Banford family get in gear! Each one had a job to do and it was done! I have a picture in my mind of Miller vacuuming the stairway! Maddie’s job was to empty the dishwasher, but not the knives, she informed us…

I was busy making a watermelon fruit basket. Maddie helped me a little with this big job!

We had a good time working together.

Christy went to pick up the cake.

The fruit basket was ready.

Maddie was still running around with her play clothes on. I said to her, “Maddie, you better change your clothes…we’re having a party! You’ll want to look nice!” She stopped and looked at me…I could see her little mind working. She ran upstairs and when she came down she was so pretty!

We were ready for the party to begin! Doesn’t Max look happy here? He’s a fine young man!

The boys, Alexander, Miller, Mason and Jason and Molly, the dog, were waiting patiently for the guests to arrive.

Here are the next door neighbor’s bringing in their gift…an ironing board that fits over a door and an iron so he can keep his clothes looking neat! The iron is a Black and Decker iron so it’s more manly! Christy had told them Max always wants his shirts ironed and he does it himself!

Near the end of the open house we asked Max to put on his cap and gown so we could take some family pictures with him. He graciously obliged!

The first picture here is his own family. Sean, Max, Miller, Megan, Christy, Maddie and Mason. A beautiful family.

Where Did My Time Go?

My dear readers,

Woah man! It’s been a lonnnnng day. Well, a long week really. I’m tired, and need to be up early for my graduation tomorrow, so this will be short.

I had my last day of school this past Tuesday. It hasn’t sunk in that I’m done with high school already. Maybe it was because I didn’t have any exams that last day like everyone else. Having 2 college classes, those ended weeks ago. With two AP classes, there were no exams in them after already having taken the AP exam. Then an independent study.

I had a cushy schedule.

I spent the last hours of my senior year watching as two male students reenacted the story of how my English teacher met my husband. It was a beautiful end to a beautiful year.

It still hasn’t sunk in that I’m done with high school.

The rest of the week has been spent finishing up loose ends. First, I had to write my speech for graduation. Since I’m class president, I get to speak about how great my class is in front of a billion people, when I really hate about 60% of them. (I’m good at lying). Cliche, cliche, advice, I’ll miss you all, blah blah blah. That’s my speech. I’m only just now getting nervous about it.

It hasn’t sunk in that I’m graduating tomorrow.

Then, I had to finish my online portfolio. Though I was done with school, I wasn’t done with homework. Somewhere, logic is sitting in a corner and crying. Therefore, I was scanning like a madmen to put all of my achievements and old papers required onto this online portfolio. (If my English teacher hadn’t given this to us 4 days before it was due, it would have been less of a problem). Because of this, while I was up in the wee hours of the morning, I had my first taste of coffee. (Straight up coffee that wasn’t encased within a mocha barrier). When I was still raring to go at 4am when I finished, I realized why people love coffee so much. I think it’s a beautiful relationship to begin before I head off to college.

It hasn’t sunk in that I’m going to college this fall.

We’re still finishing the yearbook. It involves putting in things over email and various sheets of paper. But we’re almost done.

It hasn’t sunk it that this is my last yearbook.

There has been 5 million open houses.

I went to 5 just today. I was gone from 1:30 to 7pm at open houses. We had a comprehensive schedule that allotted each person an hour of our time. Travis got 2 hours on the schedule. We told him he should be very honored. I also kept to my rules of making it a successful open house by having a piece of cake and a drink at all of them. (I’m retired from tennis, I can do what I want).

It’s still weird to be going to my friends’ open houses. I mean, the friends who are the same age as me.

It still hasn’t sunk in that mine is in 3 weeks.

It still hasn’t sunk in that I’m a high school graduate.

I don’t think it will sink in until after graduation. Until after my senior trip (which I still need to pack for) when I’m seeing some of my classmates for the last time. Until after my open house. Until I’ve moved into my dorm. Until I’m going to my first college class.

Maybe then it will sink in that I’m done with high school forever.

Open House with Petunia and Geocaching at the Prairie

I know, I know. Not but a month ago I posted a flagrant, public repentance for not posting timely updates. What can I say — once a sinner always a sinner.

I kid, of course; I have been without internet for sometime and figured that last week’s article could easily be posted the next time I covered a story, which was today.

In brief, last weekend I was assigned to cover the third annual Alachua Home Grown Open House where I met a little pig. I also learned quite a bit about slanted-rooftop gardens.

Here’s the the lede and a link to the article on the Gainesville Sun website:

Petunia crisscrossed the field, greeting visitors and rooting in the ground in between potted herbs and plants with her snout while giving the occasional snort.

The 10-week-old Hampshire-cross pig, when not focused on rooting for food, enjoyed the attention of those who petted her or let her sniff their legs.

Children, in particular, were drawn to the friendly pig, who is owned by Mae Whitehurst, a mother of a child involved in the local 4-H youth organization.

“I think she’s kind of the highlight of the (event),” said Whitehurst. “You know, how fun are plants to look at when you have a pig that comes up behind you?”

After finishing the open house article, I had to run to the nearby Starbucks so that I could submit it to my editor. The coffee was okay, but the Internet was super — better than what I had available at home, to be sure.

This week, armed with internet service, I covered the Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park’s Viva Florida 500 geocaching event on Saturday, a task I was undeniably excited about.

I’ve never been geocaching and only had an elementary understanding of what it was, but I remember first hearing about the concept in 2007 in an issue of Game Informer, which featured the use of geocaching games use in media marketing. It sounded like a real-life video game to me — puzzles and all. Of couse, it’s really just a global treasure hunting game that uses GPS-enabled devices in lieu of a map and compass (although in order to find some special types of geocaches one might need all three), but its pretty exciting nonetheless.

And it’s a great way to get people who are constantly engaged with their game consoles and computers (like me) to get out and get some exercise while playing a real-world game. After witnessing the event and listening to experienced geocachers, I can definitely say that I’m interested in checking it out myself.

The 13-member group was on the hunt.

Comprised of geocachers of varying ages and experience levels, the group was led down Lake Trail by Taj Allen, known as Tango to his fellow members in CYAO, a local geocaching group.

Once they reached the coordinates, the children in the group took off into the brush toward a heap of fallen, dead trees and fan palms.

They encircled the heap, careful to make sure they didn’t step on any small cacti, and entered through the backside of the heap.

After moving palm fronds, the children found it – a large plastic bear cub curled up in a ball. After some investigation, they discovered the cache, a plastic coffee container full of little trinkets that are referred to as swag.

After removing some beads and a plastic frog for his 7-year-old brother Keaton, Quinn, 8, replaced them with a horseshoe, which had a dog-tag tracker attached to it.

Notice the wooden paddle in the middle picture of the last row. It was inside the cabin of the BIG yellow amphibian.

It was a good, fun, uplifting ‘day’. The weather cooperated in the end. No rain. Some sun. Some wind, sometimes quite gusty; blew over a vendor tent. But I think everybody had a great time. Way more folks than I had expected given the ‘storm’ overnight. Good job. Well done.

Ray Burton at the Laconia Airport Open House today.

I have known Lisa since around 2000 (when she worked at the Gilford Library) and Don since about 2001 when I joined Laconia Rotary. That we were huge supporters of Lisa is no secret and we are very glad and proud to have Lisa as a State Rep. I am, as with Ray Burton, rather fond of Don. He has a good head on his shoulders and you can always rely on Don, as with Ray, to be reasonable irrespective of the politics. Suffice to say I had long chats with both of them individually and then together. It was good. It was a pleasure and an honor. Good people, both.

Just yesterday when I was volunteering at the State House I happened to be going past the Executive Councillors’ Office and inquired how Ray Burton was doing. I was assured that he was in fine fettle.

This morning, as soon as we got to the Laconia Airport Open House I spotted Ray with his distinctive ride. I, of course, went up and asked him how he was. He was GREAT. That is good news. He looks good. Said that he was feeling good, had lots of energy. This was 10 am in the morning. At 1pm he was going to a Polly’s Pancakes in Sugar Hill to celebrate them being in business for 75 years. At 2pm he had another meeting in Littleton. Just hearing his schedule made me tired.

He, as ever, being who he is, told Deanna to take a picture of us together. Though I have shook hands with him many times I think this is the ONLY picture I have with Ray. I like Ray. He is a great politician and a good man. IF we just had a dozen more politicians like Ray in Concord things would be so much better for the State.

Way to go Ray. So happy that you are doing well.

Yes, I am wearing my Granite State Ambassador (GSA) shirt and badge though this was not a GSA event. But we are allowed, even encouraged to show the colors when we volunteer in NH.

I’ve taken up watching Game of Thrones. I honestly don’t believe that it was a good idea. But I started so in sticking to it…

Already it’s a bit much with the knives. Freaking me out. It’s not as bad as Dexter though. The first time I tried Game of Thrones it was too much. Plus it’s sad. Psycho Chick said it only gets worse. This better not be another Misfits because I barely could handle that.

If you don’t know what I mean, I’m not telling you. You watch for yourself. Misery enjoys company? Yes. I suffer you suffer.

I think that’s what Psycho Chick was doing when she told me to watch this show.

Tomorrow is my open house and right now I’m with my nephew. Want to see?

Sorry I look so rough. That’s not me fishing. That’s me stating facts.

Been getting ready for the open house. It’s almost done. I think my mom has done a good job. This post is short.

Most Renters Plan to Buy, But Fear Lending Standards

Ninety percent of renters say they expect to buy a home in the future, but the majority are fearful of their ability to qualify for a mortgage at today’s stringent underwriting standards, according to a new survey conducted by Fannie Mae. In fact, 42 percent of those who intend to buy a home one day say they don’t think they’ll be able to do so for at least five years.

“Younger renters who prefer to own are much more likely than their older counterparts to say that they are renting mainly to make themselves financially ready to own,” according to the survey.

The majority of renters surveyed said that if they had trouble qualifying for a mortgage, they would take steps to improve their credit score or financial situation, or consider buying a less expensive home. Only a quarter of renters said that if they were denied a mortgage, they would stop pursuing a mortgage altogether.

The survey showed that renters believe home ownership is better than renting in terms of privacy, security, and for raising a family. Fifty-one percent of renters say that owning makes more sense than renting when comparing both the financial and lifestyle benefits, according to the survey.

“The strength of the economy, particularly job creation and real income growth, as well as the favorability of credit conditions should play significant roles in determining if and when many of these renters will see the fruit of their efforts to become home owners,” says Sarah Shahdad, analyst of Economic & Strategic Research at Fannie Mae.

Metro and Caltrans to host SR-2 Terminus Improvement Project Open House on Thursday, June 13

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) have collaborated with local communities to identify a solution that will help manage traffic flow, improve safety and enhance pedestrian mobility in the project area where the SR-2 terminus connects with Glendale Boulevard. The public is encouraged to attend the community meeting to learn about the latest developments on the SR-2 Terminus Improvement Project at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. Meeting details are below.
