As much as I love the burgeoning tech ed field and the opportunities it provides students to grow, learn and develop, there are a number of things that fright my night. So, in the spirit of the season, here are five things that keep my spine tingling and my soul caught in that nether world of ghoulish old practices and spooktacular innovation.

1. The forgotten password. Assuming a student is going to forget their login name and password is like assuming a Vampire is going to bite your neck. It’s inevitable, and when it happens, it’s going to suck. Thankfully, you can create a new Google account pretty much whenever you want. Open IDs can’t get on to more websites soon enough.

Forgetting your password? Now that sucks.

2. Dependence on Machines:

When machines get replaced by machines, what hope is there?

Remember in Battlestar Galactica when humans made machines and the machines rose up against their creators and nearly obliterated mankind? No? Well I do, and it wasn’t pretty. My (loose) point is this: the more you rely on a machine to get all your work done, the more problems could arise. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has had a hard drive fail or a paper wiped clean for inexplicable reasons. I love computers and gadgets and doo-dads, but if we’re totally reliant on them….goodbye Caprica.

3. If the pencil isn’t broke, why fix it? Most teachers I know embrace the push towards using technology in the classroom for creation and collaboration. There are, however, some who do not see the benefit of it and would rather stay wrapped up in “traditional” ways of teaching than work with a group of people on a given task, increasing that knowledge pool and producing a better product over all. If we taught (and students learned) in a completely isolated environment, then I guess that would be ok. But that’s doesn’t seem to be the realty of a 21st century learner. Or teacher. Or…duck.

Working together solves problems. Working alone traps you in a sarcophagus.

4. Have computer, have no Internet. More and more in class a home computer sans Internet is akin to my Jack-O-Lantern from this year existing as a pumpkin without its orange innards. Much of what teachers are asking kids to do are now web-based and for those kids without home Internet, or with spotty connections, the ability to complete assignments and experiences can be frustrating.

Oh Jack, how I miss you.

5. The Replicants. One of the more frustrating things for me when rolling out a shiny new lesson that requires tech integration is to have the whole process sputter and squashed by a lack of innovative ideas and creativity. Not because a student is incapable of being create mind you, but, well, “if it’s already posted somewhere else, why can’t I just copy and paste it on my Google doc/wiki/forum/blog/whatever?” Replicating someone else’s work so you can get done quicker so you can get on YouTube faster? Well that just drives me Batty.

Replicating in favor of creating drives a teacher Batty.

Open ID Explained
What Is Open ID?

Huoh.

When we first invited people to become Solvers on hypios, we were essentially asking them to create

When we first invited people to become Solvers on hypios, we were essentially asking them to create new online identities. We asked them to fill in personal details like their name, occupation, location, and interests. We gave them the option of adding a picture or avatar, and finally (politely) requested that they share their newly-created profiles with other Solvers by tweaking their privacy settings. Now, we’ve simplified things by adding a Facebook Connect button. You can join hypios using the Facebook profile you already have.

Having trouble keeping track of all your usernames and passwords?

It quickly gets annoying to have to fill out a new form with your name and hometown each time you want to join a site. Once you’re signed up, you have to remember which username and password combination you’ve used for each network. In theory, this protects your privacy. Social networking sites keep your data to themselves, in their own walled gardens, safeguarding your personal details. In practice, this can be frustrating. You may have befriended your colleagues on Facebook, but if you decide you want to contact them through Linked In instead, you all have to create separate Linked In profiles and reconnect through those pages. You also have to deal with the etiquette of different networks. As Patty Seybold notes in an Outside Innovation post, an executive who never checks his company email may reply instantly to casual messages sent via Facebook, moving business onto supposedly social platforms.

This poses an obvious problem for companies like hypios, whose platform is based on a social network of Solvers. According to a recent ReadWriteWeb post by Alex Korth, users’ most significant issues lay in having to sign up for multiple profiles, re-enter and synchronize personal data, and their inability to export this data (even though it was personal information). hypios’ success as a marketplace for solutions depends on our ability to broadcast problems to a wide network of Solvers. The more Solvers we can recruit, the better the chances that we can help Seekers find the solutions they need. If Solvers can join using existing profiles, they can also import the social networks they’ve built with these profiles.

How openID standards can make your identity portable

Fortunately, online identities are becoming more and more portable, thanks to open ID initiatives. OpenID standards allow you to create one account for several sites. The ID can come from an email account (on Google or AOL, for example), a social network profile (your Facebook or myspace account), or another single sign-on (SSO) provider. You sign in by giving your password to the ID provider, who then confirms your identity to a website or application. For example, if you want to use your Facebook account to log in to the hypios network, hypios will never see your password. Instead, Facebook checks your password and confirms your identity to hypios, keeping your account secure.

Some application providers have also become ID providers, namely Google and Facebook. Last December, both companies launched ‘Friend Connect’ features, which allow users to log in to different websites using previously-created identities. However, as blogger John McCrea pointed out in his post about the launches , Google’s connect feature is built on open-source technology, while Facebook’s uses its own proprietary sources. And while Facebook initially focused on integrating with major sites like Digg, Google promised to add a social component to any and every website by making it easy to cut-and-paste its code.

Who can you trust with your identity?

Of course, all of this depends on your trusting a provider with your personal information in the first place. There are privacy, security, and practical concerns:

One irate former Facebook user, Leif Harmsen, told a New York Times blogger that “Facebook does everything to make you more dependent,” such that “it is not ‘your’ Facebook profile. It is Facebook’s profile about you.” In fact, Facebook ended its Beacon program after users complained that purchases they’d made on partner sites were automatically posted as ’stories’ in their Facebook profiles.

Besides concerns over commercialization of personal information, there are security worries. Just as an OpenID provides users with access to multiple sites, it gives hackers the same freedom.

More practically, if an ID provider service goes down, users will be unable to sign on to any of the sites at which they use their IDs.

Why ‘open’ ID doesn’t mean ‘open to the whole Internet’

We think it’s important to remember that having an OpenID doesn’t mean that your profile becomes more open, though. (Even if Facebook is encouraging its users to make some elements of their profiles open to everyone on the Internet.) Though more and more websites will integrate social networks, ID providers will only reveal the details you’ve chosen to give out. It’s the same information, just displayed on more pages around the Internet.

As Alex Korth of ReadWriteWeb points out, however, ‘open’ IDs may eventually lead to interoperable IDs and a ‘web of identities’ much like the ‘web of data’ that will form the semantic web. Just as data will point to other data with URIs, social connections will point to each other through OpenIDs. Depending on how much information our friends share, a typical search query on the web of identities could poll social connections’ favorite books or vacation destinations by looking at purchase histories or status updates.

It could also help Solvers use each other as resources, whether by polling connections about the best new textbooks or soliciting advice on a scientific problem from like-minded people. At the very least, it could help Solvers find others who have worked on similar problems or have matching interests.

Given our interest in the semantic web, we think this could be a really exciting way to connect with people. No matter what ID provider you choose or how you use your online identity, we hope that openID integration will make it easier for you to become part of our network.

Disciplinemaatschappij

C’est de l’analyse marketing all the way.

What is next?

So…

Less than 16% of humanity do have internet connection. It is strange to speak about social media sit

Less than 16% of humanity do have internet connection. It is strange to speak about social media site. What social type do you mean? Nothing is not social. It is just a kind of autocongratulation or autopromotion. What’s happening? We are developing Open ID, compatilibity, permeability between social media plateforms because we are not able to talk to others cultures, to others people. Social medias sites need to talk each other because they have not found the way to conquer other lands. When more than 80% of the planet ignore what is facebook, twitter, gmail, we should really think the usefulness of these sites. Are they really social or just narcissistic?

How can we charm Bambara, Hutu, Zulu, Kalash, Bolowen, Pa Dong to use social media sites? Further to clichés, how can we create social contents? Do we need to review not the business model but the social model? What would be the place of roots? Do not you believe that arrongance is too much? Do Bambara, Hutu, Zulu, Kalash, Bolowen, Pa Dong they need the same google, ergonomy? What do you know about them? How were the ancient civilizations ways of communication?

Do not be too much socialists, we need money to make money. What do you think about rehabilitating indigenous values? That is not the real value?

I thought it was just the Letter T’s URL plus my WordPress password, but that doesn’t seem to be working. Please advise!

MySpace has announced a MySpaceID implementation, currently in limited testing on the new Yahoo! hom

MySpace has announced a MySpaceID implementation, currently in limited testing on the new Yahoo! homepage. The MySpace application is one of several new “Apps” Yahoo! recently began testing. It’ll enable users to check-in and keep up to date with the information and other people. Other social networks are also aggressive.

Social networks are now getting serious in the business. Recently, Facebook also introduced The Facebook Principles, which will guide the development of its social network service. Also, the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities aims to make clear Facebook’s and users’ commitments related to the service. These initiatives are being carried out to attract and retain users.

Similarly, AOL People Networks has launched Bebo in different European territories. It has also roped in emerging media brands AlloCiné, Clipfish, Telecom Italia owned Yalp!, Diagonal View and Preview Networks’ Filmtrailer to its Open Media Platform.

Others are offering high-end services that go beyond the conventional social networking scope. For instance, Friendster, a leading social network in Asia, has launched support for users in the Philippines and abroad to send and receive money on Friendster. Globe Telecom will partner Friendster for money transfer through its subsidiary G-Xchange (GXI) and their GCASH mobile commerce platform. Friendster also added support for Tagalog, a language in the Philippines.

The addition of new features has also become important for social networking companies becuase most social networks are struggling for survival in the absence of adequate ad support. According to research firm IDC, ads on social networking services have lower click-through rates than traditional online ads and they also lead to fewer purchases.

While offering new features, now MySpace social network has launched new functionality for MySpaceID, a product that allows any website to access the MySpace social graph, enabling any user to securely link their MySpace profile, friends, and activities with their favorite websites.

MySpaceID also launched developer access to MySpace user activity streams and a seamless authentication experience for sites across the web as well as a new developer workflow and MySpaceID SDKs.

With these offers, MySpace claims to be the first major social network to have the full “Open Stack” implemented where information is flowing to partner websites based on open Web standards.

MySpace now offers OpenID-support on every custom user URL. Previously announced functionality of MySpaceID includes finding MySpace friends on a partner site and linking user’s MySpace profile to the profile on a partner site.

I remember when I first heard about open ID about a year ago, on the Security Now Podcast (twit.tv/s

I remember when I first heard about open ID about a year ago, on the Security Now Podcast (twit.tv/sn). I was very excited about the idea of having only one password to manage, while still being able to sign up for all of these web 2.0 services. The huge barrier to entry for many of these websites, currently, is that you have reveal your e-mail address to a third party, who may or may not subscribe you for every porn, viagra and penis enlargment mailing list on the internet. Well I have enjoyed all of the porn over the years, the penis enlargment e-mails are annoying, and I already have a viagra supplier. One e-mail that I don’t mind getting is the Nigerian scam e-mails and fake stock tips. Those always amuse me.

I digress. For those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, and for some reason are still reading this, I will describe open ID (and hopefully not butcher it). Open ID is a way for you to confirm your identity on the internet. This keeps you from having to create a username and password for each individual website you visit. So an Openid world would work like this: you get onto the internet, and log into your Open ID provider. Then when you want create an account with an up and coming social network, like orkut, you give orkut your OpenID address, such as http://someopenidprovider.com/yourusername. That’s it. No Password, no email address. You may want to create a user name just to obfiscate your id a bit, but the beauty of it is that you don’t need to remember your user name. When you want to log into orkut later, you simply provide your open id credential again. Every time you create an account, your open id provider makes you confirm that it is you creating that account. Every time you want to log in, a similar message appears.

The chief critisism with this that there is one single point of failure for ALL of your websites. That is to say that if anyone ever gets access to your open id account, they can now log into all of your websites. I would contend for most people, this is already the case. How many websites do use the same username and password combo on? The number of websites that want you to create an account these days makes it very difficult to protect yourself by having different passwords for each website. This means that you already have a single point of failure. Log into any one of your websites, from a library computer that has a keylogger on it, and all of your websites are now comprimised. Open ID can at least protect you, by attaching a one time password to your account.

One time passwords come in many forms. Some of the more popular methods are RSA tokens, and SMS alerts. These protect you from having your password compromised by adding a second factor to your authentication. Factor 1: Something you know (user name and password). Factor 2: Something you have (an rsa token, randomly generating a number that only your Open ID provider know, or # sent to your cell phone that uses the same method. )

My point about Open Id is that it needs to come soon! It seem’s like many websites, including facebook.com are signing up to be an open ID provider. What we really need, is for websites to start accepting open ID. The sitution that we have right now is like a bunch of websites making keys, but none of them accepting those very same key.

This week, for some reason, I was compelled to try out a bunch of web 2.o services, that I’ve been hearing about for awhile. I’ve been giving my e-mail address out everywhere. Every time I type my e-mail address into a web form I cringe and think “How much spam am I going to get from this site?”

TheSaiko.com Twitter just “leaked” their “sign in w/ Twitter Connect Feature. Lik

TheSaiko.com

Twitter just “leaked” their “sign in w/ Twitter Connect Feature. Like other master login services (Facebook, MySpace and Open ID being the biggest and earliest), Twitter will now allow you to user your Twitter login to access other accounts you may have that are in no way tied to Twitter. This is major in the Techie and early adopter worlds.

Facebook has a leg-up on this, as there are hundreds of millions of people already actively using their platform every day. But, Twitter may have timed their introduction perfectly. Recently their brand has been all over the Internet and traditional media. The spot light is now on Twitter and they couldn’t be happier.

You may be asking yourself, “Why wouldn’t I just use Facebook to sign in, rather than Twitter?” That’s a good question. We’ve not found any reasons why we’d use Twitter over Facebook for login. It could turnout to be Coke vs. Pepsi with no clear winner.

What has techies buzzing is the fact that Twitter is an open environment where Facebook is closed like the door on a safe. That means that all Facebook applications operate only within Facebook. Twitter differs because all of it’s associated applications run outside of Twitter, but connect on the back-end. That’s huge. It ensures that Twitter remains simple.

At the end of the day, tech gurus feel that it is an “arms race” with the end goal being the control over the largest amount of users. So far Facebook is in the lead. Let’s wait and see if Twitter’s simplicity will beat them in the long run.
