New moon Sets Opening Day Record

When your outline is complete and you are ready to write your first draft, many writers make a common mistake at this point. They try to “get it right” the first time. They may work on a paragraph for hours, fine-tuning the words until they are perfect. Writers thus shut off their creativity by insisting on profession.

Remember, the first draft is a working draft. It should be written quickly without too much thought to elegant expressions or final order and paragraphing. Your object is to get the material on paper to flash out the structure of your outline. Let the words flow. Start wherever you can—in the middle, even near the end. The opening or introduction can be completed later. Any weaknesses in logic or gaps in information, any points that are out of place can be corrected in the final version.

As you write the first draft, keep your audience in mind. Doing so will help you stay focused on the purpose of your work. Keep writing until you have completed the first draft.

Amberella Gallery is pleased to present the Laser Mo Show, a fabrication of scripted works by artist Morgan Martinson.  Laser Mo Show is a study of contemporary processes and modes of fabrication as digital work is brought to a physical, sensual realm. Morgan Martinson works as an architect and artist, and this show represents a study in the discrepancies between drawing and object. She received her Master of Architecture from PennDesign in 2008 and is currently working in landscape architecture and planning. She is co-founder of via books and edited its first edition, via Occupation.

It is 28 November  2009, a day before the opening match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. I’m at the Kingspark Swimming pool across the street busy with the Westville sprints gala. Just finished taken photos for the day at 6:30 pm and went out to get some fresh air.

See the light outside, rush back inside, grab my D3, 24-70mm, 20mm and 10.4mm lenses. Ran to the outside pavilion to the top and took around thirty images with the three lenses for about 10 minutes. Normally stadium lights and ambient light balances out for only 10 minutes or so. So to get the right balance one must be quick and be at the right time at the right place.

Tomorrow at 3:30pm is the opening match between Amazulu and Maritzburg united. All the tickets are sold out which mean there will be more than  70 000  people in the stadium. I’m going to cover the game and looking forward to see the stadium from the inside for the first time. One of the 2010 World Cup Semi Finals will be hosted at the stadium. Hope i will have the priviledge to attend that match as well.

The title’s a line from a Friends episode which i really like. I miss the carefree days, when i could watch like 10 episodes a day on DVD. Now it seems like i’m going to be routinely happy in the day and a myriad of emotions at night.

That’s why i’ve been procrastinating for so long. My huge opening of this blog’s supposed to be like, really magnificent but i’m just finding it hard being coherent at night nowadays. So I’ll do it now. The Singaporean version of twilight(Edit: -.- this is referring to the time of the day).

The past few days were full of well wishers and fun with the gang. I really really missed playing Mahjong! But Cass wasn’t there so we had to do 3 player which i hate because i always finish my own wall first and i have to stretch to make the extra wall. And it just doesn’t feel right without all of us! But yeah, New Year’s Eve plans made, they shan’t escape now!

Wednesday was a day of Firsts for me.

I spent Thursday cleaning my room and i really really wanna show you all what i dug up because it’s so approriate for this Starting Anew thing:

It was some sort of workout tying these stacks of papers and books up with raffia and bringing them downstairs. But the whole accomplished thing was there. BUT i’m not even done with JC stuff. My Dad saw them and went, Oh My God! you studied so much ah?

Hahaha Highlight of this post is…. Yesterday!

It was soooo cool, i spent most of the day at the salon getting this done:

Pardon the vacant expression. I have very little experience in taking self-shots. REALLY. gosh i hate it when people whom i’m not so close to, like Z., say stuff like, ‘Xinying, i know you like to camwhore.’ Double-U-Tee-Eff.

Cass has my full body shot and only when i got home did i realise how much my clothes looked like some Korean girl’s. Coz of the balloon sleeves! and O.L. skirt. and pumps. Aaaah i dno luh go see Cass’s blog (if she posted it) and review it yourself!

But Omg i felt so grown up and cool! Even if it was just for a day. i’d originally gone to the salon for a haircut and highlights session but i couldnt resist asking Michelle (the nice helper) blow dry my hair into waves. Cool change huh! If i had the skills and proper hair texture i’d make it permanent.

I promised to show how i kept my Online loots in my previous blog, so here it is!

I bet you’re thinking, wth is this weird box with that cheena looking device? Its actually my laptop cooler which my Dad had bought from (where else?) China. But that’s not the point!

Wahahahahaha:

All still in bag for preservation of it’s original quality because washing and stuffing into my drawers is such bad treatment. Gonna have fun unpacking and dressing up

I am still gonna shop online because 1. it’s so much fun and 2. it’s convenient and 3. why shop outside when you have great brands like Bonito Chico? BC’s hiring and i sooooo want a job working with them but it seems so hard-to-get! and if i applied i would be up against those people way past their A levels or Diplomas and probably have already had their first jobs. But it really really suits me given the immense amount of time i spend online and my love of organisation! Aaaah. See if i ever get the courage to type up sthg and send it to them luh.

Now for reminiscing..

I find that the A levels had not been as huge a deal to me as it was to so many others. There was no MOOD to study on any day i remember. i didn’t have the so-called Pia stage and i must confess that i really really believe that i’m not going to do as well as i probably appear to. It’s like, i spent alot of time trying to distract myself from a particular emotion by shopping online and staying away from a period of study longer than 2 hours. I had this feeling that all that we needed was probably already in our heads and that like, we could just, go ahead yeah? But of course we still needed that refresher thingy.

The A levels revealed to me, the most, how people could change tremendously within a span of what, 2 months? I saw the people too weak and cowardly to face the challenges in the future, i saw the people who ignored others’ wishes and prated on about their own, i saw the people who truly truly cared how others were doing and tried their best to make up for blanks. For the latter, i thank Naomi and Surong who’ve been great confidantes.

I think Surong’s probably the only person who knows me better than i know myself, and Naomi’s (like what Mr Ali said) like my teddy bear who’s always ready for a hug and a ranting session. i love them both!

I also began a Meteor Garden II roll, which was okay for my studies because i already knew it so well and i could do work with it in the background.

Ahhh, After 4 years of blogging on the same ground, this change feels good and manageable. I’m going to let xy-choo stay open for a week or so, for my fans (HAHA) to read my old posts and reminisce. Then i’m going to close it and those memories will be mine alone! Lol. Yup so, if you did like the way i blogged in the past, just take the chance to read it now because you won’t be able to read it again!

So arrogant of me but whatever luh.

I was really and truly surprised today.  Today is what’s known as “Black Friday’ for us here in the States, the day after Thanksgiving when there are sales out the wazoo and bargains to be had around every corner.  The stores open at insanely early hours and I don’t know if it’s just to see how many people will get up at the butt crack of dawn for a $3 toaster, or what.  If it was me making those decisions, they’d open at the crack of 7AM, a much more respectable hour.  But, since they don’t ask me, the hour of opening has become increasingly early.  Case in point: Toys R Us. This year, they opened at MIDNIGHT! yes, midnight as in 12AM.  Old Navy opened at 3AM, but they had the best giveaway ever, a free Lego Rock Band game w/a $20 purchase (the game retails for $49). And of course with mounting pressure for increased sales, Sears has joined the 4AM club this year, much to my chagrin.  Why do I care about Sears, you ask?  My dear, sweet, lovely husband is a store manager for Sears.  Which means he went to bed last evening at 6:30PM to get up at 2AM so he could be at his store at 2:30AM and open the doors at 4AM to the masses waiting outside his door for the early bird deals. 

What was it that surprised me?  Well, here it is.  We have a dog, love her though I do, she sheds so much that every time I run the vacuum, there is enough fur in the bucket to make another dog! Literally, she shakes and the fur flies.  Target had a Dyson Absolute Animal vacuum on for $200 off the regular price.  $200 is a lot of money, I don’t care who you are. Well, if you’re  Madonna or A-Rod, that’s just pocket change. But since I’m not either of them, nor do I know anyone remotely in that league, $200 is a fair amount to be saving.

At 4AM when my alarm went off, I hit the snooze and debated with myself should or shouldn’t I?  It’s cold out and so warm and snuggly here in  my bed.  Finally, my desire to have  pet-hair-free carpet won out.  I pulled myself out of bed dressed and ventured to my nearest Target in search of a vacuum that promises a great cleaning of my carpet. I had a list of a few things I was on a mission for, in addition to the vacuum.  When I pulled up in the parking lot at 4:45AM, the line crossed the front of the building.  I thought I was well dressed for the cold, but it was still damned cold.  The woman in front of me was asking people if anyone was there for a vacuum. I piped up and said ‘I am.’  This year, the difference is quantity.  Last year, the retailers ordered way more stock than they sold and ended up taking a loss on it when they had to sell at mark down prices. So this year, they have only ordered limited quantities.  Almost every ad I read, under the really great deals was a disclaimer “Limited quantities” or “while supplies last.’  I knew I had to get in, find the Dyson display immediately if I wanted this wonderful piece of machinery that was to make my life a little less hairy.

I pressed through the crush of people and made my way to the place I thought I’d seen the vacuums before.  This was a new store and I’d only been in it once before.  I found an employee who directed me to the vacuums.  To my surprise, there stood the woman who had been in front of me outside, waving to me. I did that whole, look around and be sure she was meaning me.  Yes, she did mean me.  She’d gotten to the display before I did and she had two off the shelf, leaving only one on the rack.

She said, “here! I got this for you!’

‘Really?  Thanks!  You’re the best!’

She looked at her daughter and said, ‘I told her we’re not leaving here until you get here.’

I was shocked.  In the climate where I thought we’d be fighting each other for something, she did something really nice. Would she have done it if there was only one, no way, that was hers.  Since there were a couple left, she helped me out.  As I was standing there looking at her in shock, a guy passed by with one.  So there were 4 for sure that I know about and that’s probably all they had.

 Would I have done the same thing?  I don’t know. I didn’t know her.  I’ll probably never see her again.  But I can promise you one thing, next time something like that happens, I’ll be a bit nicer and less cut-throat.  Or try to be more compassionate.  It is the season of giving after all.

The debut opening of Roy Petley’s gallery in London caused an uproar in the West End, with people seen queuing down the street to get in. In fact, that wintry October night saw so many people in the gallery that the fire department responded four times to heat alarms going off in the building.

This dream of an art gallery began many years ago by a boy abandoned to a children’s home. Trapped in a dark and dreary world, even the beatings by his guardians could not curb Roy’s irrepressible spirit. “My escape was painting and drawing, the reality was horrible. I quite liked the fistfights but I didn’t like the beatings,” he confides. Becoming the first ever to receive a scholarship at the children’s home at the tender age of sixteen, Roy left for Brighton University but after his first semester he decided to go to Florence in the arms of a beautiful woman. His thirst for the foundations of art, well-drawn, well-coloured and well-painted works naturally drew him to the Italian masters of old; Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. Several years later, after living through his work in Italy, he returned to his homeland, England. There, he exhibited on the Green Park railings, a then melting pot of would be artists.

A chance meeting with the Duchess of Kent was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with the British royal family. The late Queen Mother and the Prince of Wales are collectors of his works, the late Queen Mother being particularly fond of his Norfolk landscapes. A whirlwind romance with an adoring public commenced, with sell-out shows following him wherever he went, from London to Barbados, Dublin to Dallas.

To satisfy his love of beautiful sports cars, three Alfa Romeos, engine red Ferraris and an E-type Jaguar once decorated his backyard. He even appeared on Good Morning Texas, flanked between William Shatner who “was on before me trying to promote a video game for Star Wars”, and a piano-playing-pot-bellied-pig who refused to perform. “It wouldn’t play the piano because it was camera shy”, Roy deduced.

Roy’s rags to riches story caught the eye of both the BBC and Sky Television, resulting in documentaries on his life and his art, and forced a change on his outlook on life. “I used to have people lining up to buy my work – but once the BBC did their documentary on me, they ended up banging on my front door trying to buy a paintings, it became a nightmare!” he exclaimed. Once dubbed the Best Dressed Man in London, this sort of major publicity was not in line with Roy’s solitary nature. In the early nineties, he chose tranquillity over fame and moved to a lonely farmhouse in the south-west of France. “I left England to become an unknown, to have a peaceful life”, he said. He quickly applied his energy to rebuilding his new-found home, which was soon to be featured in House & Garden, Homes & Gardens and Interior magazine.

An impressionistic painter, he finds inspiration in his surroundings. In the summers, he is often found by local fishermen knee-deep in water, drawing models draped in flowing white dresses and adorned with wide-brimmed hats that Roy is known for collecting, or painting his neighbour’s children licking ice lollipops in his rose garden.

Self-taught, Roy experiments with all mediums, disclosing how he changes “mediums when I want to change my mind-set”. At his leisure, he moves effortlessly from pastel to oil, watercolour to sanguine. He speaks of each medium with equal passion, stressing on the ability to draw well being essential when working with any medium, particularly watercolour – “There is no changing it…there is only one chance”. He continues on saying, “watercolours are my reference for my oil paintings, an oil painting becomes a fuller version of the watercolour on a canvas.” He describes how Degas used to work with charcoal before drawing in the pastel, but prefers himself to draw with colour immediately. He is also is quick to illustrate that “pastel is a dusty medium and after a short period of working with it, I am always happy to return to my natural medium – oil.”

The subjects of Roy’s works are as varied as his mediums, drawing upon inspiration from anything and everything – portraits, still life, cityscapes and landscapes have all felt the touch of his brush in his paintings. “I usually have an idea of what I want to do before I begin, I see the world through my paintbrush and palette – all that remains to do is to recreate the image that I see in my mind.”

Whether it be landscape or still life, light and shadow are the basis of his works. There is a certain light and youthfulness, a grace and joyfulness that emanates from his paintings. He depicts an untouchable innocence that is reminiscent of childhood and days gone by. Although it may seem an old-fashioned and romantic world, this is Roy’s world as it exists today. Each painting draws you in, engages you with its subtle colours and soft lines.

It is said that once you have had a show in Cork Street, you have made it in the art world. Having exhibited in galleries on the street for over a decade, Roy had reached a point in his life where he wanted to give something back. In his youth, Roy himself had approached gallery after gallery, carrying his portfolio, and had been turned away. In later years, the same galleries would beg him to exhibit with them – he wanted to provide artists with the opportunities he never had, with “a gallery they can trust, where artists feel comfortable”, where the open doors and laid back atmosphere would encourage artists – especially the younger ones. In the autumn of 2003, he did just that. “I started up the gallery because I was really fed up with how artists are treated”, he explained.

Petley Fine Art sets itself apart from other galleries because as Roy proudly states, “this is the first time an artist has owned a major gallery promoting work other than his own”. True to his word, Roy has raised the bar for the whole area by filling his gallery with only the finest paintings and sculptures from an international pantheon of artists. “We have famous artists, infamous artists, and also young artists just starting out in their careers – regardless of where they are in their careers, it is their talent that attracts us to them.”

It is this refreshing concoction of artists that gives the gallery its lively character and explains why artists enjoy exhibiting there. Neil Forster, an artist of Petley Fine Art and an established portrait painter whose sitters include The Prince of Wales, speaks highly of the gallery. “I thought this gallery opening in “the” art street of London and offering art with no over-intellectualizing or posing, is so refreshing that it must in time be one of the most visited galleries in London.”

Roy is also quick to point out that a lot of effort has been made to ensure nothing distracts from the paintings. His long-standing motto being, “the art is foremost, the gallery secondary and all emphasis is on the artists”.

Filled with boundless energy and enthusiasm, Roy floods his gallery with the same vitality he fills his paintings. Now with three galleries spread across Europe, Petley Fine Art seems to be going from strength to strength. As for Roy, does he miss the good old days when he was a struggling painter? “Well,” he laughs, saying, “I have artists ringing up at 4 AM telling me their problems with their wives who are jealous of their models. One artist calls up and says can I come see you now? I think, what’s going on here?”

It’s been a while and I still have not had the chance to edit the required quota of photos, plus all that ugly business at Anime.gr kind of took the fun out of it for a while. Oh, I will get to it eventually, but between work and all sorts of (rather useless, when you think about it carefully) information reaching me, I am seriously not in the mood at this time. At any rate, there is also much preparation to be done for COMICDOM’ s mega blog event, namely the Top 100 Comics of the ’00s (that is to say, the past decade), so the Japanese events stuff takes a back seat for the moment.

That said, I had a bit of time to catch up on some anime I have been downloading and storing with the prospect of watching “someday”. Well, Higashi no Eden (“Eden of the East”) caught my attention and has the added advantage of being limited to just 11 episodes. It tells the story of a group of NEETs (Not in Employment, Education or Training) trying to make their mark upon the world through their own company site and the crossing of their path with the mysterious Takizawa Akira and the Selecao (“The Chosen” in Portuguese) Project. It is an anime filled with rich dialog, conspiracy and the prevalent feeling that something is very wrong with Japan, which only a very select few know of. I must admit that one of the things that got me hooked was the opening sequence, featuring a great song by Oasis, “Falling Down”, which I am posting below for your enjoyment.

Higashi no Eden is a Production I.G. anime (of Ghost in the Shell, Blood+ and Blue Seed fame), so the feeling of mystery, foreboding, the unknown, coupled with weird psychology, are very prevalent. Having watched up to episode 8, I am worried about the story ending with 11 but there are also two movie sequels, Eden of the East: The King of Eden and Eden of the East: Lost Paradise, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for a delivery equally engaging with the story so far.

Justin Thor Simenson, one of Chroma Gallery’s art photographers, came up with a wonderful idea for our 1st Friday in November and these are a few of the photos he took during the opening. Justin recently found a wireless memory card for his digital camera that sends photos directly to his computer as he takes them. So for the opening Justin set up his computer and had a slide show playing of the photos as he took them. It was a fun idea and people really got a kick out of seeing the photos he took right away. We will most likely do that again for future openings. Thanks Justin! (Click on images to see larger)
