Woot!  I’m in the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta program.  I’m installing the program as I write this.  It’s a good thing too because I had just been researching Wikipedia for a comparison of wordprocessors and I had just installed OpenOfficeOrg 3.2.0 developer build.  I normally wouldn’t want to write my Statement of Purpose on such beta software but OOO lacks parity against Office.  I tried importing my SOP in there and while it looked good, it didn’t preserve revision history.  I have no idea how to turn it on and I do not wish to learn.  (Maybe I should save as docx?)  The home and student edition of office 2007 that came with my new laptop (ASUS UL80Vt) is not activated so I can only use it a few times more before it will lock me out.

Ok, so the starter edition installed and oh wow, what’s that?  Advertisement?  Crap.

Ok, MS, if you want to give me ads, the starter edition better be free when it leaves beta.

Also, no revision history looks like either in the starter edition.

Spent an intense last week in Orvieto, Italy. First two days had the 2nd odf plugfest; glad to see so many enthusiastic people from the odf universe again, or for the first time in person – and of course witnessing big corporation representatives like Doug and Rob sitting on the table, striving for better odf interop.

Following that had three days of OpenOffice.org conference, with many interesting talks (including those from my excellent colleagues Petr, Noel, Cedric, Fridrich, Kendy, Rodo and Kohei).
I found the outlined ideas around an "odfkit" (the similarity in name to webkit is not by accident) quite remarkable – if that ends up in more code reuse across the place (and ideally also reusing existing code in their implementation), this is Good ™.

Also great to meet the ever-energetic Chris Noack again; it was mostly due to him that I attended a few UX-related talks – and had at least the occasional feeling that approaches there were a bit by-the-book, maybe leaving a few peculiarities and potential synergies available in software generally and FLOSS specifically out of the equation. Reportedly, there are also students working on UX topics, so it would be really awesome to see them join the education project – in an attempt to tear down the wall between coders and interaction designers, that at least I perceive is existing in OOo.

Been at the mentor summit for the first time, and it was even exceeding my high expectations. Awe-some. If there’s another event that pulls together so many friendly high-profile FLOSS people, I’d like to know immediately.

Ein professionelles Band in der Filmproduktion hat einen so genannten Timecode. Dieser besteht aus Stunde, Minute, Sekunde und Frames. Eine Sekunde hat bei PAL/Video 25 Frames.

Möchte man solch einen Timecode nun in Excel addieren, dann gibt es keine vorgefertigte Lösung um dies zu tun. Man kann sich aber mit dieser zweigeteilten Variante behelfen.

Dazu legt man ein Feld als Zeit-Feld an und ein zweites Feld als Zahlenfeld. Die Zeiten kann Excel selbst addieren. Bei den Frames müssen wir nun nachhelfen. Nehmen wir also an, dass A1 bis A4 die Zeit enthält und B1-B4 die jeweiligen Frames, dann sieht die Lösung so aus.

Zeit:

=SUMME(A1:A4)+(GANZZAHL(SUMME(B1:B4) / 25) / 86400)

Frames:

=REST(SUMME(B1:B4);25)

Die Zeit wird erst ganz normal mit SUMME addiert, dann addieren wir dazu den ganzzahligen Teiler von der Summe der Frames. Oder anders ausgedrückt: “Wie viel mal passt 25 in die Summe der Frames?” Denn bei 25 Frames ist die Sekunde voll und wir müssen den Wert auf die Zeit addieren. Ganzzahlig, weil wir nur volle Sekunden addieren wollen. Da in Excel die “1″ (bei der Zeit-Formatierung) für einen Tag steht müssen wir den Wert noch auf Sekunden bringen, also teilen wir durch 24 Stunden x 60 Minuten x 60 Sekunden = 86400.

Bei den Frames teilen wir durch den 25 und geben den Rest aus. Alle vollen 25 Frames haben wir ja bereits im ersten Schritt zu den Sekunden hinzu gezählt.

Als Ergebnis haben wir die korrekte Summe von den angewählten Timecodes.

Nachtrag: Die oben verwendeten Formeln funktionieren exakt so auch in OpenOffice.org!

With the mentor summit coming up, it’s high time to wrap up this year’s Google Summer of Code for ooo-build. We started the term with 6 students, of which one was sadly missing in action right from the beginning (to set the record straight, he returned all funds).

All participants initially had to fight with OOo’s inherent complexity; I can only stress the importance of getting used to build system, installation & debugging peculiarities before the actual coding starts.

Progress until midterm was good to excellent, except for one case, where we had to make the very hard decision whether to continue with a student showing insufficient results – in the end, the agreement was to drop him, pretty much according to all best practices and lessons learned from other organisations. What I find most encouraging, and open-minded, is the fact that he’s now returning to OOo, and even bringing a few other students from his university for a joint project. Welcome back, Jon!

Which leaves us with a total of four completed projects:

• Cross-building OOo for win32 (Jesus Corrius, the code (basically all crosswin32-prefixed patches))
• Impress slide layout rework (Dona Hertel, the code)
• Writer document comparison (Tzvetelina Tzeneva, the code)
• Writer document navigation buttons (Maja Djordjevic, the code)

For the last two, let me just reference Tzvetelina’s and Maja’s respective blog postings; I couldn’t possibly explain and advertise it better.

The idea for the cross-building stems from the fact that compiling OOo on win32 is dog slow. With OOo consisting of some 90% c++, compilation is highly i/o-intensive, with an access pattern that apparently makes the Linux buffer cache shine, and the Windows one fall flat on its face. Additionally, of course you’d free people from buying and relying on proprietary software. Additionally, having something cross-buildable usually makes a project’s build system cleaner and more orthogonal.

With the Impress slide layout project, the aim was to get rid of the many hard-coded places where slide layout kinds were handled, following the paradigm of having pure data – the general layout – in a data structure, and not implicitely in code. Of course, an extra benefit is that changing or adding layouts now no longer needs re-compilation of OOo. Specifically, Impress now loads an autolayout configuration file on startup, and exposes the necessary data structures via OOo’s component model to the lower-level subsystems, for import and export.

This was my second GSoC term as a mentor, and my first one as an organisation admin. I’m more than happy with the results; our students did really well, and I hope we’ll see continued contribution from them over time. I also wish to thank my fellow mentors for their time and enthusiasm, and of course Google for making all of this possible in the first place!

Finally, there’ll be a panel presentation of the GSoC results at the annual OpenOffice.org conference; we’ll hopefully manage to get most of the students and mentors there. Will keep you posted.

במהלך חול המועד סוכות קיימתי פגישה עם יונתן בן אברהם מטק מערכות לגבי פרוייקט אופן אופיס העברי. הפגישה עסקה בתוכנית העבודה של הפרוייקט לשנת 2010. מעבר לרצון לעזור לפרוייקט, מטרתי בפגישות הללו הן לראות כיצד ניתן לערב את הקהילה בפרוייקט ולוודא כי תוצריו חוזרים לקהילת התוכנה החופשית ולאזרחי ישראל (כתוצאה מהמימון הממשלתי).

תוכנית עבודה 2010
תוכנית העבודה לשנת 2010 הועברה למשרד האוצר לאישור. תוכנית זאת שמה דגש על השתלבות בפרוייקט העולמי, ושחרור גרסאות עבריות על פי הלו”ז הרשמי. השתלבות זאת הינה שינוי מהותי בדרך העבודה של הפרוייקט עד היום, ותיצור למעשה גרסה אופן אופיס נוספת הזמינה למשתמשי חלונות.

בשנה האחרונה הושם דגש רב על שילוב התיקונים בגרסה הבין לאומית, וכתוצאה מכך התמיכה שלה בעברית השתפרה רבות, אך היא עדיין מכילה בעיות ידועות. לעומת זאת, בגרסה העברית קיימים תיקונים שלא התקבלו לגרסה הבין לאומית מסיבות שונות, ועל כן התמיכה שלה בעברית היא טובה יותר. כמו שראינו בגרסה האחרונה – הוצאת גרסה נפרדת מאפשרת לטק מערכות חופש לשלב רכיבים שעדיין לא כלולים בגרסה הרשמי כמו תוסף ה-PDF Import.

יצירת גרסה עברית במסגרת הפרוייקט הבין לאומי, תאפשר לאנשי טק מערכות להתרכז בתמיכה העברית הקיימת בגרסה הבין לאומית במהלך הפיתוח שלה, במקום לנסות לתקן את הבעיות לאחר השחרור כתוצאה מעבודה על הגרסה העברית שלהם.

אומנם בהתחלה מדובר בוויתר כלשהו לגבי רמת התמיכה בעברית, אך מדובר בשינוי שיניב פירות לאורך הזמן וייצר גרסאות שהתמיכה שלהן בעברית תהיה חלק מובנה ולא תוספת בדיעבד. בשלב מסויים, הגרסה העברית של טק מערכות תהפוך למיותרת מאחר וכל התמיכה בה תהיה קיימת בגרסה הבין לאומית – יש לזכור כי זהו המצב האופטימלי והרצוי מבחינת המשתמשים.

סגנונות מסמך עם תמיכה ב-RTL
טק מערכות שחררו תוסף לאופן אופיס שיוצר גרסת RTL לכל הסגנונות במסמך מסויים, וכך מאפשר למשתמשים להשתמש בסגנונות של אופן אופיס בלי צורך לערוך אותם עבור עברית. באופן אישי, אני מכיר את זה בעיקר משימוש בסגנון הכותרות. פרטים על התוסף אפשר למצוא בהודעת השחרור של אלן ינגר מטק מערכות בפורום תפוז.

תרגום לעברית
בשנת 2009 נפתחה מערכת pootle לתרגום לעברית של ממשק העזרה של אופן אופיס. מטרת המערכת היא לאפשר לקהילה לתרגם חלק באופן אופיס שטק מערכות אינה מתכננת לתרגם.

כתוצאה מכמות המחרוזות הענקית, קשה לתרגם את כולן, ולמרות מאמצים של צוות המתנדבים, התרגום יצא חלקי – דבר שבשלב זה משאיר אותו לא שמיש. נדרש מאמץ נוסף כדי לסיימו למרות הקושי שבתרגום טקסט משולב HTML ולא טקסט “נקי”.

עבור התרגום של ממשק המשתמש טק מערכות מתכננים לבצע הגהה מקצועית ואף תרגום מחדש בחלק מהמקרים. למרות זאת, ביקשתי מטק מערכות יש ישחררו לקהילה את קובצי ה-PO של ממשק המשתמש כדי לאפשר לקהילה לבצע חלק מהתרגומים בעצמה, גם אם מדובר בתיקוני שגיאות כתיב וכו’.

כדי להוריד מהצורך לנהל את הנושא אצל טק מערכות, התנדבתי אני לרכז את הנושא. אבקש מכל מי שיש לו תיקון הקשור לתרגום הממשק העברי לשלוח לי טלאי של קובץ ה-PO הרלוונטי.

קבצי ה-PO נוספו לאתר המראה עבור כל גרסה. גרסה 3.1.1 היא הראשונה שמכילה את קבצי ה-PO של הממשק העברי שלה.

בהמשך לפתרון בעיית הביצועים בטעינת המילון העברי לאופן אופיס, ישולב המילון בגרסה 3.2 של אופן אופיס. תוך שבוע מפתיחת הבקשה להכללת המילון התקבל אישור כי הוא שולב בגרסה הבאה.

גרסה 3.2, שבטא שלה אמורה לצאת בימים הקרובים, צפויה להיות משוחררת במהלך דצמבר 2009.

כאשר מתחילים לכתוב בעברית באופן אופיס (גרסאות 2 ו-3), התוכנה קופאת לזמן מסויים (בד”כ כמה שניות בודדות). מבדיקה שבוצעה בעבר, מדובר בקפיאה הנובעת מטעינת המילון העברי. הטעינה קוראת רק כאשר מתחילים לכתוב בעברית, ובודק האיות מזהה את השפה וטוען את המילון.

אלן ינגר מטק מערכות, כתב בפורום אופן אופיס בתפוז כי הוא מצא מעקף לעניין ע”י המרת המילון לקידוד UTF-8 במקום ISO-8859-8. מבדיקה שבוצעה ע”י מספר אנשים, המעקף אכן עובד, וזמן הטעינה מתקצר לפחות משניה. אלן פתח את באג 105490 כדי לתקן את המילון הזמין באתר אופן אופיס העולמי.

בדביאן (וכתוצאה מכך גם באובונטו), המילונים אינם בשימוש ע”י כל תוכנה בנפרד, אלא ברמת מערכת ההפעלה ולכן משותפים ע”י מספר תוכנות (Thunerbird לדוגמה). מבדיקה שעשיתי נראה כי החלפת הקידוד אינה משפיעה על שאר התוכנות. לפני שאעשה את השינוי בחבילות של דביאן, אני צריך לברר כמה דברים. עדכון בהמשך.

The motivations and actual demographic groups the result’s responders recruited themselves from set aside: 53% pro UI-overhaul seems to be pretty low; at least this would make keeping the old UI optionally available a priority for me (and not an afterthought).

As I’ve been hearing from people frustrated with this issue a lot lately, and have also recently learned how to correct it, I thought I’d share.  OpenOffice.org Writer’s default margins are set to 0.79″, which is equivalent to 2 cm, apparently a standard in some other parts the world.  Correcting this permanently requires creating a new default document template for OOo Writer, which is actually pretty easy.

First, open up OpenOffice.org Writer and make the document just the way you like it.  You can change the default font, add headers, change the line spacing, or whatever.  Just don’t forget to change all the margins to 1″ (If you are having trouble doing this go to Format > Page and in the bottom left corner change top, bottom, left, and right to 1.00″, and hit OK).

Next, go to File > Templates > Save.  In the new window, click in the New Templates field, and give your template a name such as “My New Default Template With One Inch Margins” or whatever you’d like to call it.  In the category box, leave My Templates selected, and click OK.

The last step is to make this new template the default for new OOo Writer documents.  To do this, go to File > Templates > Organize.  Double click the My Templates folder in the left pane, and select the template you just created.  Next, click the Commands button, and click the Set as Default Template option, and click Close.

That’s it!  From now on, all new documents you create will have the correct margins.  If  you found this helpful, leave me a comment to let me know!
