The Internet is based on open data, based on open standards and open specifications to enable conversations.

For the web, the conversation has turned from open source to the data and markup behind it. Data is becoming as important as source. An open web needs open data coming from open specifications. Three major specifications have been created, all from different backgrounds – OpenID, OAuth, and OpenSocial. They share a lot of the same goals and views, but have been created ad hoc with no overarching community that transcends the projects.

David Recordon announces the start of the Open Web Foundation. Modeled after the Apache Software Foundation, the Open Web Foundation’s goal is to do for specifications what open source has done in its arena, building open community for incubation, licensing, copyright. Impressive support for the Open Web Foundation has come from companies such as Yahoo, Facebook, Plaxo and many more who want to continue to build the web on open standards.

I got a chance to work on opensocial platform. I was fascinated by the idea of working on the applications on a completely different platform. It has its own challenges. I came across an interesting function adjustHeight(). It is used so that it could adjust the height of the frame (application developed for the container). However it does not work for Safari and Opera browsers. The browser calls the function after the content is displayed and hence the height of the iframe is not set according to the content. To overcome this problem we use the function setTimeInterval(), which calls the function adjustHeight() till the time iframe is dispalyed and we can clear the interval once the iframe is displayed.

Heartened to hear that this years Enterprise 2.0 conference in San Francisco features a session on ‘OpenSocial in the Enterprise’. Mike Gotta, an analyst from the Burton Group, describes some of the issues that OpenSocial needs to resolve to become truly applicable at the Enterprise level – these include the definition of ‘friend’ and single-signon and other authentication issues.

But his description of the general environment that enterprise developers find themselves in is pertinent to our enterprise – the academic biomedical research institution – and his approach mirrors our thinking. The question is, how do we tie our (academic/biomedical research-focused) development of research networking products to the trends outside of us?

We need to start designing and implementing social networking platforms that have capabilities to span internal and external audiences. While initiatives that started off in the consumer market may not have the necessary identity, security, and other necessary services – alternatives within the enterprise are often not viable for consumer environments – so we are left somewhere in the middle – with no one particularly happy. Given overall consumerization of IT trends, it seems to me at least, that it’s more viable (in the social computing realm) to start with efforts like OpenSocial and ActivityStrea.ms and evolve them for the enterprise than the other way around.

Requirements:

7 years Linux admin experience
5 years RHEL admin experience
5 years RPM management and admin experience
3 years working with MySQL
Sound understanding of web services and related technologies (HTTP, REST, XML, JSON, etc)
Experience with Linux web servers (Apache2, nginx, lighttpd, etc)
Experience with monitoring systems and components (nagios, cacti, etc)
Exposure to scripting languages such as Perl, Python, etc.

Really nice-to-haves but not required:

Experience with Erlang
Experience with Ruby on Rails
Exposure to Jabber/XMPP
Exposure to distributed / grid computing
ejabberd administration and configuration
Experience with second and third tier services and components like memcached (or like systems), search applications (lucene, xapian, sphinx, etc), etc.

Realistically, these are also nice to haves but not required:

Exposure to functional programming languages.
Exposure to the Facebook Platform, Open Social and or other web services and systems
Comfortable working in an Agile work environment.
Plays games and occasionally keeps tabs on the gaming world/industry.

Am 7. Oktober findet die zweite VZ-GeekNight in der Berliner Volksbar statt. Ab 19 Uhr stellen euch die Entwickler der VZ-Netzwerke den aktuellen Stand zur Öffnung der Plattformen für externe Applikation im Rahmen von Open Social vor! Trefft die Projektverantwortlichen und Entwickler und stellt eure Fragen – z.B. wie können neue Anwendungen auf die Plattform kommen, welche Geschäftsmodelle gibt es, welche Bedingungen werden an Entwickler gestellt, usw.

Tre giorni per parlare di tecnologie e cittadinanza digitale: questo l’obiettivo di VeneziaCamp 2009.

Barcamp, open session e conferenze occuperanno le giornate dal 23 al 25 ottobre presso l’Isola del Lazzaretto Vecchio ribattezzata per l’occasione “Digital Island”.

Tanti gli incontri previsti nel programma ancora in fase di delineazione. Ma i temi sono già chiari: cultura e cittadinanza digitale, nuovi paradigmi della comunicazione on line, social media al servizio dei cittadini.

Gli appuntamenti fra cultura e innovazione. Proprio per le applicazioni elaborate per piattaforme come Facebook, Opensocial e Bebo è dedicato il premio “SocialApp Italia Cittadinanza Digitale ‘09”. Promosso da TOP-IX e Mikamai con il supporto del Social Application Program di Sun Microsystems, è dedicato a team, singoli sviluppatori, agenzie, che abbiano sviluppato o che abbiano intenzione di sviluppare applicazioni riguardanti i seguenti temi: viaggio, turismo, vita negli spazi urbani, città di Venezia. Per partecipare occorre iscriversi al sito socialappitalia.com e candidare la propria applicazione entro il 30 settembre. Le applicazioni vincenti saranno premiate con due anni di hosting gratuito sulla piattaforma SocialUP.

Un evento 2.0 . Centrale per l’evento è il ruolo del web 2.0. Tutte le piattaforme di socialnetworks sono state attivate a riguardo, da Facebook a Ning, da Twitter agli istant wiki. Chi è interessato a partecipare al barcamp, previsto nella giornata del 24, può iscriversi sul sito dell’evento e indicare l’argomento scelto come oggetto dell’intervento. I partecipanti avranno a disposizione diverse sale, dotate di videoproiettore e connessione ad Internet, e 30 minuti a testa per presentare le proprie riflessioni e discuterne con gli altri.

Network Innovatori e amministrazione digitale. Il network Innovatori ha fornito il proprio patrocinio promuovendo tra le iniziative la presentazione del Manifesto “Amministrare 2.0”, oltre alla consegna del Premio SocialApp Italia 2009 e il workshop “Carta Etica Digitale” per un uso consapevole della Rete, coordinato appunto da Massimo Melica, presidente di Innovatori. For første gang har jeg faktisk gjort som stemmen i Spotify-reklamen ba meg om. Jeg gikk til ShareMyPlaylists.com, hvor det ble annonsert at jeg kunne dele mine Spotify-spillelister. Men der stoppet jeg. Ikke pokker om jeg skal dele mine spillelister der. Slik mistet ShareMyPlaylists meg som bruker:

La meg koble til med en brukerkonto jeg allerede har
Jeg har sikkert flere hundre brukerkontoer. Ikke lag en ny nettjeneste hvor du ikke tillater meg å logge inn uten å opprette enda en ny brukerkonto. Bruk Facebook Connect, OpenSocial og Twitter Connect. Digg og mange flere gjør det.

Det er en grunn til Schengen-traktaten er en hit. Når man slipper å få utstedt nytt visum er det lettere å hoppe på et billigfly til nabolandet. Nettaviser, nettbutikker, nettjenester – ikke tving meg til å opprette enda en ny brukerkonto. Eksisterende kontoer gir dere mengder av informasjon som fritt kan brukes.

Dersom du skal lage en ny nettjeneste, spør deg selv: Hvordan finner brukeren tjenesten? Deretter, hvor mange terskler må brukeren gå over for at jeg skal få lov til å hjelpe brukeren slik at hun velger å bruk nettopp meg? Reduser kostnaden ved registrering og betaling til det minimale.

La meg komme med forslag
Etter at den første frustrasjonen hadde lagt seg tenkte jeg: “Jeg får gi beskjed til ShareMyPlaylists. Slik kan man da ikke ha det. Jeg må hjelpe dem og komme med forslag”. Her møtte jeg grov feil nummer to. Det eneste jeg fant som lignet kommunikasjon med brukerne var en blogg og en enkel kontaktside. Greit, de er på Twitter, men hvem er ikke det.

Å kommentere på et tilfeldig blogginnlegg virket ikke særlig hensiktsmessig, så jeg gikk til kontaktsiden. Alt jeg fant på kontaktsiden var en beskjed om at epost ikke virket, men at jeg kunne kontakte “Admin Kieron”. Sistnevnte mulighet krevde forøvrig innlogging.

Oppfordringen min er: Ikke lag en nettside i 2009 hvor du ikke engasjerer brukeren i utviklingen. Det finnes flere verktøy for dette, som UserVoice. Jo tidligere, jo bedre. NRK og Turistforeningen sin Ut.no er et godt eksempel på dette.

Som du sikker ser, så starter begge feilene med “La meg …”. La meg, altså brukeren, få velge. Ikke tro at du vet bedre enn meg. Summen av hva jeg og alle andre meg på internett vet er langt mer enn va du vet. Og det beste av alt, vi vil hjelpe deg.

OpenSocial is a set of APIs for building social applications that run on the web. OpenSocial’s goal is to make more apps available to more users, by providing a common API that can be used in many different contexts. Developers can create applications, using standard JavaScript and HTML, that run on social websites that have implemented the OpenSocial APIs. These websites, known as OpenSocial containers, allow developers to access their social information; in return they receive a large suite of applications for their users.
The OpenSocial APIs expose methods for accessing information about people, their friends, and their data, within the context of a container. This means that when running an application on Orkut, you’ll be interacting with your Orkut friends, while running the same application on MySpace lets you interact with your MySpace friends.

OpenSocial & Best Practices for Social Networking Websites

What is the best web design for a social networking platform? We’re certainly thinking about this as we plan on the release of UCSF Profiles, our research (as opposed to ’social’) networking site. Smashing Magazine has a useful article that summarizes key principles. One of these is about standards – they encourage the usage of OpenSocial as a standard in building social networking sites. And – we’re glad to say, we’re on it. We’re in the process of extending our research networking product, ‘Profiles’, as an OpenSocial “container”. i.e. retrofitting the software so that it’s possible to use other OpenSocial applications, built, for example, for applications like Linked In, to plug and play with our product. This will be a primary contribution of UCSF’s in the continued open source development of the Harvard-developed ‘Profiles’.

Facebook and Twitter

As some of you have already discovered, we’ve added support for using Facebook and Twitter (Call -> OpenSocial). This MiniApplet allows you to use these services “natively” from your Android device.

Slide the screen left and right to navigate between the dashboard and your selected services.

We’re planning on adding support for flickr photo browsing, uploads, etc in the next few weeks.

* Please note : to use the Facebook features, you must grant permissions from our Facebook App (http://apps.facebook.com/mykewlos).

Các ứng dụng OpenSocial này chạy trực tiếp trên nền web, được phát triển cho MySpace, Okut, Hi5, Facebook và một số mạng xã hội khác.

Centrl

Centrl là công cụ hỗ trợ người dùng trò chuyện với bạn bè trong cộng đồng mạng xã hội. Ứng dụng này có thể được cài đặt trên nhiều mạng như MySpace, Orkut, Ning, Hi5… và có thể xác định vị trí của người dùng trên bản đồ, do đó bạn có thể tìm thấy bạn chat ở cùng khu vực với mình.

MiniTweet

Đây là ứng dụng đơn giản giúp bạn nhúng một hộp thông tin của Twitter vào trang MySpace để hiển thị và cập nhật liên tục những thay đổi từ tài khoản Twitter của bạn. Nếu muốn vào trang Twitter của mình, bạn chỉ cần nhấp vào liên kết trong hộp thông tin đó.

Music iLike

Music iLike có phiên bản cho người dùng MySpace, Orkut và Hi5 và Facebook. Sau khi cài đặt, Music iLike cho phép tìm kiếm các video âm nhạc, thêm vào hồ sơ và khách truy cập trang của bạn cũng có thể thưởng thức các ca khúc đó. Tuy nhiên, ứng dụng chỉ phát một đoạn ngắn của bài hát và nếu muốn nghe toàn bộ, bạn phải mua từ iTunes, Amazon hoặc nhấp vào liên kết tích hợp trong ứng dụng.

Music iLike giúp tìm kiếm bài hát.

OpenSocial App Dev

Đây là một ứng dụng không thể bỏ qua cho các chuyên gia lập trình. Nó có thể cài đặt trên Ning, Hi5, MySpace hay Orkut, được thiết kế riêng cho những trang web OpenSocial. Sau khi cài đặt, bạn có thể dùng công cụ này để xây dựng ứng dụng OpenSocial hoàn chỉnh bằng JavaScript. OpenSocial App Dev cũng hỗ trợ xem trước ứng dụng chạy như thế nào trước khi xuất ra tệp XML.

PollDaddy

PollDaddy tạo ra những phiếu thăm dò hay khảo sát trực tuyến và nhúng vào blog. Ứng dụng có sẵn cho người dùng MySpace, Ning, Hi5, Orkut. Bạn cũng có thể xem lại các thống kê về cuộc bình bầu nhằm biết được phản hồi từ người đã khảo sát.

The Scramble Game

The Scramble Game có thể chơi được trên Hi5 hay Ning hay Facebook. Cách chơi đơn giản chỉ là “chộp” lấy những ký tự đang hiển thị từ từ trước mặt và ghép nó thành một từ tiếng Anh có nghĩa. Bạn có thể chơi với máy hoặc cùng bạn bè trong mạng xã hội.

Stunt Pilot

Stunt Pilot là game thú vị cho người dùng Ning, Orkut và Facebook. Trong game bạn nhập vai làm phi công nhào lộn bay qua những vòng tròn, qua càng nhiều vòng thì bạn đạt càng được nhiều điểm và có cơ hội lọt vào bảng xếp hạng những người chơi Stunt Pilot trong mạng xã hội.

YouTube Top Favorites

YouTube Top Favorites sẽ thêm danh sách những đoạn video clip nổi bật vào MySpace. Tuy nhiên, ứng dụng này không hỗ trợ bạn tìm kiếm video, thay vào đó chỉ hiển thị một danh sách những clip được bình chọn nhiều hay được xem nhiều nhất.

Danh sách các video clip được xem nhiều nhất của YouTube.

Để tìm các ứng dụng trên, bạn sử dụng chức năng tìm kiếm trong mạng xã hội của mình với từ khóa là tên của chương trình tương ứng.

Google's OpenSocial Evangelist Leaves Google

Kevin Marks, one of the leading voices on Google-backed OpenSocial and Friend Connect, has left the Mountain View, Calif.-based search engine, he announced on his blog. With his exit, Google (s goog) might have lost one of its most visible evangelists. Kevin, who in the past worked at Technorati, is one of the smartest guys I have met, and I have often tapped into his expertise on many things social. It is not clear what Kevin’s next gig will be. On his blog he writes:

I’ll still be working on web standards through the groups above, the Open Web Foundation, the Open Rights Group, and more. Professionally, I’ll be coding, writing and speaking on the social web via several new projects.

In his exit post, Kevin didn’t really say why he was leaving the company. I wonder if it has something to do with Google’s inability to totally grok the social web. OpenSocial was launched with much fanfare but seems to be lagging behind Facebook and its Facebook Connect effort.

As you’ve likely heard by now, we launched our first Twitter integration features at LinkedIn earlier this week. For professionals who want to make Twitter part of their professional identity, you can now easily add your Twitter account to your LinkedIn profile, and seamlessly post LinkedIn status updates to Twitter, and vice-versa.

This launch also brings with it a brand new addition to the LinkedIn application platform: Tweets.

Tweets is an application that allows you to seamless integrate basic Twitter functionality into your LinkedIn experience. For our users who are regular users of Twitter, Tweets provides the following:

Twitter client functionality, right from your LinkedIn homepage. Tweets adds a module to your homepage that allows you to easily see the most recent tweets of the people you follow on Twitter. You can also easily reply to each tweet, or retweet it. Better still, you can even share it with your LinkedIn connections.

Add your recent tweets to your LinkedIn profile. Tweets adds a module to your profile that shows your Twitter account and most recent tweets with a rich, compelling presentation. You can easily choose to either display your most recent tweets, or only those tweets which feature the #in or #li hashtags.

Easily browse the tweets of people you follow. Once you click through into the Tweets application, you can easily click on any Twitter user name, and view the most recent tweets of that user.

Next week, we’ll be adding Tweets to the Application directory on LinkedIn. For the time being, if you’re interested in giving Tweets a try, here is the link to the Tweets installation page. It’s also available from the “Add Application” menu on the homepage.

Tweets joins its sibling application, Company Buzz, the most popular application to date on the LinkedIn platform. Company Buzz makes it simple for professionals to easily keep track of what people are saying about their company, products, competitors, and partners in real time by monitoring saved Twitter searches. Together, they are a powerful set of tools for professionals to make monitoring Twitter a part of their LinkedIn routine.

Ning talks about OpenSocial

Just got turned on to Ning by Jim and definitely will be spending some time digging into it. It’s a cross between a blog, a social network, and RSS reader all rolled into one. Not exactly sure if it’s a flash in the pan, but thus far it’s pretty slick and the buzz would suggest that it’s certainly got legs. I’m almost tempted to keep it to myself but that would certainly go against the tenets of being a good social media citizen now wouldn’t it?

It did take me a good 15 minutes to figure out the interface and where to do what. If you’re slow like me, here’s two quick tips: 1.) manage tab on the right hand side (crucial), 2.) your Network: Features, Tab Manager, and Ning Apps are most immediately crucial.

Add a Magazine App to your Ning Social Network [Appathon]

As part of our 2.9 release, Feedly makes it easy today to add a magazine tab to your Ning social network. Here is what is looks like:

How does it work? Feedly users can open their feedly, drill down into a category and use the new “embed” action to convert that feedly category into a Ning Open Social Application/Gadget – in just one click!

The generated magazine widget has skin support and will automatically morph to fit into the color scheme you have selected for your social network.

The generated application has also activity stream support so members of the social network can easily pick articles they like and post them to their activity stream.

Sharing articles using Open Social Activity Stream

One of the key features of the magazine widget is it ability to curate/filter the content: as the owner of the magazine widget, you can manually select which articles are featured in the magazine by sharing those articles in your feedly. But the widget also include a back-up filtering feature where it will automatically complement the articles you have manually picked with the “best” articles based on Feedly+Google Reader recommendations

Because the widget is based on Open Social 0.8, you should be able to add it to any container which supports that standard.

One last thing, Ning is in the process of building out a cool app directory so if you feel that your magazine are really good, you should submit them in the directory and start driving traffic to your magazine applications!
