The Grupo Regina Hoteles want to recommend 10 different things to do in Paris! 1.The Eiffel Tower –

The Grupo Regina Hoteles want to recommend 10 different things to do in Paris!

1.The Eiffel Tower – No list concerning Paris would be complete without a mention of The Eiffel Tower, and this holds true for a list of cultural activities, as well. Not only can you take a tour of the historic monument, but there are numerous other events held here as well.

2.Notre Dame de Paris – Perhaps one of the most notable Gothic style cathedrals of all time, Notre Dame de Paris is one of the city’s most notable attractions; and it is well-known for its annual Lent sermons, a tradition that has continued since the 1840s.

3.Tour de France – Although the starting point of the 3,500 kilometre race varies each year, and the race actually goes through several countries that border France, the ending point of the final stage is always in Paris; making this race one of the most popular activities in Parisian culture to date.

4.Palais Garnier – Parisians have always loved their opera and theatre, and they still do. And with the Palais Garnier, also known as the Opera de Paris, theatre patrons can enjoy classic ballets and opera performances in a historic, 2,200 seat venue that dates all the way back to 1875.

5.Stade de France – Every culture enjoys sporting events and activities, and Paris is no exception. The 80,000 seat venue was originally built in anticipation for the 1998 FIFA World Cup; and when France defeated Brazil to win the cup, France’s national stadium was instantly thrust into the spotlight as one of Paris’ most beloved attractions.

6.Opera Bastille – Originally designed to replace the Palais Garnier, which never came to fruition, the Opera Bastille has found its niche hosting shows and events with a more “modern” feel. And with 2,723 there is plenty of room for those who want to enjoy the cultural activities that are held here.

7.The Louvre – The national museum of France, The Louvre is a significant landmark as it holds some of France’s most prolific pieces of history, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo statue. Because of this, touring The Louvre is one of the most popular cultural activities that the city of France has to offer.

8.Rock en Seine – Parisians like their live rock music, too – proof of this can be seen in the success of Rock en Seine, one of the many annual music festivals held in Paris, France. Since 2003 the multi-day festival has hosted many bands and concert-goers alike, quickly becoming one of the most popular cultural activities in the city.

9.Disneyland Resort Paris – Disneyland wasn’t always a cultural attraction in Paris, but it certainly is now. In the Eastern suburbs of France, Disneyland Resort Paris has been operating since 1992 and it has remained one of Europe’s top tourist attractions ever since.

10.Le Zenith – Another testament for their love of live music, Le Zenith is a shared name given to 15 venues located around France, the original of which was founded in Paris in 1983. Ever since then it has remained one of the most enjoyed cultural activities in Paris.

Cité de la musique

This is the Sunday Series, a peek of things in the art music world.

Music has a close bound with architecture for quite some time. Concert halls and opera houses are also the ones which effects the music and also effected by music. These structures are devoted to music, from within them we witness the grow of musical arts.

This series presents the beauty of the structure, in which music creativity flows abundantly.

Bastille Opera or L’Opéra de la Bastille is located in the heart of Paris, at the former location of the historic Bastille Prison which is holds an important role in the rise of modern democracy.

The place was picked because of the original idea about this theater was about establishing a people’s theater, an idea by composer Pierre Boulez, Maurice Béjart, along with Jean Vilar. This house is intended to complement Opera Garnier in the Parisian artistic scene.

The construction took 5 years time, from 1984-1989. It began with the deconstruction of Bastille Train Station and the inauguration took place in July 13th, 1989 as a 2 centuries of Bastille incident at the same day.

Located at the Place de la Bastille, in the 12th arrondissement, the house was designed with 2,723 seats, every one of which has an unrestricted view of the stage. The theatre, was “surmounted by the opaque cube of the stage building and wrapped in gridded walls of glass…… the Opera stands sociably open to the world outside, whereas the foyers, with their broad overview of the city, have the slick, impersonal look of an airport lounge”. Beauvert also describes the theatre’s backstage facilities as being extremely modern, allowing for nine times the volume of the stage and the ability to roll entire sets off and on intact. However, compared to other world-class opera houses, the acoustics have been described as disappointing at best.

Gershwin, Copland, Barber, Adams, Kern…

A tutti “Prosit Neujahr!!!”

Me faire ça… A moi !

My love for Opera National de Paris really knows no bounds, and hopefully having a cheap tour of it

My love for Opera National de Paris really knows no bounds, and hopefully having a cheap tour of it will make you want to spend more than an hour there–say, three perhaps? As I mentioned last week, Charles Garnier envisioned the opera house being a portal to another world. In the 21st Century, however, the opera experience begins far beyond the box office and Grand Staircase. Fortunately, there’s a website for that. In one of the best assembled sites for an opera company I’ve seen, the language barrier is properly dissolved by sumptuous photographs and keen sound-clips (chances are, you’ve heard the music somewhere before as well, like Lakme on a British Airways commercial or Tannhauser and The Ring Cycle in a Bugs Bunny cartoon).

A bit of clarification about the Paris Opera, first. There are two houses: the Garnier (as I wrote up last week) at the Place de l’Opera, and the Bastille (located in, you guessed it, the Bastille district). Nowadays, most operas will be at the Bastille and most ballets at the Garnier, although they have been known to switch it up (those French and their whims). Either way, you’re guaranteed a good show and, if you’re as whimsical as the French can be, a well-priced ticket. Students, those under 25, and seniors over 65 can all queue up at the box office 15 minutes prior to curtain to get hefty discounts on the remaining seats. I’ve always found with this situation that the best thing to do is to grab dinner at a nearby cafe. There are some great rustic places near the Bastille (whose names you’ll just as quickly forget…blame the copious amounts of cheap and good Beaujolais), and if you’re looking for a culinary splurge, you can’t go wrong with Le Grand Cafe near the Opera, though there are also some great cheap eats, including a Cafe Indiana (something about margaritas and Mozart just sounds so right). You can generally gauge how sold out the performance will be by how hectic its surrounding area–and restaurants–are. At an hour prior to curtain (45 minutes until the tickets go on sale), head over to either the Bastille or Garnier and hope for the best.

Or, you can get amazingly cheap seats (like 5 to 15 Euro cheap) in higher up sections. You’ll be with a nice mix of people, from students, international travelers, and die-hard opera/ballet fans who are there. Every. Single. Night. Those are by far the most fun–though slightly batty–people to hang out with as they can give you the real dirt on who’s who and what’s what with this production. On the website, simply click on which performance you want (they’re subdivided into Operas, Ballets, and Concerts) and then click “Reserver On-Line.” From there, you’ll have the option of purchasing in English.

You may also want to consider the opera studio productions–the Hors le Murs–which cap off at 25 Euro and are more intimate affairs. They’re also great opportunities to see young and exciting singers. This season, the productions are Cosi fan Tutte and Le Nozze di Figaro, both by Mozart and both fabulous. Otherwise this year, the schedule includes Tannhauser (Wagner), Alcina (Handel), Wozzeck (Berg), Luisa Miller (Verdi), and The Rake’s Progress (Stravinsky). Ballets on the menu are The Nutcracker, Caligula, and Orphee et Eurydice. Comme c’est genial!

Today we headed to the ritziest part of town. I put my best, Chanel shod foot forward onto Rue Faub

Today we headed to the ritziest part of town. I put my best, Chanel shod foot forward onto Rue Fauburg St Honore – the fanciest shopping street in Paris.

In today’s day and age, actually, globalization took some fun out of shopping. No matter where you go, the shops are mostly the same. There are some gems, however, like the famous Collette, an institution more than a shop. The clothes here are presented on mannequins rather than the racks. Almost no racks are to be found – just the artfully outfitted mannequins. The featured designers that attracted my attention were Comme des Garcons, ever avant-garde, and very cool outfits by YSL , which warrants a trip to Woodbury Commons.

Another highlight was a visit to a miniature mall featuring meticulously restored antiques from the Louis XIX period through Art Nouveau and Art Deco – my personal favorites. This place was like a museum of decorative arts, only everything was for sale. That made it more exciting than a museum – the fact that all those treasures could be had if you had enough money.

Well, the antiques were out of our price range, so we walked to Fouchon where I bought and consumed a piece of art of a cake whose taste matched its looks. It consisted of a caramel and meringue heart surrounded by a perfect semi-globe of chocolate sprinkled with some gold powder for the full measure.

From there we walked to Le Marais for another falafel and, I couldn’t resist, some Middle Eastern type of sugar-covered zeppole that called my name out of another amazing pastry shop painted with frescoes.

But enough said of the gluttonous delights. My soul needed some nourishment too. That was provided by a visit to the Opera Bastille for the performance of L; Elixir d’Amour with the glorious Anna Netrebko in title role. Her tenor-counterpart, however, was not on par. He screwed up Una Furtima Lacrima, not hitting any of the high C’s and even, to my ear, taking a wrong note. But everyone else was wonderful, the production was very nice, rivaling that at the Met in the inclusion of moving vehicles and one live dog. The opera house is modern, minimalist, even austere, but pleasantly unobtrusive, and the acoustics was superb. Even in our nosebleed section, third row from the back, the sound was perfect and the view unobstructed.

Another great day in this great city.

Dirigent: Mory Kante.
