It’s been a year of milestones for Android in the U.S. The number of handsets with the Google-developed software has grown from one to eight. Three of the four major national carriers, including Verizon Wireless, the country’s largest, now offer Android phones. HTC’s Hero and Motorola’s CLIQ have shown how Android supports customization by manufacturers. And the Motorola Droid has marked the debut of Android 2.0.

But now Google itself an even more formidable threat to the Android than Apple or even Microsoft. Growing out of the group that created the Chrome browser, Google’s Chrome OS creates a relatively lightweight layer of hardware management code primarily for the purpose of running one native app, the Chrome browser. While Chrome OS can take advantage of local processing and resources, the OS foregoes local applications, citing a need to preserve speed, security and simplicity.

Nokia, which once relegated Maemo for being fit for “PC-like” mobile experiences, is now more seriously considering integrating the Linux-based OS more deeply into its smartphone offerings. This is because handsets have finally become contextual mobile computers — Android itself is evidence of that.

Run in a virtualized machine, Google’s Chrome OS feels pretty much like Chrome-the-browser–which makes the whole exercise kind of pointless, since it’s a lot harder to install and run a virtualized OS than a browser. But now f0lks are trying Chrome OS as a native, non-virtualized OS, a simple, non-invasive experiment if you install it on a thumb drive you can boot your PC from. Engadget’s Paul Miller has given it a go and is enthusiastic about the OS’s speed and the overall experience. He’s got a quick video review, and links to the BitTorrented copy of the OS you need to try this yourself. (I haven’t yet, but will try to fit it into my busy schedule for the rest of the week: traveling to a turkey-eating location, eating turkey, and resting from eating turkey.)

Google Chrome OS has been finally released by Google as a open source project. Google claims that this new Chrome OS will be the fastest operating system in the world but few people also think that Google OS will face a strong competition since Linux is still around. However, the main advantage of this OS will be the newly developed implementation such as online data saving, faster system start up, high protection level etc.

Key Features of Google Chromium OS

Google Chromium OS will be the faster OS ever. It will load up in 3-4 seconds and will arise the biggest challenge for Microsoft Windows OS which takes about 45-60 seconds to start up.

It will be the next generation OS, with complete focus on internet activities. Google Chrome OS will feature almost everything that a common internet user demands.

Chrome OS will store all user data online, instead of the local hard disk. All user files and data will be stored online for more safety and security purposes.

Since files will be stored online, there will be no data loss in case of Chrome OS crashes. Users can format the system and re-install Chromium OS and all stored data can be recovered from the online storage

.

Google Chromium OS won’t be available for download until the end of next year, but developers can download the Chrome project source code from www.Chromium.org and make their own Chrome OS.

Problem:
Recently Gentoo x86 profile 10.0 pushed x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers version 185.18.36, which made ‘xdm’ launch on my laptop(Dell D630 Latitude) really noisy. First few minutes of X session on my box started to push fan to the limit making it unbearable.

Fix:
Some digging up on the web revealed it is a known Dell bios bug, and has been fixed in upstream. So, the solution is to upgrade bios to latest available version.

Steps to upgrade:
Install ‘libsmbios’:

sudo emerge --sync
sudo emerge libsmbios

…and follow further instructions here: http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Tech/libsmbios_dellBiosUpdate (this page has steps to download updated bios and install it using dellBiosUpdate (a15 is the latest available release at the time of writing, and fixed the problem for me))(Ignore distribution specific instructions).

With the open sourcing of Google Chrome OS as Chromium OS project, people have started building the

With the open sourcing of Google Chrome OS as Chromium OS project, people have started building the OS on their own and a couple of them can be found here and here. I have tried out the build that is available as a torrent mentioned in the TechCrunch article, but could not login to the OS (Network not connected and offline login failed) in neither VMWare nor VirtualBox on a Leopard. However, it logged in fine in VirtualBox on Ubuntu 9.10. The performance though was terribly bad. There is also a USB bootable image available here, which I have not tried out yet.

I have downloaded the Chromium source code and have built the OS image and ran it successfully on both VMWare and VirtualBox. The code is downloaded as a tarball for this build process. If you wish to make changes to the code and contribute, the source should be downloaded using git, in which case, the Chromium depot tools need to be installed as a prerequisite.

What is Chrome OS?

Chrome OS is a lightweight OS designed to be used by netbooks, focused only on the web. It is built on top of the Linux kernel and aims to be faster, simpler and secure.

Built on top of Linux kernel

Faster boot times

Entirely web-based

Minimal user interface

Encrypted storage of all user data in the cloud

Self verification of integrity of OS at every boot

What it is not?

Chrome OS is NOT a replacement for desktop operating systems. You can’t just go and replace your current OS with Chrome OS!

Build Process:

I have done the entire build on my 32 bit Ubuntu 9.10. The image works fine in VirtualBox in the same machine and also on VMWare in a Leopard. The steps in brief are:

Making the local repository

Creating the build environment

Including Chrome browser

Building the platform packages

Building the kernel

Building the final OS image

Converting the image to a VMWare image

Converting the image into a bootable USB disk (optional)

Creating the local repository took about an hour to complete. Other steps are relatively faster; the building of the platform packages and the kernel took 10 minutes each and the final OS image itself took 5 minutes. Conversion into a VMWare image requires qemu. Do a sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm before starting the conversion.

How does it work?

The OS is nothing but a browser, well almost! The OS boots and you have a nice blue screen (no, not the BSOD ) asking for the username and password. A Gmail account is required to login to the OS. The build number below the login screen is unique for each build of the Chromium OS image.

On login, the user is directly taken to the Chrome browser and everything the OS has to offer is available right there. It’s all about the web!

Clicking on the Chrome logo on the top left corner gives you a list of web apps (even Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail). Orkut is missing, but Facebook isn’t Almost all the websites that I use regularly worked fine. Flash too works great without any noticeable problems.

On the downside, command line access sucks (Do Ctrl + Alt + T to access the terminal). Typing ‘exit’ at the command line does not take you back to the browser right away. It never did for me, at least! I always ended up typing ‘exit’ about 4-5 times and suddenly the browser will appear. Also the OS becomes unresponsive in both VMWare and VirtualBox if left unused for a few minutes.

The minimalistic UI seems to be a cautious approach. There are two themes available right now – GTK+ and Classic. The look feel at the moment is not at all good. But we can expect Google (and the Open Source community!) to improve on this in the coming months.

The OS is targeted at those who use computers almost solely for accessing the Internet. It is simple and nicely done. But the performance of the Chrome OS is not satisfactory on a virtual machine. The user interface also needs to improve quite a bit.

Keeping all the data in the cloud could be a double-edged sword with potential paranoid users trying to avoid Chrome OS just for that reason. Google is betting on the fact that the market for net-books will increase in the future and that users who want to connect to the Internet fast would prefer an OS which lets them do that without much difficulties.

I think it was a success – some of my Vietnamese buddies we very happy to attend the event and learn new things.

Generally in Vietnam due to the very easy availability of any software (unlicensed off-course) no-one tries to work with open-source much, they find .NET easier and faster to work with. Any software CD/DVD can be obtained for less than or equal to 1 US Dollar.

So what’s coming next – Barcamp offcourse – mark your calendars for the 13th of December 2009. Register now by clicking this link.

OK, so I managed to break Linux … twice. In a day. The first time was trying to uninstall some

OK, so I managed to break Linux … twice. In a day. The first time was trying to uninstall some fussy sound drivers. The second time I did something with the Terminal which I wasn’t supposed to do.

Then I accidentally deleted the partition while trying to fix it. Aren’t I bright?

Then I had to restore the Windows bootloader using the Windows Recovery Enviroment. It’s included on the Vista disk but if you don’t have it you can still grab it here.

For now, I’m sticking for a virtual machine. But now I know how to partition hard drives, I’ve been looking on creating a recovery partition with some basic apps on it (just ’cause it’s a pain to reinstall Vista when things go wrong.) And somebody told me to try SelfImage. Although I haven’t tried it yet, looks like a nifty tool.

Also, some other things I learned:

There’s a built-in partitioner in Vista. This is very useful. There’s also one on the Windows Vista disc, when you’re installing.

Another trick I learned: You can create a data partition to seperate your files from your system. If you’re really looking at seperation, you can get a second hard drive. An advantage of this is that if your Windows decides its had enough of you, you’ll (hopefully) not lose all your stuff. But make sure to do your backups, folks. If your hard drive bursts into a ball of flames, a second partition isn’t going to help much.

Sergey Brin, one of google founder’s, predicts that Google Chrome (newly arrived in its Google Chrome OS form) and Google’s mobile device OS Android will eventually merge.

Though Google Chrome and Android were developed separately, Brin said he expects the two will become closer and more integrated now both projects are public.

“A subsequent version of Android is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack,” said Brin, suggesting that Android will take advantage of some of Google Chrome’s programming advances.

Brin also suggested that the brand name is likely to change: “My guess is we’ll have ‘Chrome Lite’ or something similar.” Looks like Brin’s planning to take a leaf out of Adobe’s playbook with Flash Lite.

Chrome and Android both use WebKit, an open-source project, at the heart of their browser, so it’s understandable that Google is looking to combine the two.
