New York Times/Frank Rich—AT last the American right and left have one issue they unequivocally agree on: You don’t actually have to read Sarah Palin’s book to have an opinion about it. Last Sunday Liz Cheney praised “Going Rogue” as “well-written” on Fox News even though, by her own account, she had sampled only “parts” of it. On Tuesday, Ana Marie Cox, a correspondent for Air America, belittled the book in The Washington Post while confessing that she couldn’t claim to have “completely” read it.

“Going Rogue” will hardly be the first best seller embraced by millions for talismanic rather than literary ends. And I am not recommending that others follow my example and slog through its 400-plus pages, especially since its supposed revelations have been picked through 24/7 for a week. But sometimes I wonder if anyone has read all of what Palin would call the “dang” thing. Some of the book’s most illuminating tics have been mentioned barely — if at all — by either its fans or foes. Palin is far and away the most important brand in American politics after Barack Obama, and attention must be paid. Those who wishfully think her 15 minutes are up are deluding themselves.

The book’s biggest surprise is Palin’s wide-eyed infatuation with show-business celebrities. You get nearly as much face time with Tina Fey and the cast of “Saturday Night Live” in “Going Rogue” as you do with John McCain. We learn how happy Palin was to receive calls from Bono and Warren Beatty “to share ideas and insights.” We wade through star-struck lists of campaign cameos by Robert Duvall, Jon Voight (who “blew us away”), Naomi Judd, Gary Sinise and Kelsey Grammer, among many others. Then there are the acknowledgments at the book’s end, where Palin reveals that her intimacy with media stars is such that she can air-kiss them on a first-name basis, from Greta to Laura to Rush.

Equally revealing is the one boldfaced name conspicuously left unmentioned in the book: Levi Johnston, the father of Palin’s grandchild. Though Palin and McCain milked him for photo ops at the Republican convention, he is persona non grata now that he’s taking off his campaign wardrobe. Is Johnston’s fledgling porn career the problem, or is it his public threats to strip bare Palin family secrets as well? “She knows what I got on her” is how he put it. In Palin’s interview with Oprah last week, it was questioning about Johnston, not Katie Couric, that made her nervous.

The book’s most frequently dropped names, predictably enough, are the Lord and Ronald Reagan (though not necessarily in that order). Easily the most startling passage in “Going Rogue,” running more than two pages, collates extended excerpts from a prayerful letter Palin wrote to mark the birth of Trig, her child with Down syndrome. This missive’s understandable goal was to reassert Palin’s faith and trust in God. But Palin did not write her letter to God; she wrote the letter from God, assuming His role and voice herself and signing it “Trig’s Creator, Your Heavenly Father.” If I may say so — Oy!

Han pasado ya cosa de un par de años desde que un convenio entre la Universidad de Salamanca y Ediciones Pléyades posibilitó la existencia de Triunfo Digital, de nuevo, como su extinta edición en papel, bajo la dirección de José Ángel Ezcurra. La revista Triunfo se publicó desde 1962 a 1982, primero como semanario cinematográfico, después pasó a la información general y, poco a poco, se fue orientando hacia la política. En Triunfo colaboraron los ya fallecidos Eduardo Haro Tecglen, Luis Carandell y Manuel Vázquez Montalbán; también Diego A. Manrique, Ramón Chao, Andrés Rábago (bajo el seudónimo de Ops, más conocido hoy día como El Roto), Teresa Pàmies o Juan Cruz, entre muchos otros.

En esta nueva versión en Internet se puede encontrar la colección completa de la revista, cerca de mil números, con una opción de búsqueda habilitada por secciones, números, autores o a través de una cronología. Asimismo, se encuentra también digitalizada la revista filial Tiempo de Historia y se prevé para un futuro próximo que esté disponible el que fuera “semanario de humor dentro de lo que cabe” Hermano Lobo. Sirvan estas líneas como testimonio de otra forma de periodismo que fue posible, si bien no rentable.

FINANSIERING. Professorn i transportekonomi, Jan-Erik Nilsson, tycker att min rep­lik indikerar en ovilja att ”pröva något nytt därför att allt redan prövats och det inte finns något att lära”.

Jag menar att en öppenhet för nya idéer är en överlevnadsfråga för kommunerna, men det gäller att noga studera hur dessa nya idéer fungerar och om de kan tillföra något till verksamheten.

Hey its Geoff, Modern Warfare 2 is finally out! (woo!) So here are my thoughts on the game.

Singleplayer: As usual, the singleplayer is brilliant. However, it is slightly shorter than average, and I’m not sure if its just me but something seems to be missing. The action is also slightly overdone and it jsut sorta has to slow down sometimes. Apart from that, the singleplayer is stunning and it has some massive plot twists that are very surprising.

Multiplayer: The multiplayer is absolutely awesome which isn’t at all surprising. The new customization is jsut epic, so many new attachments! And so many more challenges. The customizable killstreaks add so much more fun and flavour into the experience. The silenced shotguns are a bit strange but still fun and the silenced snipers are awesome. The only complaint I have is that its just too easy to get killed or kill some one, like 2 bullets kill someone.

Spec Ops: This great new addition is the final touch to an epic game. It is a new Co-op mode which allows you and a friend, or you on your own to go through a heap of challenges such as surviving waves of enemies, hunting down terrorists, using teamwork to tackle objectives and even a snow mobile race as well as much more. Its an excellent add-on to the game and creates days of fun but it seems that IW could have put in that little bit more.

So basically this is a freakin’ awesome game that looks and plays brilliantly. This and BF:BC2 will take up most of the rest of my next few years. To anyone reading this you should definately get it if you ahvn’t already. There are only minor issues that have little impact on the overall game, so its completly epic. I hope to god they make a third one.

Käisin teisipäeval jälle Vantaal õpetajat asendamas. Kui eelmisel nädalal asendasin Simot, kelle juurde saadetakse tundidest välja visatud korrarikkujad, siis nüüd olin Inkku, kes tegeleb individuaalõppega. Päev algas kell 8.00 kolme 9. klassi tüdrukuga, kellele pidin selgeks tegema funktsiooni mõiste. Kõigepealt vahtisin viis minutit silmad kõõrdis nende matemaatikaõpikut. Ma polnud ammu näinud midagi sellist: f(x) = 1,5x + 3, ja need piffid polnud sellist asja kunagi näinud. Kuidas seda nullist seletada? Soome keeles?! Lõpuks saime siiski päris hästi hakkama, tüdrukud olid (minu eelarvamustest hoolimata) päris nutikad, kuigi suutsid ka „hiilata“. Nad ei osanud peast isegi sellist lihtsat korrutustehet nagu 3×8, rääkimata natuke keerulisemast kirjalikust jagamisest ja korrutamisest. „Me tegime sellist asja viimati 4. klassis ja peale seda hakkasime kalkulaatorit kasutama.“ Harilike murdude korrutamist vaatasid nad ka suu ammuli (see ei ole kirjanduslik liialdus). Muidu olid nad armsad tüdrukud ja nendega veedetud hommikune paaristund andis päevale väga toreda alguse!

Üldse möödus päev väga rahulikult, peamiselt käidi mu juures järeltöösid tegemas, mis tähendas igavat vaikust ja töörahu. Andsin ka ühe tunni rootsi keelt 8. klassile, aga kuna 25-st õpilasest oli kohal vaid 15, sain jälle imelabaselt hakkama. Mind hämmastas, et 8. klassis tõstavad õpilased innukalt kätt ja tahavad vastata. Tavaliselt saab see siirus ja õpihimu otsa hiljemalt 4. klassis. Õpetajad on ikka müstiliselt head tööd teinud! Minule tähendas see kõik tõepoolest „lihtsat raha“, nagu trennikaaslane tööd pakkudes lubas.

Vahetundide ajal käisin õpetajate toas jutte kuulamas ja itsitamas. Ühest 9. klassi beibest (kellega eelmisest nädalast tuttav olen, kui ta koos sõbrannaga matemaatikast välja visati ja minu juurde saadeti), räägiti eriti humoorikalt (ja olgem ausad, alatult).

- Tal on täna eriti nõrk hommik. Ütlesin: „Tee raamat lahti. [õpetaja imiteerib kala nägu] Raa-mat. [imiteerib jälle kala nägu] Silm ka ei pilkunud.“ (kõik irvitavad)

- Tal ongi üks ilme igaks olukorraks. Imestus. [kala nägu] Šokk. [kala nägu] Ülevoolav rõõm. [kala nägu] Muserdav kurbus. [kala nägu]

Ühest küljest on see niiii inetu ja ebaeetiline, aga see tüdruk on oma ülbuse kohta tõesti haruldaselt tuhm. Tõenäoliselt on kõik õpetajad temaga vatti saanud. Mõtlen parem nii, et õpetajate tuba ongi koht, kus auru välja lasta, ja pigem teha seda läbi huumori kui kaevata ja tigetseda. Naer maandab pingeid!

Patrullisin ühe vahetunni koolihoovis ja sattusin peale 8. klassi poistele, kes siseõuel lumepalle tegid. Läksin neid manitsema – „lumepallid on keelatud“ –, aga kutid tulid nii ägeda lahenduse peale, et pidin neid selle eest lausa tunnustama. Nimelt nühkisid nad oma pallid vastu majaseina kandilisteks ja ütlesid, et me loobime siis lumekuubikuid. Need kuubikud nägid krdi lahedad välja! Üksteise pihta ma neil siiski loopida ei lubanud, aga maha ja üle majakatuse võisid nad visata. Pallid maandusidki teisel pool kahekordset koolimaja. Päris hea viskekäsi!

Tulin töölt koju, sõin, mõtlesin teha „väikse uinaku“. Ärkasin uksekella peale 45 minutit enne trenni algust. Vedas, et väiksed trullakad skaudipoisid (nagu filmis Up!) advendikalendrit müütasid, muidu oleksin trenni maha maganud. Ausõna, poisil olid ühes käes kommid ja teises küpsised. Kalender oli kaenlas
