BBC News (11/26, Roberts) reported that University of Buffalo “scientists are testing a radical new theory that multiple sclerosis (MS) is caused by blockages in the veins that drain the brain.” The team was “intrigued by the work of” Paolo Zamboni, MD, “who claims 90% of MS is caused by narrowed veins.” Dr. Zamboni, who “says the restricted drainage, visible on scans, injures the brain leading to MS,” has “already widened the blockages in a handful of patients.” Now, the US investigators are planning “to recruit 1,100 patients with MS and 600 other volunteers as controls who are either healthy or have neurological diseases other than MS.”
MedPage Today (11/27, Smith) reported that instead of being “regarded as an autoimmune disease,” MS “may result from poor vascular circulation in the brain.” According to Dr. Zamboni, “abnormal flow through the azygous and jugular venous systems results in a build-up of iron in the brain. The excess iron damages blood vessels and allows the metal, as well as other substances, to cross the blood-brain barrier.” Pointing out the “immediate clinical implications” of this hypothesis, MedPage Today noted that “if narrowed or obstructed veins are the cause of the condition, people might easily be screened for MS long before symptoms appear,” and that “a simple surgical procedure,” called “a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty,” may “open the veins and perhaps halt or reverse the course of the disease.” http://www.youreyesite.com

The Chicago Tribune (11/27, Shelton) reported that, according to a study published Nov. 27 in the journal Diabetes Care, “diabetes cases will nearly double in the US in the next 25 years and the cost of treating the disease will almost triple.” University of Chicago researchers “found the number of people with diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes will climb from almost 24 million this year to about 44 million in 2034. Over the same period, annual diabetes-related treatment costs are expected to increase from $113 billion to $336 billion in 2007 dollars.”
Bloomberg News (11/27, Waters) reported, “Diabetes prevents people from breaking down sugar in their blood and can lead to complications, including heart disease, kidney disease, vision loss, and amputation of limbs. While some people have an inherited form of the condition, the majority of cases are linked to obesity.”
HealthDay (11/27, Thomas) reported that, besides obesity, another “factor driving the soaring costs” is “the number of people living with diabetes for lengthy periods, the researchers said. Over time, the cost of caring for someone with diabetes tends to rise along with their risk for developing complications, such as end-stage renal disease, which requires dialysis.” Notably, “among Medicare beneficiaries, the number with diabetes is expected to rise from 8.2 million to 14.6 million in 2034, with an accompanying rise in spending from $45 billion to $171 billion.”
“As a result, by 2034, half of all direct spending in diabetes care is projected to occur in the Medicare population,” WebMD (11/27, Boyles) reported. Still, “although little can be done about the aging of the population, much can be done about the other major risk factor for type 2 diabetes — obesity.” MedPage Today (11/27, Gever) and CNN (11/27, Hellerman) also covered the study.

So, I’ll be honest–this blog is probably going to be extremely boring. I’m not on

So, I’ll be honest–this blog is probably going to be extremely boring. I’m not one to write boring blogs, but this one is really being written out of necessity. Now, I could just go ahead and write this out on paper…but since I’m a geek, I figured one online would be more interesting. In addition to that, I figure that, for at least SOME people, it could be informative as well, which is always good.

Here’s my little intro, and a description of my whole ordeal up until this point: Hi, my name is Renae, I’m 20 years old, and I get migraines.

And not just those “oh my god, my head is KILLING me” migraines–I mean, I DO get those–but I get optic migraines as well. Most people don’t know what these are (honestly, neither did I until about 5 months ago), so I’ll explain.

Basically, an optic migraine is kind of what it sounds like–a migraine with your eyes. But the ones that I get (and this is, apparently, how they usually occur) don’t have any pain associated with them. I’ll basically get a horizontal lightning bolt-like flashing in my eyes…kind of like when someone takes a picture of you, and you get the camera flash stuck in your eyes. It makes it so that I can still see, but I can’t focus on words very well, and it lasts for about 15 minutes or so.
If you have a very severe one–which I did, in April of this year–it can even affect your speech.

I work in customer service (doing troubleshooting and taking orders for kitchen appliances over the phone), and in April, I got my first–and so far, only–severe optic migraine.
I had gotten optic migraines before, but only with the flashing in my eyes. I associated it to dehydration, and didn’t really think anything of it. I would just drink a lot of water, and of course, after about 15 minutes, it would go away.
With this one, though, I was in the middle of talking to a customer, taking their order, and I started slurring my speech and mixing up my words and syllables. I was trying to tell them the total of their order, and I just couldn’t get the numbers right. I don’t remember what their actual total was, but, for example, if their total was $56.22, I kept telling them their total was $26.52, or “25. 62″…that sort of thing.
Eventually, I concentrated extremely hard, got their CORRECT total out, and put them on hold…at which point, I proceeded to freak out.
Everything in my head felt okay–I was able to comprehend everything that I was saying and everything that was going on around me–but for some reason, it was like my brain had been rewired, and I couldn’t say out loud what I was thinking inside my head.

After talking to my supervisor, and telling her what was going on, they called the paramedics. By the time they got to my workplace, the optic migraine had ended, so when they checked all of my vitals, nothing seemed out of the ordinary except for an increased heart rate (which is to be expected, granted the circumstances). I opted not to take a ride in the ambulance (which can cost a lot on a medical bill, depending on your insurance), but had my boyfriend pick me up and take me to the ER, just to make sure that I hadn’t had a mini stroke or seizure (or possibly something worse).

The ER doctors examined my eyes, gave me a CAT scan, a basic blood test, and a urinalysis, and the results?

Nothing.

They said that everything came back completely fine, but they suggested that I go see my PCP the next day for a follow-up, which is exactly what I did…and she couldn’t find anything, either (although, I DO have to give her SOME credit–she said she really didn’t know what it was, but that there was a possibility that it was migraines…or a mini seizure).
So she referred me to both an ophthalmologist and a neurologist, and she also told me I should get an MRI done, since a CAT scan isn’t as in-depth as an MRI.
If you’ve ever had a neurologist appointment, you’ll know that it’s not an easy feat to accomplish. You have to schedule the appointment at LEAST a month in advance. So, I wound up getting the MRI the same day I saw my PCP, and saw an ophthalmologist a week or two later.

Results from the ophthalmologist?

Again, nothing. She said I had no disease in my eyes, and couldn’t understand why this had happened to me, but said that I should definitely see a neurologist.

Finally, the neurology appointment came, about 2 months after the whole ordeal started. I go into the office, sit down, and wait for the doctor. She comes in, looks over my MRIs, and tells me that she doesn’t see anything abnormal on them. I described to her the symptoms that I had, and after about two seconds, she told me that I get “complex migraines” (another popular term for “optic migraines”), and proceeded to explain to me what they were.

So, after thousands of dollars in medical bills and two months of thinking I might be dying, I found out that I got migraines.

Needless to say, I was pretty pissed off.

But definitely glad to have an answer.
The neurologist, Dr. Lara Katzin (an extremely nice woman), told me to pay attention to these migraines over the next few months, see if they become more frequent, and she scheduled a follow-up appointment with me.

Which brings me to the reason why I have started this blog.
The follow-up appointment was this past Tuesday (Nov. 24), and yes, I have been getting them (along with traditional headache-like migraines) more frequently. I started out getting them maybe once or twice a month, and now I get them about once or twice a week. Dr. Katzin prescribed a migraine medication to me (don’t know the name of it off the top of my head, and I don’t have the paperwork in front of me…if anyone’s interested to know what it is, just leave me a comment, and I’ll get back to you later), and suggested that I start a “migraine diary,” seeing as optic migraines, like traditional migraines, can be triggered by different things such as lights, sounds, and smells. That way, I can see if there’s something triggering them, so I can possibly control them (and therefore, not have to be on medication).

And, here we are.
My Migraine Diary.

I’ll be documenting each one that I get, and what I was doing at the time, to see if there is any kind of pattern to it.
I figured I would make it public so as to try and help people, like I said before. Because I’m sure that there are people out there who, just like me, get optic migraines, but don’t have any idea what they actually are (which can be pretty terrifying).

If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask–I’m an open book, honestly, and I’ll tell you all that I know!

t2:Echo – by Henry Daniel

Due to the fact that my schedule was quite full this past weekend along with the fact that I get quite severe motion sickness from watching 3D movies, ride films and IMAX movies, I was not able to see most of the presentations that were shown at this year’s Interactive Futures conference at Emily Carr. That being said, the one performance that I was able to see in at least some form was t2:Echo by Henry Daniel.

While I was not able to see the entire performance, due to the fact that the concourse gallery walls that were blocking my seeing most of the actual dancers’ performances. On top of this, I was also helping direct the audience members to their respective locations, facilitating their viewpoints and actively going to get benches for more vertically challenged people to stand on.

By positioning the dancers in two separate yet interlinked locations, the director was able to create a bridge between the performances. This was further articulated by the video coding and processing for telepresence technology that was used to create the concurrent ghosting effect that was seen on the wall of the ECUAD concourse gallery and the main display screen in the IDS Motion Capture studio.

The ghosting effect that was projected onto the concourse gallery wall showed the dual performances and interlaid them onto one another and provided a somewhat random video playback quality as each dancer took centre stage in front of the crowd. They also entered the stage from multiple entry points and once their rotation in each location was complete, they then ran either to or from the concourse gallery and IDS MoCap studio in order to continue their respective performances there.

I have never seen a live dance performance like this before and it was quite the sight to see, as the dancers themselves were able to glide through the space with the greatest of ease and truly encompass it. From what I could see, it was a beautiful and creative bridging of technology and human performance into a multi-faceted co-locative art piece and would enjoy seeing more performances by Henry Daniel and his accompanying dance troupe.

Dr. Alan Cruess, past president of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, “met with BC Health Minister Kevin Falcon and urged him to stop paying doctors to inject Avastin,” asking, “Are we just going to just use whatever the cheapest drug is?” More information click here

I read yesterday that insomniacs are not good at making split decisions, I submit, that may be the truth when looking for places to get an eye exam and glasses.
On Friday, I went to look at glasses with my son who broke his glasses. We went to the Sanford Mall and looked at Vision Works and Lens Crafters and Optical Outlet. I had not been for an exam since three years ago. I declined getting an eye exam that day, the price was under $50 at all places.
When I was going home I heard an ad for 20/20 Eyeglass Super Store and the exam was $39 and I could buy 2 pair of glasses for $149 and the exam was free. When I got home, I made the appointment and figured, what the Hell — $39 bucks and if I don’t like the glasses so what?

So today I drove the 12 miles (one way) to Casselberry at 436 and Red Bug Rd.I saw a dead rat killed on the road and thought, maybe that is a sign that my rats are gone???
The Eyeglass SuperStore looked a bit busy, they were nice and cheerful. I signed like 6 pages of paper work and BUYER BEWARE, READ EVERYTHING BEFORE SIGNING! I completely skimmed over the $20 charge for visual fields, which is hidden in the body of text in the agreement.
The Optometrist was nice, but I have never felt so rushed in my life. Was it thorough? I hope so as my RX seems to have changed for the better on my left eye. Then as soon as he wrote the RX, I was passed off to a nice woman named whose soul focus was to get me to buy glasses. When I saw nothing, she passed me off to another nice woman, well, dumb dumb me should have come early and looked around the store, the place had a lousy selection, Superstore my ass, they should have called it Boring Eyeglass Place. Nothing to compare to LensCrafters in Sanford. I looked at lower price glasses with yellow tags, and nothing of interest at all. The prices for glasses by themselves seemed high! We wandered shelf to shelf, I looked at the higher priced frames, but there was nothing great about them either. The woman kept insisting we would find something, taking me around, and around and even brought out a few things from the back that looked like duplicates from the front. I wondered if their pay was made on commission.
It was when I asked about just using my old frames and getting lens put in them that she told me the deal about that $20 charge and I should pick out two new frames and get them covered under warranty. I was really getting steamed, and dizzy it was a rip off for that extra $20 bucks as that could have gone to gas up the truck!
There were no cool glasses that I even considered. I kept wanting to bolt! Finally I said to just let me pay and get out of there. That even took another ten minutes of paperwork.
SO LESSON FOR SUNDAY – if you want a cheap eye exam you know is thorough, first, find an Ophthalmologist, if not, make up your mind and chance the local optometrists, I know my last Optometrist at Optical Outlet was great. Now maybe this exam was fine, but I almost feel like I want a second opinion.
AT 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, I was cattle pushed into a feed line, then it was pressure pressure pressure to buy new frames. I would never go back there again, I will go to my Sanford vision store and look at frames or re-doing my old pairs. 20/20 sure did not work for me, wasted gas, wasted time, wasted money on a procedure that took 4 minutes top and was $1o more than had I gone 2 miles to the Seminole Town Center Mall.
And that’s Sunday so far, I’m going fishing to relax, it’s my SOMA…
P/S, another bad split second decision was stopping by Burger King 17/92 near 434, I had to get onion rings after seeing the 99cent coupon in the paper for Steak and Shake. I got them to go and they tasted like leftover rings from Saturday. You can see I ate them anyway. Now do I dare go fishing, it look likes it might storm? If you don’t see anymore blogs, that split decision might have been a lightning rod…

After do some research for a compact camera which have big zoom I decided to buy this camera because of my budget, certainly I am pleased with my decision I took 160 picture during our holiday and few movies shoot and please with the results, easy to use as well. Even with the 10x zoom it is very clear and even taking picture from moving car. Great camera, great price, great result. It is a star
