Alit in a golden chalice
fashioned for eating soft-boiled eggs with spoons
We were lifted,
and ascended with pluck
through a dense snowfall of
popcorn

The night sky rippling thoughtful
and down below us
the oil-slicked slopes
of the Popcorn Mountains
inlaid with magenta flame.

All about us, circumscribed
several circles spoke
in flat coloured announcements

green says, “Look to your left,
the hour is approaching!”
and blue does a dance of dimensions
We are thrilled when the circle in the colour of freshly cut melon remarks
on the seismic situation below,
though it kindly includes
that it, “Is not an adequately trained Vulcanist.”

Small explosions startle
the embossed designs
on our mug, rubbed ‘cross with light.
We hold the reins closely,
attending them.

As the wind picks up, “I believe
the circles can dilate!” I shout
backwards at the transcribers
furiously moving through
stacks of alternately-folded
red circuit board for the
manner of correlation and
the corresponding heft.

“Also who pays you?” I manage,
before all questions are extinguished
like small frog mist in this
low-lighted, Nebular land.

[Along the trajectory of current and future action: ]
We break all the chandeliers,
KILL ALL THE IDOLS;
make way for a silver ray
(somewhat coincidentally)
puked
(or in other words)
emitted vaingloriously
from the mouth of one short, soft
and blissfully acute puppy.
[NAMETAG: St. George the Apocalypto, Lightning Bolt-Shooting. DATE: July 17th, 2008; Lower Brule, South Dakota. ]
In a widening plane, this ray slices
an unquenchable cosmic swath.

“This will go down on the permanent record,”
our wry hypothesis,
“But, of course, it is only a control experiment.”
Sending fibrous
glass shards twinkling
earthwards.

“First things first,” (lip-reading, as it is loud with winds)
muttered to the pulling-out of a dictation notebook,
“Thin Dust of The Universe. Color? Green.”

MGMT released Oracular Spectacular back in October of 2007, the album featured the hits Time to Pretend, Electric Feel and Kids. It was the first major label studio album from the Brooklyn duo, who upon release of the album immediately drew comparisons to earlier 80’s New Wave synth-groups such as a personal favorite of mine New Order. The video for Kids, directed by Ray Tintori was recently released to the masses earlier this month and is as awesome as it is disturbing. What I like is the whole concept of the video itself, yo Lex! don’t this kinda remind you of They Live? (http://hulkhatetimetravel.com/2009/01/29/they-live/)

A few of my friends were curious about my blog name, so I am going to use this post to clarify.

sib⋅yl
sib·yl (sĭb’əl)
n.

   1. One of a number of women regarded as oracles or prophets by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
2. A woman prophet.

[Middle English sibile, from Old French, from Latin Sibylla, from Greek Sibulla.]

The name of my blog is ‘Sibyl Eyes’. This has several meanings, as well as being a play on words.

First it is an ode to my favorite writer, Philip K Dick, who wrote an autobiographical short story called “The Eye of the Sibyl”, one the first pieces written after his infamous VALIS experience. The short story pinpoints the moment Phil decided his fate as a sci-fi writer.

Now for some historical background, there were many sibyls, the most famous of which was the Cumaean Sibyl who assisted Aeneas in his descent to the underworld. In the Aeneid, written at the close of the first century BC, Virgil names Cumae as a place where Daedalus, flying from Crete, built a temple to Apollo, and where he later dedicated his wings. Virgil also describes the sibyls sanctuary as a labyrinthine network of caves.

Although she was a mortal, the Cumaean Sibyl lived about a thousand years. The story goes that Apollo offered to grant her a wish in exchange for her virginity, so she took a handful of sand and asked to live for as many years as the grains of sand she held. Later, after she refused his love, she withered away because she forgot to ask for eternal youth. Her body grew smaller with age, eventually being kept in a jar until only her voice was left.

A verse about the Sibyl by the great poet Virgil:

“At last the Final Time announced by the Sibyl will arrive:
The procession of ages turns to its origin.
The Virgin returns and Saturn reigns as before;
A new race from heaven on high descends.
Goddess of Birth, smile on the newborn baby,
In whose time the Iron Prison will fall to ruin
And a golden race arises everywhere.
Apollo, the rightful king, is restored!“

The sibyl is a wild haired woman possessed by ecstatic visions of the future. She is a vessel for the oracular god Apollo, who whispers softly in her ear, the echo of a thousand voices vibrating through her cave.

Time is cyclical and history repeats. The Sibyl knows this. I hear her in my dreams and now she’s breaking into waking life. When once I used to resist for fear of madness, I now allow, becoming a channel for her voice, the artist of her visions.

The eyes of the Sibyl see the future and the past superimposed on one plane. This is the “time outside of time”, the shamanic Dreamtime.

Oh my friends, what a joy! For it is that TIME again. We’re at the bridge between the old world and the new, the chrysalis, the Great Transition.

And with this I shall coin the word “sibylize” to give a name to this act of invoking the Sibyl, which has been misunderstood as madness before we learned to decipher and understand.

Today the Sibyl is a voice that flows through all of us, echoing through the labyrinthine caverns of the internet, using the world wide web as her medium of choice…

Just listened to the album “Oracular Spectacular.” My favorite song, “Electric Feel,” is nearly perfect. Only a truly skilled group is able to create such a perfect mix of electronic and pop. And to make it even better, it’s Indie Rock. Though I’m still in love with the relatively new Fleet Foxes, I will still listen to this album. It’s the kind of album that’s easy to listen to.

Very nice. Considering it’s been such an underwhelming year, this was a definite breath of fresh air. In an era of album after album of one pathetic guy or another deeming it necessary to spew his insincere pseudosuicidal thoughts through my speakers (newsflash: Kurt Cobain is dead and no you are not he. Get over it), an album based on the theme of innocence and childhood is a pleasant surprise indeed. They deserve the attention they are getting; can’t wait to hear what’s next for these guys.

The album is by no means perfect, but I’ll take a failed experiment over impeccable mediocrity any day of the week.

Oracular Spectacular is an introspective album, looking back at childhood and aspects of youth, and the realisation of eventually having to grow old and enter the ‘real world’. By no means is this a concept album, there’s no story to tell, but there’s a link between many of the songs, such as ‘Time To Pretend’, ‘The Youth’ and ‘The Handshake’ that ties into this progression through life. Placing poignant messages aside however, is the music up to scratch as well? The album’s opener, and lead single for the album, ‘Time To Pretend’ is a cacophony of contrasting synthesisers, thundering and twee at the same times, and an off-beat drum beat, that meld into one seamless whole with the vocals, leading to a potential candidate for single of the year.

The energy present in the opener is felt in other songs such as ‘Electric Feel’, a disco-esque stomper, and ‘Kids’, another blast of electronic melancholy. In other songs, conventional instruments come into play, ‘Weekend Warriors’ is a semi-psychedelic trip to the mock battles most of us played when we were younger, and the sound of ‘Pieces of What’ harks back to the sound of classic rock musicians, such as Roy Orbison or Buddy Holly, whilst still sounding modern and up-to-date.

However, there some low-points to the album, the album closer ‘Future Reflections’ is somewhat of a letdown after the vibrant energy that precedes it, and ‘Of Moons, Birds & Monsters’ feels rather like filler content than anything else. Overall though, the album is a worthy purchase as both a pop and an goatee-stroker purchase, which almost never fails to impress.

Song To Download: Time To Pretend

Song To Skip Past: Of Moons, Birds & Monsters

Overall Score: 8/10
