HOWARD MARKS

Who better to fit the bill for a night of scary antics but none other than the myth, the legend that is HOWARD MARKS….. Too young to understand, then why not check the mans past via the trailor from the film dedicatated to his life entitled Mr. Nice

Well now, smuggling drugs back in the day isn’t the only talent “Mr. Nice” has, he can also rock the decks with a set of dub step which’ll blow your mind!! SOO HALLOOOOWEEEEN it’s quite literally scary!!!

Howard’s musical career, which was kick-started in 1996 by the Super Furry Animals’ track ‘Hanging With Howard Marks’, has flourished. He is a regular on the DJ circuit currently favouring the Dub Step sound but describing his own style as ‘stoned eclectic’. He launched a label ‘Bothered’ in the late 90s that featured material from Shaun Ryder, Stereophonics and a plethora of new bands. He still has several boxes of unsold CDs in his garage. He has played at Manumission, remixed tracks for Super Furry Animals, performed a spoken word track with Freebass, collaborated with Mick Jones and Tony James’ latest project Carbon/Silicon and compiled ‘Mr Nice – A Musical Trip With Howard Marks ‘ an album of his favourite music. He has also taken part in spoken word tours with erstwhile New Order bassist Peter Hook and Kav Sandhu from the Happy Mondays.

Megan, guest blogger for Freeworld Design Centre, had a few things to say about orange on the FDC blog last week. (And while we’re on the topic, you can follow more of Megan’s beautiful vision on her blog – Dressed by Style.)

Gotta say, I’m with Megan on the orange thing. I like orange. Like it a lot. It surprised me in a big way when I painted my bathroom ceiling (below) orange. Orange is the best, juiciest bang for your paint buck. And Megan is right – a little goes a long way. But it wasn’t easy. I had to be talked into this act of bravery. After buying the paint, I tried to chicken out more than once. Elle Decoration needed to shoot a bathroom and it had to be bont. Kelly Berman and Laureen Rossouw talked me out of chickening. I’m glad they did.

This room proves it’s all about the details, look how the cushion is criss-cross tied to the bench….

The straight lines of these shelves, draw the eye out, making the room appear much wider. Love the soft sherbert orange on the walls…and with the white accessories it looks fabulous.

Just adore that luna console, it’s modern and Baroque traditional all at once and gets my mind rolling on a DIY. While this color has a lot more pink to it, it’s warm enough to make the orange roundup….it actually strikes me as Honeysuckle our beloved 2011 color of the year.

Italian dressing room. Just beautiful, every aspect of it.

This headboard is unique, functional and sexy. Really like the Morrocan vibe this room radiates.

Well it’s been pretty gray and rainy here in London since my arrival, so I have been craving some bright and cheerful colours. I’ve not always been a fan of orange, but I’ve been coming around to the warm colour… especially when it’s paired with a cool, yummy turquoise (my obsession rears it’s head again). Here are some inspiration pics if you’re thinking about trying this colour scheme in your own pad. You’ll notice that all of these pictures have hits of the two colours, among a more neutral background. This is great because it provides that pop of colour without being overwhelming.

I did this almost a year ago during the PR module of my final year at University. I stumbled across it whilst trawling through my increasingly cluttered computer and thought I’d share it with you guys because I actually quite like the finished image. At that point, I had only recently bought InDesign and Photoshop, so this was really the culmination of an extremely long-winded learning process for me. But hey, I noticed the blog is becoming rather text heavy, so I’ll let this one speak for itself.

ven though it will probably rain, we are going to the Cape this weekend. Despite the dreary weather, when you step into (or even just glimpse) my younger son’s bedroom, you can’t help but feel invigorated. In celebration of his favorite color, today’s post is all about orange.

The color’s made quite a comeback since the ’70s. (We had an orange and white shiny vinyl booth in our kitchen when I was in elementary school, to match the orange and gold oversize plaid wallpaper. Wish I had photos!) In the ’80s, orange was seen only in Burger Kings. (The color supposedly incites hunger.) These days, orange is considered hip, and is especially popular for kid’s rooms.

I wasn’t being purposefully trendy. My son declared orange his fave shade when he was about three and grabbed an orange mug in a housewares shop, and wouldn’t let go. I don’t know how long it will last (he’s seven now), but in the meantime, it’s definitely his signature shade.

Here are a handful of other spaces outfitted in orange:

If you’re an assiduous reader of this blog, the name Ben Westbeech will sound familiar, or at

If you’re an assiduous reader of this blog, the name Ben Westbeech will sound familiar, or at least his music. As soon as his single “So good today” went out on Brownswood, it was on my player. A winner track introduced by Gilles Peterson, the kind of track that would pop up in my mind at any time “I feel so good today even though I can’t find my way…”, putting back a smile on my face, relativizing temporary anger. A myriad of remixes followed the release of this single, from artists such as Osunlade and the greatest DJs played that track, you’ve probably heard it on some dancefloor (Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson, Grant Nelson, me …). A few months after the album “Welcome to the best years of your life” came out. Ben Westbeech has his own sound, it’s a bit hard to say exactly in which genre he is, it is a mix of funk, drum ‘n bass, jazz. It’s a bit like Mike Skinner from The Streets, having this drum ;n bass background and doing something else with it but you can still feel this in the beat. Sometimes it sounds like Jamiroquai at its best, very dancy, upbeat. And the album also contains more relaxed songs such as Beauty, Nothing else, Taken away from. Check his myspace or some video clips on youtube. The concert took place at Orange Rooms. I knew I would like that place even before I cam to Southampton, just knowing that Gilles Peterson had player there. And Naturally Ben Westbeech played that as well. That’s a nice place to check if you’re in Soton. And the great thing about this place (or concerts in England in general) is the entrance fee, only £ 3 !! Amazing, when you think that such a concert would at least be £ 12 in Copenhagen, they do have a music culture here.I don’t know if the concert would have been longer in CPH but it was a bit short to me, or time ran fast, I don’t know. Ben Westbeech is definitely worth seeing live, try to catch him at some festival next time, especially if he’s back with a more “dance” album. The disappointment of the concert was the absence of encore**, for some reasons the musicians didn’t show up again, they just left and so did the audience. Despite a woman trying to cheer the crowd to ask the band back, nothing happened .. I wanted more.Stay tuned, interview coming soon.**encore: comes from the French word encore = again. Funnily enough this word is not used in that sense in French, they would use bis, rappel but certainly not encore. Strange how languages evolve.
