Took me a while to get this mix done, roughly 2 years ago from now – Lots of “pop” accapellas over heavy bassline wobble, but i think it helped to make the overall mix feel more accessible to non-nerds (such as yourself of course!)

Despite being recorded in the Autumn of 2008, this mix smacks of Summer Fun – a funky selection of wobblers & old skool hip hop classics – I never bothered to record a tracklist for this one, but its largely comprised with the likes of A-Skillz, Krafty Kuts, and their series of “Insane Bangers” bootlegs.

In all honesty, this is the sort of mix I enjoy recording the most – hopping between genres & musical styles often seems a lot more stimulating than just sticking to one tempo for an hour.

So, this is The House Of Symphony – the Intro comes from a notorious audio clip of former Doctor Who Tom Baker’s irascible rant when recording a radio ad. It’s actually really funny, and you can listen to it here.

Beyond that we have some old skool rave, a grime instrumental, a breaks bootleg, a top-ten troubling Chems track (that always sounded like them trying to be Timberlake to me), some fidget house, some b’more, disco house, techno, dubstep and a final drum and bass track . . . like I said, a pretty broad selection, and hopefully a lot of head noddin, booty shakin fun.

Hello, and if its another Friday, it must be another trawl through the vaults of my old dj mix collection.

This week its a banging electro house session which was coincidentally my first ever entirely serato-based mix (prior to this, I had always clung onto legitimate vinyl on one deck, like a beginner swimmer clasping at their flotation aid).

I might also add the first few tunes are all hip-hop bootleg type booty shaking stuff, so ought to go down well with the more casual listener & head nodders.

Theres an audio sample which introduces this mix from a fascinating Horizons BBC2 documentary about The Singularity .  Beyond that, there should be plenty of breakdowns to keep you happy on this glorious barbeque-tastic weekend.

Also, it’s quite fascinating to look at the tracklist now from a 4 year old mix and see what has happened to those artists in the time since: some have disappeared, some have gone on to be massive pop acts, or darlings of the underground, and in the Chemical Brothers case, have remained largely unchanged..

One of my older mixes this week, which I only know because I had to record the mp3 from the original Minidisc recording, (and thus must have been recorded around the same time as the Chill Out Mix I posted a few weeks back).

So, Big Beat begat Nu Skool Breaks, which of course is now known simply as Breaks.. This was recorded around that time: the Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Wall of Sound, Concrete Records, etc etc etc.    There was a brilliant compilation album around that time called Brit Hop & Amyl House which pretty much nailed what this sound was – essentially it was the moment when Mo Wax & Ninjatune style trip hop beats shuffled over to the dancefloor, put on some shiny techno-trousers, picked up a 303 and started making acid breakbeat that you could frug your stuff to.

With regards to the Star Wars references – I can tell you in all honesty that i had my Stereo VCR (hi-tech!) plugged into my Ecler Mac 60 mixer back then, and was cueing the VHS tapes of Star Wars & Empire, ready to hit Play at the relevant times. God, that makes me feel like a real old fart when I remember stuff like that: nowadays kids probably just think of the clips they want to play and the bluetooth chip lodged in their brain activates the iPhone app or something. I remember when all this was fields and you could only get the internet in black and white for half an hour on a Thursday, don’t you know….

Anyway, a fun uptempo mix that might well suit a nice stretch of open road with the windows wound down. Watch out for the light sabers.

Dipping into the Jim’ll-Fix-It lucky dip bag this week, it appears the latest Retrocast mix is that of some properly banging gabber & acid techno, so somewhat of a departure from last week’s Funky Breakbeats mix!

If I recall correctly, most of this mix is comprised from Outcast Clan & Total Output records which I bought from a lovely old lady with bleached dreadlocks somewhere in the belly of  Turnmills around the mid 90s. No idea where these people could be found in this day & age, although I suspect that “the back of a lived-in ex ambulance, somewhere between Rotterdam and a mediterranean beach” wouldn’t seem unlikely – either that, or they’ve cashed in all their trust funds and have finally followed Father into the Business. (joke!)

So yea, not the most relaxing mix this week, but as with all of these Retrospective mixes, a time, a place, a transient moment, a memory.

Around the time I recorded this, it was a set routine to play for the delightful chaps at Keep Up and their regular night of anything-goes musical fun & frivolity at the White Horse in Brixton. . . if you’re in South London, it’s always worth a visit.

I enjoyed myself so much doing the previous RoboSuite mix that I figured i’d make use of a rare day off work, and do a follow-up whilst the creatives juices are still flowing..

As the name might suggest, this another mix of UK Funky / World Bass influenced tunes, but with a slightly “deeper” feel than the last one – put simply: Less Bangers, More Vocals.

Clocks in at just over an hour, so perfect to soundtrack your commute tomorrow im sure. Enjoy!

One of my oldest mixes that I’m still in possession of – so old in fact that it was recorded to MiniDisc. I think i was about 21 when I did this, so..er.. 12 years ago would have been 1998. Golly!

Having always adhered very strictly to the beat-matching approach to mixing, it was around this time that djs like Coldcut and DJ Food opened my eyes & ears to the idea of mixing contexts rather than just 4/4s.

Anyway, that’s all immaterial – here’s a selection of late 90s chill out & ambient tunes – indeed a number of my favourite tunes ever (Trans Fatty Acid) are in here, and there’s a fair few which are so well played now it might even be a pleasant surprise to hear them anew after a decade or so.

Welcome to the latest dusting off of my archive of mixes.

This time, it’s a dark, brooding drum and bass mix comprised entirely out of tracks by Noisia . .

Aeons ago I used to primarily play drum & bass when I dj’ed out – from jungle to jump up & tech step, I loved the energy and the sound, but inevitably (as these things are) I found the music got repetitive, derivative, and fell out of love with it.

So, after a self-imposed exile from the 170bpm sound for about ten years, I stumbled upon these chaps and was frankly bowled over by how dense and brooding their sound is. . .  Around that time I was involved in a Christmas mix swap, so thought it’d be appropriate to contradict the inevitable slew of toe-warming musical good cheer with a fat slab of angry, angular, stomping nastiness.

Week 3 of the retrocast wherein I dig through my old mixes, and this week it’s a Valentines’ special . .  Without wanting to get all prog rock / concept album, there’s a storyline woven through these tracks, on that echoes The Bard’s sentiments on the course of true love. Give yourself a gold star if you can follow it successfully.

Also, as a bonus Easter Egg, you get to hear Maggie Thatcher’s opinion of Snoop Dogg, and if you like, you can try and spot which tunes are from movie soundtracks (clue: several)

“More of a blended assortment for this month’s mix, rather than the usual bpm-related assemblage . .

As we all know, February is the time of  Valentines, when young romantics get to send obscene sexual demands to each other cloaked in anonymity.

To that end, i figured i’d put together a bit of a selection exploring various amorous themes. If you’re lucky, it might make you feel all warm and snuggly inside, then a little bit bitter and resentful, before easing into a final euphoric joy.  Failing that, you might just enjoy a selection of largely relaxed tunes that aren’t too cloying and twee.

Welcome to the 2nd weekly instalment of my Retrocast series, wherein I blow away the cobwebs and dust off some old mixes of mine to see if the fan belt under the hood is still useable.

Cor blimey – 2004 may have only been 6 years ago, but in many senses to me it was another lifetime…

Most significantly for this particular mix, this was an all-vinyl effort from my pre-Serato days.  Having convinced myself I was getting old, I’d spent the previous couple of years wallowing in droopy old trip hop, so this was a bit of fun rediscovering how to dance, and in the process, blow large amounts of money in record stores across London.
