Alles begann mit Sputnik 1- dem ersten Erdsatelliten der Geschichte. Am 4. Oktober im Jahre 1957 begann ihre Reise zu einer höheren Umlaufbahn und diese läutete ein Umdenken in der Welt ein. Der Start der Sputnik war ein historisches Ereignis, das Politik, Gesellschaft und Wissenschaften beeinflusste. Das Wort „Weltraumtechnik“ fand nun endlich Beachtung und Schulen und Universitäten begannen Fächer wie Astronomie, Elektrotechnik in Luft- und Raumfahrt und neue Ingenieurwissenschaften intensiver als je zuvor zu behandeln. So wurden im Laufe der Zeit viele Satelliten in den Orbit geschickt und sie alle hatten und haben noch ihre spezifischen Aufgabenfelder, wie zum Beispiel Nachrichtensatelliten, Fernsehsatelliten, Forschungssatelliten und Kommunikationssatelliten, um nur einige wenige zu nennen.

Allein zum Ende der 1960er gab es bereits annähernd 2000 Satelliten, die sich auf einer Umlaufbahn um die Erde befanden. Im Jahre 2009 bereits ca. 18.500, von denen aber nicht alle aktiv sind und einige tausend auch als „Weltraummüll“ bezeichnet werden. Ein künstlicher Satellit bewegt sich ähnlich wie der Mond, den man auch als natürlichen Erdsatelliten bezeichnet, meist auf einer fast elliptischen Bahn um die Erde und ermöglicht einen Datentransfer zwischen weit entfernten Sendestationen. Es gibt aber auch ortsfeste Satelliten, die jedoch in einem großen Abstand platziert werden, um nicht wie Spionagesatelliten, die oft sehr erdnah eingesetzt werden, durch Reibung mit der Atmosphäre beschädigt zu werden. Manche Satelliten umkreisen unsere Erde nur ein paar Wochen, andere können sogar tausende von Jahren im Orbit verbleiben. Dabei hängt ihre Lebensdauer von ihrer Nähe zur Erde ab. Die Internationale Raumstation befindet sich daher in 400 km Entfernung zu uns. Um einen einfachen Datenaustausch zwischen zum Beispiel zwei Orten zu ermöglichen erfordert es einen Satelliten und zwei Bodenstationen, die mit Antennen ausgestattet sind, welche senden und empfangen können. Der Satellit empfängt dann von der ersten Bodenstation ein moduliertes Signal, dessen Frequenz stark genug sein muss, um die Entfernung zu überwinden und sendet dieses weiter an die zweite Station, das dieses empfängt. Erst durch die Modulation wird eine Empfängerabstimmung möglich. Dabei wird einer elektromagnetischen Welle mit einer bestimmten Hochfrequenz zum Beispiel eine Ton- oder Bildfrequenz aufgeprägt. So kann man auch im Urlaub in Japan das Fernsehprogramm aus dem Heimatland verfolgen oder der Mutter in Stuttgart während einer Geschäftsreise in Dubai zum Muttertag gratulieren.Und die Welt wird zum Dorf. Die Hertz-Bereiche in denen unsere heutige Kommunikation stattfindet sind sehr verschiedenen.

Während bei Radioübertragungen eher kleine Frequenzbereich in Frage kommen, können bei wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen viel hochfrequentere, d.h. schnellere und intensivere Frequenzen eingesetzt werden. Dabei spielt unter anderem die Wellenmechanik eine große Rolle. Satellitentechnik ist aber gar nicht so kompliziert wie man denkt. Ein Beispiel: Wir betrachten ein Objekt, sagen wir einen Apfel. Er erscheint und rund und rotglänzend. Das kommt daher, weil seine biomolekulare Substanz auf Lichteinfluss mit einer Reflexion in einer bestimmten Wellenlänge reagiert. Wir empfangen diese Wellen und ordnen ihrer Wellenlänge eine bestimmte Farbe zu. In unserer Welt ist der Apfel rot. Wir haben seine Farbe oder besser gesagt seine Wellenlänge so definiert. Das gleiche macht der Geosatellit mit Hilfe der Radartechnik- er empfängt zum Beispiel Wärmebilder oder er sendet einen Laserstrahl auf einen Ortsteil und berechnet durch die entstehende Reflexion den Abstand, der zwischen Satellit und Ortspunkten vorliegt. Wenn genug Daten gesammelt werden, kann man durch Computerprogramme die neuesten Veränderungen auf der Weltkarte durch Diagramme verfolgen. Eins ist klar- unsere Erde wäre nicht die unsere Erde, gäbe es keinen Satelliten. Sie sind die Knotenpunkte unserer Informationsgesellschaft und haben den Fortschritt unserer Kommunikation ermöglicht, der heute unser Leben bestimmt. Sie beeinflussen maßgeblich das Gesicht unserer Zivilisation und den Verlauf der Globalisierung mit, indem sie die Türen der Welt öffnen und Menschen verbinden.

The space shuttle Atlantis and the International Space Station are separately flying around the Earth until Friday, and they can be seen as a pair of bright lights in the sky at certain times over the next few days.

Atlantis undocked from the space station early Wednesday, ending a week-long stay to supply the outpost with spare parts. The shuttle is scheduled to land at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. on Friday morning at 9:44 a.m. EST (1444 GMT).

I reworked the signage and textures on this ship the other day.  I like the way my most recent Enterprise model turned out, so I redid the textures for my “Phase II” Constitution-class to match the textures for the TOS Enterprise.  After all, I figure this is a Constitution-class variation from the 2260s, possibly built a few years before the refit of the Enterprise for TMP, and before they’d completely worked out the ConstitutionII-class (or Enterprise-class, if you prefer) from the movies.  Anywho, I finally got around to rendering some images of it yesterday.  I’ve always been a fan of this design, which is why I had to build one a few years ago. 

You have schoolwork, homework, chores, practice schedules, and all sorts of tasks in a given day—accomplishing them all could be, well, exhausting.  Sometimes, just thinking about them can cause a splitting headache, especially when you’re at a lost about which task to do first.

If you often encounter this problem our story on the next generation GSP (global positioning system) devices might be of help.  These devices make use of satellite technology to precisely locate any given position on the earth’s surface. 

To do this, the system not only hones into the requested location but keeps track of a number satellites whose data are relevant to the request.  Just imagine:  the satellites orbit Earth as Earth moves around the Sun while turning around its axis.  The number crunching alone is mind-boggling, yet the system works.  Why?  Because as the term GSP suggests, it is a system.

A system is a “unified” group of different interacting elements.  In a broader sense, these elements are organized in such a way that the whole group “works.”  Planetary systems, air-conditioning systems, and ecosystems are just some of the other systems we’re all familiar with. 

Getting back to everyday stuff, you can devise a system for just about any task you find difficult.  In fact, you can systematize all you need to do in any given period to accomplish each task in the best possible way.

For the orbiting moons of planet fashion, it is not about clothes or accessories or designers or trends. It is about a single all encompassing entity – themselves. They want you to look at them. They want you to believe that they are part of it, that they belong, that chic coolness is them, emanates from them.

Regular readers may remember a blog post I once wrote about fashion. My friend Rachel and her friend Jodie broke down my argument and academicised it with incisions and observations so sharp it changed my whole view of the industry. Suddenly there was so much depth, so much beyond Shoreditch. It wasn’t “look at me” it was look at how much influence this has. It is poetry and fiction, art and sculpture, business and money.

And that makes it so infuriating that those on the outskirts, those in the suburbs of fashion, demand such a central place in the overall picture. For they are such an unrepresentative faction. Unwilling to work to understand fashion, they instead try to be fashion – both through the ridiculous things they wear to grab attention and the vacuous, shallow things they choose to say. Every cell in their body is trying to prove that they are fashion, completely missing the fact that to be something you must understand it.

They wear the clothes, but what do they actually know about why that material was used, who brought it into prominence for clothing, what it’s provenance is, how it crossed into casual wear, how it got to the high street, what the cultural significance of it is?

I say ask them. What’s the 3D glasses about mate?

The annual Leonid Meteor Shower will peak in the early hours Tuesday, November 17.

The best place to watch it is in Asia, but North American observers should have an above average viewing, weather permitting. To see the best chance, head outside between 1 a.m. and dawn. NASA is predicting 20-30 metors per hour can be seen in America. The Leonids puts on a great show every year and this year the moon is near its new phase so it should not interfere in viewing.

The Leonids are created by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which passes through the inner solar system every 33 years on its orbit around the sun. Each time by, it leaves a new river of debris, mostly bits of ice and rock no bigger than a sand grain but a few the size of a pea or marble. Over time, these cosmic streams spread out, so predicting exactly what will happen is difficult, but Earth usually plows into the debris, the pieces hit the atmosphere and vaporize, creating sometimes dramatic streaks of light and the occasional fireball with a smoky-looking trail that can remain visible for several minutes.

Z kolei reklama gumy Mentos  czyhała na przechodniów na samym chodniku. Przy kratkach wentylacyjnych metra umieszczono zdjęcia ludzi  żujących gumę. Powietrze wydostające się z przewodów wentylacyjnych nadmuchiwało pokaźnych rozmiarów, wściekle różowy balon z tejże gumy. Bardzo pomysłowa i zabawna forma reklamy. Sami zobaczcie:

That is, I think it’s Rhea and Enceladus in this image. It’s hard to tell for sure from this distance. (Cassini was over 1.2 million miles from Saturn when this was shot.) If anyone knows for sure, I’m open to correction.

I added some detail here that was not in the original raw image; the clouds visible in Saturn’s atmosphere are taken from another image, shot the previous day from a similar angle but with less exposure.

I am assuming the smaller moon is Enceladus based upon its apparent size, location and brightness…covered in ice, Enceladus is one of the most reflective worlds in the solar system.
