Captivity is about separation and exclusion. It is about the destruction of families and communities. For wild caught animals, many watch their parents and family killed in front of them at a young age so that they won’t be able to put up a fight to defend them from capture. For the animals bred in captivity at Marineland, those parents routinely watch as their offspring suffer and die in infancy.

There are no heart warming stories at Marineland, Niagara Falls, Canada. There are endless sad stories, but none may be more pressing and sad than that of Kiska. Marineland’s last remaining Orca, Kiska was wild caught from Iceland in the 1980’s. At Marineland, Kiska is the longest serving resident and she has seen dozens of Orcas come and go – and estimated 14 other Orcas die. Of those 14, 5 of them have been her own children. Since the removal of Ikaika back to SeaWorld she has spent her days alone. Ex-trainers have spoken publicly about their concern for her and Marineland itself have gone on public legal record establishing their concern for the health of their lone Orca held in solitary. (Source)

Kiska’s story is the story of captivity. She has survived, but at what cost? Her life has been painfully sad, she is alone and completely dependent upon humans – humans who are only interested in her as an “asset.”

There is no human need to hold other animals in captivity. There is no human need to gawk at or to turn other animals into mere commodities and spectacles. Marineland Animal Defense fights to remove Kiska and all of the other animals at Marineland and to ensure there are no more captives!

Lauren Yanofsky Hates the Holocaust

Genre:  Realistic Fiction

What did you like about the book? Lauren is not your typical 17 year old Jewish girl.  In fact, Lauren doesn’t even want to be Jewish anymore.  She doesn’t want to go to youth group or temple, and she wishes her father would stop trying to give her books to read about the Holocaust.  But becoming ‘un-Jewish’ is harder than Lauren thought.  She starts having trouble fitting in with her friends, is struggling with her feelings for a boy, and cannot decide if she should tell on a group of kids who think it is fun to play Nazi war games.  In the end this is not a book about being Jewish or a book about the Holocaust. This is a book about family, friends, first loves, and the importance of standing up and doing the right thing. 

What didn’t you like about the book? There were times when Lauren’s internal monologue dragged on a bit too long and caused the story to lose focus.  Some additional editing to fix grammar and typos was also needed for this one.

To whom would you recommend this book?  This is a story for kids who enjoy reading about modern day teens who have everyday problems.

Who should buy this book? Public Libraries

Where would you shelve it and why? Teen or YA Fiction

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? You can skip this one, but it is a fun read if you are looking for a story with a happy ending.

找来找去，发现一个叫orca.io的网站，进行cdn加速很不错，每天有1G的流量，一个月30G。这个名字听起来挺熟的，看后台的流量监测，感觉和上班看到的orca一样。不知道他们有没有什么亲戚。我这个博客撑死了也用不上那么多流量。申请完之后，发现他们的cdn只是改了一个dns的cname记录，而保留原来的dns server。这点倒是省了不少力气。我唯一诧异的是这家网站怎么活，没看到有收费的业务，也没看到自己的博客被挂上广告之类的东西。也不知道这个服务有没有什么隐患，先用着吧。在站点伪静态化之后，效果好多了。

刚写完发表，就发现隐患了就是静态站点镜像可能更新不及时，看到网上的说明是要么等30天，要么自己purge一下。看样子我需要在写好文字之后进行手动刷一下。顺便在这里记下站点的镜像地址http://c2898.orca.io/

Update 05/22/13: the number of live strandings coincided with this exercise is even more than we initially reported, now it stands at 24 live stranded cetaceans.

Here we go again, the largest exercise in Western Europe mysteriously coincided with a large cluster of marine mammal strandings.

The exercise was conducted between April 15 and April 25, 2013 (see map below). It was called “the largest exercise in Western Europe” because of its scope and activities involved. It included 30 warships (including 2 subs) and 65 aircraft from 13 European countries. Read more about these atrocities here and here.

Sadly and as usual we had a cluster of strandings that coincided with these exercises in time and space (see map below):

1. April 24, 2013. Three pilot whales stranded in Portmahomack in Easter Ross (link), UK, one died, 2 rescued. Necropsy: BDMLR? Responders: BDMLR & Scottish SPCA. Necropsy results and what tests were done? Nowhere to be found.

2. April 29, 2013. Six killer whales stranded in Langanes, Iceland. 1 was rescued, 2 shot and the rest died (link, link and link). Note on the video orca’s bloody eye that could indicate some sort of traumatic damage, the similar bloody eyes or blood coming from eyes were seen in other strandings caused by the Navy: “…whale deaths in the Bahamas trace to some form of shock trauma. Blood in the eyes, and type of tissue damage all point to some explosive or high intensity sound source.” (link).

Responders:? Local police?, Necropsy: ???

3. May 4, 2013. One dead pilot whale found by a member of the public in Yell, UK (link). No necropsy.

4. May 9, 2013. One dead (freshly dead, could have died after stranding) rare Sowerby’s beaked whale stranded  near Aberystwyth, UK (link). Necropsy: The Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme. What tests will be done and not done? When necropsy results will be available? Was testing for embolism done in a timely matter?

Now we are gonna scream if someone will have a nerve to argue that all these 11 stranded cetaceans suddenly fell ill so close in time and space to military activities, “the largest exercise in Western Europe”. As you can see there is no systematic investigation, only 2 whales will get some sort of necropsy and who knows what they will be testing for. Most likely this will be yet another case where whales strand like crazy and no one gives a hoot or pays attention. BDMLR/CSIP will seat on necropsy results or will find one worm and will say that parasites are responsible for animals’ deaths as they always say.

Today we’re crossing the Tasman for a  mystery of the deep. Fishy remains became famous last week when a strange carcass washed up on a New Zealand beach and made it big on YouTube under the guise of a “sea monster”.

Speculation about the prehistoric origin of the “monster” was atwitter until one of New Zealand’s marine mammal experts stepped in (cue the Get Smart theme song). New Zealand Museum’s Anton van Helden told NZ TV that it could be identified as an Orca (a.k.a. killer whale), due to a distinctive flipper. Killer whales are found in all oceans and it’s estimated that the largest population lives in Antarctic waters. New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty was certainly full of surprises, as this YouTube clip shows:

It’s unknown why the killer whale died or washed up on shore. I imagine if it could talk, it would probably say something like this…

Wild killer whales are not considered a threat to humans, although there have been cases of captives killing or injuring their handlers at marine theme parks. Killer whales feature strongly in the mythologies of indigenous cultures, with their reputation ranging from being the souls of humans to merciless killers.o
