Do you really know what’s in all the food you’re eating that’s imported from China? If you don’t, you’re actually in good company: The FDA only inspects 1% – 2% of all the food imported from China, so they don’t know either. Even when they inspect a shipment, they rarely test it for heavy metals, pesticides, PCBs or other toxic contaminants.

Mark A. Kastel, Senior Farm Policy Analyst at The Cornucopia Institute, added emphasis to this point as he testified this week in The House Committee on Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats, saying, “We don’t trust, for good reason, the Chinese to supply ingredients for our dog and cat food. Why should we trust Chinese exporters for the food that we are feeding our children and families?”

It’s a good question. Especially when, as Kastel adds, Chinese food is being routinely found to contain “unapproved chemicals, dyes, pesticides and outright fraud (fake food).”

Heavily contaminated food from China

As Natural News has already reported, food from China is frequently found to contain alarming levels of heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury) and other contaminants. Politically, China is a communist dictatorship where freedom of speech is completely outlawed. Environmental regulations are virtually never enforced. The culture is one of total deception where lying, cheating, stealing or committing fraud to get ahead is considered completely acceptable — because that’s how government is operated there. The moral decay of China is directly reflected in the alarming dishonesty of the food supply. (Yes, a country’s food exports will reflect its cultural and political philosophies. Freedom produces healthy food. Oppression and communism produces deceptive, deadly food.)

And yet, even with all this being widely known, Chinese farms are rarely inspected by organic certifiers. “U.S. certifiers are unable to independently inspect farms and assure compliance to the USDA organic food and agriculture standards that are required for export to the U.S.” explained Kastel in testimony. “These imports should not be allowed to reach our shore until and unless we have a system in place to assure consumers they are getting what they pay for. Just like U.S. grown organic commodities, the safety of these products must be rigorously overseen by independent inspectors.”

Counterfeit ingredients are the new norm in China

Also testifying at the hearing was Patty Lovera, the Assistant Director of Washington, D.C.-based Food & Water Watch. The news on food fraud out of China “is a steady stream of controversies ranging from adulteration with counterfeit ingredients like melamine in dairy products, to widespread outbreaks of animal diseases like avian flu, and high levels of pesticide residues,” Lovera testified. “Just last week, news reports described a Chinese government campaign to break up a fake meat operation, leading to arrests of more than 900 people accused of passing off more than $1 million of rat meat as mutton.”

These 2011/12 harvest green (unroasted) coffee beans come from the farms of Humberto, Isidro & Juan Carlos Mamani from Colonia San Ignacio in the Yungas region of Bolivia, and were processed by the Cooperative with the same name. For the past four years we have been buying all of San Ignacio’s coffee production at guaranteed minimum prices, based on quality, as part of a multi-year contract. We are very happy with our long term relationship with San Ignacio and we have already seen significant improvements in the quality of their coffee and the lives of the farmers. We are proud to be the main source and inspiration for both improvements. These coffee beans are 100% Specialty Arabica (Tipica 90%, Caturra 10%), certified organic and shade-grown in the higher altitudes of the Carrasco La Reserva County, Caranavi Province. Invalsa pays for the organic certification as part of our long-term relationship. These coffee beans were depulped and washed using pure Andes mountain-spring water, sun-dried on wooden table tops and hand selected by “Palliris” (Aymara Indian women food graders). Because of their flavor and aroma (see cupping notes below) we prefer a moderately dark (#45 Agtron/SCCA) roast for these coffee beans. However, other roasters prefer it darker-roasted. Some roasters use it as a single-origin, others use it as a mandatory component of their special “secret” blend. Try all combinations and you decide! Our Head Cupper gave this coffee a score of 83. Cupping notes: Bright acidity with sweet, fruity chocolate aroma. Floral caramel, honey, intense citrus, medium body, orange overtones throughout. Round balance.

During Invalsa’s first Bolivia origin/sourcing trip in September of 2011, participants accompanied by our CEO Nelson & EVP Jorge visited the Cima del Jaguar estate and were hosted to a camp-light dinner by the extended Luque family (their homes do not yet have electricity), after we visited the farm, ate some ripe, red coffee cherries and took plenty of pictures. At night, some visitors claimed that they heard the roar of a jaguar, justifying the estate’s name. This is our fourth purchase from Cima del Jaguar, part of a multi-year contract to buy their entire production, separated by each individual farmer. We like its refreshing acidity and long aftertaste. Eulogio’s farm is located at over 5,000 feet above sea level. We have visited with the Luque extended family many times through our regular farm visits. These are 100% Arabica (Tipica 85%, Caturra 15%), shade-grown, de-pulped and washed using pure Andes glacier-melt water, sun-dried on wooden table tops and hand selected by “Palliris” (Aymara Indian women food graders). They were processed manually by Eulogio at his farm. Because of its complex flavor and bright acidity (see cupping notes below), we prefer a light medium (#65 Agtron/SCCA) roast for these coffee beans to truly appreciate all their flavor and aroma nuances. Our Head Cupper gave this coffee a score of 87, with notes as follows: Bright acidity, floral caramel, honey, green apple aromas. Intense citrus, fruity chocolate flavor. Long aftertaste, round body, excellent balance.

Named after the Nepali national flower, the rhododendron, the Guranse Tea Estate is situated at an altitude between 3300 and 7300 feet above sea level, located at Dhankuta, Hile, eastern Nepal. Probably one of the highest tea gardens in the world it produces one of the best teas. Grown as an organic classic ‘china bush’, -planted from seed not cuttings or clones, in an area found during a patrol searching for water (pani) for the king (jung) whilst warring with the English and Sikkimese . A stream was found and the tea garden later founded.

A very nice Autumn flush tea from one of the best classic tea gardens of Darjeeling (china bush etc) harvested in the first week of November 2012.

Dry, the tea has a classic dark bigger leaf with a fair amount of silvery and light golden tips, and a pleasant thick aroma of forest honey, Dutch cocoa and ripe blackberries.

After steeping for 5 minutes we get a dark golden orange sparkling cup with a well balanced medium to heavy taste of the classic Darjeeling teas and hints of mature forest fruits, honey, chocolate..

Whilst not a classic expressive muscatel tea, it is a wonderful harmonious tea with a fine aftertaste including hints of muscatel.
