Ever heard of the club owned by “the Al Capone of DC” on 14th and W? Club Madre, owned by Odessa Madre, was a popular nightclub where Moms Mabley, Count Basie, and Nat King Cole played in the 1940s. Now, after years of being empty, 2204 14th street houses Bicycle Stations.

The story here really isn’t Club Madre, but rather the Madre herself. She ran a bookmaking operation, was the madam of multiple brothels, trafficked narcotics, sold bootleg liquor, and had her fingers in other organized crime ventures. In her prime in the 1940s, she made $100,000 a year. The legend goes that at every party she threw, she set out a number of bowls of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana for her guests. She often made an entrance to a party or club dressed in fur and diamonds from head to toe, surrounded by her call girls. Many believed she was a lesbian.

She had the MPD so under her thumb, one story says, that when two officers refused to take a bribe from Odessa, they were demoted and reassigned. Of course, she was arrested often. By 1980, Madre had been arrested up 30 times on 57 charges over 48 years, seven of them spent in a federal prison. To celebrate one time when she got out of prison, she bought a Cadillac, another a Lincoln Continental.

Madre died in 1990 at the age of 83 of kidney failure. She had been very generous to the area’s poor and spent nearly all the money she had, leaving her penniless at her death. Her friends could only scrape together $51 for her funeral.

Gioa Tauro, 22 Dec. (AKI) – Two customs officials at the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro were among 27 mafia suspects arrested in several regions on Tuesday

Calderon’s statements underscore those made by a senior Mexican military commander, who was quoted saying that the “only organizations  trained, equipped and integrated with real unity of doctrine to ensure domestic order…are the armed forces”

“Lets act like we are in a war situation, because we are! We will exert as strong a force as they have And will go after them totally. that’s what that picture means. We will be ruthless.” (Milenio)

Hours after President Calderon declared there would be “no quarter and no truce” in the war with criminal organizations, a suspected Zetas commando team killed the mother and four relatives of a Navy Special Forces sergeant who died in the raid in Cuernavaca that killed Arturo Beltran Leyva, who allied his cartel with  the Zetas in 2008.

The Municipal Public Security Bureau in Paraiso, Tabasco reported that the multiple murders took place around midnight as the family slept. Three vans rolled up on the house and unloaded with AR-15s killing Mrs. Irma Cordova Palma, mother of  3rd Navy Special Forces Master  Melchizedek Angulo Cordova, whose funeral took place earlier in the day (El Universal)

It’s an official  military war now–no euphemism–in which the cartels are  no longer criminals but declared  “enemy combatants.”

About 3PM last  Wednesday in Apt 201 of a residential tower in the upscale Lomas de Selva neighborhood of Cuernavaca,  the chef was preparing dinner for his boss, Senor Arturo Beltran Leyva who was in the living room with five of his lieutenants, including his chief of security and enforcement, Edgard Valdez Villareal–el Barbie.

The chef, who was arrested following the military raid on his boss, told agents that Senor Arturo was getting reports  of “strange movements” out in the street, but the cartel chief dismissed them, saying his men would take care of it and returned to his meeting with Valdez and his entourage.

The six men were preparing for a business meeting with Don Arturo’s expected dinner guests: Gen. Leopoldo Diaz Perez, commander of Zona Militar 24 (state of Morelos), along with two other Mexican army officers–a captain and a major.

Outside the apartment Mexican marines were crawling all over the perimeter. They dad been quietly evacuating the nearby buildings and apartments since noon. At 5pm they struck–200 strong– from the ground and by air.

At around 9PM, alone with no bodyguards remaining, Arturo ‘La Muerte’ Beltran opened the front door of his condo and met  a fusilade of armor-piercing 5.59 rounds to the chest, abdomen and head. He collapsed dead in the doorway. Whereupon the marines and other military personnel did “a number” on Don Arturo as seen here and in the photo below which shows what appears to be a postmortem bayonet or large knife wound to the left side of the chest.

(These and other pictures taken at the scene have become an Abu Ghraib-moment  for the Calderon administration and the military. Interior Secretary Fernando Gomez Mont had to call a press conference to say that “the Mexican government fulfills its duty to stop criminal organizations and their leaders, but without personal abuse or scandalous and frivolous attitudes” and that an investigation was under “to find the person or persons responsible for capturing these images and disseminating them. “–((emphasis added))   He assured reporters that the federal agents who participated in the operation were not responsible.

By this time Beltran Leyva  security jefe El Barbie Valdez was long since gone, disappearing “somehow” before the marines came rappelling down the side of the building and hasn’t been seen since. Gen. Diaz and his men were stopped on the way to their meeting with Don Arturo and were immediately disarmed, arrested and blindfolded before being driven off to some unnamed detention facility

With the  release of this information, Valdes has almost zero chance of heading the cartel–and may be just a dead man walking. He is either hidden somewhere by Mexican security–military or PGR, or has returned into the arms of Chapo Guzman and the Sinaloa cartel. Or, considering the acknowledgement by Mexican officials that US intelligence was key to the operation on Wednesday that ended with Arturo Beltran’s death, el Barbie may have found refuge with the gringos. If not, Valdez  better have some very convincing bullshit to throw the next time he meets one of the surviving Beltran brothers.

This news today suggests that the leadership of the BL cartel will fall to Arturo’s brother Hector who is the org’s financial chief.  And unless Arturo’s killing resulted from some fraternal intrigues, brother Carlos will be at Hector’s side.

The only clear-cut  big winner out of the spectacular  bloodbath in Cuernavaca–at least in the near term– appears to  be Shorty Guzman.

Most folks with half a brain, and common sense, know that cap-and-trade is a scam to tax Americans so progressives can pay for their entitlement programs. Europe is already suffering from the cap-and-trade scheme and now Euro’s top cops are saying tha carbon trading is nothing more than an organized crime scheme.

The top cops in Europe say carbon-trading has fallen prey to an organized crime scheme that has robbed the continent of $7.4 billion — a massive fraud that lawmakers and energy experts say should send a “red flag” to the U.S., where the House approved cap-and-trade legislation over the summer amid stiff opposition.

In a statement released last week, the Europol police agency said Europe’s cap-and-trade system has been the victim of organized crime during the past 18 months, resulting in losses of roughly $7.4 billion. The agency, headquartered in the Netherlands, estimated that in some countries up to 90 percent of the entire market volume was caused by fraudulent activities.

“These criminal activities endanger the credibility of the European Union Emission Trading System and lead to the loss of significant tax revenue for governments,” Rob Wainwright, Europol’s director, said in a statement.

How does the scheme work?

The “accused traders would open an account in a national carbon registry and then purchased emission allowances without value added taxes from other companies in other countries. Those allowances were then transferred to the country where they were registered before the accused trader moves them to an unregulated broker, selling the allowances on a trading exchange, often through various buffer companies. Finally, the accused trader charges the value added tax on the transaction but does not submit that money to authorities.”

So, besides the tax and tax scam that is cap-and-trade, American taxpayers will have to worry about organized crime screwing us. There is something in common between the U.S. government and organized crime. Both are out to rob us blind and spread the wealth. Sounds like Obama’s game plan.

Okay, for many of you out here who have just joined the world-renown Douginator Online Magazine may not know that not only am I a published author, creator of worlds, visionary, scribe, graphic artist, musician, and, well, a legend in my own mind, and you are all just here renting space – Hey, just ask me, and I’ll tell you.

This band was called “Renegade” and originally formed in the garage somewhere on Chicago’s lower Industrial South Side. Then of course as fame and fortune would deny me, not to mention the fact that I moved to Oregon. I was good enough to drag along my Dad, and brothers along. It was a bitch, but since the Feds told us that my Dad had turned over federal and state’s evidence, well, we had to move.

Under the watchful eye of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, I re-formed “Renegade” in Medford, Oregon. There, using this clever cover of the so-called band of misfits, I was able to continuing my real gig in organized crime. The band itself was nothing more than a bunch of young teen “Button Men” for a “family” there before we got sick of working for someone else and formed out own crew, and thus a new family was formed. Since I wasn’t Italian and neither was the rest of the guys, the Mafia in the area didn’t want any affiliation. A firefight ensued that made the “Valentine’s Day Massacre of Chicago” look like a fucking card game. May want to ask Stephen Craig Rowe more about the latter since he was connected with Capone through various means – Indirectly, of course.

“The Band” yeah, because of my crew, well, the Oregon State Police, the FBI, and some other chumps in cheap suits and ill-fitting shoes are still recovering bodies and the initial incident was back in 1978-79.

Yeah, some say that we made the likes of Capone, Dillinger, and that slut of a bitch, Bonnie and her pimp, Clyde look like Sunday School Teachers poking young boys in the ass – Ass the Catholics do so much. Perhaps some sort of homosexual theology goings-on and unspoken but so often practiced.

I found out then, one of the side benefits of our high grade marijuana caused both old and young babes to fall right out of their clothing – Literally.

I would use this technology to my own dark incentives with the fairer sex soon enough. Of course, I was a budding teen with hormones, and I had oh so much to give. Yeah, my libido was off the scales. There were these times…

So while the crew, I mean, the Band was out racking up a body count, I was, without exception, doing my part for the Human Gene-Pool and racking up a slightly different body count of my very own. I believe mine came with some hefty gratification in it’s own right. So, anyway, I know, the band, right?

Growing womanizing weed, and quite the reputation as a friend of the late 70’s and early 80’s Stoner, I continued to hone my assets and skills that you cannot or should not include on a resume, I proceeded with my musical endeavors.

I never sold weed in school, that was so fucking white trash. No, but I would give a shitload away, and with the fact that the weed had a way with easily opening up the precious thighs of too numerous to count, cheerleaders, and the legions of assorted skanks. I was in the slippery-wet fast track of things.

Unlike all of the tree-humping, self-gratification on a fiendish scale of so many of my counter-parts, I managed to cop a couple of sweet gigs. Okay, my late brother James did mention to folks, “Yeah the band is really good…” Which nobody believed or took into account, but they did manage to conceive, “…and there will be free weed floating around there…” Well our first gig which was at a fucking school dance, yeah, have to start somewhere. I mean I had it my mind of selling out coliseums and women in a frenzy flashing us from a herd of thousands. Hey, I have a big imagination and aspirations even then.

What can I say?

So, the sell out coliseums would have to wait. So there we were, singing songs that these tree-huggers and ass-backwards children of cousins, if you would, stood in the cloud of dope in confusion, frustration, and the stupid over-rated bullshit of teenage angst, we played on.

We were doing so cutting edge hard-core music that we lost most everyone right away. Yeah, this is the Chicago in me. Listen, if you want to hear some really great shit of all kinds, do yourself a fucking favor – Visit Chicago.

Anyway, yeah, bummer for us. We played our hearts out to a bunch of Neanderthals, then something happened. Mysteriously, the dope must have hit them all, even the teachers through the use of second-hand smoke, sprang to life and a few bitches found themselves being balled like there was no tomorrow in the boy’s room – Faces in the toilets and urinals, and freshly shaven asses in the air and all. This gave a whole new meaning to “Smoking In The Boy’s Room” done originally by the Brownsville Station off the album, “Yeah.”

Now, we were getting somewhere…

Next we were doing gigs at other joints, not bars, we were all too young, but we found ourselves headlining some pretty big gatherings of at least 20 to 30 people in a single event. Shit, no stopping us now. Though it did seem bands from California like Van Halen and the British influences of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath desperately attempting to catch up to four guys from Stuck In The Woods, Oregon were gaining both popularity and traction.

Things were starting to look up. I mean, we were not spending our material, you know Marijuana coaxing kids to listen to us now, or the need to roll over beer and liquor trucks. James, he stopped pimping out the 7th Grade girls to the business men of the greater Medford area – Teen Pregnancy dropped substantially by the way, after that little venture of his. James was quite the pimp and Southern Oregon was fresh meat for the fucking taking.

Though, the business for James on that end was doing great and brought in a lot of financial clout. My brother Walter then discovered photography and a little thing called blackmail that he would use together most instrumentally, I might add. He would take pictures of these men, mostly beat cops, a few teachers, some local pastors. I think there was one misguided Catholic priest who fancied young girls too – Imagine that, a priest that liked balling girls?

I know, what’s next, sheep?

Yeah, Walt made bank off of the two technologies, if you would. Meanwhile, I was scoring so many chicks that caused my own father to literally gloat with astounding pride. Yeah, if it had a clit, I was all over it. I found myself strung out on estrogen a couple of times, and trust me guys, some of you are not alone in this.

Hell, I even found my face up some dyke as she complained of all things, a cold nose, but she said I was quite a natural at it. Cool beans, I mean if a dyke tells you you’re good at it, you know…

Then that’s saying something, right?

I managed to slow my roll a bit before I would end up dead or something. I was even getting worried. So I would “fast” for a few days and then hit the gals hard on the weekend – Like a runaway jackhammer making gravel out of their little, you know whats. Besides, as some of us more experienced guys go, you can’t really brake the stuff, you can stretch it a mile, but only rips an inch!

Remarkable material, you know this thing called “Pussy” and all. Can you imagine if you made tires synthetically out of this material?

You’d only need one set your entire life. Though it would be a real bitch if the road was a little wet. Shit, off the road you’d go. Or imagine a suit made of this stuff, a guy could literally buy only one suit as a child and it would fit him for life. Just a thought, I suppose.

Oh, I know, I think too much. Anyway, it was a good method in winging myself to sex down to no more than twenty or thirty times a week and I would have more than enough time to handle and manage the Marijuana Plantation. I managed in chumming up next to a sexually deprived daughter of the County Sheriff and in this little treasure of grand opportunity, I would literally pump her for information while working in another cover at her family owned Gas Station, and trust me, Gasoline wasn’t the only thing getting “pumped.”

Hey, she always had a lot to say when the mood hit her, when I was in “the slot.” In fact, sometimes the whole neighborhood would hear her beg for it and in these times, would even make me blush to this very day. There were on several occasions that I would have to shove her wet panties in her mouth. She would be saying too much, and previously, I never could imagine that was possible. I would come to know every raid that the fucking cops would be planning to do before they actually have done it – Fucking sweet!

Oh, the fucking memories…

Besides my crew was continuing to evolve, I mean those young 7th grade whores would get old and lose the interests of the Jacksonville County businessmen by the 8th or 9th grade – You know the deal.

So we continued to play and we even manage to get a gig down in San Francisco and I got to tell you, I love the town. I met some folks from Jefferson Starship, formerly Airplane, and Gary Numan who was really stoned and lost. For a little British guy, he sure could smoke a lot of our weed.

Then, we met the Doobie Brothers, and they were old guys then and didn’t smoke all that much. One of the guys in the band were dating a whore by the name of Susan Saint James and she was found two timing those bastards and they got sore and broke the fuck up – Pity, over a fucking slut.

I also met a gun-shy lad that called himself Edward Van Halen. “Hey Eddie” I always called him. He wanted to know how he could be a better guitarist and all. I told him to quit introducing himself as Edward, but go with Eddie instead. Seemed less “anal” that way. I showed Eddie a few tricks. He picked it up rather quickly. I mean, I played Bass, what the fuck did I know about guitars?

To this very day, Eddie Van Halen and his brother from the band still thank me personally, and the boys in my band for their jump start with success. Yes, it’s all there in the VH1 Rock Documentaries. Van Halen was everything they ever hoped to be, but paled significantly to our group, Renegade.

We found ourselves in Hollywood and then landing our International Tour in the summer of 1980. we went to England, told Iron Maiden to chuck their lead singer at the time and use this guy who’s been following us around like someone’s lost dog. Instant success for their band in listening to us. I loved Judas Priest and they didn’t need any help from us, but appreciated all we did. Yeah, K.K. Downing, and Rob Halford, we got high many times on my weed. Halford says to this day that He swears he saw Jesus and he never believed in him anyway. Still, I get a card on my birthday from him, included is a note if I am going to start growing any more killer weed.

Say what you want about these heavy metal guys, their only guys, people like you and those others standing around you. You may have saw AC/DC open up for our band in London when they came out with the Back In Black album. Jimmy, my brother and I wrote “Hells Bells” and “Back In Black” for Angus, Frank, and the lads. After all, they just lost Bon Scott – Damn…

Off to Germany we went and met a tiny little band calling themselves the Scorpions. This band was popular there in West Germany at the time. We did what we could for the group which later, because of Renegade’s phenomenal help in music, they actually manage to usher in the fall of the Berlin Wall – It’s true.

Meanwhile back in the States, the Marijuana plantation was getting out of hand and I had to have some hired help in the matter. That’s when I met the young Barak Obama. Yeah he was a self-diluted kid that wanted to grow up to be a rock star. I told him to keep his fucking nose to the grind and manage the weed. He did, and with a name like Barack, who in the fuck would ever listen to his music, let alone, take the idiot seriously?

Then, my “Grams” a small Scottish Highlander suggested in no uncertain terms that she was going to put an end to my “whoring around” and somewhere in the translation from Scotch-Gaelic to English as it so often does pathetically, looses the punch and the expected impact. I loved “Grams” and you would have too.

“Douglas, I want you to find yourself a nice Scottish young lady. They will understand you, and fit you well…” She clarified the last part, “…fit you well” as emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and of course as I found out, physically too. Unfortunate for me, the Scottish Babes spoke Gaelic fluently so ended the fun of calling them “sluts” and “bitches” in front of them. I know, I know, isn’t that calling the kittle black on my part.

I got my ass kicked by these very girls on a couple of occasions before I caught on.

So, I promised my Grams that I would find a “Wee Bonny of a Lass” and I did, three of them. Meet, Heather, Bonnie Anne, and Margaret Maxine” from left to right. Grams loved Maxine, since they shared the same names – I loved my Grams, did that for her. Grams eventually got over my need of having three babes I was seeing all at the same time. I explained to Grams that I needed options in so many words. As a Chicagoan, and I know Stephen will understand and appreciate everything I am saying, I gave my three brides to be nicknames. Yeah, from left to right, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. I took Thursday and Friday off for Golf and Lent. Saturday was reserved for Grams after Gramps passed on, and Sundays, I would have to take my sisters shopping – Priorities.

Every once in a while I would sneak in and devour all three at the same time, hell on the sheets, but what the fuck, right?

Grams was right, they had my “number pegged.” I would later dump these bimbos and marry Laura. She’s Scottish, and my Grams, she was right all along about everything. I wouldn’t trade Laura for nothing.

Laura is a lamb in the kitchen but a man-eating tiger in the bedroom. Trust me, she actually hurt me twice, and the paramedics had to remove the bedding from my curled toes in a death-lock – That’s all I’m sayin’.

So, like every good thing, before our first album went triple platinum a third time, we released two more albums that went as such. I eventually left Organized Crime which was a relief to many. I then went into the US Air Force to escape the unrelenting fame and fortune that corrupts so many of our youth today.

Besides, the USAF became a really great cover for my covert works and in this kiddies, that is another story for another time…

Indian officials are beginning to wonder why they have not been given access to David Headley, the Pakistani born, American national arrested October 3rd in Chicago for planning the November 26 2008 attacks in Mumbai, India.  Headley, born  Daood Syed Gilani, is believed to have travelled to India in the run up to the attacks to take photographic and video surveillance of hotels and the port of Mumbai.  He is also believed to be one of the men to have directed the attackers over open telephone lines from Pakistan – 166 people were killed.  Indian Intelligence believes the attacks were perpetrated by Lashkar e Taiba, a Pakistani terror group.  Indian officials having been eager to speak to Headley since his arrest, but have thus far been rebuked by US officials.  Indian officials presumably believe Headley would be helpful in understanding the level of support from Pakistan’s intelligence service – ISI, and the role Indian extremists played in the logistics of the attack.  US officials say American law prohibits the government from forcing someone in custody from speaking to a foreign intelligence service.  Indian intelligence officials believe the true reason for the stonewalling may be Headley’s connections to US intelligence.  Headley moved to the US in 1977 with his mother, in 1998 he was convicted of smuggling heroin into the United States.  He served only 15 months behind bars after agreeing to become a DEA informant, who, according to Indian officials he  continued to work for the DEA until shortly before his arrest-after the attacks and alleged reconnaissance trips to India.  B. Raman, a former senior official in India’s intelligence agency, said: “He was working for Lashkar e Taiba, taking photographs and video recordings of the [Mumbai] hotels and harbour. And he was an agent for the DEA on drugs, so in that sense he was a double agent.  Indian officials believe Headley was likely recruited to work for the CIA due to his ties to the heroin trade. ”Indian officials are very keen to question him about his network, but we can’t because we might find out about any connections with the CIA or ISI. They don’t want that to happen. The Americans say ‘you ask us what you want us to find out and we’ll share the information’,” he added.  Highly placed government sources said if he was given lesser punishment in a U.S. court, it would only strengthen India’s suspicion that he was a “double agent.”  Such a punishment could also be given through the process of “plea bargain” before the court between him and the U.S. agencies.

Posting on the Argentine/Mexico/Euro narco nexus  has to be delayed yet again because of  this..Covered in dollars, pesos, rosaries and his blood,  “Jefe de jefes” Arturo Beltran Leyva–La Muerte–the head of the Beltran Leyva cartel lies dead following a two-hour tiroteo with a combined force of  200 Mexican marines, Navy special forces and army soldiers in an air-and-ground assault on a high-dollar condo complex in the heart of Cuernavaca Wednesday evening.

The massive air-and-ground military operation on the Cuernavaca high-rise condo complex was planned and mounted with the assistance of “US intelligence”–specifically the DEA and FBI.

In his press conference on Thursday  Navy Department spokesman, Jose Luis Vergara said “This operation was the result of the intensive work done by intelligence elements of the Mexican Navy-Armada de Mexico, as well as exchange information with other national and foreign agencies.”

According to reports from the Mexican Navy the raid that left Arturo Beltran Leyva and five other cartel gunmen dead was the result of a joint US/Mexico intelligence operation specifically targeting the Beltran Leyva leadership by the Mexican Defense Ministry (SEDENA), the DEA and the FBI that launched  more than six months ago. Vergara added that Wednesday evening raid was a follow-up to an operation conducted last Friday. (Excelsior)

On Friday Dec 11  a contingent of marines raided a Beltran Leyva Christmas fiesta in the exclusive Ahuatepec neighborhood in Morelos in which three gunmen were killed and more than 20 arrested,  including three-time Latin Grammy award winner and legendary ranchera superstar, Ramon Ayala who was performing at the party.

The target of this raid was reported not Arturo but his lieutenant, Edgar Valdes, alias “La Barbie”, head of Beltran Leyva enforcement. Valdes escaped capture following the  Christmas party balacera.  There later was speculation that  Valdes  was the primary target in the Wednesday night raid on the Cuernavaca condo complex–not Arturo.

But that is doesn’t appear to the case.

Mexican authorities were specifically targeting Arturo when they launched the operation based on information provided by  FBI and DEA  intelligence entities that Beltran Leyva would be at the location Wednesday night.

What was the objective –to arrest Arturo or simply kill him?

Given the known circumstances surrounding Beltran Leyva’s sensational prime-time killing, the hyperactive Mexican press and the political gaming, conspiracy theories are choking the air  and obscuring clarity as to exactly how–and why–Arturo Beltran Leyva was killed.

What is clear is that his killing will only exacerbate a gravely unstable security environment in the country.

In a press conference on Thursday,  Mexico’s  Attorney General  Arturo Chavez Chavez said “A wave of violence can not be ruled out” in the wake of Don Arturo’s death.

Chavez was equivocal as to who would take the reins of the Beltran Leyva cartel, but it appears that they would fall into the hands of Arturo’s brother Hector– “el General–who is considered by many to be even more dangerous than his late brother.

Chavez said that samples of  DNA were being taken from Don Arturo’s incarcerated brother and  tests would be conducted to positively identify the individual killed in Wednesday as Arturo Beltran Leyva.

While attending the global climate summit in Copenhagen,  Mexican President Calderón took the time to go before the cameras where he called the raid by marines and the killing of Arturo Beltran Leyva “a knockout blow…an important achievement for the government and people of Mexico.”

Back in Mexico City U.S. Ambassador  Carlos Pascual was  echoing Calderon saying the carnage in Cuernavaca suggests that Calderon’s  crackdown is working. “We have begun having an impact against the drug traffickers,” Pascual said in a news conference Wednesday in Mexico City.  “I don’t think it’s because we are doing something wrong.”

Pascual added that the United States is sending 45 more DEA  agents to Mexico to join the narcoguerra.

Despite such assurances from President Calderon and ambassador Pascual, the cartel v cartel wars and the cartels v Mexican government war are going to get much hotter, much more vicious and more costly–

The Beltran Leyva org must quickly come to terms with Arturo’s death. The most likely successor to the top spot is Arturo’s brother Hector. There is also another brother, Carlos but he is not expected to contend for the position. Also in the mix is Edgar Valdes, alias “La Barbie”, head of Beltran Leyva enforcement.  Despite the immediate chaotic situation, the Beltran Leyva leadership knows it must resolve the problem soon and avoid an internal split and bloodletting. For its survival the org must maintain its alliance with the Zetas/La Compania  Gulf/Zetas chart and quickly  focus their considerable combined forces on Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman and his Sinaloa cartel–’la Federacion–not only in their battleground states of Sinaloa, Nayarit and Jalisco but anywhere else they may find each other. Another contributor working against the breakup of Beltran Leyva is that the organization is very much a family affair. At the time of his death, Arturo Beltran Leyva was a sworn enemy of Joaquin ‘Chapo” Guzman, despite their being native Sinaloans and having shared power in the Sinaloa cartel leadership.

In 2008 Beltran Leyva broke with Guzman whom Arturo accused of betraying his brother Alfredo to Mexican authorities and his subsequent arrest and imprisonment. This led to Beltran Leyva allying with Los Zetas/La Compania.  Since then there has been a ferocious war between the two orgs marked by beheadings and narcomensajes  signed by “Jefe de jefes”– one of Arturo’s monikers.

Meanwhile the BL/Zetas must continue their battle with La Familia for control in the strategic states of Michoacan, Guerrero and Chiapas. La Familia will certainly take advantage of the situation. It has a choice to either  push harder against Guzman/ la Federacion and Beltran Leyva  on the Pacific coast north of Michoacan or come to some agreement with Sinaola.

Clearly, there is no end in sight with these wars.

• The 200-man military assault in Cuernavaca upped the ante in the war between the cartels and Calderon’s forces.

• The killing of Arturo Beltran Leyva will certainly not weaken the cartels. It is not even certain that his death will cause more than a stutter-step in his own organization.

• The cartels’ larger-scale counterattack strategy that began six months ago against police and military facilities across nine states of the republic and then escalated during the fist two weeks of this month will continue and likely intensify. We also may see some tactical upgrades.

Examples to consider::

• assassinations of high-profile military and federal government targets. Given the circumstances in Beltran Leyva’s killing and his position, FBI, DEA and other US agents and contractors may now be targeted by the cartels–something they’ve avoided since the murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena in Februrary 1985. Reprisals against US business personnel should be considered as well.

• deployment of large IEDs and truck bombs (something the cartels have refrained from in the past, though they are fully capable of producing them).

• major sabotage of infrastructure and state-owned industries, including petroleum and mining.

The killing of   ‘La Muerte’  at the hands of the Mexican military and US intelligence is a “victory” limited to the very expensive death of one man who will soon be replaced by another of equal ability that will only inflame the cartels resolve and further exacerbate a gravely unstable security environment in the country.

As veteran journalist and columnist, Federico Arreola warned on Thursday, “Abróchense el cinturón, entramos a zona de todavía mayor turbulencia”–Fasten your seatbelts, we are heading into more turbulence.
