This is again more of a note to myself than a blog post… After upgrading my Mac OS X to Snow L

This is again more of a note to myself than a blog post… After upgrading my Mac OS X to Snow Leopard I’ve started to use the default 64bit Python 2.61 and consequently PyQt stopped working. I managed to get it back by compiling from source packages, with the instructions I found from this Finnish blog.

The Qt 4.5.3 installed from DMG didn’t work so first I compiled Qt 4.6RC (should have Snow Leopard support, this DMG might work) from source using:

./configure -arch x86_64
gmake
sudo gmake install

PyQt depends on SIP so next I installed sip-4.9.3:

python configure.py
make
sudo make install

And finally the actual PyQt 4.6.2:

python configure.py -q /usr/local/Trolltech/Qt-4.6.0/bin/qmake
make
sudo make install

And now: It works!

- Dai il comando:

diskutil info /Volumes/volume_name" and copy the Volume UUID

- Dai quest’altro comando:

sudo nano /etc/fstab

- Inserisci la seguente stringa:

UUID=INCOLLA_QUI_IL_TUO_UUID none ntfs rw

do shell script "/usr/local/bin/scanimage --format tiff -x 220 -y 300 --resolution 150dpi > ~/Desktop/scansione.tiff"

nuova versione (grazie Nemo)

choose file name with prompt "Inserisci il nome del file (SENZA ESTENSIONE)"
set nome_file to quoted form of POSIX path of result & ".tiff"
set risoluzione to "--resolution 150dpi > "
do shell script "/usr/local/bin/scanimage --format tiff -x 220 -y 300 " & risoluzione & nome_file

set res_value to "150"
tell application "Finder"
display dialog "Inserisci la risoluzione (150, 200, 300 dpi)" default answer res_value buttons {"OK"} default button 1
set res_value to text returned of result & "dpi"
end tell
choose file name with prompt "Inserisci il nome del file (SENZA ESTENSIONE)"
set nome_file to quoted form of POSIX path of result & "_" & res_value & ".tiff"
set risoluzione to "--resolution " & res_value & " > "
do shell script "/usr/local/bin/scanimage --format tiff -x 220 -y 300 " & risoluzione & nome_file

Hello Viewers,

I know I’ve been quiet for some time. It’s been a year already since I moved to LA. I came with a MacBook 1st generation and a Compaq Presario Laptop. Now, a year later…my Macbook died and I sold that presario and an Asus EeePC 900HA that I purchased a few months after moving here.

Currently I’m working out of my MacBook Pro 13″ Aluminum that I purchased a couple of months ago and my iPhone 3G. I am officially a twitter addict and that’s the reason mainly why I have drifted away from wordpress.

I am in the process of acquiring a new Netbook because I miss the portability of one but not the compromises. I’m thinking of getting one with ION Graphics like the HP 311 or perhaps the Acer Aspire 1410 with Intel 4500HD. These are available with Windows 7, but I’ll wait until the holiday’s are gone and I have rounded up some money.

Also, I’m very intrigued about Android and Chrome OS. I think they are both great ideas but Google should have followed the path of the iPhone because if they do not focus on one specific device, it’ll become the next Windows Mobile…too many devices, not enough developers interested in developing apps for several screen sizes, hardware and users.

Another thing I’d like to say is that my Team, REAL MADRID are on the top of the spanish league.

The current range of Hardbox hard disk drives seems startlingly under-reviewed, so I am going to give you my thoughts on their desktop line.

The Hardbox drives are available in various capacities, but the one I have has a 250GB capacity. I bought it from the wonderful stockist Pine Digital Ltd.

The product that I have on my desk is large-ish and coloured in a striking orange and black scheme. The power cable is provided as is a USB cable. Once these are both plugged in, the drive boots up. I thought at first it’s a noisy racket, but compared to Seagate or WD offerings, it’s quite quiet. The exceedingly bright LED is a feature of annoyance, though – it lights up the whole room.

The drive seems to work happily enough (pre-formatted) like a plug-and-play device, and copying media through a USB hub is fast enough (no Firewire). There is also backup software for Windows users who don’t have Time Machine, which is good for Mac folk. The backup can be initiated by pushing the single, LED-ized button, which confusingly turns it on and off as well.

As functions and looks go, the drive is really just like any good one you can pick up, but from where I got it, quite a bit cheaper. The price per GB is good and the energy saving mode which stops the disk from “spinning” is very nice. In this mode, the stupid light is also dimmed slightly.

Over the course of time, the drive has filled slightly, but it’s big enough for a huge archive and I particularly commend its reliability – even without generally accepted precautions this drive keeps ticking.

I recommend this product with a 4/5 star rating – it is reliable and cheap, as well as easy to use, but the interface is a bit silly for me.

P.S. A good Christmas present and good for all kinds of storage – replace that CD cabinet in your father’s study, maybe?

Ok, let’s start. I decided to translate a part of this post for English-speaking people since I haven’t found any website talking about how to use Madobe Nanami’s sounds on OS X. And I’m sure a lot of otakus out there would like to do it, but may not know how to
I hope this post will be of some use to you.
I’ll make a step-by-step “guide”, but it’s not really complicated

This is what Madobe Nanami sounds like.

First, I advise you to make a copy of the sounds you are going to replace, and make a back-up of your system ! You don’t have to do it actually, but I like being cautious in case something goes wrong

1. You need to get the sounds somewhere from the web

2. If necessary, adjust the volume of the sounds to meet your expectations.

3. If necessary, convert the files to wave or mp3. These formats work with applications like Adium. I used wave in 48 000 Hz, 16 bits, mono.

4. For sounds used by the UI, you have to convert them to AIFF, or they won’t work. I know iTunes and QuickTime Pro convert files to AIFF.

5. Now, to replace the alert sound, go to System\Library\Sounds in the finder. Drop your file and go to the preferences panel, then Sound > Sound Effects, and choose from the list.

6. To replace UI sounds, go to System\Library\Components in the finder and show the package of CoreAudio.component. Now go to Contents\Resources\SystemSounds and there will be folders with the sounds you want to change.

7. It is also possible to add a sound when unmounting an image or a device. To do this, you need to download MacBarfX. Now mount the dmg file and show the package of the application. Open the Resources folder and replace barf.aiff by the sound you want.

When replacing some files, OS X will ask you to authenticate, and they will only work once you have rebooted.

You now have a nanamized Mac ! Have fun !

< rdar://problem/7386864> 11A47: SecurityAgent no longer visible via Accessibility

“Pirorin !”, me dit-elle.

Everyone secretly loves flight simulation. Soaring above (or below) the clouds is a great experience

Everyone secretly loves flight simulation. Soaring above (or below) the clouds is a great experience, however it is generated. The iPhone and iPod touch devices, despite their small screens, are great for this sort of activity. The computing and graphics power is quite great and the accelerometer makes it quite hard to crash.

Here are my top flight sims in no particular order… unfortunately none are free, although Lite or Trainer versions might exist or become available…

X-Plane is a simulator that is absolutely physically realistic to the extent that a mobile phone can be. It presents serious options to practise or try out “proper” manoeuvres, including using excellently developed navigation on beautiful aircraft. There are terrain options, other aircraft (occasionally) and challenging runways. It uses the accelerometer to great effect. Multiplayer or not.

F.A.S.T. is an aerial combat game that is, again, very realistic, although less so. There is a social club, a multiplayer mode and an option to fight against enemies in planes with blackout-causing g-force. The satisfaction of this one can be immense – after all, it is designed to be challenging, with a name like “Fleet Air Superiority Training”. If you like missions, this is one for you.

Flight Control is about moving aircraft of various sizes and speeds to their correct helipads and runways. It’s a 2D setup but don’t be fooled – co-ordinating movements of planes of different speeds and requirements is tricky. There are several terrain modes, and the game itself is easy to use. A good value item that interacts with others over Bluetooth, WiFi or even Facebook (although that’s not live). Enjoy dragging aircraft around with your finger, then…

I would like to particularly thank the developers of these apps for their great work. Keep it up, guys!

Writers Note: I work with more operating systems than I care to – six at the moment. Among the

Writers Note: I work with more operating systems than I care to – six at the moment. Among them are the top three – Windows, Linux, and Mac. Nothing makes me contemplate operating systems more than Mac though. It’s not so much that it sucks through-and-through; it doesn’t. Mac OS X just has a few giant moles on its otherwise firm, benevolent tits.

These items here are why I hate the Mac OS. They are the things Mac shouldn’t expect anyone to have to deal with, but by-and-large do.

5. Getting to Desktop

Your desktop is a great staging area for new files that you aren’t quite sure where to put yet. Maybe they’ll go into your report, maybe they’ll go into the big folder of personal observations, or maybe they’ll get deleted. It makes sense that Apple would make a button that hides all the other windows and shows your desktop… what’s that? Right, that doesn’t exist. Well, technically it does, you can press F11 and all the various open windows will fly to the border of your screen, effectively displaying the desktop, but really… F11? That’s not a button I want my pinky searching for late at night with no lights on. This is like building a car with the windshield wiper control on the passenger side, next to the cigarette adapter, and marked only with the unlit glyph “F11″. Make the damn button, Mac. Make it standard, no matter what the Expose guys say.

4. Updates
Every week you will get security updates from Apple, or yet another version of iTunes, or whatever else popping up in the Dock. And by popping up I mean bouncing around like an ADD kid, typically while you are trying to meet a deadline or impress a lady friend or several lady friends. The security updates are fine (hey, while we are talking about it, Apple has plenty of security holes), but a dancing icon for every new iTunes update? Get lost. And worst of all, practically every update makes you reboot. I kid you not, get ready to close down everything and reboot for the rest of your iLife. Jesus. And Windows does it so well, Microsoft rolls out fixes all the time that practically never require you to so much as lift a finger.

3. Lack of Software
This one is so obvious I hesitate putting it on the list, but it is also so real, painful, and at the heart of the problem it would be criminal to not mention: Apple is a barren wasteland of software. Basically, if the software retails for $200+ on Windows, chances are the company decided to port it for Macintosh as well. But all those millions of little, low-cost to free applications that make a computer fun/useful to own are missing. Programs that help me tune my piano, design circuits, watch unusual video formats, etc are mysteriously absent on the Great Big Internet. If I was born into Apple I wouldn’t even think such things could exist. This is one of the great things about computers – they end up letting you try more things than you ever imagined, literally. Apple, on the other hand, only lets you do things you probably already knew about. And since Apple doesn’t have the numbers to make a cheap piece of software profitable, you will be charged an arm and a leg for what is already available. Seriously, you can buy two PC’s and a better software library (one for your lady friend) for the price of a few decent Apple applications.

2. iTunes
Never have so few features done so much to piss me off as iTunes. Basically iTunes attempts to accomplish 3 tasks – organize, play, and sync media. As far as organization goes, it does an OK job until you need to do something other than amass every piece of sound and video on your computer. Lets say you make a presentation that includes clips of people interacting with clients (lame), or the different sounds a hotdog can make (awesome). If you accidentally let iTunes play these files (task #2) then you have now inadvertently added them into your iTunes library. Now when you let iTunes play on random, possibly while entertaining said lady friends, your catalog of amazing music will be interspersed with a hotdog rhythmically hitting a crystal vase. Not good, Apple, not good at all.

The problem multiplies when you decide to move the hotdog project over to a new folder that will hold all your avant garde meat projects. Now when you play them iTunes will create a new entry for hotdog-against-chilled-glass.mp3 without removing the old one. After a few months, your catalog is clouded with nonexistent files reminding you of sad, horribly failed projects.

I could do an entire article on why iTunes is wrong, but I’ll stop here and say only this: just because you ask your computer to play a clip doesn’t mean you want to hear about it the rest of your life. Something was already created to organize media, something that has been studied and improved upon for decades, and that is called your file browser. Microsoft understands that, and turns the table on Apple ease-to-use. Work on that, and don’t treat media files like they were somehow iTunes’ property.

1. The Commercials
You know what? I loved the first dozen Apple vs PC ads. It was awesome to see Windows getting railed, I wanted Apple to succeed. Windows had/has so many flaws, but they are covering ground fast. I don’t see that in Apple. I see Apple making badass glass screens and tight low level interfaces that make it easier to work with limited, sometimes outdated or crappy software. At least try a new approach and fix some of the problems. Right now, my bets are on Windows 7. Now, if Windows wasn’t such a bitch…

0. BONUS ROUND: Keeping Context
If you own a Mac, I want you to open a Finder window, then come back to this webpage. OK, now flip to another desktop and then flip back. Guess what? You probably can’t see this text. That’s because Apple puts your Finder window above everything else, regardless how you arranged it. That’s something I would expect from an amateur, home grown operating system. Not from the user interface gurus paid $100k+ with Apple money. Jesus Christ. While we are talking about context, let’s open GarageBand. Congratulations, after you’ve created your project try clicking on something that isn’t a piano or a knob. Nothing happening? That’s the way it was designed. While everyone else has adopted contextual menus, a great way of learning the things you can perform on an object, Mac has gone 1990 and left that kind of capability conspicuously absent. What’s that, Apple? We can’t handle the truth? Try changing a file icon, try doing anything beyond the three preset operations Apple intended and you will hurt.

In der Raubkatzen-Reihe des beliebten Betriebssystemes gab es bisher “Cheetah” (10.0), ”Puma” (10.1), “Jaguar” (10.2), Panther® (10.3), Tiger® (10.4), Leopard® (10.5) und den aktuellen “Snow Leopard”® (10.6).

These are my top 5 programs that will bring out the inner geek in you and your Apple Mac.

• Geekbench
Geekbench is a benchmarking tool, as the name suggests. It’s free and can be downloaded onto most current Macs. Close all applications and it’ll measure the power. Then compete with a friend!

• Google Earth
OK – this might seem really, really obvious, but it isn’t. You see, on its own, Earth is a great tool for everyone, but under the Tools menu there is a realistic flight simulator game. It requires great skill and precision!

• Grapher
A graph drawing program simply built in to OS X. It’s under Utilities. Most people have never heard of it (but you had).

• Lockdown
A freebie (you can see where I’m going here) that locks down a Mac and whenever someone does anything to it, it sounds an alarm which is immutable, flashes the screen, emails a photo of the intruder and requires the correct paired Apple Remote to unlock. Applies to USB, keyboard, mouse, laptop power leads, FireWire, WiFi, whatever… And customisable too.

• Deeper
Use this utility to change many, many hidden settings on a Mac. You might want to modify the login screen’s information, change window minimisation behaviour, or a whole host of other things.

Enjoy! All are free – to the best of my knowledge – and all can be found on Sourceforge or via Google, if your Mac doesn’t have them already…

A new Trojan horse for Mac OS X?

As Numaan points out on the SophosLabs blog, a ‘new’ Trojan horse for the Apple Mac OS X operating system has been discussed in the security community for the last few days.

This tutorial should explain briefly how to include and use the Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB

This tutorial should explain briefly how to include and use the Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB) in a C++ Xcode Project in OSX. Intel has put together an excellent tutorial that explains the basics, but it assumes that you have the libraries already included in your project.

1) Download the source code from a stable TBB release (e.g. tbb22_20090809oss_src.tgz).

2) Unpack it and run “make”.

3) Create a new project in Xcode, e.g. Command Line Tool from type C++ stdc++. The project in this example is called “tbbWorkbench”.

4) Open Finder and copy the tbb folder into your project’s folder:

5) Go back into Xcode and link the libraries “libtbb.dylib” and “libtbbmalloc.dylib” from the tbb22_20090809oss/build/macos_intel64_gcc_cc4.2.1_os10.6.2_release/ folder that is inside your project folder to your target.

6) Add the “Header Search Path” (tbb22_20090809oss/include) and make sure that you always search user paths.

7) Now, add a “New Copy Files Build Phase” where you copy the both TBB .dylib files to your “Products Directory”. This is needed as otherwise the libraries won’t be found during runtime and you’ll face a “Error from Debugger: Cannot access memory at address 0×0″.

8 ) As a final step, you can now e.g. insert the first sample code from the Intel Tutorial and you’re ready to go !

Snow Leopard has barely gotten its paws wet, and now news comes that Apple (s aapl) is already worki

Snow Leopard has barely gotten its paws wet, and now news comes that Apple (s aapl) is already working on its replacement. It’s not really surprising, since Apple is basically always either working on the next iteration of its products or releasing them, but still, it does whet the appetite for the next version of OS X.

The suggestion of the new operating system appeared in an entry posted early this morning in a change database for “launchd,” an open source framework that controls the booting of OS X and administers running processes. The new entry includes an error message with the string “11A47″ in it, which is a reference to what version of Mac OS X is being used.

Previous versions of OS X have all followed the same numbering scheme. The number at the start of the string references which version of OS X is being used, with the letter indicated the minor release number and finally another number at the end indicating the development progress of said minor release. So, for example, Snow Leopard at release was represented by the string 10A432, and Leopard was 9A571. 11A47, then, would seem to indicate that an early build of 10.7 was being used.

According to MacRumors, the “47″ part of that number would suggest that Apple has already been working on the new version of OS X for at least a couple of months now. It’s still very early days, though, and probably even a long way off from a release to the developer community. We saw a two-year span between 10.4 and 10.5, but only a one year gap between the release of 10.5 and 10.6, because 10.6 represented mainly performance upgrades and refinements. Chances are, 10.7 is at least another year and a half off.

No news yet on what to expect in 10.7, although there is reason to believe that the upcoming iteration of OS X will bring more major changes than the last update. Traditionally, Apple introduces far more GUI and basic functionality changes in major point releases, but Snow Leopard was a special exception to that rule, a fact reflected in the price. It’s possible that Apple will release OS 11 at some point, but as of right now, it seems likely that it will continue with the current numbering scheme.

Anything in particular you’d like to see in 10.7? Maybe something you were disappointed wasn’t there in OS X 10.6? Personally, I still think Finder could use some further fine-tuning, but otherwise I’m at a loss at the moment.
