Just an average weekend for us in Shadow Rising.

Run a few heroics.

Do some dailies.

Kill a mother fucking dragon.

Note the snazzy new title?

I know, I know, we took forever to get around to doing it.

What’s hilarious is it looks like I’ve missed every other Sarth-with-drakes-up run with the guild.

Now that’s efficiency.

Screw getting each individual achievement one at a time and work my way up to 3 drakes.

Pfffft.

So how did it go down?

Egads, painfully.

The new guy (and I’m going to have to come up with something else to call him) volunteered to lead the raid.

I’ll be honest, I’ve been getting a little burnt out on organizing and leading just about every raid we do so I was more than happy to let someone else call the shots for an evening.

Not to mention, he’s done this on other toons and knows all the ins and outs to this achievement.

We were short having enough people logged in so grabbed a shaman out of LFG so we could have Bloodlust.

(That’s BLOODLUST, not heroism or whatever it’s called on the other side. BLOODLUST. RAWR.)

Grabbed a pally tank out of guild and plunked him down in front of the dragon.

The guy did great, for what he could do. Someone will be speaking with him shortly and walking him through why it’s best not to have all 71 points in the protection tree.

So after about an hour, the pally gives up.

We swap him out and have one of the DPS switch to his warrior tank and replaced the DPS spot with a guildmate that logged on.

Another hour goes by.

We’re swapping people around as they log in, but just can’t get a decent composition together and we’re stuck with this lame shaman.

The shaman wasn’t pulling in any DPS to be writing home about and *he* was the one complaining the DPS wasn’t high enough…

Boom!

Yeah, so we’ve been here two hours… think it’s just time to call it. But it was great of you to come out and fail with us.

Took another hour to get the tweaks in the method down pat and to get lucky breaks on the flame walls.

We were running a caster/melee split which was not making anything easier so it required even more effort to get the planets to align with the flame walls and void zones.

Oh, and we had to talk the holy pally into actually moving out of the way of flame walls so his bubble would be available to use in the bubble/divine sacrifice combo after the tank’s cooldowns were blown. L2 dodge flame walls. =P

Now, we’ve dropped bosses in the past.

And I’m sure that collectively, we’ve spent more than 3 hours on some bosses. (Hodir comes to mind…)

And when they die there is always the rush of “Yay! Dead boss! Lootz? What’s next?”

And then we just move on. No one lingers at the corpse. No one cheers.

But this one was different.

I’m hoping Icecrown is like this. That when we finally get a boss down we are so elated about it that the loot is forgotten until we’ve all gathered around for a photo. I hope our guild forums get filled with these.

Just in case anyone was curious, here’s the damage for the kill:

Loot is being handed out and it’s time for the drake roll.

One of the guys said when we started that he didn’t care about the drake.

I was a little surprised that he rolled on it.

He beat my 3.

(God my raid rolls suck, this is why I’m glad we are on loot council or I would NEVER get a drop.)

We asked him to show us the drake in Dal but he just logged off.

Then the next time he was on, he was saying how ugly it was.

If you win something that you know half the raid was drooling over after you state that you could care less about the item, don’t make disparaging remarks about said item. It takes that knife and twists it so slowly… “I have something that you wanted and I don’t even like it. Neener neener. I’m banging a supermodel but going to complain that her left tit is slightly larger than her right. Neener neener.”

I would have loved it and hugged it and called it George.

I just upgraded my BlackBerry Storm to OS 5.0 and let me tell you, it rocks my world! 

To start, it works, which is more than I can say for the three previous attempts from Research In Motion.  It’s snappy and responsive. They’ve added quite a few features as well.  Now there are conversation threads in SMS messages. It used to do it before, but now it is much easier to read.  They’ve colorized the background, just enough.  The response time is a factor of 1,000 faster.  You hit something, it does it.  Which, as users we should just be able to expect that a device should do this.  Moreover, the data just seems faster.  It’s probably not, but the display and rendering engines are working so much faster, it seems the internet is screaming. 

A couple of drawbacks, installation time for mine, which is on an enterprise server took nearly an hour, which is a bit long in the tooth.  It’s not deployable through BlackBerry Professional to the best of my knowledge, which would have been handy.  It may be through BlackBerry Enterprise, but I don’t think we are going to spend that kind of money. 

Overall, it seems Research in Motion realized that they were going to lose market share to the iPhone and the Droid based devices. Which is good, a bit of competition is very helpful.  I’m happy

Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management for Google, explained Google’s vision for Chrome OS Netbooks to a room full of journalists last week, revealing, perhaps unintentionally, that Google is focused on more than just the software.

Chrome OS is aimed at netbook users and is designed for fast, lightweight computing. Pichai’s presentation, and much of the resulting press coverage, focused on usability issues, drawing obvious comparisons to Microsoft.

Yet, as CNET’s Tom Krazit picked up, Pichai revealed with the single sentence “We really want software to understand the underlying hardware,” that for Google, reinventing the personal computing experience is about more than just the software.

I don’t know as yet, what the many developers who have started playing around with Chrome OS since the open-source code was released think, but I do know this: Chrome OS is designed to push applications up to the cloud.

When consumers come to choosing their devices to access this cloud, they will need to know that the cloud they are accessing resides in a part of the stratosphere that is always on.

We don’t just need High Availability. We need it available full stop. Guaranteed Ultra High Availability will make or break the user experience, and therefore the business model. Reinventing the personal computing experience is indeed, about more than just the software.

Kunstner Arne Mæland har etter hvert mange bronseskulpturer bak seg. Buekorpsgutt og kunstløperske har han blant annet laget tidligere i full størrelse.

- Jeg har hatt denne skulpturen i tankene lenge, men den ble først ferdigstøpt i Mandal og hentet til Os for noen uker siden, sier Arne Mæland til RadiOs.no.

Selv om skulpturen er ferdigstøpt, har Mæland langt igjen før den er ferdig.

- Jeg har en plan med denne skulpturen. Nå bestiller jeg stein som skal fungere som en sokkel for skateren. Tanken min er å bygge opp buede benker i stein på begge sider av skulpturen slik at det ferdige arbeidet kan fungere som en liten møteplass, sier Mæland.

Hvor den ender opp til slutt er så langt uvisst, men kanskje plassen utenfor Oseana kunne være et bra sted?

Politiet fikk i natt melding om at en bilist stakk fra betalingen av bensin fra Er-An på Røykenes.

- Det kom melding klokken 23.26 om at en bil hadde stukket av fra bensinstasjonen på Røykenes uten å betale for bensin som var fylt, sier operasjonsleder Ronny Lenthfør til RadiOs.no.

Dreier det seg om store summer?

- Det skal ha vært fylt for rundt 200 kroner, sier Lenthfør.

Vi nærmer oss desember og advent og da blir det vel lys i ”juletreet” på Borgafjellet igjen?

Os kulturutvikling har de siste årene sørget for å glede både folk på bakkenivå og i luften med lyssetting av bardunene på Borgafjellet. Lys blir det selvsagt også i år.

- Vi var en liten gjeng oppe på lørdag og sjekket at alt er klart før tenning av ”Borgalyset” igjen til helgen. Det må gjøres noen justeringer og skiftes litt lyspærer, men på søndag 29. november klokken 14 tenner vi lysene igjen, sier Arne Mæland fra Os kulturutvikling til RadiOs.no.

I have two computers. A five year old laptop, still going strong with the original operating system installed on it. It is pretty bare in terms of ad ons and other apps on it, but it is functional. It works as a writing implement and as a way to show vids (via the HD or the DVD drive) on the go. I also have a newer, flashier desktop, just over a year old, with all the original bits, plus lots of funky ad ons. It really is a souped up machine.

Anyhow, switched on my laptop this morning to do my blog and when logging into gimpspace, (that link will soon no longer work) I got this message:

All good things come to an end. My computer is no longer cool enough to hang out with the hip young things and Tom. So sod it, I can no longer be bothered with myspace. It looks like another ‘bye-bye’ alongside my facebook exit. But unlike the facebook drop out, this has been forced upon me by myspace itself. I was quite happy to keep the account ticking over and to copy and paste my blog onto my profile but as I have no urgent need to upgrade my laptop, then my hand is forced and I must say toodles to ‘Tom & Co’.

Interestingly, ‘myspace’ gave me my first outlet online. Long before I actually ‘made’ my own websites, or even got blogging seriously, my outlet to the wider world was via myspace. It is with a slight twinge that I am deleting this account, but with regards to the bigger picture, who really cares? My laptop has outlived my gimpspace account. Let us see what else it outlives…

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 has recently been announced with the awesome inclusion of the Android OS, but with multiple brands jumping on the bandwagon is Android treading a familiar and dangerous path?

Android operating systems are infiltrating the world’s handsets. Starting quietly on the innocuous HTC, the monster OS is sneaking its way onto giant brands such as Samsung, Philips, Motorola and soon Sony Ericsson. The consolidation of multiple brands to a single OS has rarely been seen before and is a testament to the usability of the system. It’s also a unified backing against the brilliant iPhone, whose exclusive operating system is showing no signs of migration and threatened to dominate the market before the multi-tasking Android made a case for itself as a serious contender. Placing Android alongside Palm’s WebOS, there are seemingly no other platforms which present a decent alternative to the iPhone’s utility and ease of use.

Frighteningly, the only previous operating system to successfully migrate between multiple brands is the limited and stagnant Symbian. Its original and usable design got stuck in the mud and was incapable of progressing at the same rate as the hardware; a bit like a Bugatti Veyron with a wind up choke or Michael Bolton. With the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 comes the responsibility of power, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor lurks inside the recently announced Android phone. Surprisingly the X10 is only going to run Android Donut, placing it firmly in the rear view mirror of the Motorola Droid and its Android Eclair upgrade despite possessing a sizeable chunk more power.

The very fact that the Eclair upgrade exists is proof that Android is still very much on the move, let’s hope that other brands see fit to employ the added goodness that Google, Android’s developer, have granted its OS. However, if major hardware makers like Sony Ericsson are unwilling to adopt upgraded operating systems, there’s a chance that development could slow just as it did with Symbian. Here’s hoping that Google doesn’t drop the ball on this OS and continues to push the boundaries of mobile technology or it might become a dinosaur like Symbian.

Presentato Google Chrome OS

Si tratta di un sistema operativo basato su una piattaforma linux che nasce con l’idea di un sistema pensato quasi esclusivamente per internet, tutto il sistema operativo un un grande browser che ingloba la navigazione web, social network, mail, video, musica, documenti.
Promette di essere molto leggero e stabile.
Ecco il video che ne anticipa le caratteristiche, ma la commercializzazione non dovrebbe iniziare prima del 2010.

A few days ago Google gave a sneak into its new OS revealing some very interesting ideas. Though some who aren’t into “cloud-computing” may not like it.

Google has stated that they will be releasing their Chrome operating system on custom built net books. The OS is said to “boot up in seconds” and immediately be connected to the internet. The computer will be much faster because everything will be online. Even the data.

Maybe this can go without saying, it seems that the goal of Chrome OS is to make the desktop basically a thin client.  I understand the move, if we truly want all activity to exist in the cloud, make the operating system exist basically in the cloud.  It’s a simple idea for a lofty goal, and if anyone could pull it off, it’s Google. 

I’d imagine adoption won’t be too swift, and it may in the end suffer the same fate as the Linux Desktop, for entirely different reasons.  In essence, we the users would be entrusting all our data to the cloud (read Google).  And that should give us pause for concern.  Not that Google has a reputation for being evil, or for that matter the propensity for evil.  But with that having been said, there is something to say about isolation, about privacy.  There is something reassuring about storing your files locally, your personal information and what not.  Albeit, that reassurance may prove to be false, it indeed has some level of truth.  It may prove in the near term we are not ready for such a paradigm shift of computing.  Some day, it would make sense that a computer, as we know them today, should be nothing more than an internet access device.  I don’t think the user is ready, I don’t think the internet is ready.

I don’t intend to be a stick in the mud.  I’m not fully satisfied with Windows, Mac, or Linux, but I’m not ready to give complete control to an outside party.  Even though we are restricted by our operating systems, they lie within our realm of control.  We choose when and how to connect to the network, what is allowed out, and what is kept private.  There is most assuredly something to be said about that.

That being said, it looks completely awesome, Chromium OS that is.  It’s light, sleek, responsive and fun.  When mission meets vision, it’s amazing what an organziation like Google can produce. As stated above, it appears they are trying to turn personal computers into internet access appliances, if that is their mission, then job well done I say.  It works solidly.  It requires nearly no configuration, no special knowledge, and is, well, idiot proof. 

Google has hit the nail they were aiming for.  I just don’t know if it’s a nail that should be struck yet.

But – having seen a link on engagdet.com to a VMware download I decided to ”takle the easy route” and  use the .vmdk file

Creating a VM to run Chrome OS

Based on various posts on the web, it looked the “best chance” of getting this work ing was to create a VM in VirtualBox.
So, I installed VirtualBox and setup a VM.

Web comments I read indicate that selecting Linux 2.6  as the version yields best results

I opted for a minimal amount of Ram.

I used the .vmdk file (chrome-os-0.4.22.8-gdgt.vmdk) from http://gdgt.com/google/chrome-os/download/
and setup VirtualBox to point to this file

En livredd person på Søfteland tok kontakt med politiet mandag kveld med melding om at noen var i ferd med å bryte seg inn ved å slå inn en dør med hammer.

– Vi fikk melding klokken 17.40 fra en person som sa han var livredd. Han hakket tenner og var skrekkslagen. Han fortalte at noen utenfor var i ferd med å bryte seg inn en dør med hammer, sier operasjonsleder Oddvar Nordfonn til RadiOs.no.

- Vi sendte ut hundepatruljen fra Bergen via Nesttun og hadde samtidig kontakt med mannen Hans første melding var at han holdt til i en leilighet i Arna, men etter å ha blitt roet litt ned forandret han adressen til en kjellerleilighet ved Vindalsvatnet på Søfteland.

Klokken 18.11 kom hundepatruljen frem til stedet og da var det kaotisk der..

- Det viser seg at ingen skal ha slått inn døren, men at en person skal ha kommet inn i kjellerleiligheten og slått til vedkommende som var på besøk der. Han skal ha hatt en hammer i hånden, men denne er ikke blitt brukt, sier Nordfonn.

Hundepatruljen avsluttet arbeidet på stedet klokken 18.35.

- Patruljen fra Fana melder at saken ble ordnet på stedet og at den er endret fra å gjelde innbrudd til å gjelde ordensforstyrrelser, sier Nordfonn.

Det er en vurdering om at det å ta vare på hverandre er mer viktig enn OL-medaljer. For en idrettsleder som gjør det Mueller har gjort kan i hvert fall ikke jeg være enig med. Uansett hvor flink han er, sier Eriksen til Dagbladet.

Hva med Hans Trygve Kristiansen?

- Han kan være aktuell i trenerkabalen. Jarle Pedersen fra Fana er nok mer aktuell. Han er tidligere landslagsløper og er far til et 17 år gammel stortalent som debuterte i Heerenveen for en uke siden. Han har fulgt med skøytesporten i mange år nå. Jeg ser på ham som en god kandidat.

- Det er en tillitserklæring, men jeg har ikke fått noen formell henvendelse fra skøyteforbundet, sier Jarle Pedersen til BA.

- Er du interessert i jobben om den skulle bli ledig?

- Jeg velger å vente med å kommentere dette ytterligere til forbundsstyret har behandlet saken, sier han.

Når Essoen på Os holder stengt i dag uten å annonsere på forhånd så starter spekulasjonene.

Det har kommet flere henvendelser angående Essoen på Os som har stengt av hele stasjonen i dag.

Når vi tar kontakt med stasjonen er meldingen at de holder stengt på grunn av vedlikehold.

- Vi har vedlikehold på stasjonene i dag og holder derfor stengt, sier en ansatt ved stasjonen.

Hvorfor har dere ikke annonsert om dette på forhånd.

- Vi har fått beskjed fra sentralt hold om å ikke annonsere det, sier vedkommende videre.

- Stasjonen er stengt på grunn av utbedringer av en strømtavle og dette vil ta ca ett døgn, sier assisterende informasjonsdirektør ved Esso Norge AS, Eirik Haug.

Hvorfor er ikke stengingen annonsert på forhånd?

- Det kan jeg ikke svare deg på, sier Haug.

Proprio così: stando a quanto riferisce The consumerist, un sito statunitense di tutela dei consumatori, ci sono due casi in cui la richiesta di assistenza in garanzia da parte di proprietari di computer è stata negata con una motivazione quantomeno bizzarra: “Contaminazione da fumo”.

Sembra uno scherzo ma è tutto vero e l’azienda in questione non è catena di assemblatori locali, ma quella più cool e innovativa del panorama tecnologico: la Apple. E i portatili in questione sono i popolari Macbook e iMac. Insomma, il fumo nuoce alla salute del computer e si perde la garanzia se chi lo usa ha il vizio delle sigarette.

Nonostante nel contratto di garanzia non si faccia alcun riferimento esplicito alle sigarette come comportamento pericoloso per la salute del computer, la casa di Cupertino, alla richiesta di chiarimenti, ha replicato così: la nicotina fa parte della lista delle sostante dannose stilata dall’Occupational Safety and Health Administration. La casa di Steve Jobs ha poi sottolineato che non chiederà ai suoi dipendenti di riparare qualcosa mettendo a rischio la loro salute. Questo perché, secondo gli esperti, il computer di un fumatore all’interno si può paragonare a un posacenere sporco. A parte la puzza e la polvere, l’accumulo di catrame è in grado mandare in tilt il pc.

I due casi di cui parla The consumerist si sono verificati qualche anno fa in due diversi Stati americani. Il primo risale all’aprile 2007, quando il pc venne portato in un Apple Store a West Des Moines, nell’Iowa: un anno in assistenza, poi la risposta che era stato usato in una casa di fumatori e questo faceva decadere la garanzia. Non solo. L’Apple si è rifiutata di riparare anche a pagamento il Mac, per “i rischi alla salute dovuti al fumo passivo”.

Sulla stessa falsariga il secondo caso. I tecnici hanno assicurato prima un intervento nel giro di 48-72 per l’iMac che dava problemi, ma dopo qualche giorno hanno informato il cliente che il computer non poteva funzionare “perché contaminato”. Contaminato dal fumo di sigarette, s’intende, che viene considerato un “pericolo biologico”.

I protagonisti dei due casi hanno scritto direttamente a Steve Jobs, il fondatore della Apple, ottenendo di nuovo un no come risposta.
