About an hour bus ride outside of Oslo is a little village called DRØBAK. It was a toss up whether we would venture out on Mon or Tues. Monday was a wash out because of the all-day rain. So we decided to see what Tue morning would bring. The forecast wasn’t hopeful but you never know. As it turned out it was a sunny day.

DRØBAK is known as the “Christmas Town” and for its public decorations. The town was in full swing getting the decorations up. It seemed all of the buildings around town have tree holders for decorating with these small lighted trees. DRØBAK was once Oslo’s Winter Harbor.

Pick a number, any number. We walked down by the water’s edge and came upon this little shop that featured hand carved signs, especially house numbers.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas . . . A visit to the Christmas House, which is open all year round. It is chock full of all kinds of Christmas decorations.

The village is small and quaint and they’re just getting ready for Christmas. So, it was pretty quiet. We stopped at a little cafe called Hos Hanna for lunch. I had the rib special with red cabbage – it’s a popular dish that is served this time of year for the holidays. The “rib” is really more of a roast pork and served with a nice piece of crackling!!! It was delish! Mick opted for the tuna sandwich and found out that a “double-decker” sandwich here is really a sandwich as we call it in the States – two pieces of bread. The sandwiches here are normally served open-faced.

Off shore is a small island where Oscarsborg fortress, it dates back to the 1600s. With the short days and a late lunch we didn’t think we would have a lot of light left to explore the fortress and its grounds. We’ll go back another time and start there. In the summer they hold open-air concerts and complete operas on the island. There is even a spa, hotel and restaurant if you want to stay overnight.

I am in the humanities library at the University of Oslo. I am terribly excited. I just had a chat with the people who established the postcolonial literature subject I’m going to teach. They are so lovely! As soon as I stepped onto the campus it felt like coming home. A university campus!!! With courtyards and large square glass-fronted buildings and students in coats and scarves! The library smells like old books. There are high windows above the shelves and sunlight slants in through the blinds. I am sitting opposite The Riverside Chaucer, two shelves away from Peter Carey’s Collected Short Stories. (This is a small library; they have a larger one a few buildings down.) The musty book smell and the yellow sunlight make my heart skip. This is where I want to be.

Utsikt over Youngstorget.

No one’s ever doubted Oslo’s cool factor. “Trendy” is hardly the word to describe the coolness of this capital city with a great college town vibe. The capital of Norway’s capital of cool is the Grünerløkka neighborhood, a former mill town with a surprisingly cheery exterior. Like in a lot of post-industrial parts of town, when the factories left, the creative types moved in to Grünerløkka and brought with them a revitalization that makes the industrial look of the neighborhood somehow bright and whimsical. There’s no shortage of cafes and unique shops, attracting a crowd that is youthful and professional at the same time, so you can feel like you’re on the cutting edge of something while simultaneously feeling totally safe.

We’re happy to offer a whole block of super cool Grünerløkka apartments on our website. We think it’s better than staying downtown even though downtown is practically within spitting distance–either a 15 minute walk or a quick tram ride. We’ve listed a nice collection of studios, 1 bedrooms and even spacious 2 bedroom apartments in the heart of Grünerløkka all with fresh and modern interiors. We especially like the potted plants that seem right at home in each of these apartments and the balconies are great for watching some of the coolest Oslovians walking their dogs in their cool neighborhood drinking their excellent coffee. The ground floor apartments have nice little private terraces and in the spring and summer months, the leaves are practically coming through the windows, providing a lushness you rarely get in such an urban area.

Now’s as good a time as any to visit Oslo and check out Grünerløkka. The leaves outside may have dropped, but these leafy interiors are just the thing to hold you over until spring.

It’s been brought to my attention that the bicycle activist and author, Chris Carlsson from San Francisco, is coming to Scandinavia this week. He will be talking about the importance of social change – how movements and social activism can reach immediate change towards greener societies.

The event in Copenhagen will actually be already tomorrow, Wednesday. I might be going, so give me a call if you’ll join in. The one in Oslo is on Saturday, and in december he’ll be in Stockholm. I urge everyone to consider it.

“American author Chris Carlsson comes to to discuss the ways in which people are creating alternatives to capitalism in the here and now. He argues that DIY activities such as free software and guerilla gardening point the way towards a profound social transformation.

KlimaX member Oskar Larsson will talk about the connection between capitalism and climate change. He will de-mystify some of the COP15 mechanisms and argue that the COP15 process does not present a real solution to climate change, but will only provide a green image for business as usual.” (Kilde: modkraft.dk)

I am following up on my earlier post on American artists in Norway, spurred by reading Sigrid Undset’s trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-22) and my husband Jerry’s visit to Norway. In addition to John Singer Sargent and Willard Metcalf, some other American artists who went to Norway include William Trost Richards (1833-1905), who painted the Romsdalsfjord on Norway’s central coast; his daughter Anna Richards Brewster (1870-1952); and the German-born artist Hermann Herzog (1832–1932) who settled in America sometime between 1869 and 1871 (see picture at right). Then, there are several Norwegian-born artists who immigrated to America, but kept ties with their homeland. Among these are John Olson Hammerstad (1842-1925), Paul Lauritz (1889-1976), and, of course, Jonas Lie (1880-1940).

Born in the southern Norwegian town of Moss, Lie grew up near Oslo, moved when he was twelve to Paris, and a year later joined his family in New York, which would be his permanent home. He attended the Ethical Culture School and went on to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. Also extremely peripatetic, Lie painted vibrant, realist landscapes and marines in many locales including Maine; the Adirondacks; Cape Ann, Massachusetts; and Passamaquoddy Bay, New Brunswick, Canada. He was drawn to water, mountains, snow, and boats—subjects that suggest that he sought motifs that reminded him of his homeland and perhaps eased his homesickness. The latter was temporarily cured during an eighteen-month stay in Norway in 1909-10, when he visited Oslo and Lillehammer and spent part of his time in Gudbrandsdalen—the location of Jørundgård, the home of Kristin, Undset’s stoic protagonist.

Jonas Lie, "Quiet Town, Norway," 1909, oil on canvas, 26 x 35 inches

As Carol Lowrey wrote in “Jonas Lie (1880-1940): Painter-Poet of His Era,” in William H. Gerdts and Carol Lowrey, Jonas Lie (1880-1940) (New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC, 2006): “The rustic dwellings and timber-frame farmhouses in Quiet Town, Norway obviously struck a chord with Lie in terms of his Nordic heritage, for he went on to decorate interiors for several of his patrons, such as Malcolm D. Whitman of New York, for whom he designed a “splendid Viking room.” (21) Quiet Town, featuring a two-story Stue of log and stave construction and a grass roof, seems out of Kristin’s world, and one can imagine it as the “Saemund house,” which Undset described as “an ancient little hearth building, warm and snug: the timbers were so roughly hewn that there were only four beams to each wall,” (III, 86) while the scene evokes a courtyard Undset described where “two serving maids were tending to the smallest children. They were sitting against the wall of the women’s house, basking in the sun. Above their heads the evening light gleamed like molten gold on the small glass windowpane.” (III, 91)

Jonas Lie, "The Fleet," ca. 1925, oil on canvas, 30 x 45 inches

Other Norwegian scenes by Lie, some rendered in the 1920s, including The Fleet (at right), Norwegian Fjord Scene, another work entitled Norwegian Fjord Scene of 1925, and Norwegian Village (below), reveal that he continued to capture the “glittering light” and the “verdant smell in the air,” experienced by Kristin. It is also interesting to compare Lie’s Norwegian paintings with his American images of similar subjects (below), to see how he brought the sensibility of his native land to his adopted one and vice versa, or how differently he portrayed each.

Jonas Lie, "Norwegian Village," ca. 1909-10, oil on canvas, 43 1/4 x 50 1/2 inches

Jonas Lie, "American Factory Town, Winter," oil on canvas, 41 x 35 inches

Lie’s work continues to have a following among those who have made a journey similar to his. At the time of our 2006 Jonas Lie exhibition at the gallery, we collaborated with the American-Scandinavian Foundation and our invitation to its members received an overwhelming response: more than four hundred people attended the show’s opening, many having to wait outside in the dead of winter until there was space in the gallery to fit them.

To Jerry: I hope, given the incredible beauty of Norway, as expressed in Undset’s books and in paintings of the land, that on your own Norwegian travels, you get to focus on the “nature” part of Norway rather than only on that of the “mind.”

Caveat: I’m sure this post only begins to consider the interconnections between American artists and Norway in the period I’ve focused on, but I hope it will open up new roads for further knowledge and information.

Postscript: Last night I took my two boys to a Mexican restaurant; the table next to ours consisted of a large lively group or people visiting New York from Oslo.

Finally: I started reading a novel someone recommended, Per Petterson’s Out Stealing Horses (2007), which turns out to be by a Norwegian author. It’s descriptive passages remind me of Kristin’s world.

I have heard a couple of variations of these analogies. I do not like them. I think they are simply absurd.

At last PDC, “M” was to “SQL” what C is to Assembler. This year it was, what VB is to C. And now I even read this:

The code name “M” language is like a more manageable (though more limited) form of Transact-SQL, the language normally used to describe data schema and values.

Kraig Blockschmidt, Microsoft Data Development Technologies: Past, Present, and Future

“M” has some overlaps with T-SQL, ok. But far from every concept in “M” can be translated into T-SQL. What about structural subtyping? Types without identities? Polymorphic references and function arguments? Languages/DSLs? Ordered collections? Lot’s more.

And only a very small, although useful subset of T-SQL maps to “M”. Also most of the translation to SQL is opinionated, not natural.

What the schema and values part of M compares much more to, is XML and XSD.

Would you even try to compare XML to T-SQL?

For en mandags kveld må man nemlig sloss over apparatene.

Norway is up to appease Colombo as the Tamil Tigers are out of the picture and the only way to do this is abetting Colombo’s discrimination of Tamils in the line of Iran, Burma and China, writes Professor Øivind Fuglerud of the University of Oslo adding that a revealing cue comes from Norway insensitively sponsoring a Buddhist organisation to conduct a music festival on 27th November in Galle, timed to humiliate Tamils on the Heroes’ Day. Norway sat silently like a mouse in the final phase of the war. Now its ‘humanitarian’ aid helps the internment camps of captivity and death. In future Norway’s aid may be integral to Colombo’s military complex cum Buddhist temple infrastructure to dominate Tamil areas, he further says. Not surprisingly, Norway’s leading news agency, NTB, on Monday came out with biased reporting on the first ever democratically elected council of diaspora Tamils.

Koselige folk i grunn.

Back to my favorite concert location in Oslo, John Dee. This time for Chrome Division, this cool hea

Back to my favorite concert location in Oslo, John Dee. This time for Chrome Division, this cool heavy metal band from Norway having Shagrath and Lex Icon among members. But first on stage I got to see Lucid, also from Norway. I wasn’t able to find anything about them online but what I can tell you is that they have a very hot bass player. The big guy singing did a really god job and the female vocalist has a good voice, yet a tad too strident at times. But the 30 mins of show were entertaining. To get an impression for yourself, checkout the video here.

The main show started with some minutes of darkness and a scene with the curtains down, while we were hearing motorbike sounds and a suave woman voice announcing the band, like in this video. My surprise was the new singer. Apparently they replaced Eddie Guz with Shady Blue (aka Athera from Susperia). Good lucking guy and the voice is not bad at all. But I was so looking forward to hear the other guy sing. I had the chance though, since he came on stage to perform Trouble with the law.

All of them them put on the ‘bad guys’ look with their tight pants, fancy sharp shoes, leather jackets, hats, cigarettes, etc. And the singer kept changing his looks by adding or removing items. He did a good job at keeping the crowd entertained. He went to the front of the stage, shaking people hands, looking them in the eyes and having them singing. During one of the songs he managed to fall off the stage. Hope he didn’t get hurt too badly. Other show pieces that we didn’t miss were whiskey drinking, all guitarists gathering in front of the drums and making the same moves with the guitar, an extra guy showing up on stage during one of the songs, the microphone passed to some drunk guys in the audience to sing along. And it was one of the biggest moshpits I ever saw in Norway. I mean, Norwegian crowd is actually able to move and dance. Surprising. And annoying when you try to film or take photos.

The songs they played (in the order I remember them): Doomsday overture, Boys from the East, Raise your flag, Raven black Cadillac, Trouble with the Law, Lets hear it, Whole lotta Rosie, Rebel Yell and all ended with the great Serial Killer.
