3 – MagSafe – A qualidade impressiona, e pequenas sacadas fazem a diferença.

Introduction Build a Hackintosh Mac for Under $800 When you see headlines like this, it really makes

Introduction

Build a Hackintosh Mac for Under $800

When you see headlines like this, it really makes your consider trying out those Macs that everyone is talking so much about these days. One of the biggest barriers to switching to a Mac is that they are very expensive. So, why not take their operating system that has gotten such rave reviews, and put it on a cheaper PC computer, right?

Since Apple has made the switch to using Intel and nVidia technology in their computers, they’re essentially the same stuff that’s in PCs too. So why not? Because Apple doesn’t let you. Even if you bought the software, you are not allowed to. You agree to those terms when you use the product. I’ll better explain the ramifications, and headaches you will run into by making your own “Hackintosh” Computer.

————————————-

Apple Legal Stuff and Licensing

Here are just a few things to consider if you want to legitimately use the Mac Operating System on a non-Mac Computer. This is concerning the software license around the OS

Apple Legal – Software License for Snow Leopard

0. Geography

What The Paperwork Says:“11. Export Control. You may not use or otherwise export … Apple Software may not be exported or re-exported (a) into any U.S. embargoed countries or (b) to anyone on the U.S. Treasury Department’s list of Specially Designated Nationals or the U.S. Department of Commerce Denied Person’s List or Entity List. “

What It Really Says: “It’s not a matter of copyright or distribution laws if you can use our software. You have to be on the USA’s side.”

1. Liability for Damages

What The Paperwork Says:“In no event shall Apple’s total liability to you for all damages (other than as may be required by applicable law in cases involving personal injury) exceed the amount of fifty dollars ($50.00).”

What It Really Says: “We’re not responsible for the software we make. If for some reason it hurts you, the most we’ll give ya is $50!” — If you put it on another computer, you’re not in compliance and you dont get that $50!

2. Liability… Again

What The Paperwork Says:“SHOULD THE APPLE SOFTWARE OR SERVICES PROVE DEFECTIVE, YOU ASSUME THE ENTIRE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR OR CORRECTION.”

What It Really Says:“Should it be proven that our product is defective, your responsible for replacing and paying for the defective parts/repairs – even if it’s our fault” – Aside from your Mfr Warranty

3. Apple’s Rights With Your Computer

What The Paperwork Says:“Apple and its licensors reserve the right to change, suspend, remove, or disable access to any Services at any time without notice. In no event will Apple be liable for the removal of or disabling of access to any such Services. Apple may also impose limits on the use of or access to certain Services, in any case and without notice or liability.”

What It Really Says: “We can change, remove, or disable any part of your Mac computer at any time without any notice. And you can’t come after us for doing it.”

4. The Types of Hardware Allowed to Run OSX

What The Paperwork Says: “You agree not to install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-branded computer, or to enable others to do so. “

What It Really Says:“If you bought this software, you can’t put it on any machine. It has to be a Mac or else! And your not allowed to help or show others to do it”

5. General Licensing

What The Paperwork Says: “This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time.”

What It Really Says: “We license our Operating System no different than Microsoft.”

————————————-

How Apple Reacts to Hackintoshers

Apple’s Snow Leopard Update Zaps Bugs, Kills Hackintosh Netbooks

When it comes to Apple’s feelings towards people making their own Hackintosh computers, please reference the link above. That’s right. Apple will fix the bugs in their computers, and shut down you hackintosh if you update.

Regardless if you have purchased the software or not legitimately, it is not in compliance with their terms of use. Therefore illegal. Therefore not supported. Therefore it’s only going to cause you problems down the road – no matter what.

Apple will defend it’s intellectual property rights now matter what. They are no different than Microsoft in this case. Although they may find a way of warning you more “poetically,” like they did to the OSx86 project:

“Your karma check for today:
There once was a user that whined
His existing OS was so blind
He’d do better to pirate
An OS that ran great
But found his hardware declined.
Please don’t steal Mac OS
Really, that’s way uncool.
(C) Apple Computer, Inc.”

Apple’s code is often laced with lines that explicitly tell you not to pirate their software, too.

——————

Can I Buy A Pre-Installed Hackintosh?

Kinda-Sorta – But definitely not legally. There is a company called PsyStar that has blatantly disregarded Apple’s License Terms and started selling PCs pre-installed with Mac OS on it. Apple got angry. So Apple sued, and won. No big suprise there.

Apple Wins Big Against Psystar

In that case the judge also:

Ruled out a “fair use” defense for Psystar

Psystar also argued that it had the right to sell OS X as part of the first-sale doctrine. The judge ruled that any copies were not made with the permission of Apple

Noted the copies installed on the Open Computers, in some cases, did not even match up with the “backup copies” sold together with the computers

Said: “The inclusion of the copyrighted Mac OS X with the above-described additions and modifications makes Psystar’s product an infringing, derivative work”

“The judge also noted that Apple had not raised claims on breach of contract, induced breach of contract, trademark dilution, and infringement, and other breaches of California law.”

PsyStar has been left without a legal foot to stand on. The trial resumes December 14th. But clearly Apple has sent a precedent to all those other people out there distributing and selling their own “Hackintoshes” that the matter will not be taken lightly by them.

I don’t know what the execs at PsyStar were thinking, trying to win a legal battle like this against Apple – over their own intellectual property. Quite frankly it was plain stupid of them. For every copy of OSX they claimed to sell, they had a license agreement to go along with it. Not once did ANYONE at that company bother too look at it. Especially for a reseller to be selling illegitimate software, that doesn’t match the license on the machine.

That puts PsyStar in the “Pirate” category. There’s nothing wrong with being a pirate (or a ninja for that matter). But there’s something definitely wrong about cashing in on other people’s code, and exploiting another company’s intellectual property for your own personal gain.

——————

But Can It Be Done?!

Yes, my children it CAN be done. I’ll have a video up here in the coming days to show it can be done, and I can do it.

Unfortunately, with my experiences – it’s just plain simpler to install a netbook-ready distribution of linux on your computer. Like Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

Take Care,

Been toying with running OS X on my clearly non-Mac hardware. OS X 10.5.8 Leopard works great. It’s completely stable and runs really well.

Also bought a copy of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and have been trying to get that installed but have been hampered by an install issue.

STOP! Others having this issue need to know that it isn’t necessarily going to dash their hopes of running Snow Leopard on their Hackintosh!

My issue is that during the boot of the DVD, it hangs after a certain part. No panics, or errors. It just stops and sits there. The issue is because I’m using a newer ATI chipset–a chipset that IS supposed to be supported. But if you just need to get it up and running, you can swap in an NVidia card and it should work long enough to get Snow Leopard installed.

So to anyone else having this issue: there is hope! It’s not your disc or necessarily your hardware. Probably just the video card is incompatible.

I’m working on a fix and I’ll post updates about it.

Some of my local readers may have not seen this spat between Engadget and Miami New Times. Tim Elfrink of the New Times wrote a piece on the two brothers of Psystar, the company that makes Mac clones out of PC parts for half the price of a legit Apple laptop/desktop. Young second-gen Cuban immigrants from hardscrabble upbringings defy stereotypes by dressing well and take on an established American corporation by creating grey-market shadow products. It’s like BrandsMart but sexier because Apple is involved. Almost sounds like a made for TV movie on Univision, Telemundo or Spike TV. Well there is a lot some nerd rage out on the interwebs with some of the details.

From the Engadget article.

[...]there’s a quote here from Psystar founder Rudy Pedraza that simply leaps off the page:

Rudy scoffs at the idea he borrowed from the Hackintosh scene. “The first thing you have to do is unlearn everything you’ve read online about how to make this work,” Rudy says, “because it’s all wrong.”

Really? Because we think there’s a very large, very active hacking community out there that would disagree with you, Rudy.

“Robert cracked the code behind Apple Computer’s elegant operating system, OS X.” Yeah.

“Psystar legally buys the software…” That’s not in question, really. The issue is what happens after Psystar buys OS X, when it modifies and redistributes it. You know, the specific thing Apple’s suing about.

“[Apple] filed a 35-page lawsuit in California claiming Psystar was selling “unauthorized” versions of OS X.” Why is unauthorized in quotes? That’s exactly what Apple claims.

“As with Microsoft, which lost a multimillion-dollar antitrust decision in Europe in 2004, Apple is protecting an illegal monopoly, Psystar claims.” Psystar has already lost this part of its case in California, and in the new Florida case Psystar only claims Apple has a monopoly on “premium personal computers,” which pretty much invalidates the pricing argument and has driven the company to sell more expensive machines.

“Robert says he found his own way around Apple’s built-in security devices. The breakthrough meant that, among other things, the cheap machines were virtually immune to viruses and hackers.” This is simply not true. OS X is vulnerable to hackers in its shipping form, and hacking EFI doesn’t change that.

“Psystar pays full price – $29 – for each copy of OS that it installs on its computers.” $29 is the Snow Leopard upgrade price. The full price is $169 with iLife and iWork.

“What’s more, Apple holds that consumers who purchase an operating system don’t actually own the software…It’s a dubious-sounding arrangement that courts, at least so far, have upheld.” It’s not dubious to the courts, who’ve been upholding EULAs for over a decade across the country. (And striking some down, to be fair.)

“Pretty much anyone with basic computer knowledge can make a cloned Mac for just the cost of a full tank of gas in an SUV.” Actually, anyone can do this for free, without having to pay Psystar.

Now, don’t get us wrong — the personal story of Robert and Rudy Pedraza laid out in the article is moving stuff, but when the chips are down, we’re picking the hacker and enthusiast community over a couple guys trying to make a buck selling unlicensed software, and that Hackintosh quote struck us as impossibly arrogant and extremely foolish. The OSx86 community is already wary of Psystar, and we’re guessing no one’s going to rush forward the next time these jokers need some help.

I haven’t been taken to task for my own crappy writing so I don’t have a full understanding of what Tim is feeling. I’m sure it sucks to have such a big article that took time to be lambasted by faceless people on the internet. Well faceless except for the Engadget writer Nilay Patel. Tim was nice enough to respond in the comments of his article.

Hi Edwin –

Yes, Endgadget did such a good job of calling out our “errors” that they spelled my name wrong until I called them out on it. (Looks like the’ve fixed it now).

As for the other “errors” — I see 7 complaints about characterizations in the story and no complaints about factual errors. (Way to bust us for putting “unauthorized” in quotes. That’s because it’s “quoted” straight from the Apple lawsuit.)

There is only one charge about a supposed factual mistake: that Snow Leopard’s update runs at $29 but the whole package sells for $169 with the whole iLife package.

I’m not certain which version Psystar purchases, nor do I claim to know in the story — I was simply providing readers some context on what Apple charges for Snow Leopard updates at the Apple Store.

Tim

Comment by Tim Elfrink from Miami on Nov 11th, 2009, 18:55 pm

Well, Nilay didn’t take too kindly to his article being accused of shoddy writing either.

My reply is that it’s pretty ballsy to take on a copyright lawyer who’s been covering Psystar and its associated litigation since day one by bitching about a typo and trying to re-cast my criticisms of his piece as taking issue with his “characterizations” of the facts.

His entire piece is centered around a single, provably false “characterization”: that Robert and Rudy Pedraza developed the EFI hack that enables Mac OS X to run on non-Apple hardware without any reliance on the hackintosh community. That’s a joke, and he clearly didn’t do the required research before writing his piece.

As for the rest, Psystar’s antitrust claims *have* been thrown out, so a comparison to Microsoft is ridiculous and misleading, there’s simply no way the EFI hack renders any machine “virtually immune to hackers and viruses,” the Snow Leopard price is simply wrong, calling EULA law “dubious” is even more misleading as it’s been so well-tested, and anyone *can* make a hackintosh for free.

Psystar tells a good story, and it’s clear that Tim bought it without question. It’s just too bad so much of it is based on lies and mistruths.

I don’t know about you guys, but I am with Nilay and Engadget on this. They have far more experience and the actual facts on their side. Yes Engadget had a typo with Tim’s name, but that’s really a secondary and minor issue. But at least one of the issues in the original Engadget list could be easily fixed with a little more detail. Let’s do some comparisons.

“Robert cracked the code behind Apple Computer’s elegant operating system, OS X.”

That’s too vague for me. Let’s try again.

“Robert cracked the code behind Apple Computer’s elegant operating system, OS X that prevented the OS from running on non-Apple hardware.”

“Robert cracked the code behind Apple Computer’s elegant operating system, OS X. But some in the Hackintosh community claim they stole the code from open source projects.”

Depending on what you want to believe, either of those may work and I’m sure a ton of other people can re-write it better ways. As for the others on the list, I believe the New Times did fail to get the facts on this. Granted this isn’t a quick and easy subject but with time and some research, this would not have been a problem. Sadly, time is valuable for any newspaper. Time and money that seemingly no paper has to spare. I just hope this doesn’t burn the Miami New Times from writing about more tech articles. I really enjoyed the majority of the article and wish for them to write more stories about technology.

Update:

I originally wrote this story on Wednesday of last week and something new has happened in the Psystar vs. Apple case. On Saturday this update was posted:

Yet another bad day for Psystar. After both Apple and the shady hackintosh company filed for summary judgements, the rulings are out, and Psystar is looking pretty screwed.

All of Psystar’s motions for summary judgment were denied, while all of Apple’s were granted. That means that Apple got exactly what they wanted, while Psystar got exactly what they didn’t want.

Don’t worry, there will be a trial. The court still needs to determine (*deep breath*):

Apple’s allegations of breach of contract; induced breach of contract, trademark infringement; trademark dilution; trade dress infringement; and state unfair competition under California Business and Professions Code § 17200; and common law unfair competition.

Phew! So yeah, at this point it’s looking less like a trial to determine Psystar’s legitimacy, more like a trial to decide how much they owe Apple.

Now, I’m no lawyer, but from where I’m standing this case is looking pretty grim for Psystar. I’ll leave it to you legal eagles to explain exactly what all this means in the comments, because all I know is that it can’t be good. [Gizmodo via Groklaw via 9 to 5 Mac, image via walknboston]

So there you have it.

Modelli supportati:

P5K-SE, P5K, P5K PRO, P5K SE/EPU, P5K WS, P5K/EPU, P5KC & P5KR ,P5K Deluxe/WiFi-AP, P5K Premium/WiFi-AP, P5K3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP, P5K3 Premium/WiFi-AP, P5K-E & P5K-E/WIFI-AP

Occorrente:
- dmg snow leopard 10A432 Golden Master
- BOOT-132 per Snow Leopard – QUI -
- Kext+Utility zip: – QUI -

Avete finito, dovreste avere Snow funzionante a 64 bit nativamente!

Mau bikin distro kecil-kecilan.

Langkah Awal sebelum menginstal :

diskutil unmount diskXsY
cd /Volumes/Nama_FlashDisk_anda/Nama_Folder_EFI
./startupfiletool /dev/rdiskXsY ./boot_v8
dd if=./guid/boot1h of=/dev/rdiskXsY bs=512 count=1
dd if=./guid/boot0 of=/dev/diskX bs=400 count=1
diskutil mount diskXsY
cp –R SSE3/mach_kernel /Volumes/nama_disk/

Keterangan
- buka DiskUtility

berikut muncul informasi partisi os

b. Command instalasinya :
./startupfiletool /dev/rdiskXsY ./boot_v8
dd if=./guid/boot1h of=/dev/rdiskXsY bs=512 count=1
dd if=./guid/boot0 of=/dev/diskX bs=400 count=1
c. diskutil mount diskXsY : mount kembali partisi OS Leopard anda

diskutil unmount disk1s2
cd /Volumes/Nama_FlashDisk_anda/Nama_Folder_EFI
./startupfiletool /dev/rdisk1s2 ./boot_v8
dd if=./guid/boot1h of=/dev/rdisk1s2 bs=512 count=1
dd if=./guid/boot0 of=/dev/disk1 bs=400 count=1
diskutil mount disk1s2
cp –R SSE3/mach_kernel /Volumes/Leopard/

Cek penomoran partisi anda guna menginstal EFI

Semoga bermanfaat.

Introduction: This worked for me, but I was upgrading a 10.5.7 Leopard installation. I would think t

Introduction:

This worked for me, but I was upgrading a 10.5.7 Leopard installation. I would think this would work the same for a clean install, but you’ll be the first to know. This guide assumes that you know what a KEXT file is and which ones you need for your hardware. If you break your computer, its not my fault so don’t blame me. Now that I got that out of the way, heres how I got Snow Leopard working.

Things You’ll Need:

-Blank DVD

-Internet (I would hope you have an internet connection if you’re reading this…)

-A copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the $30 upgrade disc should work even for a clean install

-An Intel Core2 Duo/Quad

-A computer

-An Asus P5KPL-AM SE Motherboard (this guide may work for others though).

-An Insanelymac.com account would help if you need to get KEXTs for your hardware.

Steps:

1. Download Psystar’s Rebel EFI free trial, and burn it to a disc

http://store.psystar.com/featured/rebel-efi-preview.html?SID=ceefd8ieht1gu7nshgl15kn0l4

2. Boot from the Rebel EFI DVD, select “Install Mac OS X” and when it ejects the dvd, take it out and insert the Snow Leopard DVD

3. Install Snow Leopard. You may need to reformat your hard drive if it isn’t using the “GUID” partition table. To do this, go to the Utilities menu, and open Disk Utility. Click the hard drive you want to install to, and click partition.

Click the partitions menu.

Select the number of partitions you want, then click the Options button. Select the “GUID Partition Table.”

Click OK, then click apply.

4. Enjoy waiting forever for OS X to install, it takes about 40 minutes if I remember correctly.

5. It will probably say the install failed when theres like 1 minute left, thats OK, just click restart.

6. Once the computer restarts, eject the Snow Leopard DVD and put Rebel EFI back in.

7. This time, select the hard drive you installed OS X to and press enter.

8. The first boot will take a little while, just be patient and when it finally starts up, go through the setup process (you don’t have to put in your address and phone number and all that, I skipped it).

9. LAN should work out of the box with the Rebel EFI disc, so download any KEXTs you need and download the myHack bootloader from here: http://osx86.sojugarden.com/downloads/.

10. Install the KEXTs you need for your hardware with “Kext Helper b7,” and restart the computer. For LAN, install the r1000.kext. (The bootloader should have all the KEXTs needed to at least get it running without Rebel EFI. I’m not sure which KEXTs are needed for the sound, I just took all the ones I used in my Leopard installation.)

11. (If you use the onboard LAN and sound) When you get to the bootloader, press space. and then type “-x32″ without quotes and press enter. This makes Snow Leopard boot in 32-bit mode, this is the only way I could get the onboard LAN and sound to work.

12. Now, we’ll get the video card working properly.

Download “EFI Studio,” and run it.

Select your video card from the list. If its not there, you’ll have to figure it out yourself. (If you have an nVidia GeForce 9800GTX+ 512MB like me, you’ll have to select the GeForce 8600GTS 512MB. I don’t think it will affect performance, it just won’t see it as a 9800.)

Click “Add Device,” and copy the code from the bottom half of the following window:

Go to /Extra, and open com.apple.Boot.plist in TextEdit. type this at the end of all the crap in there:

<key>device_properties</key>

<string>[Insert code from EFI Studio here]</string>

To get the bootloader at the resolution you want, type this under what you just added:

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>[Your resolution here]x32</string>

13. Reboot the computer, and everything should be working. (If the computer doesn’t restart itself, download “openhaltrestart.kext” from somewhere and install that the same way you installed the KEXTs earlier.

Now that was a real pain in the ass wasn’t it? Much cheaper than a real Mac though, and it should work almost as good. Snow Leopard has been really stable and fast for me for the past week that I’ve had it. If you need any more help, feel free to comment and I’ll do my best to help you.

As if bankruptcy shenanigans and an unresolved exchange of lawsuits with Apple weren’t enough, Mac clone maker Psystar is really swatting the beehive now with the release of Rebel EFI, a $50 software package that promises a straightforward installation of Mac OS X on a variety of commodity x86 systems.

Setting up one’s own “Hackintosh” system has traditionally been a painstaking process of duplicating the OS install disc and fiddling around with various kernel extensions. Rebel EFI claims to do away with all this, bringing click-and-drool simplicity to the Hackintosh experience. The package can be downloaded free of charge in order to test compatibility with one’s hardware before committing to buy; in this trial mode, the system is limited to two hours run time. Minimum requirements include an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Core i7, or Xeon Nehalem CPU.

Normally we’re all for voiding warranties, challenging EULAs, and sticking it to The Man, but some have been calling Psystar’s underdog image a charade, claiming the commercial Rebel EFI software is simply an uncredited derivative of open source efforts such as the Chameleon bootloader. Whether or not this proves true, it will be interesting to see how this whole surreal skit plays out between Apple, Psystar and the open source Hackintosh community.

After four months of lugging a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse along with the MacBook Pro — which

After four months of lugging a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse along with the MacBook Pro — which, at 5.5lb, isn’t exactly light to begin with — I decided enough was enough. Since I’ve been wanting to ease some load off of my shoulder, and I couldn’t quite bring myself to buy the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, the time was right for me to consider a smaller and lighter alternative.

To be more specific, it was time to consider a “MacBook Nano.”

Opening Pandora’s Box

Four years ago, Apple (s aapl) announced a transition from powering its Macs with PowerPC processors to Intel (s intc) processors instead. The biggest ramification of such an architecture change was an obvious one: Mac OS X, previously written for the PowerPC platform, could then theoretically run on any Intel x86-based computer.

In the years after, enthusiasts have made much effort in making OS X run on generic PCs by hacking the various drivers — kernel extension, or kext files — so that the operating system can recognize hardware components beyond those used in Apple’s Macs. This has been achieved to varying degrees of success; due to the extremely wide range of configurations PCs ship in, some brands and models sporting certain hardware components run OS X better than others.

Do Your Homework First

To ensure you get the smoothest ‘Hackintosh’ experience possible, you have to first know which netbooks are the best ‘hackable’ candidates before you make a purchase. Currently, the netbooks most compatible for running OS X — when every component, from Wi-Fi to built-in audio, will be recognized by an OS X installation — are the following four:

Dell Mini 9 (everything works)

Vostro A90 (the OEM version of the Dell Mini 9)

HP Mini 1000 (everything works)

ASUS EeePC 1000H (everything works)

Close behind those four are the following models, of which OS X does not have the necessary kext for one particular component in each model. However, each of them can still be considered a suitable candidate for running OS X, depending on what you consider to be non-critical:

ASUS EeePC 901 (everything except sleep)

MSI Wind U100 (everything except audio input, though there’s been recent development in this area which may have solved this)

Lenovo IdeaPad S10 (everything except Ethernet)

You may have noticed that these are all older models. That’s the bad news. These models have already been superseded by newer models, and are therefore increasingly harder to find. But the good news is that most retailers are likely to have slashed prices in their bid to clear out existing stock precisely because they are older models.

Picking the Candidate

Last week, I marched into a local computer mall and found both a Lenovo IdeaPad S10 and a HP Mini 1000 sitting side-by-side in one store, going for $385 and $415, respectively. Talk about luck! Design-wise, I had eyes only for the IdeaPad S10 and the Mini 1000.

Its lower price aside, I picked the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 in the end, even though I knew the Ethernet port would not work (I don’t recall having used an Ethernet port in the past year). Not only was it cheaper, the IdeaPad S10 was better-spec’ed than the Mini 1000 in almost every aspect:

Memory: 2GB versus 1GB

Storage: 160GB versus 60GB

Battery: 6-cell (5.5 hours, 56 watt-hour) versus 3-cell (3 hours, 24.4 watt-hour)

Memory card reader: 4-in-1 (MMC/SD/Memory Stick/Memory Stick PRO) versus SD only

The clincher, for me, is that the IdeaPad S10 has an ExpressCard/34 slot, with which I can use my 3G ExpressCard modem, and also a trackpad of which its buttons are positioned beneath it rather than to the left and right as it is on that of the Mini 1000.

(Note to Apple: If Lenovo can squeeze a 4-in-1 memory card reader and an ExpressCard/34 slot into a tiny sub-notebook, you can certainly do the same for the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros. Just admit already you simply don’t want to.)

I should note that the one very good thing going for the HP Mini 1000 is that it has a 92 percent keyboard (versus the 85 percent keyboard of the IdeaPad S10), an impressive feat of engineering considering the fact that the Mini 1000 is of about the same width as the Lenovo IdeaPad S10.

Installation is an Outpatient Day Op

Installation is a breeze. Enough effort by enthusiasts have been made that installing OS X on a PC is a quick weekend exercise.

While I will not detail how to ‘Hackintosh’ a netbook, there are essentially two ways to do so: by obtaining an installation disk image already hacked with the appropriate drivers (the easiest way to go), or by installing from the retail DVD and subsequently hacking the drivers (messier and not for the novice).

Since most netbooks do not have optical drives, I had to use an external DVD drive. After making sure the BIOS of the netbook has been set to boot first from an optical drive, I popped the OS X 10.5.4 Install DVD in, booted the S10 up and off went the installation.

Upon first boot, I had to replace a kext file for the Wi-Fi in the IdeaPad S10 to work. Once that was up and running, all that was left to do was to replace a couple more kext files for functions such as system sleep, two-finger scrolling, internal audio input, ExpressCard, and display hot keys to work.

Once I was sure I had all the components working, I did a Software Update to 10.5.8. Doing so killed the Wi-Fi, keyboard and trackpad, but a repeat of replacing kext files restored them to a working state.

Overall Impressions

How does it fare? The ‘Hackintosh’ is more than capable of handling basic functionality well on a daily basis. Overall speed and performance of OS X on the IdeaPad S10, which is powered by the Intel Atom N270 1.66Ghz processor, is akin to that of an iBook PowerPC G4.

There is Always a “But”

The one glaring caveat to running OS X on a netbook is the lack of screen real estate. Most netbooks are equipped with either a 9- or 10-inch screen typically running a resolution of 1024 by 600. But the overall UI design of OS X is seemingly based on a minimum screen resolution of 1280 by 800, which is what the lowest-spec’ed Macs run at. This poses some usability issues when it comes to the window size of certain applications.

System Preferences, for example, opens a window longer than the screen resolution of the IdeaPad S10 can display.

As you can see in the screenshot above, anything beyond the first row of Preference Panes in the ‘Others’ section are obscured. The workaround to this is to click on any Preference Pane, and then click the ‘Reveal All’ buttons to go back. Doing that invokes a scroll bar within System Preferences, which you can then drag to reach the previously-obscured Panes.

The other two issues I have with the IdeaPad S10 are the right-handside Shift key and the tiny trackpad.

But these are all small annoyances, really, not show-stoppers. While a 1024 by 600 screen resolution means I’d mostly be running one application fullscreen at a time, once I think of this limitation as a way to force me to focus on one task at a time, it’s not so bad. Plus, there’s always Megazoomer; fullscreen is just a Command+Enter keystroke away. And LazyMouse helps mitigate the problem of the tiny trackpad.

The Mac Netbook as the Middle Ground

I had, from the get-go, meant to use this ‘MacBook Nano’ of mine for only web browsing, email, simple image manipulation and writing.

Prior to getting the IdeaPad S10, there were days when I’d go out with only my iPhone 3G, knowing I can do all of the above with it. But there are times when I need to download, review, annotate and then resend certain types of documents neither iPhone OS nor a third-party iPhone app recognizes. Without a notebook with which to do that, I am pretty much stuck.

So, until Apple reinvents the sub-notebook with its fabled tablet, this ‘Hackintosh’ fills the gap between the times when I don’t need to lug around a workhorse like my MacBook Pro and when I need to do more than what my iPhone 3G lets me do.

“Mac or No Mac, There is No Try”

I’m sure I speak for many die-hard Mac users by saying that, being someone who cannot fathom using anything other than Mac OS X, and faced with a pressing need to have a lightweight portable, I’d rather use OS X on a netbook with all of the compromises it entails than to have to use Windows on the same netbook. To me, the Mac experience has always been more about software than hardware.

Small, Light, and It Runs OS X. What’s Not To Like?

Having used the S10 every day for a week now, taking it instead of my 15-inch MacBook Pro everywhere, I can say with certainly that my MacBook Pro will be relegated to my desk on most days, and that my preferred portable computer from hereon will be this ‘MacBook Nano’ of mine.

I can fish it out in places where opening a 15-inch notebook would be a clumsy thing to do; my tired shoulder has never felt better; I have desktop-class computing power everywhere I go, and can do far more than what I can with the iPhone. It is inexpensive, small, light, and it runs OS X.

What’s not to like, really?
