S-o zic, s-o mai ţin pentru mine? Se va ofusca toată protipendada! Că doar OTA găzduieşte în al său maison cel mai iubit bar trashy din iubitul vostru Bucureşti. Despre bar nu comentez, că nu frecventez cluburi, baruri cafenele. Nu sunt urban, nu sunt om de vernisaje şi atmosfera de bodegă improvizată în pivniţă îmi subrezeşte nervii şi aşa sensibilizaţi. A comentat Pam Pas AICI barul mult mai bine decât m-aş descurca eu! O să ma ocup de ale mele, prestigioasa galerie 26, găzduită de aceeaşi încăpere. Am văzut un număr rezonabil de expoziţii mai mult decât toxice găzduite aici ca să înţeleg exact nimicul spre care se îndreaptă. Tot ce înseamnă rebut artistic e aruncat în mansarda lui Ota. Nu luăm în discuţie lipsa conceptului, deruntantele simeze sau textele aberante ci simpla existentă a improvizaţiei prea cool din Cotroceni. Sunt şocat de când i-am trecut pragul de primivismul voit şi aerul noşalant de asumată ignoraţă a esteticului şi artei care guvernează orice este născut de brand-ul cultural OTA. Nu contest potenţialul valoric al oricărei initiative de tip underground, nici obligativitatea dozei de subiectivism în selecţia artiştilor. Contest doar falsitatea şi stupizenia demersului de-a integra în aria cool-junck-trash a tuturor artiştilor lipsiţi de orice potenţial creator. Nu reuşesc să-mi dau seama de ce tot artiştii care trec pragul OTA n-au nimic de spus. Sunt seci, storşi şi netalentaţi. Îmi amintesc politica Salonului refuzaţilor. Dar contextul era diferit! Acum refuzaţii nu sunt neînţeleşii. Sunt netalentaţii! Oricine poate avea o şansă în Bucureşti. Sunt alţii care descoperă talente în ghene (Nu e o glumă proastă şi nici un clişeu de telenovelă. Interesaţi-vă de Ion Bârlădeanu). Deci lipsa creatorilor în acest spaţiu e total nejustificată! Şi aud oameni lăudându-l pe Ota pentru fantastice realizări. Poate o fi simpatic omu’ dar asta nu justifică alegerile proaste pe care le face!

Monologând despre OTA ar fi trebuit să includ o părere despre Magazinul Naţional de Artă Contemporană. Văd pe blog-ul acestui hibrid ce se vinde acolo, dar vor reveni cu impresii după o vizită la faţa locului. Presimt că voi intra în fibrilaţii şi va urma un mesaj nervos despre acest proiect…

A kit-bash is a process where parts from one kit are combined with or substituted for parts on another kit to create a “hybrid” figure. the kit-bash is popular in the Gundam community.

Representatives of nearly twenty toll agencies met in Dallas TX February 7 and decided to form an Alliance for Toll Interoperability (ATI). Initial focus of the group, mostly southern tollers, will be how to go about establishing license plate read reciprocity. With the strong move towards cashless tolling camera reads of license plates – ‘video tolling’ – becomes the mode for collecting the tolls of those motorists without a transponder account.

. . . Attending the formative Dallas meeting were senior operations people from toll authorities in the Carolinas, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas. 15 to 20 toll operators were informally represented.

Video data exchange format priority

The Dallas meeting reached agreement that their most urgent need is a common format for exchange of video toll data. They hope to reach agreement on a common format for exchange of video by the end of the year.

It may be one or two images of specified size in specified format. Or it may be the license plate characters as extracted, or some combination of images and licence plate characters, in different circumstances, Eden indicated. It is all up for discussion.

One group will look at the technical aspects, another the legal issues. State law may restrict or specify how data can be exchanged.

ATI people are also interested in how they can improve the readabillity of license plates. Eden says some of the members have been talking with 3M, the big Minneapolis based company that supplies much of the surfacing film used on license plates.

In most states when the transponder readers don’t recognize a local transponder, or any transponder, a camera is triggered that takes pictures of the rear and sometimes also the front of the vehicle. Each state or tolling area (E-ZPass IAG, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, South Carolina, Kansas etc) will generate a toll bill or violation notice based on their ability to access ‘foreign’ state motor registry databases.

The pilot program to exchange camera based data between toll areas is being conducted under the auspices of the Alliance for Toll Interoperability (ATI) and the I-95 Coalition.

Several toll areas began exchanging camera captured license plate data last week. No tolls are being actually processed in the pilot program, just the camera files are being exchanged to test the feasibility of tolling one another’s customers.

. . . JJ Eden chairman of ATI told us the pilot program is an effort to learn what needs to be done to handle one another’s camera data. Business rules vary from one area to another, so part of the challenge of interoperability is how to deal with different business rules, or harmonizing them.

Each participating toll authority will need to consult their own lawyers to see if there are problems sending license plate data to other states, Eden says. ATI already has a detailed model for exchange of camera files. Now that is being tested with real camera files.

Many of you have been waiting on the Droid update that Verizon/Motorola released in small numbers to it’s subscribers. It has many bug fixes and should slowly get to all ~1 million users by years end.

Disclaimer: Those are predicted handsets sold by years end since it’s release in early November.

If you haven’t gotten the update and don’t mind taking a few steps to do this yourself, by all means do it.

It’s VERY simple. I will outline the steps here for you.

1. Download update.zip from MegaUpload
2. Turn on Mass Storage on your phone
3. Transfer and place update.zip in your microSD card root folder (Main Directory)
4. Turn off handset
5. Turn on handset and hold X key on your keyboard
6. You will now see an exclamation mark (!) with a triangle around it
7. Hit volume up key and lightly press camera button
8. Scroll down to apply update and hit ok on your keyboard
9. You will see the progress bar move until update is applied
10. Your phone will now restart and you will have applied the ESD56 maintainence update.
11. To verify go to Setting—>About Phone—>Firmware Version 2.0.1 and Build Number ESD56

Disclaimer: If you don’t understand these simple steps, you should NOT be messing with your phone. They are self explanitory and I will not be held responsible for your bricked phone.

P.S. This was just a minor maintainence release to address some bugs. There should be “MAJOR” update

January 17th 2010. If I were a guessing man I’d say it was the 2.1 OS, but take that with a grain of salt

As we all start buying more devices that wirelessly connect to the internet, there’s a growing concern that there won’t be enough spectrum to accommodate all of that data usage. Unlike fiber, you can’t just make more spectrum, so one of the options that remains is freeing up spectrum from other sources. Sources like over the air (OTA) broadcasts.

As part of its development of the National Broadband Plan, the FCC has started poking around TV broadcasters to find out how much spectrum they are using, and if any of it can be freed up for other commercial purposes. The Commission released a public notice (document) today asking questions such as:

1. What factors should the Commission consider when examining and comparing the benefits of spectrum used for over-the-air television broadcasting and those of spectrum used for wireless broadband services?

2. What would be the impact to the U.S. economy if insufficient additional spectrum were made available for wireless broadband deployment, in terms of investments, jobs, consumer welfare, innovation, and other indicators of global leadership?

3. What would be the impact to the U.S. economy and public welfare if the coverage of free over-the-air broadcast television was diminished to accommodate a repacking of stations to recover spectrum?

4. How do television broadcasters use the capabilities of digital television today? Please provide information on data rate allocations to HD, SD, multicast streams, bandwidth leasing arrangements, etc. and the business rationale behind these choices.

TV broadcasters currently have 6 Mhz of spectrum per station and experts say that they only use 1 – 2 Mhz to deliver HD channels today depending on the type of transmission standard use, they could use as little as 1 MHz per standard definition channel broadcasting using MPEG 4and as much as 5 MHz for an HD broadcasting using MPEG-2. That number could go up with the advent of 3-D TVs or some other kind of as-yet-invented video technology rolls out.

Right now the FCC is just in inquiry mode as it collects data. And it’s easy for the tech savvy to dismiss the importance of OTA TV given how we’re shifting to MSO-delivered and over-the-top TV, but there are still lots of people who rely on free, over-the-air transmissions. The Commission’s challenge will be in balancing the need for more wireless bandwidth (damn you, iPhone!) with the public interest in having free broadcast television.
