I’m sure there must be lots more lovely Christmas stuff, but I can’t seem to find very much of it. Nuts to New Year. This is the West Midlands, not Scotland.

Standard disclaimers: I can’t ensure that these events will go ahead, that they’ll be good, or that I will be going to them. This is just a list of things I found that looked like they might be interesting, so please do not contact me to ask for your event to be included. That’s not the way it works.

Until Saturday the 6th of Feb – “George’s Marvellous Medicine” (Birmingham Stage Company) @ The Old Rep, Birmingham – Mixing up everything in your medicine cabinet is not recommended at home, kids. Unless you’re genuinely thirsty.

Until Saturday the 9th of January – “A Christmas Carol” (Birmingham Rep Theatre Company) @ The Rep Theatre, Birmingham – Seems fair to me to say that “Marley was dead: to begin with” is the second greatest opening line in all of literature.

Between Tuesday the 1st and Saturday the 19th – A whole tonne of Capsule stuff to celebrate ten years of ‘em @ various venues in Brum – There’s loads of stuff. I’ll list the lot (and just link to their event pages) for the sake of completeness, so this doesn’t mean I’m seriously recommending SunnO)))~!111: Monotonix, Esquilax, Beestung Lips and Cum Dogs at Vivid in Digbeth on the 1st; Tunng, Six Organs Of Admittance, Lightning Dust And Bella Emerson at the Town Hall on the 2nd (this is the one I’m most looking forward to); Lightning Bolt, Tweak Bird and Pete Prescription at Vivid on the 8th; Sunno)))}}}]]] and Om at The Asylum in Hockley on the tenth; Pram and Light Trap at Vivid on the 11th; a free afternoon film showing at Vivid on the 13th with a buffet and pictures provided by 7 Inch Cinema; Beak, Einstellung and Thought Forms at Vivid on the 16th; some sort of evening social or suchlike at Vivid on the 17th; and a final partay with Modified Toy Orchestra, PCM, Calvados Beam Trio, Una Corda and Stinky Wizzleteat at Vivid on the 19th. You owe me a pint if I’ve managed to put all of those links in without cocking up the code at all.

Tuesday the 1st – Alice Cooper @ The Civic Hall, Wolverhampton – Giving a golf seminar, perhaps.

Thursday the 3rd till Saturday the 5th – “The Just Price Of Flowers” (Stan’s Café) @ A.E. Harris, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham – Inspired by Brecht, but not actually one of his (apparently there has been some confusion). Parallels are drawn between modern-day financial nuttery and 17th century Dutch tulip nuttery.

Friday the 4th – Chris Addison @ The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton – Ollie Ollie Ollie, Oi Oi Oi.

Various dates between Saturday the 5th and Saturday the 19th – Verdi’s “Othello” (Birmingham Opera Company) @ The Argyle Works, Bordesley, Birmingham – Birmingham Opera Company’s version of “Idomeneo” last year was greater than great can be. Judging by the postcode, the venue for this should be somewhere in the general vicinity of here.

Friday the 5th – Frank Sidebottom @ The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton – Fantastic showbusiness.

Saturday the 5th – Boxing (dunno who’s promoting) @ The Hilton Hotel, Coventry – Including Max “Max” Maxwell vs Martin Concepcion, in what must be Max’s 381,789th Midlands area title match (EDIT: or 4th, if you want to be boring and accurate).

Sunday the 6th – Madball @ Busk, Birmingham – Hardcore for tuphguyzzz. I will forever maintain that “Droppin’ Many Suckers” is one of the greatest names that anyone ever has called and ever could call an album.

Monday the 7th – The Unthanks @ The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton – North-Eastern folkifiers formerly known as “Rachel Unthank And The Winterset”. I’m glad they’ve changed their name. OtherUnthankSister didn’t outwardly appear to do any less than Rachel, so it’s fairer this way.

Tuesday the 8th – Jodi Ann Bickley @ The Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath, Birmingham – Interesting and endearing poetry, happening at the same time as the ’Freestyle’ photography exhibiton.

Wednesday the 9th – Alexander O’Neal @ The Civic Hall, Wolverhampton – Or rather “80s soul nuisance Alexander O’Neal”, as the in-joke that you won’t get has it.

Wednesday the 9th – Seth Lakeman @ The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton – Frequently fancied fiddler fascinates folks (with) folk.

Wednesday the 9th – The Bookhouse Boys @ The Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath, Birmingham – Like Tindersticks on holiday in Hawaii, or somesuch.

Wednesday the 9th – “Arc” (with Graft) @ The Vaults, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham – The first of a new monthly art night, with a different set of artists each time. Here ‘Graft’ (whoever they might be) will bring a Jewellery-with-other-meanings exhibition from “The Institute Of Meaningful Interaction” and artist Mark Baldwin appearing as part of the structure of the building. Apparently. All very vague as a result of the fact that no sod seems to have a web presence because… I don’t know why not. I love The Vaults, though, it’s a great place.

Thursday the 10th – Madness @ The Academy, Birmingham – Mavva Brahn’s got her knees up, presumably in the process of skanking. This one is (unsurprisingly) sold out, but they’re also at The Civic on the 17th.

Friday the 11th – “Resistance, Revolt, Rebellion: A Double Bill of Civil Disobedience” (Kindandgenerous Productions and Emma Purshouse) @ The Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton – In Love And Taxes, current Brum poet laureate Adrian Johnson and Jessi of Eastfield bring songs and stories recalling the popular opposition to the poll tax. In “Are You Sitting Comfortably?”, Emma Purshouse tell poems of “rebellion, revolution and armchair inactivism”.

Sunday the 13th – Basement Jaxx @ The Civic Hall, Wolverhampton – Let’s all have a disco, let’s all have a disco.

Sunday the 13th – Depeche Mode @ The LG Arena, Marston Green, Birmingham – A band who I’d say have been quite the unsung influence on quite a fair bit of music in recent years.

Tuesday the 15th – Public Image Limited @ The Academy, Birmingham – Given that my LOTTSADITWM often feature metal and boxing, it seems only too apt that a band who put out an album called “Metal Box” should be in here. Also: post-punk legends, Country Life butter etc.

Wednesday the 16th till Sunday the 20th – “The Snow Queen” (Screamingvoiceyouththeatre) @ The Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton – Screamingvoice etc.etc. are absolutely ace, they really are.

Wednesday the 16th – Nile @ The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton – Ancient Egyptian themed death metal, and I can’t see how you could possibly think that isn’t the best idea ever. Nothing I’ve ever heard by them is quite as good as the concept, but Krisiun are on the bill too and they’ll blow your earwax free (I mean that in a good way).

Wednesday the 16th – The Pogues @ The Academy, Birmingham – [Slur]Dirty old Towwwwwwwwwwn…[/slur]

Friday the 18th until Friday the 9th of January – Funworld @ The NEC, Marston Green, Birmingham – I don’t see how anyone could dislike a world of fun. It’s a huge indoor funfair (including, apparently, a “300ft bungee slingshot”. Indoors, I’ll repeat with vague concern) and has to win the all-time title for “event I’ve been handed the largest number of the same flyer for”.

Saturday the 21st – The Beat’s xmas party @ The Asylum, Hockley, Birmingham – 30 years since they started, apparently (see also the 27th).

Monday the 21st – The Wildhearts @ The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton – My unbroken run of not managing to see any Wildhearts or Wildhearts-related gigs since 2001 will definitely continue here. They’re still ace though.

Monday the 21st – Musical Youth @ The Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath, Birmingham – Don’t take the mick, you know which way you need to pass it.

Wednesday the 23rd until Sunday the 3rd of January – “The Gruffalo (Tall Stories) @ The Town Hall, Birmingham – They had The Gruffalo plodding along as part of the Reindeer Parade in town recently. I thought he was cute.

Friday the 25th – IT’S CHRIIISTMUUUUUUS!

Sunday the 27th – Drongos For Europe’s xmas party @ the Asylum, Hockley, Birmingham – 30 years since they started, apparently (see also the 21st).

A dirigere Anton Guadagno, direttore siciliano, scomparso nel 2002, attivo soprattutto all’estero.

Terzo numero: Rigoletto.

I have knitting finished!! Honestly. But it’s been one catastrophe after another.

I finished Otello, a Louisa Harding pattern, in Pear Tree yarn, only to wash it on a short, cold cycle, the same one I’ve always used for my jumpers. And it’s gone from slightly too big for me to perfect for the six year old grandchild of a friend. She loves it!! So, be warned, Pear Tree says hand wash and they mean it. Alas I hadn’t got around to a picture.

And I’ve finished a top down raglan in gorgeous cashmere. I love it. BUT I’ve lost my photographer. Careless of me, I know, but there you are. I need a new photographer. I guess I could try taking one of those photos in the mirror. Other girls make those look great, but I’m sure mine would be hopeless.

One way or another, pics soon, even if they are lousy.

Lijkt me een leuk radioprogramma opleveren: De Mooiste Noten Van…?

If men have lusty eyes on women, they can easily put the blame on their ancestors, as it is not only human beings who have lust, but also animals. But in this case, it is not a lust of one animal for another, but for a woman.

Valentina Kirilova was trying to give Otello, a chimp, a banana at Rostov Zoo in Russia, but instead of taking the food, Otello grabbed her hand.

After dragging her into the cage, the chimpanzee began to try to rape her. Valentina said of the attack: “I have spent a lot of time around the primates but I’d never imagined that a lonely chimpanzee could see me as a sex object.”

The ape broke the keeper’s wrist as he pulled her into his cage and began to attack her.

“When I tried to pass a banana to him, the chimpanzee grabbed my hand and pulled me into the cage and tried to rape me,” said Valentina.

She was saved when her screams brought other keepers running.

One keeper said: “It’s a serious matter. If that had been a member of the public we would all be in court by now.”

Originally published at Paper Palate on April 30, 2009.

In 1991 a Mississippi lawyer enthralled America with his groundbreaking novel, The Firm. Since then John Grisham has rattled off an impressive list of best selling legal thrillers like The Chamber and The King of Torts. From time to time the southern lawyer has ventured out of the courtroom and into the real world with hits like Bleachers which centers on high school football and Skipping Christmas which was made into the Tim Allen comedy Christmas with the Kranks.

In 2007 Grisham released Playing for Pizza which chronicles the fictional NFL quarterback Rick Dockery. Rick was a star Iowa high school player and an absolute gun slinger against the molasses-quick defenses of the Big 10. Pro football on the other hand was a different story. In his last NFL game he went from unknown third-stringer to the “unquestioned greatest Goat in the history of professional sports,” and all in just over 11 minutes.

To escape the ridicule of the national pundits and the ire of the fans of the Cleveland Browns, Dockery flees to Europe where he becomes the starting quarterback for the Parma Panthers of NFL Italy. Football Americano is neither popular nor very good. From there it is the typical “Rocky formula” with one exception, the food.

Each player on the team takes turns treating their new comrade to a meal any foodie would kill a drifter for and there are 40 sum odd players on the team. From his very first taste of Emilia-Romagna’s two most famous offerings, prosciutto and Parmigiano-Reggiano, Rick embarks on a culinary voyage that is equal to none.

Grisham accurately captures the essence of the Italian passion for food. The descriptions of each meal are accurate to the various regions they originate in and the wine pairings are perfect. Clearly the author did extensive research on the subject. That must have been grueling, especially getting tickets to see Verdi’s Otello at the Teatro Regio from the mayor of the city of Parma.

The prose is what you would expect from Grisham and as usual he manages to drive the action to a crescendo. But this book also serves as a fine example of a new trend of building gastronomy into the narrative, even in non-food literature. Football fans will enjoy the tale of Rick Dockery as will Grisham fans in general but it is the foodie who will get the most joy out of Playing for Pizza.

Maria Malibran as Desdemona. One of the things that has kept me very busy over the past few months

Maria Malibran as Desdemona.

One of the things that has kept me very busy over the past few months is freelance writing for various publications, one of them The Miami Herald.

For the Herald, I did a piece about Jose Carreras, the Catalan tenor most well-known as a member of The Three Tenors. I’m probably one of the only classical music journalists left in the world who hasn’t talked to him, but he was wonderfully gracious and quite easy to talk to, and I’m grateful to him for making things work so well.

In the course of our discussion, I asked him about obscure operas. He’s done quite a few of the early Verdi operas (Un Giorno di Regno, for instance), and ended his stage career singing, of all things, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s Sly. (Part of one of those performances can be seen on YouTube.)

I wanted to ask him about this because in the course of my research for the piece I did some looking into his discography and came away very impressed by the sheer volume of work he’s done, and in particular, the offbeat work such as the Verdi rarities. So I asked him which opera of all the unusual ones he’s done should appear more regularly on the world’s opera stages.

His answer: Rossini’s Otello. Here’s the section of the story (this part didn’t run) in which we discussed it:

“I always liked to do, besides the basic repertoire, what you call rarities,” he said. “Besides [Un] Giorno di Regno, many other early Verdi operas … Il Corsaro, [La] Battaglia de Legnano, [I] Due Foscari, Stiffelio; or Rossini’s Otello, Rossini’s Elisabetta d’Inghilterra. I always like to escape routine. I think this is also very important for an artist.”

It’s also good for the general public to know the music better, Carreras said, and that means all of the Verdi operas, “from A to Zed.” But the opera that sticks out for him as a real treasure is the Rossini Otello, which he recorded with the American mezzo Frederica von Stade in the early 1980s.

“I know that one of the problems is to find the right cast, because, can you imagine, we’re talking about an opera with six tenors. Which opera director wants to face that?” he said, laughing. “But I think it’s a great opera.”

So I’ve been wandering around the Net looking for performances of it, and there are plenty on YouTube alone, including one of von Stade singing the Willow Song (Assisa al pie d’un salice) from Act III. I was not familiar with this 1816 opera (except through the Liszt transcription of one of the arias), and while it has an early 19th-century beauty that is not quite as compelling to me as the Verdi treatment 70 years later, it’s still wonderful music, and I can see why it was so popular for most of that century before Verdi’s displaced it.

Oddly enough, tonight as I was reading a Mendelssohn biography (R. Larry Todd’s), I came to the section in which Mendelssohn first visited England in 1829. The first concert he went to? The opera, where he saw Otello, with Maria Malibran.

Philip Gossett once wrote that Rossini deserves the credit for establishing the norms of operatic drama as we still know it in large part today, and I for one would love to hear something other than Il Barbiere or Cenerentola if I’m going to hear Rossini. I remember once many years ago getting my hands on a complete recording of William Tell, and found it astounding, and when it comes to length and expense, we’ll do that for Wagner, apparently, but not Rossini.

It’s too bad, and I’ve got more to say about operatic repertory, but will post a followup later. In the meantime, I’m glad to have had the opportunity to talk to Jose Carreras and get inspired to look a little harder at the lesser-known parts of the operatic canon.

Here’s a performance from Spain, in Carreras’ hometown of Barcelona, in which the Italian mezzo Cecilia Bartoli, as part of her Malibran tribute, sings the Willow Song. I like the way she does this, and I love the period instruments the orchestra uses (this is Part 1, but the uploader has a link to Part 2 in the notes):

I’m not much of an opera fan, but because friend Rachel was singing in the chorus I managed to take in the final performance of this year’s Lowell House production: Otello.

The Verdi opera itself doesn’t have much of a story (Rachel says it cuts back on the complexity of the Shakespearean drama to the point where it’s just the villain Iago planting the lovely Desdemona’s handkerchief in the home of his rival Cassio’s home in order to provoke her husband’s Otello’s jealousy-so I found myself thinking that, if it weren’t for the music, there wouldn’t be much there.

But the music was spectacular. Even before the opera started, the tuning up phase brought palpable energy and anticipation to the audience. And throughout, the orchestra, a mix of student and professional musicians conducted by Channing Yu (who, in his other life, an attending physician at a Boston teaching hospital) played dramatical clashes and soothing lows that provided a vibrant backdrop for wonderful singing by both professional musicians and students.

I was particularly entranced by Andrew Young, who played the villain Iago so well that he was booed, during his graceful bow, at the end). I felt that his powerful performance upstaged Brian Landry’s Otello, who, along with Malynda Davis, gave excellent performances–as did a slightly weaker Andre De Mesquita, playing Cassio. The principals, who also included Ana Ugarte as Emilia, John Erban, as Lodvico, an James Liu, as Montano, and DJ Robinson, as Roderego, were backed up by an enthusiastic (if slightly hard-to hear) chorus–including the soprano Rachel who appeared to be dressed as a boy.

I never thought I was in Venice or at the Met, but the vibrancy and professionalism of the production and the performers far surpassed what I’d expected to hear–especially in a college dining hall.

I was happy to join a well-deserved standing ovation offered by the sold-out crowd.
