I’m sure you’ve heard of it in some capacity (hopefully!), what with the recent debate over the ages of certain gymnasts at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, all of the lead paint scandals and off shoring outrage, and the age-old myth that digging a hole deep enough will put you out on the other side of the world in China. For the most part, these are all true…to a certain extent, anyway (all except for the last one–if you actually took a pencil and stuck it through the US on a globe, the other end would actually come out somewhere in the Indian Ocean next to Australia–I checked), but I think we should reinforce your knowledge with a few solid facts:

Population: 1.3 billion

Total land area: 9,596,960 sq km (around that of the US)

Country shape: Chicken

Major ethnic group: Han 91.5%

Languages: Mandarin and Cantonese, also other various dialects

Total number of Chinese characters: 47,000+

Chief of State: Hu Jintao

Current currency exchange rate: ¥6.83 = $1

Daily text messages sent: 1.6 bill+

Length of history: 5,000+ years

Time difference: 14-15 hours from Mountain Time (China only has one time zone, and the variation is due to daylight savings)

“Four Great Inventions”: Paper, Gunpowder, Printing, Compass

Most notable geographic features: Yellow River, Yangtze River (3rd longest river in the world), Tibetan Plateau, Himalayan Mountain Range, Mongolian Plains

And these are your rudimentary facts about China, without delving into history, culture, or controversy! Now you are exponentially smarter and more likely to succeed in the world. =3

I’m not really popular at school though but I can be outgoing and fun in my other side of my world. To the real person I am, it’s opposite of what I’ve said. Anyway I started myself as a very reserved and ingoing person. I don’t appear to be “natural conversationalist” although people loves me the way I create my own favourite style and to behave the way I wanted to be. I’m entirely a perfectionalist, as well.

We’re big map geeks. We love anything that saves us time, makes us more productive, or is a Google Maps mash-up. We’ve discovered some especially useful ones recently and wanted to share them with you!

The first allows you to browse a Google map, click anywhere, and receive an instant postal address for that location. We’ve found it to be surprisingly accurate. Check it out HERE.

Instant Postal Addresses by Clicking on the Map... Nifty

The next one populates movie theaters on a map. When you click on a theater, the movie times pop up. Sweet!

It's showtime!

This next one is a lot of fun. If you were ever a kid, we’re sure you used to wonder what would happen if you dug a hole all the way to the other side of the world. I still have unfinished holes at certain beaches. Well THIS new Google Maps mash-up will tell you just that. Plug in a city or an exact address and it spits back the exact location of the “other side of the planet.” Groovy.

Ah Ha! The other side of the world is NOT in China. Sorry Mom.

Ever wanted to meet up halfway with someone, say for coffee or a slice of pizza? Now you can save yourself the hassle of figuring out both a midpoint AND a meeting spot by using MeetWays.com.

Why don't you meet me halfway?

A GPS system in your car makes this next one obsolete, but for those of us without one, try FindItOnMyWay.com. You tell it where you’re coming from, where you’re headed, and what you need on the way. FindItOnMyWay figures out your best options.

Hmmm, maybe there's a Krispy Kreme on the way.

Gentrify allows you to browse a map and check off boxes for everything from bars to Buddhist Temples. Browse your area and see what you may be missing.

So you remember how when Bugs Bunny dug a deep hole he always came out in China? If he was digging straight down, he’d have to come out in the southern hemisphere, no? Ever think about that?

Me neither. I was just trying to eat up my Cap’n Crunch before it got soggy.

But here’s the thing: If you figure up the exact opposite side of the world from Black Mountain, NC, where I call home, it happens to come out in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Perth, Australia (the other side of the country from Brisbane).

Right here:

So if you’re in North America and you want to point at me, it’s not really a question of which direction to point on the horizon. Just point more or less straight down.
