So...what exactly IS China?

I’m sure you’ve heard of it in some capacity (hopefully!), what with the recent debate over the ages of certain gymnasts at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, all of the lead paint scandals and off shoring outrage, and the age-old myth that digging a hole deep enough will put you out on the other side of the world in China. For the most part, these are all true…to a certain extent, anyway (all except for the last one–if you actually took a pencil and stuck it through the US on a globe, the other end would actually come out somewhere in the Indian Ocean next to Australia–I checked), but I think we should reinforce your knowledge with a few solid facts:

Population: 1.3 billion
Total land area: 9,596,960 sq km (around that of the US)
Country shape: Chicken
Major ethnic group: Han 91.5%
Languages: Mandarin and Cantonese, also other various dialects
Total number of Chinese characters: 47,000+

And these are your rudimentary facts about China, without delving into history, culture, or controversy! Now you are exponentially smarter and more likely to succeed in the world. =3

I’m emotionally challenge. My personality is extremely girlish. I love sticking with my close friends all the time. I’m not really popular at school though but I can be outgoing and fun in my other side of my world. To the real person I am, it’s opposite of what I’ve said. Anyway I started myself as a very reserved and ingoing person. I don’t appear to be “natural conversationalist” although people loves me the way I create my own favourite style and to behave the way I wanted to be. I’m entirely a perfectionalist, as well.

We’re big map geeks. We love anything that saves us time, makes us more productive, or is a Google Maps mash-up. We’ve discovered some especially useful ones recently and wanted to share them with you!

Mmmm have been listening to KT again (well all the old stuff really) seeing as I’m going to see her next Saturday! I don’t think I ever fully appreciated this song before. ETTT owns DF. Other Side of the World

So you remember how when Bugs Bunny dug a deep hole he always came out in China? If he was digging straight down, he’d have to come out in the southern hemisphere, no? Ever think about that?

Me neither. I was just trying to eat up my Cap’n Crunch before it got soggy.

But here’s the thing: If you figure up the exact opposite side of the world from Black Mountain, NC, where I call home, it happens to come out in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Perth, Australia (the other side of the country from Brisbane).

So if you’re in North America and you want to point at me, it’s not really a question of which direction to point on the horizon. Just point more or less straight down.
