Yesterday the second leg of the World Cup qualifiers were held (in Europe, at least). We now know each and every team which will be present at the World Cup next year… and there are a few surprises, but mostly it’s the teams you’d expect to see, given FIFA’s newly instated practice of seeding the qualification playoffs. The seeding did what it was supposed to do, for the most part – that is, benefit larger nations with bigger and more prominent stars. I’m more than a little bitter, but nevertheless, let’s get on with a rundown of what happened. Oh, and sorry it’s a bit belated.

Portugal 1-0 Bosnia-Herzegovina (2-0 Agg.) – Well, Bosnia & Herzegovina’s World Cup dreams have been shattered. Many of the Balkan states have faltered this year, with only Serbia getting through in initial qualification. I’m sure Edin Dzeko & Co. would have liked to seize their chance for revenge on home soil, but it was simply not to be. The Portugese cruised to South Africa with an easy win despite their host’s best efforts and the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo. All it took was a lazy tap in from Raúl Meireless on 56′ to give Portugal a lead which the Bosnians would find insurmountable. Bosnia’s usually-fierce attack was largely subdued, with the only clear-cut chance falling to star man Edin Dzeko ten minutes from full time; he promptly duffed it. And so, while Portugal clearly deserved the win last night, I will proclaim Bosnia-Herzegovina some of the first victims of FIFA seeding.

Slovenia 1-0 Russia (2-2 Agg.) – Slovenia edged past Guus Hiddink’s Russia on away-goal advantage to book their place in South Africa and send the Russkies home to cry in their vodka. Russian fans came into this match with a lot of trepidation; Slovenia is best remembered in Russia as the team who in 2002 were inexplicably awarded a penalty by referee Graham Poll in extra time to defeat Russia and knock them out of World Cup qualification. So, despite the fact that Graham Poll was definitely not officiating last night’s match, one can understand a little Russian nervousness. And maybe Slovenia sensed it, because they put in a stolid performance, muscling the visitors off possession and doing a good job disrupting Russian build-up. Zlatko Dedic gave the home side a deserved lead on 44′, poking the ball home from within the 6-yard box. After the half things would only get worse for Russia, as substitute Aleksandr Kerzhakov was sent off after lashing out at Slovenian keeper Samir Handanovic. Hiddink poured men forwards, playing three in the back, but to no avail. With just seconds left to play emotions were running high, and Chelsea-man Yuri Zhirkov received his second yellow of the night – for pushing over a Slovenian sub standing on the sidelines – and was promptly sent off. With that, 9-man Russia were sent packing as well, with the bitter taste of irony in their mouths – this tmie it was the right calls against them which turned out to be costly.

France 1-1 Republic of Ireland (2-1 Agg.) – Well, if the Russia-Slovenia match was less contentious than expected, it was more than made up for by the match that took place in St. Denis, just outside of Paris, France. Les Bleus came into the match with a 1-0 aggregate lead, thanks to a Nicolas Anelka goal in the first leg. However, it didn’t take long for the Irish to eliminate that lead; after a fluid movement by the Boys in Green down the left side of the pitch, Robbie Keane stepped up to sidefoot the ball home on 33′. 1-1. And that was it. For the rest of regular time, the score remained the same. Cue overtime. On 103′, a long, arcing ball was sent into the Irish box. Thierry Henry met the end of it. With his hand. Perhaps it was unintentional, that first touch. But then he touched it again, tapping the ball gently with his left hand, stopping it from going out of bounds and putting it directly to his foot. Then to William Gallas. Who scored. France, you are going to the World Cup. And you should be ashamed. Henry’s handball was the most blatant example of that offense I’ve seen since, well, probably Diego Maradona. You can call him crafty, you can say it’s a part of the game, but I call that poor sportsmanship and I do not think France deserve to be going to the World Cup. Hell, Titi even celebrated wildly, going mad after Gallas put the ball in the net. I call bullshit. I’m sure tons of people will be calling for instant replay to be introduced after this blatant incident of cheating, and while I am still against it, I am starting to think they have a point. Ireland is asking FIFA to declare the match null & void and have a rematch, but it seems unlikely. Normally, I would insert some kind of hopeful point here, some bright side or silver lining. But there is none. There is nothing to be but bitter.

A strategy only a mother could love.

Greece 1-0 Ukraine (1-0 Agg.) – Greece bores me to death. And apparently, they bore the Ukraine to death as well. Otto Rehhagel’s men did it again, squeaking by on a single goal over two legs to knock all Slavic representatives out of next year’s World Cup final. Unfortunately, my predictions that the home side would be buoyed by their vociferous supporters fell flat. Though the crowd at the brand-new Donbass Arena in Donetsk was more than vocal, their voice alone could not lift their flat-footed squad, who fell prey to the clever, but undeniably dull, Greek strategy. Dimitris Salpingidis would be the man who made the difference for Greece, scoring on the back of a deadly combination of well-timed throughball and better-timed run (31′). Rehhagel’s defensive strategy took over from that point on, and though the home side had their fair share of chances, the Greek defense proved inpenetrable. Last night’s victory means that the Greeks are going to their first World Cup in 16 years; the Ukrainians will probably go take a nap.

And with that, Internationals are done until the new year (good riddance!). I’m glad to say good-bye for now; and the next time we meet will be in South Africa.

“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I can assure you it is much more important than that.” When one of soccer’s most successful coaches, Bill Shankly of Liverpool, uttered these words decades ago he wouldn’t have expected them to eventually carry a much more sinister meaning than he intended.

Since Shankly’s heyday in the 1960s, the world’s most popular sport has been transformed into a cutthroat business, manna for the media, a political plaything and war by other means. The Scotsman’s dry humor doesn’t seem so amusing when in the background what was once just a game is pulled and stretched beyond recognition. All this tugging is causing the unravelling of soccer’s fabric.

This self-destructiveness was in evidence last Saturday when Greece coach Otto Rehhagel faced journalists following his side’s 0-0 draw with Ukraine in Athens in the first leg of the 2010 World Cup playoff between the two teams.

The result put a dent — a fixable one as it turned out — in the national team’s hopes of making it to South Africa. Despite the disappointment in the air, Rehhagel had little to be apologetic about. Even if his eight-year tenure in the job was about to end on a low, his place in the history books was already assured. He had steered Greece, a team with a history of catastrophic failure sparingly peppered with mild success, to unprecedented glory.

However, typical of soccer’s growing trend for chewing up and spitting out the people that keep the game alive, Rehhagel received shabby treatment from the Greek press on Saturday, as he has done for the last few months – treatment that does not befit a man who guided Greece to the Euro 2004 trophy when the odds of him doing so were greater than those for discovering Elvis alive and rebuilding Graceland on the moon so he could rent it out to Martians on vacation.

Arriving a few minutes late for the press conference, Rehhagel was on the end of a tirade from an experienced Greek broadcaster unhappy at being kept waiting. A man who had spent more than 50 years in the game as player and coach was being treated like a worthless rookie by a peer who should have known much better. Fortunately for the German, his lack of familiarity with the Greek language meant he could ignore the verbal volley.

But he could not dismiss the repeated questions about his defensive formation. Everybody wanted to know why Greece could not posses the attacking flair of Brazil, while conveniently ignoring the fact that Rehhagel picks most of his players from a substandard league – corrupt since it was conceived and continuously abused by the clubs that dominate it.

In what was potentially his last post-match news conference in Greece, Rehhagel was treated with disdain — journalists walked away muttering various epithets for the 71-year-old German. A man who was feted as a god five years ago was now being dismissed as persona non grata.

How ironic it was that Rehhagel’s shabby treatment came just a few hours before the German Football Federation (DFB) President Theo Zwanziger uttered words, which, if soccer is to save itself, should become as memorable as Shankly’s. “Soccer is not everything,” he said. “It must not be everything in life. Think not only of glory. Think about what is in a person, about doubts and weaknesses.”

Zwanziger was speaking at the memorial service for the German national goalkeeper, Robert Enke, who earlier in the week had committed suicide by walking in front of a train near Hanover as his latest bout of depression became too much for him to bear.

Although a tragedy, Enke’s suicide is a reminder of why soccer, or any sport, is worth people’s time. Dirk Enke, Robert’s father, a psychologist who tried to help the goalkeeper through his dark moments, intimated as much when he explained why his son feared being admitted to a psychiatric clinic. “He was always very close to taking this step but then he would say: ‘If I went into a psychiatric clinic, then that would be the end of football for me. That is the only thing I am good at and enjoy doing.’”

Enjoyment is a word that is disappearing from the vocabulary of fans, players, coaches, officials and journalists. We speculate, analyze and criticize but few people really enjoy a game of soccer any more. If the result is good, then the style of play is not satisfactory. If the team performs with panache but doesn’t win, then it might as well not have taken to the field. We are no longer allowed to dwell on the ethereal qualities of the game: mesmerizing skill, spellbinding teamwork, unadulterated passion and honest endeavor. Instead, we are buried under a landslide of tangibles: league points, transfer fees, lengths of contracts, annual wages and financial debt.

Perhaps it’s fitting that Robert Enke’s words should remind us what soccer is about. The Hanover 96 goalkeeper’s 2-year-old daughter died of a rare heart ailment in 2006 and in an interview after her death, he explained what sport meant for him while his child went through regular treatment. “Soccer was a wonderful distraction,” he said.

One of the keys to Rehhagel’s success in Greece is that he has never taken himself, or anyone else, too seriously. For all the frenzied reactions to his team’s poor performances, he maintains the zen-like calm of a man who knows that he’s just part of a wonderful distraction. Now at the age of 71, he feels no compulsion to pander to the fantasies of many fans and journalists who choose to ignore the limited resources the country has to offer.

Rehhagel confounded his detractors again by securing qualification to the World Cup with a 1-0 win in Ukraine on Wednesday. He will be lauded and welcomed back into Greece’s bosom, until the next poor performance, when the doubts and insults resume.

But those responsible would do well to realize that soccer is not more important than life or death. In fact, it is life, and as we were reminded in recent days, it is death as well — and through their actions, day by day, little by little, they are killing the beautiful game.

Das Thema Otto Rehhagel war eigenlich schon durch. Griechische Tageszeitungen forderten zu Beginn der Woche die Ablösung des verdienten, aber wegen seines unansehnlichen Defensivfußballs in die Kritik geratenen Europameisters von 2004 und schlugen allen Ernstes Löwen-Trainer Ewald Lienen als potenziellen Nachfolger vor. Seit gestern Abend sind aber alle Spekulationen vom Tisch, denn der alte Fuchs Rehhagel schaffte es doch tatsächlich wie durch ein Wunder, sich in seinem 100. Länderspiel mit den Hellenen noch für die WM in Südafrika zu qualifizieren. Am Ende stand nach einem 0:0 im Hinspiel ein errumpeltes 1:0 über den Favoriten Ukraine zu Buche – minimaler Aufwand, maximaler Ertrag.

Mich freut es, denn ohne die launigen Interviews mit Otto Rehhagel wäre jedes große Turnier nur halb so schön. Schon gestern nutzte er im Anschluss ans Spiel die Gelegenheit, seinem Frust etwas Luft zu machen und ARD-Mann Uli Köhler sowie dessen Kollegen gleich noch einen Berufswechsel (immerhin bei besserer Bezahlung) zu empfehlen:

Sollte nun nichts Unvorhergesehenes passieren, ist auch Clubberer Angelos Charisteas im Sommer in Südafrika mit dabei. Das müsste ihn doch eigentlich dazu motivieren, sich auch beim FCN wieder etwas mehr reinzuhängen. Dass die personifizierte Abschlussschwäche allerdings am Samstag beim Gastspiel in Wolfsburg in der Startelf stehen wird, darf momentan jedoch stark bezweifelt werden…

A mercifully short list of meaningful matches this weekend. I’m not going to bother with the friendlies, as most of them ended as you would expect and, after all, they’re just friendlies. I will however, give a mention to the Canadian national team, who lost 3-0 to Macedonia after missing a pair of penalties and having one converted against them. Just a friendly, but bravo…

Anyhow, here are the matches that have actual consequences; the World Cup qualifier playoffs:

Not Pictured: Portugal's #1 Keeper.

Portugal 1-0 Bosnia-Herzegovina – Three times. Three times a Bosnian player took his best strike at the Portugese net, and three times the home side was saved in Lisbon by the magical touch of – wait for it – the woodwork. Forget Eduardo; the guy had nothing to do all night except look relieved as both posts and the crossbar did all his work for him. My prediction: in the second leg of the playoff, Eduardo finds himself replaced by a Portugese Oak. Anyhow, thanks to the heroism of the wood, Portugal were able to shade Bosnia on the strength of a Bruno Alves goal; even without their precious Cristiano Ronaldo leading them. This result also means that their visitors were denied the opportunity to net an all-too-valuable away goal; I suppose that’s Portugese hospitality for you! That being said, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to hide before I am pelted with Bacalhau.

France 1-0 Republic of Ireland – Unlike their Bosnian… er, cousins? the French were able to grab a crucial away goal and an even more valuable victory at Croke Park in Dublin. The luck of the Irish was all but absent, as Giovanni Trapattoni’s men missed a handful of sitters and Nicolas Anelka’s eventual winner deflected off of Sean St. Ledger before hitting the post and finding the back of the net. In fact, one might make the case that it was the luck of the French which prevailed in the Emerald Isle; though to be fair, France were the better side for much of the evening and Ireland at times simply did not look like they could hack it against such stiff opposition. Raymond Domenech’s men now have a somewhat comfortable lead to sit upon when they return for the playoff’s second leg in gay Paris.

That about sums it up, yea.

Greece 0-0 Ukraine – Greece manager Otto Rehhagel stated before this weekend’s match that a nil-nil draw in Athens would be the best result for Greece to achieve. Unsurprisingly, they managed it. The most boring side in International football were able to hold their Zhovto-Blakytni visitors to a no-score draw, hoping to scoop up victory in Kiev in the second leg of the playoff. In essence, they said “getting into the World Cup is a problem for future-Greece,” and then proceeded to park the bus for 90 minutes. Mind you, Bayer Leverkusen man Theofanis Gekas was able to put the ball into the back of the Ukrainian net, only for it to be disallowed on account of offside. At the opposite end of the pitch, it was Andriy Shevchenko who came closest for the visitors, but ultimately he would not be able to trouble the Greeks with an away goal in the clutch. Personally, I wonder about the wisdom in Greece’s tactics, as I feel one should play for victory on one’s own soil, as it is much easier to achieve a result without roughly 60,000 Ukrainians cheering against you. But hey, we’re talking about the team who managed to bore their way to European glory in 2004, so who knows? Maybe they’ll catch the Ukrainians napping. For my part, I certainly hope not.

"You will beat Slovenia, or you will be shot."

Russia 2-1 Slovenia – Bilyaletdinov. Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. Remember that name. Or, if you’re like me, figure out how to pronounce it, and then remember it. Anyways, he was the main man for Guus Hiddink’s Russia in their playoff fixture against Slovenia, bagging the brace that would lift the Russkies above their Slovenian visitors with a goal on 40′ and another on 51′. However, it would not be smooth sailing all the way at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, as Slovenian substitute Nejc Pecnik put some pressure on the home side in the 88th minute by finding the back of the net with a headed rebound. Watching the game, one could see that it wasn’t just the Russian weather that was imposing; the atmosphere in the Luzhniki was absolutely imperious and the presence of icy Russian President Vladimir Putin only added to that. Russia will be able to go into their second leg with some confidence, though as always they would be wise to beware the underdogs – the Slovenians showed they indeed have teeth, and will be looking to bite back with the support of their own home crowd.

Alle 14 è andato in scena il sorteggio dei playoff per i mondiali sudafricani. Le gare di andata si disputeranno il 14 novembre, il ritorno il 18 dello stesso mese. E’ andata male all’Irlanda di Giovanni Trapattoni e Marco Tardelli, che ha pescato la testa di serie numero uno, la Francia di Domenech. Il Portogallo, altra testa di serie, invece è stato abbinato alla Bosnia del trio Ibisevic-Misimovic-Dzeko, guidato dalla vecchia volpe Blazevic. Un altro guru del calcio europeo, Guus Hiddink, dovrà vedersela con la Slovenia, mentre la Grecia darà vita a due incontri presumibilmente equilibrati con l’Ucraina.

Irgendwo gibt es jetzt also einen jungen Menschen, der im Jahr 2024 im Ruhrgebiet als Trainer entlassen wird und noch nichts davon ahnt. Aber Otto Rehhagel wusste es schon, bevor besagter junger Mensch überhaupt geboren wurde. Großartig!

Hoffentlich packen die Griechen heute die direkte WM-Qualifikation – alleine Rehhagels Pressekonferenzen würden die WM nämlich sehr bereichern.

Iniziamo col Gruppo 1. Fra Ibrahimovic e Cristiano Ronaldo spuntano Poulsen e Tomasson. Nel girone che doveva vivere della sfida fra i neo emigranti verso la Spagna, guadagna punti la candidatura per la qualificazione diretta della Danimarca: i danesi ne hanno 17, cioè 7 di vantaggio sul Portogallo, 5 sulla Svezia. In mezzo, l’Ungheria a 13. Cristiano Ronaldo, se non vuole restare fuori dal Mondiale, deve andare a vincere in questo turno in Ungheria, almeno per riaprire la corsa al secondo posto. La squadra di Queiroz resta una delusione, condannata soprattutto dai pareggi (4 in 7 partite). Non tanto meglio quella di Lagerback, sabato rimessa in piedi dal colpo di “panza” di Ibrahimovic: per gli scandinavi trasferta abbordabili, a Malta per Zlatan, in Albania per i capogirone di Olsen.

Nel Gruppo 2 in corsa in tre, nessuna vera big nel girone, visto che la vittoria della Grecia all’Europeo è ormai vecchia di 5 anni. La Svizzera, dopo aver fatto valere il fattore campo contro la squadra di Rehhagel, va in Lettonia per ipotecare il primo posto: serve una vittoria, altrimenti Karagounis e compagni possono rifarsi sotto (strafavoriti nel pronostico nella trasferta in Moldova).

La Repubblica Ceca, Gruppo 3, si prepara alla goleada contro San Marino e affida le sue speranze di rimonta all’Irlanda del Nord: i britannici vincendo quello che è diventato il big-match del girone con la Slovacchia (Hamsik squalificato), non solo si rilancerebbero in testa la girone (ma con una gara in più), ma riaprirebbero i giochi anche per Slovenia e Polonia, che si sfidano in casa dei primi. Situazione più definita in caso di vittoria degli slovacchi, che si garantirebbero più di mezza qualificazione al Mondiale sudafricano.

Continua la sfida a distanza fra Germania e Russia nel Gruppo 4: anche qui una big finisce diritta agli spareggi. La nazionale di Ballack ha ancora un punto di vantaggio e un impegno facile in questo turno, in casa con l’Azerbaigian. La Russia di Hiddink però può contare sullo scontro diretto in casa che con ogni probabilità sarà decisivo. Servono i gol di Pavlyuchenko in Galles per arrivarci sempre a distanza di un punto, e tentare il sorpasso. La Finlandia, terza forza, va in Liechtenstein e deve sperare in molti passi falsi delle due davanti per rivedere sprazzi di Africa.

Anche se Vicente Del Bosque fa il prudente, la qualificazione della Spagna, nel Gruppo 5, è vicinissima, manca solo la certezza matematica: può arrivare già in questo turno se batte l’Estonia in casa e la Bosnia non supera la Turchia, o se pareggia e la Bosnia perde. Il secondo caso sarebbe comunque un evento, visto che i campioni d’Europa nel girone sono a 7 vittorie su 7. In pratica, si gioca per il 2° posto che può valere gli spareggi: resta in corsa anche Terim, che però deve andare nei Balcani a vincere.

Discorso simile alla Spagna per l’Inghilterra di Capello, a sua volta capace di 7 vittorie su 7. La Croazia, nel Gruppo 6, non è più lo spauracchio di 2 anni fa, quando eliminò gli inglesi dalla corsa all’Europeo: merito di Capello, che l’ha esorcizzata nella gara di andata. I Leoni per la qualificazione anticipata hanno bisogno di vincere, la squadra di Bilic deve guardarsi dal ritorno dell’Ucraina per il 2° posto (Sheva va in Bielorussia)

Il Gruppo 7 è quello di Serbia-Francia, ovvero la partita di Domenech: la fiducia nel c.t. vice-campione del Mondo, già rinnovata a stento dopo gli Europei, è ai minimi storici. Sono in molti in Francia a pensare che, se non arriverà una vittoria a Belgrado, per Raymond sarà esonero. Per molti giocatori, da Henry in giù (nonostante le smentite) sarebbe una liberazione, ma non posso no permettersi di “giocare contro”: con una sconfitta rischiano di vedere il Sud Africa in tv anche loro. In Romania-Austria, a sorpresa, quelli meglio piazzati per una rincorsa al 2° posto sono gli austriaci.

L’Olanda domina il Gruppo 9 è la prima qualificata europea: si gioca per il 2° posto, con la Scozia che cerca proprio contro Huntelaar e compagni i punti per mantenere il vantaggio sulla Norvegia (in casa con la Macedonia).

Il Resto del Mondo – Può rimanere fuori dal Mondiale la squadra che schiera insieme Messi e Aguero, il Paese che esporta giocatori nei maggiori campionati del globo? Il rischio esiste, così come quello che la nuova vita di Diego Armando Maradona, da c.t., termini presto. L’”apocalisse” argentina può verificarsi perdendo in Paraguay. A quel punto rischierebbero di essere tre le qualificate: i paraguaiani con Brasile e Cile, che si sfidano a Salvador de Bahia. E l’albiceleste dovrebbe giocarsi negli ultimi due turni con Ecuador (in Bolivia), Colombia e Uruguay (scontro diretto a Montevideo) una qualificazione e un passaggio per gli spareggi.

Il Messico è davvero rinato, dopo la partenza di Eriksson? Il 3-0 sul Costa Rica farebbe pensare di sì, la conferma deve arrivare in questo turno, contro l’Honduras di Suazo, sorprendentemente in testa al girone, alla pari con gli Usa, che vanno a Trinidad. Honduras, Usa, Messico e Costa Rica si giocano 3 posti al Mondiale, la 4ª agli spareggi, Salvador e Trinidad&Tobago ormai tagliate fuori.

Nei 5 gironi africani discorsi chiusi solo per il Ghana di Muntari, già qualificato. Oggi si gioca solo Camerun-Gabon, che è un recupero ma sarà la sfida decisiva per la qualificazione. Domenica scorsa, in Gabon, Eto’o ha guidato i suoi alla riscossa (0-2, un gol e un assist), a Yaoundé punta al sorpasso.

Im Februar 1991 feierte Sergio Zárate sein Debüt für den Club und erzielte dabei sogleich sein Premierentor. Ansonsten waren seine ersten Schritte in der Bundesliga mehr oder weniger durchwachsen, ehe er er in seiner zweiten Saison rasch zum Nürnberger Publikumsliebling wurde, das ihn, vermutlich in Anlehnung an seinen heimatlichen Kosenamen “el ratón”, rasch zur Zaubermaus erkor. Damit fand – man möge mich korrigieren, falls es ältere Beispiele gibt –  ein neuer Universalname für kleine, wuslige Dribbler Eingang in das Handbuch für Fußballfans und Sportjournalisten.

Zwar ist mir persönlich in der Bundesliga nur bei zwei drei weiteren Spielern die Verwendung des Namens erinnerlich: Ratinho und Dariusz Wosz (Nr. 3: siehe ganz unten); eine kurze Anfrage bei Google kommt indes zu anderen Ergebnissen: Zaubermaus Bundesliga bringt mehr als 9000 Treffer und führt allein auf den ersten Seiten zu mindestens 10 verschiedenen Zaubermäusen.

Ratinho spielte zu Otto Rehhagels glorreichen Lauterer Zeiten groß auf, vor allem in Liga zwei, aber auch noch in der Meistersaison, und erfreute die Fans mit kreativen Dribblings und Interviews, aus denen insbesondere das Wort “Kokolores” hängen blieb, das ihn Rehhagel gelehrt haben soll. Laut Wikipedia ist er bisweilen noch immer in der Pfalz unterwegs und gibt “Unterricht in Fußball-Sommercamps im Raum Kaiserslautern und Umgebung“.

Dariusz Wosz zauberte in Bochum und, etwas weniger erfolgreich, in Berlin. Unvergessen ist mir ein Spiel geblieben (wenn auch nur aus der Sportschau-Zusammenfassung), in dem er nach deutlichem Rückstand gegen die Bayern aufdrehte und phasenweise ganz allein 70% Ballbesitz zu haben schien – allerdings, wie so oft, wenn Bochum gegen die Münchner spielte und spielt, außer einem Treffer ohne relevanten Erfolg.

Weitere Zaubermäuse heißen beispielsweise Carlos Eduardo, Diego, Lincoln, Marek Penksa, Franck Ribéry, Vicente Sanchez, Andres d’Alessandro oder auch Marko Marin – letzterem hat allerdings Jannik in seinem Blog Entscheidend is auf’m Platz ein wenig Wasser in den Zaubermaus-Wein gekippt:

Kommentator Matthias Stach pries Marin, den Unruhefaktor für gegnerische Abwehrreihen, bei fast jedem Ballkontakt als „Zauberzwerg” an, was erneut die Frage aufwarf, ob es einem 20-jährigen nicht doch irgendwie peinlich ist, die Bezeichnungen „Zauberzwerg” und „Zaubermaus” ganz oben im Spitznamenkatalog zu führen. Irgendwie klingt das so gar nicht nach Bartwuchs, Führerschein und der Befugnis, im Supermarkt nach Vorlage des Personalausweises jedes beliebige Getränk erwerben zu können. Aber bin ich Imageberater?

Womit wir wieder bei den Gemeinsamkeiten fast aller Zaubermäuse wären: dribbeln können sie, häufig sind sie schnell, und nicht selten kaum größer als 1,70m, wenn überhaupt. Weshalb ich mich frage, wie es soweit kommen kann, dass die Cannstatter Kurve in der kommenden Saison wieder einem 1 Meter 85 großen Spieler als “Zaubermaus” huldigen wird:

Schön, dass er wieder da ist, und natürlich werde ich mit”singen”. Aber die Euphorie um seine Rückkehr macht mir auch ein wenig Angst. Die Tore sollte dann schon ein anderer schießen. Und als linker Verteidiger taugt er auch nicht.

Tras tres años de dominio incontestable de los equipos del calcio un nuevo equipo llegado desde el norte europeo, el Bayern de Munich, logró terminar con la hegemonía del fútbol transalpino en la Copa de la UEFA tal y como logró cuatro años atrás el Ajax de Amsterdam. El club bávaro supo aprovechar aquella campaña su presencia en esta competición continental para llevarse a sus vitrinas el único título que le quedada por adjudicarse, igualando así, las gestas de la Juventus de Turín y del citado Ajax holandés que con anterioridad obtuvieron la ‘triple corona’.

El Bayern alejado de la máxima competición aglutinó a un auténtico equipazo, concebido para mayores cotas futbolísticas, dirigidos por dos grandes técnicos: primeramente Otto Rehhagel y ya en la final el gran Franz Beckenbauer. Su inicio en la competición fue pésimo perdiendo en el estadio Olímpico de Munich por la mínima ante el Lokomotiv de Moscú con un gol de Kosolapov en el minuto 70. Sin embargo, los muniqueses enmendaron su error venciendo en terreno ruso por 0-5 con dos goles de Jürgen Klinsmann. La segunda ronda no trajó sorpresa alguna doblegando con facilidad a los escoceses del Raith Rovers algo que repetirían frente a su rival en la tercera ronda, el Benfica portugués, al que batirían con contundencia (7-2 en el cómputo global). El delantero Klinsmann logró anotar seis de los siete goles del Bayern frente a los lisboetas. En los cuartos de final apea de la competición al Nottingham Forest. Tras un encuentro de ida igualado con victoria bávara por 2-1, goles de Klinsmann y Scholl, el partido de vuelta disputado en Inglaterra muestra nuevamente un Bayern resolutivo y derrota al Forest por 1-5. La capacidad de superación de los alemanes se demuestra en las semifinales en las que elimina al FC Barcelona tras ceder en el partido de ida un empate a dos goles, pero en el partido de vuelta vence por 1-2 (goles de Babbel y Witeczek) para acceder a la final.

El segundo finalista fue el sorprendente equipo galo del Girondins de Burdeos liderado por tres internacionales franceses como Zinedine Zidane, Christophe Dugarry y Bixente Lizarazu junto al holandés Richard Witschge, que se coló en la Copa de la UEFA gracias al impulso por parte del máximo organismo del fútbol continental a un torneo casi desconocido llamado Copa Intertoto. Tras ser unos de sus vencedores el club bordelés realizó una gran campaña que le llevó a la gran final. Su debut fue inmejorable, beneficiándose de la excelente forma que les facilitó la competición veraniega de la Copa Intertoto, al superar cómodamente al Vardar macedonio por un marcador global de 3-1. Con idéntico marcador eliminó al Rotor Volvogrado ruso en la segunda ronda y al Real Betis Balompié en la tercera, con un magnífico tanto de Zidane desde el centro del campo del estadio Benito Villamarín. La eliminatoria de los cuartos de final también es espectacular, ya que tras perder en la ida ante el Milan (2-0) con goles de Eranio y Roberto Baggio, remonta el marcador en Burdeos al vencer al equipo milanista por 3-0, con dos goles de Dugarry. Finalmente, en las semifinales al Slavia de Praga con idéntico marcador en ambos encuentros (1-0).

En el partido de ida de la final el Bayern Múnich logró una importante victoria por dos a cero sobre el Girondins de Burdeos. El conjunto bávaro comenzó dominando el partido ante un rival cerrado en defensa, que se limitaba a cortar el juego de los alemanes y salir en rápidos contraataques. La táctica bordelesa dio sus frutos hasta la media hora de juego , e incluso pudo adelantarse en el marcador en el minuto 33, tras un fallo de Sforza en el centro del campo que Tholot no supo aprovechar cuando encaró solo la meta de Kahn. Un minuto después de esta gran ocasión llegó el primer gol del Bayern. Matthäus lanza un córner y Helmer, adelantándose a Grenet, conecta un perfecto cabezazo al fondo de la portería de Huard. Tras el gol, el Girondins estiró sus líneas y dispuso de otra clara ocasión antes del descanso, pero el disparo a bocajarro de Bancarel fue desviado por Kahn a córner. En la segunda mitad el Bayern incrementó su presión ante la meta francesa y pronto logró el merecido premio a su apuesta. Al cuarto de hora de juego, Scholl tras una jugada personal lograba el 2-0. Tras el tanto, el Girondins no perdió la cara al partido hasta la conclusión del encuentro disponiendo de algunas oportunidades para acortar diferencias, aunque también el Bayern dispuso las suyas para ampliar su ventaja.

El Bayern culminó una de las temporadas más tempestuosas de su historia añadiendo la Copa de la UEFA a su palmarés, único título europeo que aún faltaba en sus vitrinas. De esta forma, el conjunto bávaro ingresa en el selecto club de equipos que han conquistado las tres competiciones europeas en curso (Copa de Europa, Recopa y Copa de la UEFA), junto con Ajax y Juventus. La primera mitad del encuentro se planteó como un ejercicio de acoso francés sobre la portería de Kahn. Sin embargo, apenas un par de intentos por la izquierda del lateral Lizarazu (el mejor de su equipo hasta que tuvo que retirarse del campo tras una alevosa entrada de Kostadinov) y varios tiros lejanos y sin puntería constituyeron todo el bagaje ofensivo de un Girondins que aún parecía estar lamentando las oportunidades desperdiciadas en Múnich. El Bayern apenas se aproximó con peligro a la meta de Huard, tan sólo en una contra finalizada por Kostadinov con un disparo alto. Tras el descanso, el gol de Mehmet Scholl rompió definitivamente el partido y acabó con las esperanzas de remontada del conjunto francés. La losa del 0-1 resultó demasiado pesada para el Girondins, que incluso permitió que Jürgen Klinsmann anotara su decimoquinto gol en la presente competición de la Copa de la UEFA, récord absoluto en el fútbol europeo en una sola temporada.

El dominio alemán en el fútbol continental comenzaba a ser cada vez más patente cuando un año más tarde el Schalke 04 relevó al Bayern como campeón de la UEFA. Este club de Gelsenkirchen obtenía su primer título europeo y junto a la sorpendente victoria del Borussia Dortmund en la Liga de Campeones corroboraba a Alemania como la primera potencia en Europa justamente un año después de conquistar su selección la Eurocopa en Inglaterra.

El triunfo del Schalke fue sorprendente ya que se trataba de su primera aparición en las rondas finales de una competición internacional y lo logró derrotando a un equipo ‘grande’ en la tanda de penaltis. El éxito del Schalke fue conjuntar un bloque férreo y homogéneo que fue cogiendo moral según fue avanzando en el torneo. Dirigidos Huub Stevens aglutinó a un nutrido grupo de experimentados jugadores alemanes, liderados por el capitán Olaf Thon, junto a unos jugadores foráneos de exquisita calidad técnico como el belga Wilmots y los checos Latal y Nemec.

El Schalke inició su andadura en la UEFA derrotando al Roda holandés por un marcador global de 5 goles a dos, tres de ellos anotados por el belga Marc Wilmots. En la segunda ronda sufrió para eliminar al Trabzonspor turco (4-3 en el global) siendo claves los dos goles del veterano delantero Martin Max. En la tercera ronda venció con apuros al Brujas belga, tras perder en Bélgica por 2-1, el Schalke remontó en la vuelta gracias a un marcador favorable de 2-0.

En las dos rondas previas a la final los alemanes doblegaron a dos rivales españoles. En los cuartos de final, el Schalke vencía al Valencia en la ida celebrada en Gelsenkirchen por dos goles a cero (tantos de Linke y Wilmots) y lograba un empate a un gol en Mestalla siendo Mulder el autor del tanto. Las semifinales fueron agónicas ante el sorprendente Tenerife entrenador por el técnico alemán Jupp Heyckes. En las Islas Canarias, los tinerfeños sufrieron para ganar por la mínima a los germanos gracias a un gol de Felipe Miñambres desde el punto de penalti al inicio del encuentro. En el partido de vuelta, estuvo a punto de saltar la sorpresa, pero el Schalke forzó la prórroga con un gol de Linke mediada la segunda parte. En el tiempo suplementario un postrero gol de Wilmots en el minuto 108 dio el pase a la final a los alemanes y dejó en los españoles una inmensa decepción.

El Inter de Milán regresó a una final de la Copa de la UEFA y también fue el retorno de un club italiano a dicho encuentro tras un año de ausencia a una competición que en los pasados años era feudo de los equipos de Italia. Dirigidos por el técnico inglés Roy Hodgson iniciaron la competición venciendo cómodamente a los franceses del EA Guimgamp (4-1 en el cómputo global) pero sufrieron muchísimo para eliminar al Casino Graz austríaco. En la ida disputada en San Siro los interistas sólo lograron vencer por la mínima gracias a un gol en los minutos finales del defensa francés Jocelyn Angloma. El partido de vuelta, en terreno austriaco, un gol de Sabitzer iguala una eliminatoria que se decide en la tanda de penaltis. Desde los once metros, los interistas se muestran infalibles y un error de Dampfhofer da el pase a la siguiente ronda al Inter. En la tercera ronda, y con la lección aprendida, los italianos vencen con contundencia al Boavista portugues (7-1 en el global) pero en los cuartos de final vuelven a ser sufridos ante el Anderlecht. Tras empatar un gol en Bruselas, el Inter derrota por 2-1 a los belgas en el encuentro de vuelta. El héroe de la eliminatoria es Maurizio Ganz autor de los tres goles interistas. En las semifinales se miden a un equipo en auge: un Mónaco con Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet, el brasileño Sonny Anderson o el nigeriano Ikpeba en sus filas. En Inter logra un resultado tranquilizador en la ida disputada en Milán (3-1) gracias a los goles de Ganz (2) y Zamorano. Sin embargo en el partido de vuelta disputado en el Principado, el Mónaco coloca contra las cuerdas al Inter durante los veinte minutos finales. El autor del gol monegasco en la ida, Ikpeba, vuelve a marcar pero es insuficiente para acceder a la final.

El Schalke 04 lograba una corta victoria (1-0) en el partido de ida de la final gracias a un derechazo del belga Marc Wilmots que premió el juego de su equipo frente al conservadurismo del Inter. Los italianos también sucumbieron en el fortín del Parkstadion, en donde todos los equipos visitantes en esta competición habían caído derrotados sin haber logrado siquiera marcar un solo gol al conjunto alemán. El Inter, sin el concurso de Djorkaeff, mantuvo en todo momento una actitud conservadora y cedió terreno a los germanos, que aceptaron el reto de llevar la iniciativa en el juego. Los tímidos contragolpes interistas apenas pusieron en aprietos a Lehmann, salvo en uno de ellos en el que Ganz puso a prueba los reflejos del excelente meta alemán. Tras el descanso, el Schalke 04 apretó los dientes y fue el delantero belga Wilmots, en jugada indivudual, el que iluminó el sueño de la hinchada alemana con un terrible zapatazo desde 30 metros que sorprendió a Pagliuca. Con su presencia en el partido, el capitán interista Giuseppe Bergomi estableció un nuevo récord de partidos jugados en competición europea: 98 encuentros.

Desde los once metros, el Schalke 04 conquistó su primer título europeo, tras forzar el Inter la prórroga con un gol de Zamorano en los últimos minutos. El equipo italiano inició el partido de vuelta de la final muy temeroso con el juego ofensivo alemán contando con excesivas precauciones defensivas. No fue hasta pasada la media hora de juego cuando el Inter pudo estirarse y merodear la meta del Schalke. En ese periodo de tiempo, los alemanes dispusieron de dos ocasiones para sentenciar la final: la primera en un centro-chut de Wilmots y la segunda en un obús del zurdo Büskens. El equipo alemán logró controlar también el juego durante la segunda mitad, y Pagliuca tuvo nuevamente que salvar su portería de otro zapatazo de Büskens que buscaba la escuadra. Cuando el partido parecía condenado al 0-0 inicial, el ex madridista Iván Zamorano aprovechó uno de los pocos balones que le llegó en condiciones y batió a Lehmann a media altura, forzando así la prórroga. En el inicio del tiempo suplementario el Inter se quedaba con un jugador menos, ya que Fresi vio su segunda tarjeta amarilla. A partir de esos momentos el cuadro lombardo ofreció su mejor nivel de juego y hasta pudo haber resuelto el partido con un disparo de Ganz que repelió el travesaño. El tiempo concluyó sin más alteración en el marcador por lo que tuvo que recurrir a la tanda de penaltis para determinar el vencedor. Lehmann se convirtió en el héroe de su equipo al detener el primer lanzamiento interista, a cargo de Zamorano. Posteriormente, Winter enviaba fuera su disparo y Wilmots certificaba la victoria del modesto Schalke 04.

Making Kyrgiakos captain was not enough to limit the damage when playing the red team away, so now we’ve slipped to sixth.  We’ll have to wait another week to move back up though, since World Cup 2010 qualifiers return this weekend.

Speaking of which, former AEK star Lyberopoulos is trying to rally the fans behind the national team by reminding us that the match again Moldova Saturday will be tough.  Coming off our bruising humiliation this past summer at Euro 2008, this seems like a much more sober approach to the match and the state of Greek soccer than UEFA’s latest puff piece.  UEFA claims Greece are the only country to have won both of their opening qualifiers and that the squad seems recovered from the humiliation of Euro 2008.

Look, we’ve got a decent squad, not question.  But our first two matches were against Luxembourg and Latvia for goodness sake.  I’m quite sure no other country had two such easy fixtures for their first matches.  It proves nothing then.  Worse, hype articles like this one obscure the fact that we need Otto to make some serious changes to the squad before the actual World Cup.  As Amanatides stated after Euro 2008, we need to play faster, more attacking-oriented football.  To do this, we need to call up more of the youngsters, like Ninis and Papastathopoulos, and offload some of the older statesmen who have served their country well but whose bodies are breaking down and are in no shape for a major international tournament against the world’s finest players.

Those of you who read my game review from last weekend’s derby know I think quite a lot of Pliatsikas. Apparently, so does King Otto.

Pliatsikas’s first call-up, combined with Rehhagel’s call-up of Ninis and exclusion of Giannakopoulos may mean that King Otto is finally about the business of revamping the National Team.

Die Auslosungen von Champions League und UEFA-Pokal sind perfekt. Immerhin acht Vereine repräsentieren die Bundesliga international: FC Bayern München und Werder Bremen in der Champions League; Schalke 04, der HSV, VfB Stuttgart, Hertha BSC, VfL Wolfsburg und Borussia Dortmund im UEFA-Cup.

Die Gegner der deutschen Vereine im Überblick:

• FC Bayern München trifft in der Gruppe F der Champions League auf Olympique Lyon, Steaua Bukarest und den AC Florenz – definitiv eine der leichteren Gruppen der Champions League.
  Härtester Konkurrent wird wohl Olympique sein: Die Mittelfeldachse mit Juninho, Ederson, Jean Makoun und Kim Källström ist bemerkenswert, im Sturm ist der französische Torschützenkönig und EM-Teilnehmer Karim Benzema eine Gefahr. Auch die Abwehr präsentiert sich wohl sortiert: Fabio Grosso und Cris, der mehrfach zum besten Spieler Frankreichs gewählt wurde, agieren in der Abwehr. Es wird interessant zu sehen sein, wie Bayern Lyon über die Flügel zu knacken versuchen wird.
  Zu Steaua Bukarest muss man nicht viele Worte verlieren. Glaubt man den Statistiken von Transfermarkt.de, dann ist der gesamte Steaua-Kader (etwa 27,4 Mio. €) weniger wert als Franck Ribéry (30 Mio. €) oder Luca Toni (28,5 Mio. €) alleine. Eine Niederlage ist nicht zu erwarten.
  Bei AC Florenz sieht es in dieser Beziehung anders aus. Mit Adrian Mutu gibt es einen Mittelfeldspieler vom Kaliber eines Ribéry, mit Giampaolo Pazzini (wurde mehrfach mit Auszeichnungen im Junioren-Bereich bedacht) und vor allem Nationalstürmer Alberto Gilardino, der vor der Saison vom AC Mailand in die Toskana wechselte und in 25 Länderspielen neun Tore erzielte, existiert auch Qualität im Sturm. Die Bayern-Defensive wird hier wohl am meisten gefordert werden, um diese drei Offensiven aus dem Spiel zu nehmen.
• Werder Bremen wurde gemeinsam mit Inter Mailand, Panathinaikos Athen und Anorthosis Famagusta in Gruppe B gelost. Auch für die Mannschaft von der Weser ist ein Weiterkommen eigentlich Pflicht.
  Gegen Inter Mailand wird es die Elf von Thomas Schaaf extrem schwer haben. Eine exzellente Defensive, ein stark besetztes Mittelfeld um Esteban Cambiasso und ein herausragender Sturm mit Persönlichkeiten wie Adriano, Zlatan Ibrahimovic und Hérnan Crespo – dazu José Mourinho auf der Bank. Die Bremen werden es wohl schon als Erfolg feiern, dem amtierenden italienischen Meister ein Unentschieden abzutrotzen.
  Panathinaikos könnte unter Umständen zu einem Stolperstein für Werder werden. Vor allem der Stürmer Dimitrios Salpingidis ist hier zu nennen, in der Champions-League-Qualifikation war er in drei Spielen an drei Toren beteiligt (zwei selbst erzielt, eines vorbereitet), in der letzten Spielzeit erzielte er in Griechenland 15 Tore in 29 Spielen, außerdem noch vier Treffer in sieben UEFA-Cup-Spielen. Bemerkenswert ist auch der Österreicher Andreas Ivanschitz im Mittelfeld, der bei der EM durchaus auf sich aufmerksam machte und einer der besten Österreicher des Turniers war. Auch Georgios Karagounis, der in der Vergangenheit für Inter Mailand und Benfica Lissabon spielte, ist einer der besseren Spieler des Panathinaikos-Mittelfelds. Auch Gilberto Silva, vor der Saison vom FC Arsenal gewechselt, gibt der Mittelfeldachse von Athen Stabilität und sichert vor allem defensiv ab. Der große Brasilianer wird mit seiner enormen internationalen Erfahrung Diego aus dem Spiel zu nehmen versuchen – und es scheint nicht ganz unrealistisch zu sein, wenn man davon ausgeht, dass der Bremer dabei nicht vollkommen befreit wird aufspielen können.
  Anorthosis Famagusta hat etwa die Qualität eines deutschen Zweitligisten. Der bekannteste Name im Team der Zyprer dürfte neben Abwehrspieler Traianos Dellas, der bei der EM für Griechenland spielte und auch schon vier Jahre zuvor beim Titelgewinn für die Rehhagel-Elf spielte, der Ex-Aachener Jeffrey Leiwakabessy sein. Allerdings sind die Zypern-Teams auch für ihre Heimstärke bekannt, einen Auswärtssieg im Schongang sollte Bremen keinesfalls einkalkulieren.
• Schalke 04 ist nach dem Aus in der Champions-League-Qualifikation nun gegen Apoel Nikosia gefordert. Bekannte Namen sind auch hier Mangelware, hervorzuheben ist allenfalls Nuno Morais (Ex-FC-Chelsea) und Kamil Kosowski, der bei der WM 2006 für Polen spielte. Ein eher leichter Gegner für die Königsblauen.
• Beim HSV-Gegner Unirea Urziceni mach ich’s kurz: Ich kenne die Rumänen nicht, keiner der Spieler hat einen Marktwert in annähernder Millionenhöhe. Würde der HSV rausfliegen, wäre es eine unglaubliche Blamage.
• Auch der VfB Stuttgart muss in den Ostblock, genauer gesagt zu Cherno More Varna. Keine bekannten Namen, ein eher belangloser Gegner, der mit Milen Petkov einen ehemaligen bulgarischen Nationalspieler in seinen Reihen hat. Wie beim HSV gilt auch hier: Eine Niederlage wird peinlich.
• Hertha BSC zieht es nach Irland, der Gegner heißt St. Patrick’s Athletic. Im europäischen Fußball sicherlich ein kleines Licht, aber dennoch sehr kampfstark. Spielerisch wird man von den Iren wenig erwarten, aber sie werden sich sehr lange wehren und immer auf die Sensation hoffen: Ein Konter und alles ist möglich.
• Der VfL Wolfsburg hat zumindest einen nicht gänzlich unbekannten Gegner zugelost bekommen: Rapid Bukarest. Die Rumänen sind regelmäßig im UEFA-Cup vertreten und haben auch durchaus Spieler mit Qualität in ihren Reihen: Der brasilianische Stürmer Júlio César spielte bereits sechs Partien in der Champions League und erzielte dort zwei Tore, der Montenegriner Radomir Dalovic spielte vor einigen Jahren für Arminia Bielefeld in der Bundesliga und konnte in der Nationalmannschaft drei Treffer in vier Partien feiern – und 18 Tore in 31 Spielen in der vergangenen Spielzeit der kroatischen Liga (für NK Rijeka) sprechen für sich.
• Den bekanntesten Gegner hat sicherlich Borussia Dortmund. Udinese Calcio hat laut Transfermarkt.de einen Kader mit höherem Marktwert als der Ruhrpott-Verein. Für Qualität stehen unter anderem der Schweizer EM-Teilnehmer Gökhan Inler, der vor der Saison ein Angebot des FC Arsenal über 25 Mio. € ablehnte, und die beiden italienischen EM-Teilnehmer Antonio di Natale und Fabio Quagliarella (beide im Sturm). Sicherlich einer der schwierigeren Gegner, aber keinesfalls eine unlösbare Aufgabe.
• INSGESAMT haben also alle deutschen Klubs sehr gute bis ausgezeichnete Chancen, die erste Runde der internationalen Wettbewerbe zu überstehen. Hoffen wir mal, dass der deutsche Fußball sich heuer auf dem europäischen Parkett wieder etwas besser aufgelegt präsentiert als es die Champions-League-Qualifikation mit Schalke und die nicht immer souveränen UEFA-Cup-Quali-Auftritte der deutschen Vereine befürchten lassen.

Die vergangene EM war bei den Trainern ein Clash of Cultures, ein Konkurrenzkampf der Ideologien. Eine Generation junger Trainer, sportwissenschaftlich ausgebildet und Experten in Sachen Trainingslehre und -auswertung, probte den Aufstand und trat an gegen die Nationaltrainer alter Prägung: Alles irgendwie aus dem Bauch oder der Erfahrung heraus, dafür aber mit einem unglaublichen Gespür.
Es stellt sich die Frage: Wer ist als Sieger hervorgegangen? Ich habe alle Nationaltrainer der EM in Gruppen eingeteilt und mir vorgenommen, einen näheren Blick auf beide Seiten zu werfen.

Vorneweg: Drei Trainer habe ich ausgespart. Roberto Donadoni (Italien), Jakob Kuhn (Schweiz) und Victor Piţurcă (Rumänien) konnte ich nicht eindeutig zuordnen. Bei Donadoni und Kuhn konnte ich mich nicht entscheiden, in welche Gruppe ich sie stecken sollte, bei Piţurcă wusste ich schlicht zu wenig.

Ansonsten stehen sich gegenüber:
Die Generation Laptop

• Joachim Löw (Deutschland). Der Inbegriff eines modernen Trainers. Als Spieler eher unbekannt, entwickelte er im Rahmen seiner Trainerausbildung Modelle zur idealen Anordnung einer Viererabwehrkette. Fitness und taktisches Zweikampfverhalten sind seine zentralen Forderungen, taktisches Verständnis für ihn absolute Pflicht.
• Marco van Basten (Niederlande). Der Reformator des niederländischen Fußballs. Wandte sich gegen die alten Lehrmeister, die Fußball als Offensivsport begriffen, und brachte der «Elftal» ein gesundes Defensivverhalten bei. Die Verbindung dieser beiden Welten, Offensive und Defensive, war für ihn das Ziel.
• Slaven Bilic (Kroatien). Bemühte sich um eine konsequente Verjüngung der kroatischen Nationalmannschaft. Das auf Luka Modric zugeschnittene System und seine Überlegungen zu Zweikampfüberlegenheit und deren Umsetzung befördern ihn eindeutig in diesen Kreis.
• Lars Lagerbäck (Schweden). Einer der ersten Vertreter der Videoanalyse. Der studierte Sportwissenschaftler ist ein Vertreter modernster Trainingslehre.
• Josef Hickersberger (Österreich). Wollte ein junges Team und orientierte sich an Deutschland bei der WM 2006. Scheinbar der neueste Schrei in der Gruppe der Laptop-Trainer: Fitness-Experten aus dem Team von Mark Verstegen. Auch Österreich hatte in diesem Bereich aufgerüstet

Die Generation Taktikfuchs

• Luis Aragonés (Spanien). Der älteste Trainer des Turniers stellte nach Symphathie auf, nominierte politisch missliebige Fußballer erst gar nicht für die EM und schien auch bei der jeweiligen Aufstellung nicht immer das Leistungsprinzip zu berücksichtigen (zum Beispiel bei Cesc Fabregas, der trotz guter Spiele kaum Einsatzminuten bekam).
• Otto Rehhagel (Griechenland). Sein Credo von einer sicheren Abwehr war sprichwörtlich. Griechenland igelte sich ein und spielte mit «König Ottos» altmodischer Defensiv-Taktik.
• Raymond Domenech (Frankreich). Bekannt dafür, bei der Aufstellung unter anderem auch die Sternzeichen der Spieler zu berücksichtigen.
• Karel Brückner (Tschechien). Die Standard-Taktik: Hohe Bälle auf Koller. Brückner ist nicht gerade für Revolutionen auf oder neben dem Platz bekannt.
• Luiz Felipe Scolari (Portugal). Der 59-jährige Brasilianer ist bemüht, effektive Spielsysteme zu finden und zu verfeinern. Portugals feiner Angriffsfußball in der Vorrunde ist ein Produkt dieser Anstrengungen.
• Fatih Terim (Türkei). Schwitzte an der Seitenlinie stapelweise Hemden durch. Die türkischen Siege in letzter Minute zeugen weniger von einer großen taktischen Leistung während des Spiels, sondern vom entscheidenden Glück auf den letzten Metern.
• Leo Beenhakker (Polen). Das Kollektiv steht bei dem niederländischen Trainer im Vordergrund und dementsprechend trat seine polnische Elf auf.
• Guus Hiddink (Russland). Die Stationen in seiner Trainerkarriere unterschieden sich stark, eine Grundkonstante blieb aber. Hiddink legt Wert darauf, den Gegner in Grund und Boden zu rennen und ihn durch Laufarbeit und Tempo aus dem Spiel zu nehmen.

Das Verfahren
Die in meinen Augen objektivste Möglichkeit des Vergleichs ist die Vergabe von Punkten für jedes Spiel. Die Spiele der KO-Runde habe ich auf das 3-Punkte-System umgerechnet, eine Entscheidung durch Elfmeterschießen (egal ob gewonnen oder verloren) zählt als Unentschieden.
Die Generation Laptop

• Deutschland: 12 Punkte (4 Siege, 2 Niederlagen)
• Niederlande: 9 Punkte (3 Siege, 1 Niederlage)
• Kroatien: 9 Punkte (3 Siege, 1 Niederlage)
• Schweden: 3 Punkte (1 Sieg, 2 Niederlagen)
• Österreich 1 Punkt (1 Unentschieden, 2 Niederlagen)
• Summe: 34 Punkte
• Durchschnitt (Punkte): 6,8
• Durchschnitt (Punkte pro Spiel): 1,7

Die Generation Taktikfuchs

• Spanien: 18 Punkte (6 Siege)
• Griechenland: 0 Punkte (3 Niederlagen)
• Frankreich: 1 Punkt (1 Unentschieden, 2 Niederlagen)
• Tschechien: 3 Punkte (1 Sieg, 2 Niederlagen)
• Portugal: 6 Punkte (2 Siege, 2 Niederlagen)
• Türkei: 9 Punkte (3 Siege, 2 Niederlagen)
• Polen: 1 Punkt (1 Unentschieden, 2 Niederlagen)
• Russland: 9 Punkte (3 Siege, 2 Niederlagen)

Die Auswertung
Quantitativ waren die Trainer der Generation Laptop bei dieser EM schwächer vertreten als die erfahrenen Taktikfüchse. Aber qualitativ konnte die neue Trainergeneration überzeugen. Im Schnitt haben Nationalmannschaften von Laptop-Trainern im Verlauf der EM einen Punkt mehr geholt, bei den Punkten pro absolviertem Spiel ergibt sich auch ein leichter Vorsprung von 0,25 Punkten für die Generation Laptop.
Dennoch: Wirklich stichhaltig sind diese Zahlen noch nicht, denn bei den Taktikfüchsen waren die Werte viel breiter gestreut als bei den Laptop-Anhängern. So müssen Otto Rehhagel, der sich ohne Punkt von dieser EM verabschiedete, und Luis Aragonés, der alle Spiele gewann, sich in die gleiche Kategorie einordnen lassen.
Repräsentative Ergebnisse wird es wohl erst geben, wenn sich über mehrere Europameisterschaften ein Verhältnis von 50:50 unter den Trainern eingestellt hat. Und: Vielleicht ist ja auch die mathematische Herangehensweise diskutabel; denn den schönsten Fußball der EM hat eine von einem Taktikfuchs betreute Mannschaft gespielt: Luis Aragonés’ Spanier.

Gruppe A

Portugal ist garantiert Gruppensieger, konnte die ersten beiden Spiele gewinnen und sich als erste Mannschaft den Einzug ins Viertelfinale sichern. Dabei spielte die Mannschaft von Luiz Felipe Scolari, der nach der EM Nachfolger von Avram Grant beim FC Chelsea wird, einen durchaus überzeugenden Fußball. Vor allem das erste Spiel der Portugiesen war sehr überzeugend!
Tschechien und die Türkei, beide mit drei Punkten und der gleichen Tordifferenz, streiten sich am kommenden Sonntag um den zweiten Platz. Endet die Partie unentschieden, geht es – der Punkt- und Torgleichheit sei dank – direkt nach den 90 Minuten ins Elfmeterschießen. Sowohl die Türken als auch die Tschechen konnten sich in ihrem zweiten Spiel spielerisch steigern, vor allem die Türken lieferten eine hochklassige Partie ab.
Die Schweiz ist bereits ausgeschieden.
Mein Tipp: Die Türkei kommt weiter, sagt der Bauch.

Gruppe B

Kroatien startete mit zwei Siegen in das Turnier und ist als erste Mannschaft der Gruppe B für das Viertelfinale qualifiziert, wo der Gegner entweder die Türkei oder Tschechien sein wird. Damit ist zumindest eine Überraschung perfekt: Deutschland ist nicht als erste Nation weitergekommen, was vor allem an der desaströsen Partie gegen Kroatien lag.
Dementsprechend sorgenvoll blickt die DFB-Elf jetzt auch in die Zukunft. Am Montagabend muss das Spiel gegen Österreich gewonnen werden, bei einer Niederlage wäre Österreich weiter. Wenn Polen gegen Kroatien nicht gewinnt, dann würde den Deutschen auch ein Unentschieden reichen. Unangenehm wird es jedoch in jedem Fall: Im Viertelfinale wartet mit Portugal ein starker Gegner. Den wollte man, so hieß es im deutschen Lager vor dem Turnier, eigentlich umgehen und frühestens im Halbfinale auf die Scolari-Elf treffen.
Mein Tipp: Deutschland hat die klar beste Ausgangslage. Mit mehr Laufbereitschaft als gegen Kroatien dürfte der Sieg gegen Österreich, das zwar gefällig kombinierte, aber immer etwas langsam auf den Beinen wirkte, zu keinem Zeitpunkt gefährdet sein.

Gruppe C

Die vor dem Turnier angesichts der vermeintlich starken Gruppe als ein Kandidat für das frühe Ausscheiden gehandelte Niederlande zeigte sich in bärenstarker Form. Bondscoach Marco van Basten hat sowohl eine abgeklärte Defensive als auch eine kreative Offensive aufgebaut, vor allem über die Außenpositionen kommt mit Arjen Robben und Robin van Persie sehr viel Druck, während Ruud van Nistelrooy in der Angriffszentrale dafür zuständig ist, die in seinen Laufweg geschlagenen Bälle vor der gegnerischen Verteidigung zu erreichen und ins Tor zu befördern. Klappt gut, die niederländische Elf! (Und kaum jemand hatte sie auf dem Zettel, wahrscheinlich wegen dem Aus in der Qualifikation für die WM 2006.)
Italien und Frankreich enttäuschten bislang. Während der von Roberto Donadoni trainierte Weltmeister hauptsächlich am eigenen Pech scheitert, gelingt es Frankreich nicht wirklich, Druck aus dem Mittelfeld aufzubauen. Vor allem auf den Außenverteidigerpositionen, die in den letzten Jahren ja zunehmend eine wichtigere Rolle im Angriffsspiel einnehmen und für Flanken sorgen sollen, ist die Elf von Raymond Domenech schwach besetzt. Rumänien ist zwar momentan auf einem überraschend guten Platz 2, wird aber nach dem letzten Spiel wohl doch ausscheiden. Einzig Adrian Mutu ist ein Spieler von internationalem Format, alle anderen Spieler sind gehobener Durchschnitt, der als eingeschworene Mannschaft ordentlich funktioniert. Wenn Frankreich und Italien sich steigern, dann sieht es schlecht aus für die Rumänen, die als nächsten Gegner auch noch die Niederlande vor sich haben.
Mein Tipp: Rumänien fliegt raus. Frankreich und Italien waren zuletzt außer Form, jetzt müssen sich beide steigern. Ich denke, dass Italien durch ein Tor von Luca Toni gewinnt. Bedingung dafür ist, dass die nach der Verletzung von Fabio Cannavaro geschwächte italienische Defensive Thierry Henry unter Kontrolle bekommt. Gennaro Gattuso wird dafür sorgen, dass sich Franck Ribéry wünscht, nicht aufgestellt worden zu sein und der Druck aus dem französischen Mittelfeld wird aus genau diesem Grund zusammenbrechen.

Gruppe D

Spanien setzt sich mit einer relativ überzeugenden Leistung durch, auch wenn das Tor gegen Schweden erst kurz vor Schluss fiel. Der überragende spanische Angriff mit Fernando Torres und David Villa stellte selbst die defensiv sehr gut organisierten und strukturierten Schweden vor große Probleme. Ist die Mannschaft von Luis Aragonés ein Favorit auf den Titel? Eher nicht… Die linke Abwehrseite der Spanier offenbarte einige Mängel, die Schweden immer wieder nutzen konnte; bei präziseren Zuspielen wären hier weitaus mehr Tore gefallen.
Griechenland kann nach dem Spiel gegen Russland bereits die Koffer packen. Die Rehhagel-Elf konnte in zwei Spielen kein einziges Tor erzielen und damit ist das frühe Ausscheiden des amtierenden Europameisters eine relativ klare Sache.
Um den zweiten Platz in dieser Gruppe duellieren sich Schweden und Russland, die am kommenden Mittwoch die Klingen kreuzen. Während Hiddinks Russen einen Sieg brauchen, reicht für Schweden ein Unentschieden.
Mein Tipp: Der alternde Larsson und Ibrahimovic sorgen mit dem eingewechselten schnellen Johan Elmander für Wirbel in der russischen Abwehr. Ein knapper, aber verdienter Sieg für Schweden. Die russische Abschlussschwäche war ja schon im letzten Spiel gegen Griechenland offensichtlich.

This latest Euro 2008 post is one which I feel compelled to make following the end of the opening matches of the tournament. Group D’s opening games were played yesterday and as Spain wowed and delighted en route to a sparkling demolition of Russia, the later game between Sweden and Greece had a lot to live up to.

Now, not for a minute am I suggesting that the quality in this game should have been equal to David Villa’s fantastic hat-trick, but this is Europe’s elite tournament, so you would expect the games to be high on quality and contain excitement.

Already, we’ve had a candidate for the most boring game at a major finals as France and Romania battled out a dour 0-0 draw in Group C. But to eradicate that, we had the magnificent Holland and Italy clash, providing a high point of the tournament along with the performances of Spain, Portugal and Germany.

As artistic and full of individual brilliance that these teams are, the same cannot be said of the reigning European Champions Greece. They shocked the continent by winning Euro 2004 but did not endear themselves to neutrals in doing so.

The Greeks deployed a rigid defensive strategy, which invited teams to try and break them down and if they failed to do so, they would hit them on the counter attack. It worked for them in Portugal four years ago, frustrating teams into submission, most notably the hosts in the final, before emerging triumphant.

So I wasn’t exactly looking forward to a free flowing game between them and the colourful Swedes, who had Henrik Larsson back in the side. Before the match, I expected Lars Lagerback’s side to make the running and attack, while Otto Rehhagel’s would defend in numbers in an attempt to stifle the game.

I have nothing wrong with playing defensively per se. Defending is an important part of the game, and has as much skill involved as a Marco Van Basten screamer. Indeed, I have watched Scotland play a cautious game on many occasions, most notably against France at Hampden Park in the qualifiers- and we emerged victorious.

But, my friends, the Greek philosophy on football plumbed to such a depth that I turned the game off at half time in favour of a round of Mario Golf on my Nintendo Gamecube. Yep, that’s right, you did just read that- me, football nutter extraordinare, switched a game off in favour of playing a video games console.

I somehow had watched France and Romania in full, but this game was even worse. Sweden to their credit tried to make things happen, with Larsson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic busy up front, but failed to really penetrate a well marshalled Greek backline. But the holders, apart from a shot from Euro 2004 goal hero Angelos Charisteas, created nothing and indeed seemed to be happy with making no effort to attack.

There were 2 incidents towards the end of the opening period which caused my turn off. The first was the sight of the Greek back 3 playing keep ball between them for about a minute in their own half, with no intention of moving forward. Someone should’ve told them that this isn’t a passing exercise in training- this is match one of the European Championships, where a win will go a long way to securing qualification.

The second saw a Greek player (forgive me for forgetting who it was) booting the ball from around half way out of play down by the corner flag, almost like a rugby player kicking for touch to gain yardage. It was unbelievably infuriating to watch and the crowd made their displeasure known.

Not only was it poor that they were seemingly happy to do nothing in a constructive sense and try to hold on for a draw, they were cheating the millions watching across Europe, and most importantly their own fans, who have travelled to the tournament in large numbers to see their side play and hopefully progress.

I earlier made the point that I have watched Scotland play defensively, so you could accuse me of being hypocritical. However, I will counter that point with the fact that Scotland play to a much higher tempo and use their pacy, energetic midfield players and full backs to push forward when breaking forward to create chances of their own. Scotland play an exciting game, particularly at home- Greece I’m afraid do not.

I was only inclined to switch back on once I’d heard Ibrahimovic had shot Sweden into a second half lead with a fine goal, and the second, a real comedy scrap of a goal which you can enjoy here, was one I was pleased about. Pleased that a team who could be so negative at a major international tournament had their fate sealed by a woeful goal to lose from a defensive stance.

So Spain thrill, Greece turn off. Greece V Romania in the quarter finals? That’s a terrifying thought, but one which we needn’t worry about. The Greeks negative, boring style will not see them through. In my humble opinion, take Spain and Sweden’s attacking intent and ability to progress to the quarter finals.

As impressive as Holland’s performance against Italy was, it was mostly their superb defending and opportunistic counterattacking two or three times a half that made them the team to beat in this competition. They’ve now been overtaken by Spain, whose 4-1 win over Russia yesterday afternoon came from entire halves of scintillating attacking play that for sheer quality outshone the Dutch resourcefulness. Yes, Russia were poor, but they were made to look worse than they were by the partnership of David Villa and Fernando Torres, which lived up to all our lofty expectations. It does make you wonder why Torres was withdrawn ten minutes into the second half, though. (I told you Aragones was mad.)

We’ll probably have to wait until the quarter-finals to be sure if Spain are the real deal, as I don’t see Sweden or Greece giving their centre-backs the test they still need, particularly after having seen their stale game last night, which Sweden won 2-0. It was a very dull game, lit up briefly by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s great goal from the edge of the penalty area (still second to Sneijder, but a worthy runner-up), but no amount of fireworks could make the Greek ‘football’ interesting. It was defensive to the point of incomprehensibility – spending 3 full minutes passing it between the three centre-backs at 0-0 thirty minutes in? Do they really intend to draw all three games to make it through? Mind you, they did look very limited in attack, but Charisteas, Gekas and Samaras were given so little opportunity to attack the defence that you have to wonder whether Otto Rehhagel is orchestrating this for a bet.

Greece got exactly what they deserved, and it will be a very tall order for them to get out of this group now. They may well beat Russia in their next game, who looked out of ideas without Arshavin and Pogrebnyak, but Spain in the final game? Not a chance. Good riddance.

Today we’re back to Group A, with Portugal-Czech Republic and Turkey-Switzerland. I’ll have a guess at 2-0 and 1-1 respectively, but I don’t expect any classics. Here’s hoping.

Und nicht mal annähernd halbvoll. Und zum Glück war nichts an den Gerüchten dran (die in einigen Foren kursierten), die Otto Rehhagel nach Dolls ‘Rücktritt’ kurzzeitig mit dem BVB in Verbindung brachten. Das wäre wohl der totale Gegenpol zum Fußball à la Klopp geworden. Na ja, zumindest heute waren die Griechen erschreckend schwach gegen Schweden, die wohl auch nichts mit dem EM-Titel zu tun haben werden. Bei den Skandinaviern gab es den einen Geniestreich von Ibrahimovic, im Zusammenspiel mit Larsson, und ein eher kurioses Billardtor. Ansonsten war das der bisher wohl größte Langweiler der Euro (wobei ich die meisten Spiele ganz ordentlich fand).

Viel besser natürlich Spanien v Russland. Die Spanier starten mal wieder mit Vollgas in ein Turnier und machten Lust auf mehr. Ob sie’s diesmal länger durchhalten als sonst?

Otto Rehhagel, the German coach since 2001, and his team probably created the biggest upset in world football as 80 -1 outsiders showing what discipline, simplicity, organisation, stamina and self-belief can do against all odds. During Rehhagel’s reign, who will remain with the Greek side until 2010 for the World Cup, the national team moved up from 61st to 8th in the FIFA World Rankings. Whether Greece can repeat their success in Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria remains to be seen. A realistic target is to qualify for the second round. Group D, in which Greece participates, together with Sweden, Russia and Spain, is thought to be one of the toughest. With feet firmly on the ground, the Greek team goes into the tournament in good shape. The Greeks open against the Swedes tonight, and then face Russia and Spain, all in Salzburg. The Greek squad is expected to draw strong support from home and its large expatriate communities in neighbouring Germany. Since the first match is considered to be of crucial importance, millions of Greeks worldwide are expected to be glued to their TV sets to watch the game.
