I love New England because it offers one a variety of weather everythings. Thirty years wandering about these parts and I ‘ve grown to enjoy whatever I see when I look out the window happen I be inside. Yesterday was borderline raw, a slight chill calm reminder of winter, yet still a tolerable day for most. I never intend to take any photos. I’m fairly greedy and demanding of mother nature to offer what I know she can. I get pretty angry when she makes me wait. But when the time comes, it comes. Today was no different. Lunch time I grabbed food and stopped at a pond with no intent of doing anything but eating and reading……BUT…..I got bored.  And

well, I grabbed my camera.  And this is what came of it.

The  overcast acted as a filter. I’ve found it allows me to play more with natural light since surroundings are uniform and one is not fighting the sun. I tend to get deeper full tones. Yesterday was one of those days where within a half hour all the right factors fell into place via the Good Mother.

This was an awesome day.

A few weekends ago, the beagles and I decided to explore the Aiea Loop Trail. To get there take H1 west and exit the Halawa Stadium exit and continue on Ulune Street. The road veers right and then take a right on Aiea Heights Road. Follow Aiea Heights Road up until it ends at the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area. Continue driving up through the park veering right up to the upper parking lot. The trailhead is located in this area near the left side of restrooms and is clearly labeled “Aiea Loop Trail 4 ½ miles.”

The Aiea loop trail is a relatively flat trail that is suitable for hikers of all levels. The 4 ½ mile hike takes you around the graded ridge and at the highest points views of Pearl Harbor and H3 freeway. Because of its ease this trail is popular and can get crowded, especially on weekends. At slow to moderate pace the trail should take about 2 ½ to 3 hours.

The beagles and I are fast hikers and we did the trail in just about 2 hours. The day we went it happened to rain off and on, so luckily I brought my jacket with me. Because of the rain, this hike was surprisingly muddy in some low lying areas and the wet exposed tree roots made it slippery at times. I was impressed by the gorgeous views of the ocean, city, and H3 freeway. Just a tip, the hike doesn’t end up where you’ve started. The last 400 yards of the hike brings you up a slight hill that leads you to out of the trail into a picnic area. To get back to your car you have to walk up to the upper parking lot, which is approximately ¼ a mile away. For me this seemed to be the hardest part of the hike because of the uphill trek. This is a great, easy-going hike for beginners or for the more advance try jogging or running the trail. The 4 ¼ miles (plus ¼ mile walk on the road) is a good work-out either way. The beagles and I will definitely be back!

Salam Aidiladha.

Sebelum terlupa nak ucap Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha kepada semua umat-umat Islam di Malaysia. Berhati-hati memandu balik ke kampung. Kepada penumpang, tepuk atau jerit kalau korang sedar bila pemandu membuat apa saja aksi luar biasa. Saya biasa kena tegur dengan co-driver hehe.. Kadang-kadang khayal memandu kita tidak sedar kelajuan atau apa saja perkara lain sekeliling kita.

Tugasan seterusnya – minggu terakhir bulan aidilfitri yang lepas. Lengkap sebulan raya tanpa cuti hujung minggu huahuahua. Alhamdulillah rezeki..

Ini kali kedua dalam masa sebulan saya shoot pasangan tentera dan juga kedua kalinya berada di dewan yang sama iaitu Dewan Risda Jalan Ampang. Bukan itu saja lokasi outdoor juga sama. Bukan mudah mencari kelainan untuk setiap persamaan, dan Alhamdulillah dengan bantuan pengantin kami berjaya mendapatkan banyak shot-shot yang istimewa dari sebelumnya.

ふくれあがった荷物はついに20kg。ExosにIONを挟んだ変態パッキングで行ってきました関西遠征。

東京から車で10時間(！)ほど走り、初日は明神平へ。2時間ほどのハイクアップ。こんな岩っぽいところを登ります。

ぐいぐい攻めます。

午後からお天気もよさげになってきました。

大量の荷物でもExosだとわりと担げます。てくてく歩いてると上のほうに小屋が。

幕営します。

明神平いいところでした。視界も開けてて、適度に草が生えてて寝心地いいし。人も少ないし。アプローチは大変ですが。

料理開始。

かぼちゃをくりぬき種を掻き出してバターとホワイトソースを入れます。

今回の秘密兵器、アウトバックオーブンでじっくり焼き上げます。あつあつほくほく

切り分けます。とろとろじゅわー

おなじくアウトバックオーブンでかたまり肉をじっくり煮込んだビーフシチュー。やわらか肉でうまー

あと焼きリンゴも作ったのですが写真とりわすれ。

ウィスパーライトに萌え〜。着火したらすごい勢いで燃え上がりました。ほすぃ…

翌日、寝坊しましたけど下山します。

荷物積んで温泉入ってたこ焼き食べていざ大阪へ。

目指すはユーティリティへ。記念にちょこっとショッピング。

そして旅の本命(?)、Sky High Mountain Worksに乱入。ここでは大物をゲット。さらに荷物の重量を増やす…

中華街でもぐもぐ。夜の町に消え行く二人・・・

夜景も堪能。

そんなこんなしつつ、芦屋にもどって六甲をナイトハイクして幕営。

夜食にまたまたアウトバックオーブンで料理。茄子とチーズのオーブン焼き。こんがり焼いた生フィットチーネにパンチェッタを煮込んだトマトソースをかけたものが敷いてあります。

こんな場所でした。ヒルが出没したらしいけど僕は被害なく。

翌朝は岩場を目指します。ロックガーデンを抜けて、、、

いざキャッスルウォールへ！ドッギャーン！

しかし取り付き地点へのルートが分らず、とんでもないところへ。なんだここはー！

薮をかき分け進むと、え、これ？でもボルトもないし岩がぐずぐずで崩れ落ちてくるよ？

左右にわかれてトラバースできるか確認。左に巻けそうだったので行ってみる。

しかし行き詰まり、もう意味不明な急斜面を直登。

落石くらって右腕にあたるわ、足元の岩が崩れて3mほど滑落するわ、

巨大な荷物を持ってたのでこれじゃ登れないし降りるのも厳しい、ということでロープを出してギアも装着。

まずトップがのぼって、岩にスリングかけて支点を作り、ロープで荷物を引き上げて、フォロー二人を引っ張り上げ、つるべ式にトップを交代してまた登る。

ひとりはハーネス持ってなかったので、スリングで簡易ハーネスを作る。

おぉクライミングギア役に立った！

岩壁を登りきったところでまた薮にはまる。こんどはさらに奥深い・・・

やっとのことで、向こう側に本物のルートらしきものが見えてくる。クライマーも見える。あれかー！

薮を突っ切って、なんとかキャッスルウォールの頂部に達し懸垂下降で降りる。

この角度は未経験。ちょいビビる。

下降の途中でバックアップのプルージックが動かなくなり、途中停止してほどく。焦らず、ゆっくりと。

順番に降ります。

このあと一人ずつトップロープで遊んでタイムオーバー。

いきなり壁の頂部に出てきたので、リードをやらなくて済んだのが幸か不幸か…。

まぁとにかく自分たちだけでギアかついでクライミングに行く、という目的は達成。

帰りに寄り道してちょっとボルボル。

えぇそうです、このマットをSky Highで買いましたよ。巨大な荷物とはこれのことです・・・(汗

じつは本格的な無雪期の山行は今年がほぼはじめてで、今回の遠征はその集大成と言えるくらいの盛りだくさんなアクティビティを堪能しました。

去年は丹沢を2回ほど歩いただけでしたから、感無量。来年は何して遊ぼうかなー？

Crunch to host AHL’s first outdoor gameNovember 24, 2009

The Syracuse Crunch, along with Senator Charles E. Schumer and New York State, announced today that they will host the Mirabito Outdoor Classic, the American Hockey League’s first-ever outdoor game, on February 20, 2010, at the New York State Fairgrounds against the Binghamton Senators. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

“On behalf of our entire organization, we are excited about staging this tremendous event and are extremely appreciative to all those who have supported our efforts”, said Crunch President and CEO Howard Dolgon.

“This first ever outdoor AHL hockey game – which I hope will become an annual tradition – will bring the eyes of the sports world to Syracuse,” said Senator Charles E. Schumer. “It has the potential to bring in serious tourism revenue for Syracuse and be a financial shot in the arms in difficult times. I look forward to seeing the puck being dropped and watching the Crunch and the Senators battle it out on our fairgrounds. This will be a boon to hockey fans from Syracuse to Binghamton and beyond!”

Acho que todos concordam que retirar 51 outdoors não surge muito efeito. Und was sage ich dazu?
Im Grunde sagt dieser Text schon fast alles über das Kissen aus und sogar das Gewicht (inkl. Packsack) ist korrekt angegeben. Lediglich auf das Packmaß kommt man erst, wenn man das Kissen irgendwo zwischenquetscht. Bei normaler Lagerung im Beutel ist das Kissen je ca. 2cm größer. Aber geschenkt. Apropo Beutel: mich interessiert, warum dieser für das Kissen etwas zu groß ist. Klar, lieber etwas zu groß als zu klein, gerade in der Weite – super beim Einpacken. In der Länge hat er aber mal locker 5cm Übermaß. Störend? Nöö, das stört nicht. Wundern darf ich mich aber doch.

Tanka auf, Kissen rausgezogen, Ventil auf und schon hört man wie sich das Kissen voll Luft saugt. Praktischerweise geht das mit 15 Sekunden sehr schnell (je nachdem wie lange es komprimiert war) und in ausreichendem Maße. Ein Nachpusten ist, zumindest nach meinen Bedürfnissen, nicht mehr nötig. Das Ventil erscheint recht günstig, aber absolut ausreichend.
Nun liegt das Bone Shape vor einem. Macht schnell ein Foto, denn so schön wird es nicht bleiben. Nach den ersten Nächten blättert der schicke Kaikkialla Aufdruck ab und hinterlässt ein ganz blasses Negativ. Das Deko war wohl nur als Vorschlag gemeint. Schlimm ist auch das nicht, höchstens schade.
Alles andere als schlimm oder schade ist das angenehme Obermaterial des Kissens. Es fühlt sich zwar recht glatt an, ist aber angenehm auf der Haut und bleibt dies auch die Nacht über.

Der innere Aufbau ist etwas anders als bei einer selbstaufblasenden Isomatte. Während bei ihr der Schaumstoff im Inneren aus einem Stück besteht, wurde er für das Kissen quasi gehäckselt. Somit ist es nicht nur bequem, sondern isoliert nebenbei auch noch gut.

Zum Verpacken wird das Ventil einfach geöffnet, das Kissen zusammengerollt, das Ventil geschlossen und das Kissen in den Packsack geschoben. Das dauert keine 15 Sekunden.

Alternativen?
Auf dem Markt gibt es verschiedene vergleichbare Produkte. Sehr ähnlich ist das vorgestellte Bone Shape dem Mammut (Ajungilak) SoftSkin Pillow, welches aber mit 24,95€ 6€ mehr kostet als das Kaikkialla Kissen. Mit 19,95€ ist man mit dem Ajungilak Air Pillow dabei. Meins hat den ersten Urlaub nicht überlebt, die „Schweißnaht“ der Luftblase hat sich gelöst und fortan konnte ich es nur noch mit Pullifüllung nutzen. Da ich die Blase schon während des Urlaubs entsorgt hab, wollte mir Mammut keinen Ersatz zukommen lassen. Ärgerlich aber wohl verständlich.
Das Air Pillow ist zwar recht bequem, knarzt aber wenn man sich bewegt und das kann einen echt stören! Da die Handhabung auch nicht so schön wie bei den anderen beiden erwähnten Kissen ist, stellt es meines Erachtens keine Alternative dar. Zumal das Bone Shape auch noch billiger ist.
Gewichtige Konkurrenz gibt’s mit dem Pillow XL aus dem eigenen Haus. Vom Aufbau ist das XL mit dem Bone Shape identisch, nur sieht es nicht nach einem Knochen aus und ist wesentlich größer. Maße: 45 cm x 25 cm x 15 cm, Packmaß im Beutel: 28 cm x 9 cm – sagt der Globetrotterkatalog. Hier das Problem des XL: wer auf das Packmaß und Gewicht achten muss, wird sich das XL sicher nicht kaufen. Es wirkt wirklich riesig, während das Bone Shape immer noch eine Lücke in den Packtaschen findet.

Apropo Gewicht und Packmaß. Die meisten Unterwegsleute nehmen natürlich überhaupt kein Kissen mit. Ihnen langt der zusammengeknautschte Pulli unter ihrem Kopf. Ich habs probiert und war davon nicht begeistert. 150 weitere Gramm und ein Bisschen weniger Platz in den Taschen stören mich nicht im Geringsten – guter Schlaf ist mir unterwegs wichtiger. Das Shape Pillow ist und bleibt dabei.

Problematisch: meine Freundin findets auch toll und ist immer bestrebt es mir zu stibitzen.

Und mein Prädikat? Sehr empfehlenswert

Die “H560 Ultra Shock Proof” von PQI steckt was weg. Daher hat sie auch den Segen des US-Militärs erhalten. Die entscheiden sich aber kaum dafür, die bunten Versionen mit ins Feld zu nehmen.

I haven’t really put the skills learned at Glenmore Lodge in January to good use yet, that has to change this winter. I’m thinking of joining a club to make the most of the conditions this year and benefit from the safety in numbers or being part of a group. Cioch in Dunfermline is the obvious choice, I may head to their meeting this Thursday to check it out…
