Modern Seattle Style: Sustainability, Style and OMG – the Views!

Before getting to the point (the point being the spectacular new home in the fashionable Magnolia section of Seattle, WA), I must issue this disclaimer. Then architect and designer of this stylish abode is my brother. Possibly you think this means I cannot be objective but I posit that I can. After all if his sister can’t point out a man’s weak points, who can? But this house goes from strength to strength.

The magnificent views, the excellent use of natural light, clever use of space, both internally (the office space tucked in next to the kitchen is both accessible and out of the way) and externally (the design uses the sloped lot to dramatic effect, ensuring that the magnificent vistas from the living space are not interrupted by the neighbors’ houses) and building methods that go above and beyond the already “very green standards” the city of Seattle has in place. Even materials from the site’s previous building were incorporated – making the “carbon footprint” of this house much smaller than its size might otherwise have dictated.

It has been sustainably-designed – an increasingly important selling feature in many places but especially in a place like Seattle where “green” is a way of life and trees get more hugs than some people. The location is fantastic – Magnolia is a stunning neighborhood; Discovery Park is very nearby; easy access to downtown means easy access to the amazing music and food scene that is Seattle. Inside you find a library/media room not only pre-wired for sound but with a wet bar that practically demands you start entertaining right away; a light-filled open floor plan living/dining area with gourmet kitchen; the kitchen being fitted out with very high end appliances and Ceasarstone counters. I adore Ceasarstone counters. Harder than just about anything you can image, available in a breathtaking array of colors and finishes and so much easier to care for than marble. What was I say? Oh yes – the house.

Well, you can’t talk about this house without talking about the views – and the views from all sides will have friends gnashing their teeth with jealousy. Not least, the views from the master suite’s private outdoor living area – overlooking Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains. Lest the views not be enough to leave you swooning, the master suite also has a huge walk-in closet and extremely luxurious master bath.

If the views weren’t reason enough to love having all those windows – the way they make the absolute most of natural light would be the other.  An abundance of natural light is a real favorite feature of mine – as anyone who has seen my comments during #rightmovecrush can attest.

What about the view OF the house? Talk about curb appeal! So often, new build houses have that bare, unfinished feeling around the entrance. Like the builder forgot one last thing. Not this house. This has to be one of the most inviting entrances to a new build I’ve ever seen.  The landscaping in the back makes the most of the sloped site to give a cozy, non-overlooked spot for morning coffee or an after dinner drink. The open plan living space is designed to encourage use of these outdoor spaces as well.

The bottom line here is:  My brother has an superb eye and a creative approach to design and building. This is utterly unrelated to the fact that he is related to me.
