A SUPERB remake of a film by the same name. Danny Glover did a GREAT job as a man who wanted GOOD THINGS to happen SO much, that he accomplished the REALLY difficult. He got his own EXPLOSIVE temper under control AND gave two children looking for LOVE, a REAL life. ALONG the way, THE VIEWER learns there is a REASON for doing the BEST one can, as the help that one CAN get is NOT always “obvious” to NORMAL eyes. And BEFORE the film ends, the viewer is cautioned by the friendly, Chief Angel, who over-saw the HELP given THIS team, that “We are ALWAYS watching!” One SHOULD consider THIS FILM as FOOD for THOUGHT!

Angels in the Outfield Reviews

This effects-heavy, 1994 remake of the 1951 film starring Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn is all computer-generated pizzazz, with none of the charm or imagination of the original. Aimed squarely at children this time, the story focuses on a boy who gets some divine intervention on behalf of his favorite ball club. Christopher Lloyd plays the head angel, and Danny Glover is good as the team’s manager, but the real star of the film–for better or worse–is the software that makes a glowing, celestial presence on the field seem real. –Tom Keogh

Today during the winter meetings many Braves reporters commented and tweeted that the Braves will give Jason Heyward a real chance to make the team in April.

Cox: we’ll give Heyward a chance (link)

Cox reiterated that Heyward would get a chance to win a job in spring training, and went on and on about him being the total package and how they saw enough of him last spring and then during the season to know what he can do. (link)

Cox on Heyward and whether his talent and readiness makes it difficult to plan and know whether Braves need a stopgap until he’s ready, etc: “Well, we’ll see what happens. We’ll see. We’re not going to give anybody the job, but he’s going to be able to compete. If he wins it, he wins it.” (link)

Shanks during his Talk Show said before the Winter meetings, he thought Heyward had a 10% chance to make the team out of spring, now he says its a little over a 50% chance. (link)

Purpose: To develop arm strength and accuracy. This will help develop good outfielders, check these

Purpose: To develop arm strength and accuracy. This will help develop good outfielders, check these outfield softball fielding tips.

Procedure: Have one ball for each pair of players and gloves. Divide the team into pairs. Partners should be of similar age and skill level. Players stand facing each other approximately 30 feet apart. Increase the distance as the season progresses. Each pair has a softball. On the “go” command, one partner throws to the other, and when the coach yells “Go” a second time the partners throw the ball back. Players move back 5 to 10 steps after each pair of throws. Coaches should move up and down the line to make sure players are using correct throwing form, specifically the follow-through. When the players are 80 to 100 feet apart or more, encourage smaller players or those who are not as strong to get the ball to their partner on one bounce. A variation is for everyone to try to reach their partners on one bounce. Then try two bounces.

This drill is now recognized as one of the best methods for stren gth-ening a player’s throwing arm. Players should “crow hop” before throwing the ball, to gain extra power for the throw. The crow hop is a small hop that a fielder makes just before throwing, in order to gain momentum. Coaches should monitor this drill closely and ask if anyone’s arm hurts. Players with sore arms should stop the drill. When they’ve recovered, they can build up strength more gradually.

Variation: Players throw to their partners, as in the standard drill, but if a pair makes a bad throw, that team sits down. The drill continues until just one pair is left.

Before reporters could even ask Braves officials at the Winter Meetings how they planned to replace free-agent relievers Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez, the Braves already had done it by signing veterans Billy Wagner and Takashi Saito.

By moving so quickly to fill two anticipated needs — Soriano and Gonzalez aren’t gone yet and could shock the Braves by accepting arbitration — general manager Frank Wren said the Braves could now narrow their focus to offense.

As they prepare for the Winter Meetings that start Monday in Indianapolis, the Braves are considering perhaps a dozen hitters to fill one or two openings.

Free Agent Mike Cameron who is a LaGrange GA native, is getting up there in age (37 at start of 2010) but he still can be productive. Last year for the Brewers he hit .250/.342/.452 in 149 games. He hit 24 HRs and 32 Doubles in 09 so he can still be a power threat. Although he did not recieve a Gold Glove last year, he should have. He was one of the top fielders again in 09 and if the Braves were to sign him, he would play Center and move McLouth Left. The only downside of his is that he strikes out a lot, 152 SOs last year and 458 in the 3 previous years. The Braves would not have to give up a draft pick for him considering the Brewers did not offer him arbitration. Despite the high strikeouts, he is one of the best fits for the Braves. He could probably be signed for around 8 million for 2010 and maybe a vesting option for 2011.

An outfield of McLouth/Cameron/Heyward is certainly a upgrade over the start of 09.

Coming up with new ideas for drills for free little league baseball can sometimes be a challenge. He

Coming up with new ideas for drills for free little league baseball can sometimes be a challenge. Here’s a baseball drill from Steve

that is working well.

Monkey In The Middle

This helps my players, when throws come in from the outfield, to quickly relay the ball. Also helps on double plays.

Imagine a tic-tac-toe board. Place a person in each box with three balls, one given to each person on the end of the row. To start,

that person throws to the one (monkey) in the middle row. She then throws to the person on the other end. Then that person throws

back to the person in the middle and then throws to the person starting the sequence. Then the process is repeated.

This starts slow and speeds up as you go. What this helps develop is that the monkey in the middle turns towards the person throwing

the ball with their throwing arm side. This allows the ball to come into the gloved hand, across the body. This will allow the

throwing hand to be behind the ball ready to throw as oppose to catching the ball out in front of you, and having to then turn the

body towards the target.

The coach must watch and correct each player when they step toward the thrower with their gloved hand because they will!
