And while electrical outlets are wacky looking, those aren’t the kind of outlets I was talking

And while electrical outlets are wacky looking, those aren’t the kind of outlets I was talking about. I’m talking about shopping outlets, specifically Wrentham, but I’m sure that my astute observations apply to any outlets out there.

The other day the ladies and I drove the 45ish minutes out to the Wrentham Premium Outlets. The stores are normal every day stores, but its like a strange force takes over your body. When you park the car you expect it to be like any other day in the land of retail. But the second you open your car door, something changes. All of a sudden your price reality goes from normal to something resembling a compass in the Bermuda Triangle…wacky. Because you are at the outlets you think every purchase is a “steal.” The sweater that was originally $59.99 marked down to $39.99 but isn’t worth $15.99 on a good day, is all of a sudden the Holy Grail of your day. Now normally when you saw the same sweater on sale in the non-outlet store you wouldn’t even think of paying $39.99 and would consider the price highway robbery. But not today, no siree Bob, you are at the outlets and there is a $20 discount so it is a must add to your Christmas shopping list.

So here is my conspiracy theory (that I don’t believe but helps me justify my overspending), there is an invisible dome over the outlets that holds air with some kind of chemical that shuts off the part of your brain that controls spending urges and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy when you see a good discount on a tag. I’ll admit, I fell for it and I’ll fall for it over and OVER again. After all, the magical chemical made me wait in line at the Coach outlet, spend 45 minutes inside in sweltering heat listening to the incessant buzz of “isn’t this to die for?” in about 15 different languages…but I had a 20% coupon and I’ll be damned if I was going to let it go to waste!

So, by now, everyone should have tried to have made the first contact with a potential interviewee.

So, by now, everyone should have tried to have made the first contact with a potential interviewee.

Here is the fledgling skeletal frame-work for our presentation. Obviously, this is a first-ditch attempt, and I imagine that it will evolve pretty quickly from here. Doubtlessly, we will get rid of bits and add in new ideas as we do more research and get more involved in the project. But I believe that it’s very important for us to think thematically, even at this early stage.

A skeleton of ideas

So: What is the impact of social media on news gathering techniques and output?

1) The concept of news (output)

-News is now 24 hour, it’s available wherever you are (on your mobile/laptop). You can choose which news you look at, at any point (internet, iplayer radio shows).
So… News has moved away from being a top-down, rigid array of stories decided upon by “outletters”. Where it was once a single product made by two or three major agencies, it is now a MARKET of thousands of products. With a democratic element! (Digg.com, Web 2.0, etc.)

2) The integrity of news (output and gathering techniques)

The parameters of news have clearly been changed by social media. But by their inclusive nature, have social media diminished the reliability of news? I.e.: blogs, Twitter, and other forms of citizen journalism. Anybody can get a story out, but do people really treat that genre of news in the same way that they treat traditional forms, eg: BBC broadcasts, broadsheets, C4? Anyone can be a journalist these days, but does this put journalists out of a job? Or do we still look to established, respected and professional news outlets to guarantee us quality, accuracy and reliability? (And impartiality?)

3) Moral and legal restrictions (output)

If blogs don’t adhere to reporting restrictions, then does this make those very restrictions redundant? Eg: Guardian injunction collapsed by Twittering. Has news become more gory and crude? Does the unpoliceable internet mean an end for the ethical and legal frameworks established in print and broadcast to protect individuals and the audience?

Is there any way of policing the internet?

4) The job of a journalist (news gathering techniques)

Journalists have to work around the clock now…. Just like they used to in the olden days!! Facebook and other social networking sites give journalists a much quicker access to sources. Twitter means you can find a story as it happens. Does this quicken the pace of news? Do journalists now spend more time trawling the internet than actually going out and finding things the old fashioned physical way?

Trawling the net

That’s over and out from me. As I said, this is a bare skeleton, and we will need to flesh it out, if not reorganize the bones. It would be cool to have some feedback on this. Maybe we can simply use this as a springboard from which we can bounce ideas around.

Last fall, it was a white wool jacket. This time around, it was a light beige tote bag. Whether it’s clothing, accessories, or shoes, I gravitate towards most impractical, dirt-loving duds. Rather than resist, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s nearly impossible to say no when my item-to-be is selling for less than 50 of its original price.

Case in point: this buttery leather Coach bag. Regularly $379, I left the Woodburn outlets only $144 in the red. Practical? Hardly. But it reminds me why I started bargain hunting in the first place. Clearance sales allow me to splurge on fun, impractical goodies. Items that I may have shied away from at first glance, but that have come to define my personal sense of style.

Shops, Boutiques, Outlets and Supermarkets are a topic of universal appeal in the world of globalized consumerism. The retail system in the age of informatics is international, and the appeal that brand-new products exert on the global audience is massive and tantalizing. Shopping and consumption are not only one of the greatest drives for work and productivity; they are also source of funding for creative endeavours and communication challenges like advertising, movies and marketing.

References: flip, auctionhouse, fleamarket, listing, listings, onlineauctions, vendingmachines, vendingmachine, vending, vendors, vendor, fleamarkets, welder, privatelabel, antiqueshops, antiquestore, boutique, conceptstore, emporium, boutiquehotels,

Sales of consumer goods and news about shopping centers are the main topics of the group of domains we collected here.

This is the week every shopper waits for is here. Or maybe it’s the week you dread?

But Black Friday is here.

I don’t really have much to say because EVERY store has a sale going on. If you want the bargain of all bargains, go to some outlets near you. Sale items are on-sale. What’s better than that?

I suggest going to Queenstown Outlets or Hagerstown Outlets because they have great stores like BCBG, White House Black Market, Coach, Polo, anything. And it’s all on sale.

The best thing is that all of these stores have people inside that are more than willing to help you decide what is in style. ASK THEM if you think it’s a fashion fail, they’ll be honest.

Have SO much fun! BE CAUTIOUS OF CRAZY SHOPPERS!

“Black Friday as a term has been used in multiple contexts, going back to the nineteenth century, where it was associated with a financial crisis in 1869. The earliest uses of “Black Friday” to mean the day after Thanksgiving come from or reference Philadelphia and refer to the heavy traffic on that day. The earliest known reference to “Black Friday” (in this sense), found by Bonnie Taylor-Blake of the American Dialect Society, refers to Black Friday 1965 and makes the Philadelphia origin explicit:

JANUARY 1966 — “Black Friday” is the name which the Philadelphia Police Department has given to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day. It is not a term of endearment to them. “Black Friday” officially opens the Christmas shopping season in center city, and it usually brings massive traffic jams and over-crowded sidewalks as the downtown stores are mobbed from opening to closing.[11]

The term Black Friday began to get wider exposure around 1975, as shown by two newspaper articles from November 29, 1975, both datelined Philadelphia. The first reference is in an article entitled “Army vs. Navy: A Dimming Splendor,” in The New York Times:

Philadelphia police and bus drivers call it “Black Friday” – that day each year between Thanksgiving Day and the Army–Navy Game. It is the busiest shopping and traffic day of the year in the Bicentennial City as the Christmas list is checked off and the Eastern college football season nears conclusion.

The derivation is also clear in an Associated Press article entitled “Folks on Buying Spree Despite Down Economy,” which ran in the Titusville Herald on the same day:

Store aisles were jammed. Escalators were nonstop people. It was the first day of the Christmas shopping season and despite the economy, folks here went on a buying spree. … “That’s why the bus drivers and cab drivers call today ‘Black Friday,’” a sales manager at Gimbels said as she watched a traffic cop trying to control a crowd of jaywalkers. “They think in terms of headaches it gives them.”

Usage of the term has become more popular in the Midwest since 2000

More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red (i.e., posting a loss on the books) to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).”

~As Defined by Wikipedia

Ok, so it’s been over a week since my last post – SORRY! Forget the camera for the Raleigh trip, but we didn’t really see much anyways, so no big deal.

It’s Thanksgiving on Thursday. Let me say that again. It’s Thanksgiving. On Thursday. WHERE has the month of November gone???? It feels like just last week I started work! It’s amazing how much time a regular job sucks out of your life.

JB is already making plans for Black Friday shopping. He is quite excited as there are several different game plans he can attempt. I think the most intriguing (and most difficult) will be what I’m referring to as “The Triathlon.” The Triathlon has three stages: Dinner with another couple in town on Thanksgiving (kind of a pot luck thanksgiving – more to come on that), a serious sleep fest, then down to the Myrtle Beach Outlet stores open at Midnight on Black Friday (this is about an hour away for us), after which we will drive back home in time hit the circuit of stores at home, with a grand finale finish around 8 or 9am on Friday. This is the point where I will most likely have JB tack a blanket over the windows so that I may sleep in my cave in peace until I recover being awake for almost 24 hours. Knowing JB, he’ll probably be so worked up from the sales, that he may start trolling around town for more deals. Normally, you couldn’t PAY me enough money to take part in BF shopping, but since we’re here by our lonesome, there is no one else to go with him.

The things I do for love

This Saturday I will be headed to the outlets at Birch Run with some friends. I am super excited to hang out with the girls and get some good deals! To get ready for a shopping extravaganza, I am prepared with my shopping list (complete with some bday and Christmas gifts) and special offers. No more stops at the service desk for my coupon book! I am prepared well in advance with my printed coupons. Plus, going with friends will help me save even more – we can pool our purchases together to meet minimum levels for discounts.

I am especially excited to go to the Pottery Barn Outlet. Last time I was there I got some GREAT deals including a $5 rug for our front door that matched our existing living room rug – yup, just $5! I will also be on the lookout for some crib bedding for my friend Robin, some frames for pics from our England trip, and items for our newly renovated bathroom.

Hope to have some good deals to share with you on Sunday!

We went to the outlets and shopped at Underarmour, Adidas, Nike, AE, Bath and Body Works, Victoria’s Secret, Ann Taylor, Coach, and BCBG…my fave! It was sooooo crowded, almost like Black Friday. Rediculous! But there were great sales, and I got lots of cute clothes We left Williamsburg around 5:45pm and started going home, and I drove sllllowly in order to not get home before 7! She didn’t suspect a thing, and I even think she bought my response when she asked “what all the cars were doing in my neighbor’s yard?” I just said they were having a party, and proceeded to talk about our shopping trip. We walked into the house and everyone was surrounding the doorway and yelled “surprise!” at exactly the right time. It was so so so perfect! It’s a great place to shop especially during sales. The place is also beautiful, reminiscent of a beautiful town in Southern California. I don’t feel like I’m in Nippon each time I go to outlets

I went to see Niqman when he was working in Saga and he drove me to Tosu Premium Outlets. That was the last time I visited this place. I miss this place so much, it is a must-go place in Kyushu.

I don’t know if I ever mentioned this, but half of this blog is from California. I was born and raised in Southern California (NO ONE there says SOCAL so PLEASE stop it!) and I moved out east when I was 18. The East Coast was definitely… different. Culture, weather, food, religion, you name it, it was a SHOCK to me. But I also fell in love with it all. I hadn’t been back to California for nearly THREE years! This past Halloween, a few friends and I decided to go to California to visit my momma and to check out the California OUTLETS. I don’t know if I ever mentioned this, BUT OUTLETS IN CALIFORNIA ARE NO JOKE! We went to the Desert Hills Premium Outlets and the Cabazon Outlets in Palm Springs. It was a full day affair! Want to see what I got?

T purchased:

2 pairs of Jack Purcells, $17.50/each

I have many many pairs of Chuck Taylors, but no Jack Purells! So to make up for the lack, I purchased 2 pairs! I asked my mom which color she liked more, but she saw that it was 2 for $35 (1 for $19.99) and she said – GET BOTH! So I obeyed my mother.

Ann Taylor Skirt, $29.99

It’s often difficult to find skirts for work, but Ann Taylor skirts somehow fit my body perfectly. (Is it bad that I’m always a bit sheepish when admitting that I’m wearing Ann Taylor?) I found a similar skirt to the one above, and it looks fantastic on my bum! It’s a bit steep for $39.99, but we had a coupon for 25% off and we put it to good use!

Calvin Klein Pants, $35.99

Calvin Klein had some cute pants that I can wear to work and then for happy hour. $40 is a bit steep, but I rarely find cute pants that I feel comfortable in AND is bar-friendly. Ok, for the record, those shoes are ugly. And the pants are cuter than how they look on the model. Since I’m pretty short, the pants don’t cut off at such an awkward length. Yeesh I totally felt like I had to defend myself because the picture does not do the $40 pants justice!!!

My butt does NOT look that good in those pants!

But her butt really does look good in this picture. My butt doesn’t look like that so please don’t judge me too harshly when you see me wearing these pants.

We also bought a ton of dresses, but I’ll tell you all about that later!

Button me up

How do you avoid being a figure swept away by colour and imagination with little cash to spend? Better still, how do you avoid clothing yourself ‘inappropriately’? Tough questions -yet easily conquered. Not every teenage girl has the cash flow of a princess so in tough times you need to learn to make do.

Listed are five easy ideas that will have you strutting your stuff downtown in no time.

Attribution 2.0 Generic. http://www.flickr.com/photos/37146646@N00/372545347. Check out the Sales Racks.

Button #1 – Hello stranger and welcome to the world of “Op” shops, for example “Savers”. They are scattered all around the joint. Check some out in your local guides, phone books and the Internet. Also, use your networking skills to ensure you source the base of bargains.

Now be warned – not everything in these places will be your preferred “style”. However, don’t be afraid to try new stuff out…Just think, you can pick up tops and frocks for less than $10 each.

Button #2 – Now, if you are having a few issues with the whole “name brand” thing – do not fear. Try and hang out until you discover a cool sale…How do you discover these tricks of the trade?

Simply subscribe to your favorite brand’s website or a sales website such as www.missyconfidential.com.au. These sites alert you to the sales or stores which are having major reductions or have sassy samples on sale. Hopefully you are lucky enough to end up at a sale scoring some of the hottest clothes which have yet been in store!

Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.0 Generic. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalbera/2385441551/. Add this gorgeous broche to any outfit.

Button #3 – This one is for all those creative chicks out there…Make your own clothes! Now, I am not implying that you go and purchase a lavish sewing machine to create a spectacular jumper or mystically create a pair of jeans from 1cm of material.

I am simply saying, by adding little trinkets to plain items of clothing could be the way to go. You can jazz it up anyway you want and at the same time keep track of your available funds! Adding a cute broche to a cardigan or creatively tying a knot in a cute scarf usually does the trick.

Button #4 – “Buy one get one free”. If you are a true fashion guru then you will love that phrase…However, only if you are a clever girl will you take advantage of that offer.

Need some extra tee’s or singlet tops? Picking up two for the price of one is a very sweet deal my friends!

Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.0 Generic. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sicco/870167434/. Look out for the Sale Signs.

Button #5 – Factory outlets or end of season clearance sales are also very playful places to pick up items you may not find in stores at all. Check them out in your various states and you will be surprised at the savings you make.

Stalking websites such as www.salesguide.com.au and following links hinting ‘Designer Sample & End-Of-Season Clearance Sales’ is your highway to heaven.

There you have it – five simple ways to ensure you always have a penny left in the piggy bank but are always looking pretty as a princess!
