Outlook Express.

The simple answer is “There isn’t one”. XP had ‘Outlook express’, Vista had ‘Windows Mail client’ and now Microsoft have decided that their latest OS can do without. I’m not quite sure why Microsoft would decide that the ability to email people isn’t a core requirement in a modern operating system but with their ongoing anti-trust issues I wouldn’t be surprised if they just wanted to avoid more legal headaches.

That said, Microsoft haven’t left us totally in the lurch and they do provide an email client (Windows Live Mail) as part of the ‘Windows Live Essentials’ suite. This is available as a free download and also includes :

Windows Live call

Windows Live messenger

Windows Live Movie Maker

Windows Live Photo Gallery

Windows Live Writer

You can find this download by going to the Start Menu and typing essentials in the search field. It will then give you the option ‘Go online to get Windows Live Essentials’.

Just follow the instructions and select the items you would like to download an install.

When you launch the program you will be asked for your email account credentials. Once these have been entered just sit back and watch Live Mail go off and retrieve all your email.

So in summary, it’s slightly odd that Microsoft wouldn’t include it in the OS but at least they have made the solution simple and painless.

1- O computador de alguém (não o seu) é infectado por um vírus;
2- No computador desse seu querido amigo tem seu endereço no catálogo de endereços do programa de e-mail;
3- O vírus manda mensagens para cada pessoa da lista com intuito de se propagar ou outro qualquer;
4- O vírus manda a mensagem para as pessoas utilizando nome de outras pessoas do catálogo de endereços, não necessariamente chegará com o nome de um amigo seu;

» Utilize um excelente programinha como o MailWasher para limpar sua caixa antes de baixar;
» Nunca encaminhe mensagens a um grupo de pessoas usando Cópia Carbono (CC), utilize o Cópia Carbono Oculta (BCC), assim não há risco de alguém “doar” sem querer a lista a algum spammer;
» Nunca adicione o e-mail de algum amigo seu em sites promocionais, listas de e-mail e pergunte-o antes qual e-mail dele deve cadastrar em qualquer site que vá enviar algo para ele, ex: cartão virtual, lembretes de aniversário, convite para participar de comunidades, indicação de sites, etc;

I installed it over 9 months ago and never had any problems with it. Great for multiple email accounts. The only “issue” I ever had was that “subject” line in read messages is not that visible (light gray colored text on white background) but pretty soon I got used to it.

You’re not falling for this email, are you? I have received at least six copies of this bogus

You’re not falling for this email, are you?

I have received at least six copies of this bogus email message so far today.

The email message claims to be a Microsoft announcement notifying you of a new update to the Outlook or Outlook Express email programs. Prominent in the message is a link you’re suppose to click on to download the patch from Microsoft.

The link displays as “http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftofficeupdate/KB910737/default.aspx?ln=en-us&email=galen@xxxxxx.com&id=950469769888131599309836639492603233….7986“. It sure looks like that if you click on the link you’ll be going to Microsoft for a download.

Don’t do it! The link is a phony!

How do I know?

First, Microsoft doesn’t send emails announcing updates. Their Windows Update program runs and, depending upon your preferences, installs updates or tells you do get them when you have time.

Second, when I read the email and place my cursor over the link, a pop-up tool tip appears showing the real location I’d be taken to. The real location doesn’t end with “microsoft.com”. The real location in the latest email I received ends with “ij1tli.com”. That domain is registered to:
Personal use
3-59-10 Izumi, Suginami-ku
Tokyo, Tokyo 1680063
JP

You could track this domain further, but all we really care about is that it’s not Microsoft!

If you click on the phony link to download the “patch”, you’ll download something. But, it won’t be a patch to your email problem. Instead it will be an evil program. One that maybe tracks your keystrokes when you log into your bank account and then sends your banking username and password to thieves. Or, a program that runs malicious software on your PC that will attack a website or send millions of spam messages.

Don’t fall for this attempt to fake you out. Just delete the emails… and make sure that your anti-virus software is up-to-date!

This week, through an article in DMNews titled “Inside the inbox: What are your customers really see

This week, through an article in DMNews titled “Inside the inbox: What are your customers really seeing?,” we revealed some preliminary results from a study we’re conducting with thousands of email users.

One of the areas we covered was the use of preview panes, which has always been a blind spot for email marketers. Yet it’s important to understand since it dramatically impacts the user’s email experience (do they see the message in a full window or just a snippet along the top or side?).

There are two ways to quantify use of preview panes – by % of users that utilize them or by % of messages read that way. The numbers in the DMNews article are based on % of messages read in the preview pane for each email client. It’s useful (and maybe more important) to understand the % of users that utilize the feature. So, here’s a side-by-side comparison of the two –

Outlook Express

78%

71%

Windows Live Hotmail

Yahoo! Mail

0%

0%

Note that Earthlink, Gmail and Yahoo! Mail Classic do not support a preview pane.

While some of the email clients (AOL, Yahoo! Mail) have similar preview ratios for both users and messages, note the moderate difference (1.1X) for Outlook and Outlook Express users and the huge difference (2.5X) for Windows Live Hotmail users. There is a common thread – for all clients, the % of users who read messages in the preview pane is higher than the % of messages read that way.

What’s the takeaway? Don’t waste effort and potential impact by ignoring one of the primary ways consumers interact with email – designing for digestion in the preview pane is critical.

So I needed a new modem. Go figure! My DSL provider only took a couple of days to come to my rescue and then my connection was up and running again like new.

You’d think that would have been it.

But nope – I’ve been having issues with my computer ever since. After cleaning the drives, defragging them, running a full system virus scan, running a spyware system scan and checking every possible area for problems, I’m convinced that Outlook Express has been the culprit.

For the past three days, I’ve been reading and responding to all my email accounts online, rather than downloading them to Outlook, and voila – no freezing.

I’m still going to get someone to look at my lifeline to the internet and see what can be done, but I’m just glad I’m finally able to get online and stay there.

How do you all handle your internet issues and interruptions?

Google’s email service GMAIL seems to have stumbled again within weeks. As reported earlier, this time it happened on Thursday, September 24, a little more than three weeks after Google’s email product went down for hours – stranding businesses individuals who rely on its service.

Experts said this outage once again brought to fourth the unreliable nature of cloud computing. This is especially scary for corporate accounts which are starting to reply more and more on cloud computing for their core business needs. One wonders in such cases, if we are really ready for the cloud yet ?

Thursday’s problems began when users stopped being able to access their contacts, blocking them from their contact manager, the chat application and auto – filling of email addresses.

Gmail was unavailable on some mobile browsers, and some folders would not open. Those who bypass Gmail’s web interface by using IMAP protocol to sync with external mail clients such as Outlook were unaffected (this was the case earlier).

Start Outlook Express.

Click Tools, and then click Options.

On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.

Press CTRL+C to copy the location. 5. Click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the dialog box.

Step B: Copy the contents of the Store folder

On the Edit menu, click Select All.

On the Edit menu, click Copy, and then close the window.

Step C: Create a backup folder

Right-click any empty area on your desktop, click New, and then click Folder.

Step D: Paste the contents of the Store folder into the backup folder

Double-click the Mail Backup folder to open it.

Right-click inside the Mail Backup folder window, and then click Paste.

Step 2: Export the Address Book to a .csv file

Important Make sure that you follow this step if you use multiple identities in Outlook Express.

Microsoft Outlook Express 5.x and Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 use a Windows Address Book (.wab) file to store Address Book data. The individual data for each identity is stored in a folder by user name within the .wab file that is used.

The only way to separate the Address Book data for different identities is to export the data to a .csv file while you are logged in as a specific identity. If the .wab file becomes dissociated from the user identities, the data can be exported only as one total. In this case, the data cannot be exported folder by folder.

There is another reason to export the .wab file to a .csv file. If the .wab file not exported to a .csv file, but the .wab file is shared with Microsoft Outlook, the addresses are stored in the personal folders (.pst) file in Outlook. When you export the file to a .csv file by using the File menu in Outlook Express, the correct contacts are exported. However, if the Address Book is shared with Outlook, you cannot use the File menu option to export from the Address Book. This option is unavailable.

To export the Address Book to a .csv file, follow these steps:

On the File menu, click Export, and then click Address Book.

Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.

Click Browse.

Select the Mail Backup folder that you created.

In the File Name box, type address book backup, and then click Save.

Click Next.

Click to select the check boxes for the fields that you want to export, and then click Finish.

Click OK, and then click Close.

Step 3: Export the mail account to a file

On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

On the Mail tab, click the mail account that you want to export, and then click Export.

In the Save In box, select the Mail Backup folder, and then click Save.

Repeat these steps for each mail account that you want to export.

Click Close.

Step 4: Export the newsgroup account to a file

On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

On the News tab, click the news account that you want to export, and then click Export.

In the Save In box, select the Mail Backup folder, and then click Save.

Repeat these steps for each news account that you want to export.

Click Close.

How to restore Outlook Express items

Note To restore items when you use multiple identities in Outlook Express, you may have to re-create the identities before you follow these steps. Repeat each step as needed for each identity.

Step 1: Import messages from the backup folder

On the File menu, point to Import, and then click Messages.

In the Select an e-mail program to import from box, click Microsoft Outlook Express 5 or Microsoft Outlook Express 6, and then click Next.

For a few years now I have had my Hotmail email account linked to my Outlook client. Like many people out there I use Microsoft Outlook 2007 and this has worked perfectly for some time, and my email has downloaded automatically when opening the program. If I am waiting for an email, a simple ’send/receive’ will pull my new mail down without any issues.

All this changed recently and without warning, one day my mails were being downloaded and the next day Outlook could not access the Hotmail servers.

Folder: Inbox Synchronizing headers: reported error (0×800CCC33) : ‘Access to the account was denied. Verify that your username and password are correct. The server responded ‘Forbidden’.’

The good news is that after a bit of googling I came across a forum with lots of people having the same issue. Luckily someone had done abit more digging and had found an explanation :

In June 2009, Microsoft announced a change to the way Outlook, Outlook Express, and Entourage programs access Hotmail which may require customers to take action.
To continue to receive e-mail from your Hotmail account, please select one of the alternative solutions …... Full details here

As I have Outlook 2007 the solution involved downloading and installing ‘Office Outlook connector‘. This was a simple install and a quick restart of Outlook had my email downloading within no time.

A suprisingly painless fix from Microsoft but I have to agree with the people in the forums that an automatic prompt to install the connector and a less cryptic message from ‘Send/Receive’ would have been preferable.

Editor

Steve Cooper is founder of Tech University of America (TechUofA) and a former Army education trainer. The following interview was conducted via email from September 8 to 12.

JS: How did you come up with the idea of offering college courses for a flat monthly fee (e.g., $99 for all the classes a student wants to take) and how long have you been doing this?

SC: All of the courses that we are developing will be free and open to everyone. However, only when students want to begin a transcript and earn an academic certificate or degree is there a $99/month that allows them to take ten courses per year. We only use free etextbooks/resources so there aren’t any other major fees associated with earning a degree.

While building several online university programs I watched as they artificially raised tuition to the student loan cap. I was one of the few for-profit CEOs who didn’t have an MBA or wasn’t a banker so I looked at things much differently. In 2007 when I took over as CEO of a for-profit university, I decided to lower tuition in order to make higher education accessible to more people. We immediately began to enroll students from Africa and several other countries. I found that if you have the same quality of faculty as other well established schools and run a transparent program then people will attend your school if you lower your tuition. At the same time I started to see the popularity of social networking sites explode while the economy started to weaken. I then realized that three things were hot: social networking sites, online learning, and lower or zero-tuition.

Early in 2008, I used to drive over to University of Phoenix Online and sit in the parking lot in search of inspiration. I would sit there for hours watching the sunset, hoping to soak up some of their creative energies, while asking myself, “What would Dr. John Sperling, the founder of University of Phoenix, do today if he were to do it all over again?” I concluded that the first thing he would do is take education to the masses as he did years ago by bringing education from the ivory tower to the community in office buildings then eventually via distance learning. I think one of his greatest keys to success was leveraging existing resources rather than trying to force people to change. For example, he didn’t try to make the corporate offices where they held classes look “academic” nor did he develop some goofy learning management system to deliver their distance learning courses. Rather, they used the existing business offices and Outlook Express. People were familiar with regular office buildings (not intimidating like a college campus) and it was convenient. Also, most adults have used Outlook or Outlook Express so they lessened the learning curve by using systems students would be familiar with — and if they weren’t, chances were that someone they knew could help them — as opposed to building some esoteric and irrelevant elearning system that wasn’t intuitive to adult learners.

So, I eventually thought that if Dr. Sperling were to start over he would bring higher education to the masses. However, today the masses are in social networking sites. At this point I still had not seen a social networking site but realized that if they were generating that much buzz there had to be a reason. I logged into one and instantly said to myself that this is the ideal online classroom! A week later I directed one of my staff members to teach a course in a social networking site, PerfSpot.com, since I knew their leadership and found them to be dedicated to a global reach — and it was absolutely amazing! Social networking sites allow the faculty and students to control their online learning environment (end-user innovation) and can do all the things that conventional learning management systems can’t or won’t allow such as video, audio, showing photos of the users, widgets, etc.

Moreover, using social networking sites to deliver college courses greatly reduces our cost of delivering education since we pay neither learning management fees, which can be as high as $120 per student per course, nor technical staff for support. In essence, it’s a win-win-win because the social networking sites benefit from having more users (our students), we as a college gain by not having any learning management fees, and our faculty and students win because they get to control their learning environment.

JS: Are TechUofA courses accredited? If yes, by whom? If not, is lack of accreditation a problem?

SC: No. Tech University of America is not accredited. We must be operating for two years before we are eligible to apply for accreditation, and we intend to apply as soon as we are eligible in 2011. Since we are a start-up school we have a lot of R&D, yet, at the same time, we are a business so we have to actively seek ways to grow our student body. In order to better serve new schools as well as their prospective students, I believe that accrediting bodies should have a provision that allows for new schools to be conditionally accredited before they start offering courses and then heavily monitor them until they are accredited. In the meantime, we have to operate for two years prior to seeking accreditation, which does offer us time to improve our academic processes while fine tuning the operations of our university.

JS: Are TechUofA classes completely online? Or are students required to participate in F2F (face-to-face) activities at some point during a course? If not, is this lack of F2F contact a problem?

SC: All of our courses and programs are delivered 100% online, and we do not plan on any residency requirements. Recent studies have shown that online learners can attain the same, if not higher, learning outcomes than their F2F counterparts. Having said that, I do think that F2F interaction is obviously valuable. To this end we are exploring several ways that we can integrate various optional study programs that will bring some of our students who live around the world together for meaningful experiential and F2F learning.

______________________________

Steve Cooper: While I fully agree with Chris Anderson, author of Free: The Future of a Radical Price . . . that anything that becomes digital inevitably becomes free, I do think that we will see a hierarchy emerge within online learning: we will have free or very low priced schools, then more expensive programs, and finally exclusive online programs for the very wealthy . . . .

______________________________

JS: Is it possible for a student to complete a degree or certificate at TechUofA? Would this be a TechUofA degree or a degree offered by a college that relies on TechUofA courses?

SC: We will be offering certificate programs as well as associate, bachelor, and master degree programs in business management with several concentrations in fields such as criminal justice, sustainability, construction management, computer science, and sports management. However, we are beginning to partner with several colleges that are interested in using our courses — in these cases students who are enrolled in a partner school and complete our courses would receive credit/degrees from their school, not Tech University of America. In this case we will serve as a blackboard, if you will, with our courses hosted in Facebook, and partner schools will use them at their discretion.

JS: What is the instructor-to-student ratio for your classes? If the ratio is far greater than for F2F classes, how do TechUofA instructors manage the large number of students?

SC: Our student-to-faculty ratio is 1:20 for most courses, and 1:25 for the rest, which is about the average for most online schools, and considerably less than large research universities where ratios of 1:500 are not uncommon.

JS: If students enter a course at any time and exit at any time, I’d imagine that record keeping may be a major problem. Does the instructor monitor all of her/his students? Or is this managed by someone else?

SC: Non-degree seeking students, those who are just using the course materials, may come and go as they please. For our degree-seeking students we have definite start and end dates for each course, and each course is eight weeks in length. Since our courses have less than 25 students, our faculty are able to manage each course.

JS: Are TechUofA instructor salaries comparable to that of F2F institutions? Do you have full- and part-time instructors?

SC: We engage adjunct faculty members to teach our courses. They must have a graduate degree from an accredited school, with practical work experience in their field of study. We also require that our faculty have teaching experience at a regionally accredited school. This allows us to demonstrate that the quality of our faculty is comparable to that of accredited schools.

We use a variable pay model, with each faculty member earning $50-$75 per student. This incentivizes faculty to teach more students per course and is fair because the more they work, the more they earn. At the same time it helps us contain our costs since we are not paying faculty $2,000 when there are only four students in a course. The fact that we do not cap the amount faculty can earn means that they can do quite well. Also, our model encourages faculty to use their own videos in YouTube, social networking sites, etc., which can increase the likelihood that they will be able to secure a textbook contract because faculty who can demonstrate a substantial following these days are highly sought after by publishers. Finally, given that we charge $99 per month, you can see that 50-75% of our revenues go to faculty pay as they are the most critical part of our team.

JS: Does TechUofA rely on staff from countries where salaries and wages are much lower? If yes, is there a problem in quality?

SC: No. However, as we grow our international student body, we will explore hiring staff who reside in countries where we have a large student base so that our staff can relate well to our students, thus serving them better than we can here in Phoenix, Arizona. I must add that I personally am not convinced that outsourcing labor to other countries always saves a considerable amount of money, especially when you consider the inevitable travel, loss of business from language barriers, rising costs associated with outsourcing, etc.

JS: Is TechUofA international? In other words, do students come from many different nations? In U.S. TechUofA classes, are international students charged a higher fee?

SC: We are proud that we have had many inquiries from international students, and in our model everyone pays the same fees. However, we are working on raising money so that we can offer scholarships to people in developing countries so they do not have pay anything to earn a degree from Tech University of America. Also, we are working on building a networking system that allows more fortunate students to sponsor (pay for tuition) for students who cannot afford the $99 a month to earn a degree. We believe this will lead to several meaningful relationships between our students.

JS: Are services such as TechUofA growing in numbers and popularity? Do you foresee a time when the TechUofA way of providing classes will be the dominant means of earning a diploma, degree, or certificate? Will this be at the K-12 or college level? Or both?

SC: Absolutely. Click here for the best overview of this movement which refers to us as EduPunks. Yes, I do see a day when the Tech University of America model will be the prevailing way of providing online courses, and by this I mean using social networking sites as the learning management system rather than Blackboard, using free etextbooks rather than traditional textbooks, etc., but I do not think all schools will have all their courses offered for free and only charge $99 a month for degree seeking students. While I fully agree with Chris Anderson, author of Free: The Future of a Radical Price, and his assertion that anything that becomes digital inevitably becomes free, I do think that we will see a hierarchy emerge within online learning: we will have free or very low priced schools, then more expensive programs, and finally exclusive online programs for the very wealthy that are as expensive as, if not moreso, than Harvard. At the same time I predict that we will only have 50 state schools – one for each state – that has football teams, fraternities, etc., and the rest of the students will attend private, for profit schools, either onground or online, especially given the rise of online high schools. I have been told there are more than one million online high schools students in America.

JS: Is student cheating a problem in TechUofA classes? If not, how is it handled?

SC: Student cheating, plagiarism, program integrity and student authentication are all serious challenges for all schools. The Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008 requires that a school that offers online courses have procedures in place to ensure that that students who enroll in a course are the same students who take the course and ultimately receive credits. While the HEOA doesn’t apply to us since we will not utilize Title IV funds (federal student loans), we are fully committed to ensuring program integrity. In addition to having a required assignment on personal accountability and plagiarism in our introductory course, have engaged CSIdentity’s Voice Verified product to ensure that the student who enrolls in Tech University of America is the same student who is in a particular course, completes course assisgnments, and ultimately receives academic credit. This is done by randomly verifying the biometrics of their voice throughout their entire course of studies, and the Voice Verified solution is more accurate than a fingerprint.

JS: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

SC: Sure, I think it is important to point out that Facebook, which is central to our model at Tech University of Ameirca, was created by students, for students, and it is fitting that Facebook is finally becoming the leading learning management system. I predict that within 2-5 years, Facebook will buy Blackboard and move all of its users into Facebook..

Yeah, yeah I’ve known for a while that IE and Outlook Express are about the worst programs to use for surfing the web and reading e-mail. I have resisted using anything else, because I haven’t found anything that worked as easy. My spouse is somewhat ‘technologically challenged’ and I need a browser that is easy for her to use and work with. A good friend of mine pointed out that the newest version of FireFox is very IE like, so I downloaded it and am putting it through my own trials before I put it on the other-half’s computer. Figured I would also try-out Thunderbird, Mozilla’s email/newsgroup program. Like it too, plus I checked, these 2 programs use less than a third of the computer resources as Microsoft’s programs. I’m not going to completely get rid of IE and OE, but I don’t think I will be using them like I was and will be using Mozilla’s programs. I can already hear several friends saying “B.F.T.” Once I figure out just what tweeks and adjustments need to be made, I can get it installed on our other computers.

A quiet day today. R*** had a lie-in until 07:30 which was nice. No jobs to do today, except making the dinner. I pegged out a few more strawberry plants. That will make about 8 new plants all together. I don’t really know how we will over winter them. I think, I’ll leave them out doors until it starts to get frosty, and maybe put them in the shed, with some fleece over them. I don’t think they will keep very well in my little greenhouse.

S**** was online with Mrs H tonight. He doesn’t seem to be that well. His back is getting so bad, that he says he is having difficulty walking!! Mind you, it does not seem to stop him spending all night watching DVDs. He says he was up all last night, until 10:00am this morning, watching ‘24’. Now that surely cannot help !!

It seems funny seeing Mrs H on messenger. I’ve also got her checking her email. Now that I’ve got Outlook, I’ve moved my accounts from Outlook Express, so that there is only her account on there. What with that, and her searching online and Googling, there will be no stopping her.

All my bluetooth kit seem to be working okay now (hurriedly looks for wood to touch.) I had to uninstall the bluetooth software and drivers, before I could get my PDA to synchronise. For some reason, the software was only opening two COM ports, when there should have been about 4 or 5. Odd thing is though, that while ever the Nokia PC Suite is open, both my phones are connected to the PC. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or not. What it does mean though, is that I can have all my contacts and calendar details on both my phone, PDA and the PC. I think I’ll give up with the Tiscali email. It is not that good, and apart from getting a monthly email from OpenOffice.Org (which I no longer use), the rest is spam. Now I know I get a lot of spam with the Gmail address, but Google seems to have a very good spam filter, something that Tiscali could do with.

I think that will do for today.

update shield

I keep getting notifications that updates are ready for my computer. So, being the “obedient” Windows user that I am, I usually just install them….even if I don’t usually ’see’ how my computer was updated.

A few months ago, I suddenly cannot open Pagemaker files in my InDesign. I thought I had to reinstall InDesign until I came across an article in the internet about a Windows update that disables InDesign’s Pagemaker conversion capability. I figured it’s okay if the update messed up InDesign considering that they are of different software companies.

Anyway, these past weeks I cannot print my emails in Outlook Express. After searching the web for troubleshooting tips, I found out that this is a common problem once you update your Internet Explorer 6 to 7. After following the tips I found on the internet (which is to uninstall IE7 so it could rollback to IE6), I was finally able to print my emails in Outlook.

Now, I can see the update notification in my taskbar and I am ignoring it. Later, when I turn off my pc, I’ll get to choose to either click or not click the turn off button if I want to install these updates or not.

Who knows what other pc problems these updates will give me…what is up with this update thing, anyway?
