Update 3:27 PM EST, Oct 09, 2009: Apparently ZD-Net, normally a pretty reputable source, needs to be

Update 3:27 PM EST, Oct 09, 2009: Apparently ZD-Net, normally a pretty reputable source, needs to better fact-check its articles before posting. The title of the article has changed three times (that I’ve seen) today, from Yahoo Gave Iran . . ., to Did Yahoo Provide . . . ?, to now, Yahoo Vigorously Denies . . . . There may have been a story here. It could still prove to be true. In this case, though, ZD-Net’s source was an Iranian student-group’s blog. The blog claimed that members of the group had infiltrated the Iranian government and that they had first-hand knowledge. Maybe they do. A singular blog post should be an invitation for more research, though, not blind reporting. My apologies for posting it. Still kinda want to tag Yahoo!’s execs with bricks, though . . .

Original Text

Unrelated to CrossFit (but super, super important nonetheless).

There are unconfirmed reports suggesting that Yahoo! may have provided the Iranian government with identifiable information for over 200,000 Yahoo! accounts. Link. I’ll have more later, after Curtis finishes his daily round of character-building torture, but I’m legit pissed. WTF?

The State Department begged Twitter to delay long-planned maintenance on the site so that the Iranian’s in the street would continue to have a voice. Facebook enabled HTTPS for every IP that even remotely looked like it could have been coming from the region so that the Iranian people could continue to remain anonymous from their government. Tor operators opened up thousands of extra nodes and exit-points so that the Iranian people could have a fighting chance. Even freaking Google and Microsoft freaking worked together to make sure that the Iranian people had access to their interwebs and their news, despite the Iranian government’s best efforts to block them.

And Yahoo! effectively names names.

Dear /b/ and Anonymous. Please show Yahoo! some Marblecake and, also, The Game.

September 27, M. hauled his stuff over to the base and climbed aboard a tour bus for a drive to Baltimore. He flew across the seas and stopped at various -astans before finally reaching his destination. He had a delay at one of those -astans on the way which resulted in sitting on tiny seats in full body armor for a long time. I’m sure he will elaborate on that later.

I continue to hunt the elusive work. Meanwhile, I teach when I get enough students, knit, and read and most recently have become involved in a D&D game utilizing Maptools and Google Groups. One of their players had to drop out due to young spawn and I happened to be in the right place at the right time to get invited. My previous, brief foray into DMing a game with Maptools meant I understood a good number of the functions and I was able to share this information with my fellow players and such. I was quite pleased to have been able to jump in so quickly and prove somewhat useful.

The DM is fantastic. The premise is exciting. He keeps the pace moving nicely. He assigns helper roles. He uses Google Groups to play out noncombat encounters throughout the week between game sessions which keeps everyone involved and interested all the time. His presentation is good. He adds plenty of flair to his storytelling. He seems organized. He’s creative. I’m in love.

He is involved in this webcomic.

My fellow players are great too. We have a diverse group. The abilities and storylines are all already intertwining so nicely – even with me joining last minute. It’s just about all I’ve been able to talk about for the last week. Well, this and winning First Place in the Adult Fancywork, Knitted Shawl/Stole/Vest category and subsequent knitting related plans. These things have both been a wonderful distraction from my continued unemployment and M.’s lack of presence.

M. is still pretty busy with transitioning and learning his purpose and so forth but when things settle down I am certain he will post.

Meanwhile, interested parties can read my character’s adventure log to follow along with what’s happening in the story from my ranger’s perspective here.

I wanted to do this for a long time: explore Shenandoah National Park. One way to do it is to take a ride on Skyline Drive. For a full experience you actually would have to camp there but some friends and I decided to make a day trip. We definitely planned to go camping but August still was to humid to do this. Beware of the mosquitos. They can drive you crazy. We could only get rid of them after turning on a smoky fire.

The park is perfect for hiking up the mountains to catch breathtaking views of the area. There are multiple paths you can follow. From beginner to expert you should find a trail that suits you well. The park has much more to offer than you can cover in one day. Someday I’ll drive the whole 105 miles of the Skyline Drive. A camping trip is already in planning.

It all started out good when our taxi driver asked us if we knew that we’re staying in a fancy

It all started out good when our taxi driver asked us if we knew that we’re staying in a fancy hotel. We actually didn’t know that hotels on Nob Hill are supposed to be swanky. When we decided to go on a trip to San Francisco for a long weekend we found a good deal for a hotel that even had a spa. Well, we didn’t get disappointed. The hotel we stayed in, the Huntington, feels like staying with your rich uncle with a great taste for interior design. Should you plan to stay there don’t miss out on the Espresso Martini in the hotel bar.

Knowing that we just have three days to explore the city we tried to pack as much sightseeing into our day as we could. A must is seeing the Golden Gate Bridge. Don’t forget to bring a sweater. It’s always kind of chilly. In this city weather can change fast. We decided to take the boat tour in the bay which also let us see Alcatraz. We tried to avoid setting a foot on the island. There are masses of tourists and I don’t think you actually miss something. While being in the bay area we checked with Giradelli. They give out free samples in their store. Even though the samples are good I still think European chocolate tastes better. Don’t miss out on Lombard Street. Probably the funniest street I’ve ever seen.

Did I already tell you that I love San Francisco? This city really has flair. From great panorama views from up the hill to laid back people. This city is adorable. Personality is everywhere. People keep their architecture and culture intact and maintain it well. Apart from the hiking to get from point a to b it takes time to get around. After a while we actually decided to always take the taxi. Cable Cars are definitely made to entertain tourists but are a rip off. You pay the same price for a ride with a taxi. Because we got so many recommendations from friends for good restaurants and bars we wanted to visit taxis are the way to go.

We got a good impression of San Francisco within three days. If prices for living wouldn’t be that high we would totally consider living there. Sarah and I will go there again. Next up: Making a tour to the wineries and exploring the surrounding area.
