So this is going to be my big post about 2009, I don’t know how long I’ll ramble on for but I hope you can read the most of it. I’ll add tons of pictures and some of my graphics that suit the topic and hopefully it will keep you reading.

So 2009 hasn’t been really the best year of Stardoll,the dress-up dolls are still crappy, hardly anything new has happened or added to the website, more members (if that helps us in any way), more “gossip” blogs around wordpress and blogspot (all filled with silly wannabes), more hackers and spammers on the loose, loads of more make-up tutorials on youtube ( I wonder why . . .?) and more exspensive $200 dresses added to starplaza. Sounds pretty normal to me!

Nothing really new happened during the month of January, that’s why i posted a few rants and my amateur graphics (that’s not changed much . .). Except at the end of the month stardoll added a new feature called Styling Studio. I’ve only made one ever and that was only when it first came out and I thought it was amazing! Sadly now I think it is a waste of my $8. I could buy half of a non-superstar outfit or a nice Bisou dress, but rather than making fun, new, exciting Styling Studios, instead we’ve now got “MY LE, HOTBUYS, DKNY & RARES” . What a great way to encourage us kid’s into envying and making us buy more hotbuys/le so we could show it all off in our Styling Studios. It’s like everyone tyring to scream “Ohhh look how rich I am with my whole collection of first season LE!! and hotbuys from 2007!!! I paid $2000 for all these clothes! Envy me!!”. So everytime I see one of these I laugh at the poor girls, being obsessed with the virtual clothes. At the start of 2007 I was totally obsessed with getting rares/hotbuys/DKNY and look how that turned out? Scammed out of 6 codes and got hacked and I lost everything. Oh and what’s really funny about the Styling Studios is when people comment “Omg I totally want your wardrobe” over and over again.

So at the start of the month stardoll decided to change the SMS code system. From $67 stardollars and 1 month superstar to $50 stardollars and 1 month of superstar. $17 stardollars might not sound a lot to you, but it could of saved us ton’s of mobile phone credit!! And so stardoll mailed all of us UK users with this:

on the 14th of February, stardoll released a little freebie for us to celebrate Valentines Day. With a Red Lipstick, don’t know what I’m talking about? It looked something a little bit like this:

And on the lipstick cover it says “I (heart) you”, very cute. But sadly I never wear red lipstick on my medoll so it’s just been added to my “no use lipstick” pile! But it was great for stardoll to add that freebie for Non superstars and Superstars and people who couldn’t buy lipstick’s from Sephora at the time, finally could have a small thing to add to their medoll creator.

March

 At the start of March, new DKNY and ELLE collections were added and also some cheap clothing to celebrate Woman’s Day . At the time, I had no idea why they did this? I really wouldn’t want to wear a dress that had “Woman’s Day” plastered across the dress, but I suppose it is for a good cause so I think I bought a few things. Also in the month of March, stardoll people were going into panic as they thought there was an “Italian Mafia” going round stardoll hacking into their accounts through friend requests. And i was like WTF?? I remember the day when I went to the OrginalClub and there was a big topic called something like “Hacking! Italian Mafia!!” and so I went to check on it and there was a big discussion about how some “elite’s” accounts were hacked and all their hotbuys/LE/DKNY/Lottery Dresses/Rares were gone. So to find out more I went on some of the gossip blogs and funnily enough they were all talking about it! Such a shame some people lost their accounts and all their stardollars but calling it the Italian Mafia is just childish. There is such a word as Hackers! Also, when you tried to contact Stardoll it would be ordered into sections, just like it is today. This means that stardoll could find the right automated message for you. This is one of the reasons I really dislike stardoll staff is that they can’t find enough of their time or staff to actually give us an actual response on what we asked them, I can’t count on how many times where I’ve gotten a reply from stardoll that was completely out of my question! Club Penguin, has wayy more members but both are about on the same ranks, yet Club penguin actually reply to you with people (their staff) replying to you!

Along with that stupid update, stardoll added 2 new hairstyles:

One of them was from the Rihanna doll, and when it was first released I totally loved it! But now I prefer my 2000 starpoints hair. And the other hairstyle, I would only wear if my outfit was Decades Inspired.

the new cheaper LE was released in late March:

I totally loved this range of clothing but sadly I got there too late and only bought 1 thing, as everything that was left was either for men, or I just didn’t like it. Just the same as LE as it was sort of “limited” but it was a little bit cheaper than LE and more edgy designs. Sadly the next collection of Antidote wasn’t the best   . . but that will come much more later!

On march 28th our only make-up store Sephora was on sale and was closing down. I really regret not buying more make-up, as let’s just say Dot doesn’t really match up.

It was my favourite store out of the whole of Starplaza! And it’s really hard to use Dot in my medoll tutorials as I think Sephora does a better job and some new players don’t have any Sephora in their Medoll Creator. I think stardoll could of added another better make-up brand instead of Dot, everyone was hoping for Mac and that would be amazing to have! I use Estee Lauder in real life (as my mom uses it), and that would be incredible to have in starplaza! Also Dior have an amazing set of eyeshadow pallets, which I have 2, so that would also be cool to have in starplaza also.

April

At the start of April Stardoll decided to change our Medoll Creator to as we know it today:

A lot different from what it used to be, but it’s a lot better. The only downside from this medoll creator is that you couldn’t zoom in your medoll, which you used to be able to do and so it is sometimes hard to do detailed make-up looks. Also a new collection of LE was added and I only bought 2 things but it cost me all of my stardollar savings!

 And more on starplaza news in march, Philosophy was on sale- the first collection. And then we were waiting for the new Philosophy collection to be released. i actually really liked Philosophy, except it was quite on the exspensive side, but it was great on sale!! So I bought all that I could or all that I liked.

And at the end of the month Play & Earn was introduced! I didn’t have a clue what it was or what to do until I read all the instructions, which I hardly ever do. And I never really got it so I only got like $2 stardollars ever day excluding my $1 a day, which was still there at the time. It was only till much more later I got the hang of it, and when it was first released there was only 2 games which was the dress-up remember game and the Paparazzi.

The first day of May, stardoll reached 30 million members as to celebrate they gave us these:

Now it’s because of us stardoll reached 30 million members as we joined up so to make us pay for a small little bag and a big sign for $40 altogether is pure cheek! fair enough the T-shirt and the tank top was free but to do that? Also stardoll celebrated their 3rd Birthday and had a competition everyday through sceneries and also a small little B-day cake which we could “dress-up”

Also in the month of May our dear Animal-Lovers club was deleted. i really loved going into that club and talking to everyone on the topic and to see it gone, made me never to go into clubs again. I’ve talked to the owner of Animal-Lovers before it was shut down for like 1 minute and she seemed nice. But now Fashion Club hardly have anything interesting to talk about in the Topics either do Orginal Club so whats the point anymore?

Also on Play & Earn it seemed that Lithuanian folk seemed really good at these games, with 6 of them in a row in the high-scores list. And so I wondered if it was a cheat or if it was a bunch of friends going round to each others houses in Lithuania. And weeks later we found out the cheat to get on the high scores

These handbags were added to starplaza and noticed the sign above, for a limited time. Yet people kept on saying they were limited Edition . . and I wouldn’t die for these handbags thank you very much . .

Also stardoll stopped the one $1 a day as they thought Play & Earn was giving us free stardollars, and I really want that $1 a day back as it totally helped me all the months that it was there, and it helped non-superstars find a way of makng money as if you play Play & Earn you have to spend it in a day and you don’t get to keep it, so non-superstar wouldn’t be really happy with this

Another strong consumer spending gain. The Commerce Department announced consumer spending rose 0.5% in November, following a 0.6% increase in October. Personal incomes rose in November by the most in six months.¹

Hashing out the home sales data. New home sales fell 11.3% last month, undoubtedly affected by the perception that the first-time buyer credit would expire. Existing home sales soared by 7.4% as buyers scrambled to meet the possible deadline. The median price for an existing home was $172,600 last month compared to $217,400 for a new one – that certainly also helped residential resales.^2,3

Health care reform clears Senate. On Christmas Eve, Senate Democrats got the 60 votes needed to pass that chamber’s version of a historic health care reform bill. The House and Senate will work to reconcile their respective bills next month.⁴

Mortgage rates edge above 5%. Freddie Mac has average rates on 30-year FRMs at 5.05% in its latest survey. Over the weekend, its deputy chief economist Amy Crews Cutts told the Washington Post that “anything we get at or below 5% is a gift at this point.” She thinks rates will hit 6% by the end of 2010.⁵

Catching up with gold & oil. Last Thursday, gold posted a gain of $10.80 to reach $1,104.80 per ounce. With the dollar strengthening, gold prices fell about $123 during December 3-24. Oil prices ended the week at $78.05, rising about 5% in 3.5 market days.⁶

Lower volumes, higher stocks. Santa Claus dropped by Wall Street – the Dow ascended almost 2% to end a relatively quiet week at 10,520.10. The NASDAQ closed at 2,285.69 Thursday; the S&P 500 closed at 1,126.48.⁷

So you may or may not have noticed that I am discussing the first movement AFTER the other two. Well the reason for this is rather simple: It’s hard. Hard to play, hard to write, hard to understand, hard. BUT! I definitely think it has turned out pretty well.

It’s known as “Mvt I – The Trickster” and is more of a scherzo movement than anything else. The overall form can be classified as a “loose sonata-form” and it is a true adrenaline rush of a movement. It opens with a viola solo stating the melody of the piece. It is a very clear “HERE IT IS” gesture that I like and don’t feel to be ‘unimaginative’ or anything like that simply because it’s such a strange melody. Personally, I see it as more of a motive or idea than a melody.

After the viola solo the piano comes in with a presentation of the harmonic gestures present throughout the piece with the strings giving accompanying chords. This suspenseful and more high-pitched intro then crescendos to nothing before the flute and cello take the listener off on the journey that is this movement. The biggest thing I wanted to experiment with in this movement was rhythm. One thing I admire most about the work of Sergei Prokofiev is his ability to make 3/4 or 4/4 or any time signature sound like MUCH MORE than just 3/4 or 4/4, etc. I think I did a pretty good job of not only working outside my usual realm of simple 4/4 half note rhythmic pulses, but of incorporating other time signatures in the middle of the simpler ones and of “blurring the bar lines” for multiple measures.

In what would be considered the development of this sonata form movement, I included an Irish-inspired violin solo. It takes the basic notes of the Irish reel The Pacific Slope and juxtaposes it against the primary melody of the movement (which isn’t the main melody of the PIECE btw). I have a certain love for Irish fiddling and wanted for the longest time to write something that incorporates it, and this movement just turned out to be my opportunity! It’s relevance to this movement is drawn from the idea that the violin is an instrument of tricksters like the devil (as suggested in The Devil and Daniel Webster). I basically took that concept and ran with it.

I consider this movement as a whole to be a major success. Originally it was my favorite, and then after having to make so many changes to please my professor without betraying myself, I started to like it less and less. However, after a few changes and taking a complete break from it to work on the other movements and give my brain time to formulate some new ideas, I fell in love with it all over again. If I can find some performers to tackle the incredibly challenging parts, I would absolutely love to have this movement performed in next semester’s SCI concert. Otherwise, it’ll have to wait until my senior recital. :\
