Guillaume Dufay
- Missa “L’homme armé”
- Supremum Est Mortalibus Bonum

Oxford Camerata
cond. Jeremy Summerly

So with the recording of the album finished, I’ve had some down time to work on some new thing

So with the recording of the album finished, I’ve had some down time to work on some new things. I’ve been talking to several musicians and getting lots of new ideas and even source material to base new releases on, so things have been good.

The other night, I was talking to Julia LaDense about collaborating on a potential release. She brought to my attention the Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo, famous for murdering his wife and her lover in addition to writing some of the most famous madrigals of his time. He’s made a lot of pieces of this entirely vocal based composition style and Julia chose one for us to remix.

So yes! That’s the idea behind the project I’m working on right now! We’re going to be working on a split remix of the album Gesualdo: Complete Sacred Music for Five Voices, recorded by Oxford Camerata.

For my half, I’ll be sampling the songs and processing them using AudioMulch coupling them with field recordings I’ve been taking over the past few months.

Below is a (super rough) picture of how I’ll be processing the samples and field recordings. And below that is the very first song I’ve finished for the project!

(Please forgive my handwriting, I’m a musician, after all.)

So the Dancer strikes again – she waved her magic wand and managed to get us tickets to a BBC

So the Dancer strikes again – she waved her magic wand and managed to get us tickets to a BBC Singers’ concert, exploring Lenten themes through Bruckner and Dvorak. The first piece by good old Anton, was Locus iste a Deo factus est, an absolutely mind blowing if delicate piece that I think was produced for a dedication rite for a Lintz chapel, where the chap was working as an organist. A capella has always been a special love of mine, King’s Singers to Beach Boys, it’s all good. Nothing like a bit of renaissance polyphony to perk up your morning walk along the river to work – and Locus iste didn’t disappoint.

Whilst still enjoying some pastries and the Harvey Nicks tea on my palate, I was less than pleasantly surprised by some German pieces by Mendelssohn. I don’t know what he’d been smoking, but the idea of setting a a tune to a German psalm is definitely a massive no-no. The idea of have a Geistliches Lied with a piano accompaniement was an even worse one.

The Dvorak piece was, however, exquisite. Most are familiar with Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater, some enlightened persons could probably name a few others, but the Dvorak Stabat that was composed in what were described to us as pretty tragic circumstances is certainly less…. classical. More Verdi than Vivaldi, more Beach Boys than the Oxford Camerata. It had movements that made me nod off, judging by the inane foreign people sitting behind us perhaps more obviously than was necessary, but the choral pieces were truly mind blowing. The BBC Singers managed mostly very well, and despite some heavy-going chromatic work, they managed to keep the magic going. The subtleties of an unorchestrated piece were evident in a setting which was more familial than concert like at some protestant dive in Knightsbridge, and the result was a thoroughly enjoyable night. Tomorrow will be Question Time with Boris Johnsson and the ‘bishop’ of Rochester. Should be a good time… But for tonight kids, that’s all. Sleep well and don’t forget to brush behind your medulla oblangata.
