Ja, ich bin 2 Wochen nachdme ich Sebastian Sturm live gesehen habe nochmal zu einem Konzert von ihm gefahren. (Spicht für seine Live-Qualitäten – Und für die Überredenskünste von einem Freund (und Reggae-Fanatiker) von mir.)

Die Location war der U-Club in Wuppertal. Ich war jedenfalls angenehm überrascht. Der Einlass verzögerte sich gerade mal um eine halbe Stunde, da bin ich viel schlimmeres gewöhnt. Die Location selbst sah richtig gut aus, im Stil von einem.. naja, Untergrund eben. Und die Getränkepreise gingen auch klar. 2,50€ für ein Bier und 3€ für einen Vodka-Absolkut Shot laden ja gerade dazu ein, sich das Konzert noch schöner zu saufen.

Sebastian Sturm war diesmal in Topform, wie gewohnt begleitet von der hervorragenden Jin Jin Band. Ich hatte das Gefühl er war diemal besser drauf als in Bochum und legte noch mehr Power und Gefühl in den Auftritt. Leider war der Auftritt relativ kurz (ca. 1 Stunde), da er sich die zeit mit pablo Moses teilte. Man hat aber immerhin einen Song vom neuen Album hören dürfen, der Lust auf mehr machte. Ein weiteres Foto haben wir mit ihm dann nicht gemacht, da wir ihm nicht stalkermäßig aufs Klo hinterher rennen wollten. (Anscheinend gab es im Backstage keins, denn auch die Band latschte regelmäßig an uns vorbei).

Pablo Moses, den ich vorher nicht kannte, legte auch eine zufriedenstellende Show ab. Die Riddims waren durchweg gut, die Texte eher nicht mein Fall, aber nicht schlecht, bis auf “Mama Ye”, der gefiel mir sehr gut. Seine Dancemoves waren für sein hohes Alter auch teils recht gut und teils recht amüsant.

Ich empfehle jedem, der die Möglichkeit hat, mal 13 € locker zu machen und sich Sebastian Sturm anzusehen.

  Merci, Paris; Miles Davis in the house; Pablo Moses likewise…

It’s a cold morning in Paris, and the city is enshrouded in white gauze, the sun a pale white onion that offers little warmth and keeps its distance from the frosty streets below. Today, the members of Groundation woke to a feeling of gratitude towards the people of Paris, once again. Since our first tour in France we’ve played Glaz’art, Bataclan, The Olympia, and finally last year, the Zenith. I joked with our promoter that according to this progression I expected to be playing the Stade de France this year. He laughed uncomfortably.

La Cite de la Musique

Just across from the Zenith is the Cité de la Musique which is now hosting an exhibition on Miles Davis. Miles spent a lot of time in Europe, Paris in particular. He composed the score to the French film L’ascenseur Pour L’Echafault (Stairway to the Scaffold), had an with French actress Juliette Greco, met the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and other national celebrities.

On a personal level, Miles is the reason I started playing the trumpet. The sound of Mr. Davis inspired me to pull a cold, smelly coil of metal tubing out of a box every single day and blow into it until it either started sounding good or my lips started bleeding. From childhood I emulated Miles’ ability to convey the most fragile and private feelings through his horn: love, pain, hope. It wasn’t until much later that I learned that not everything in Miles’ life was worth emulating, and I eventually came to understand that while music may be very personal, it doesn’t tell us much about the person who’s making it.

The fact that amazes me is that Miles’ egocentric, angry personality can’t be heard in songs like his version of “Someday My Prince Will Come” or “Surrey with a Fringe on Top”. His sound was vulnerable and sensitive (more like Gregory Isaacs than Burning Spear), but Miles didn’t treat the people in his life with much tenderness, nor did he show his vulnerability to them, and by most accounts, he treated his wives and girlfriends as poorly as everyone else, probably worse. On the other hand, I know that legendary jazz musician Duke Ellington was a really, really nice guy, while his one-time bassist Charles Mingus would just as soon punch you in the face as perform his heartbreaking ballad “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”*. There’s something strangely disquieting about this fact.

I’ve never read Pablo Moses’ biography. I don’t even know if one exists, but I’ve known him long enough to see that he doesn’t resent the world the way Miles Davis and Charles Mingus did. Generous, philosophical, funny and humble are the words that come to my mind in describing the composer of “A Song” and “Dubbing is a Must”, adjectives which also apply to Duke Ellington. But Pablo’s vocal performance is aggressive, dark and masculine, a little bit raw. Pablo sang with Groundation last night in Paris, and we’d been touring with him, German singer Sebastian Sturm and the Jin Jin Band who backed them both for shows in Strassbourg and Lyon. The people of Paris treated all of us (Americans, Jamaicans and Germans) with respect and great warmth, and I couldn’t help thinking of the amazing encouragement this country has offered to jazzmen (as the French call them).

Coleman Hawkins, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Cannonball Adderley, and many, many others tapped into the ravenous and diverse cultural appetite of Europe, allowing them to develop their music even when American audiences offered a cold shoulder, or in many cases, a racist hand pushing them down despite their talent. Today, not only jazz musicians, but Reggae artists from Lee Perry to Burning Spear rely on European audiences. After playing in Paris last night, I’m sure I share with them a deep gratitude towards these fans and their hospitality. As a reader, I also appreciate that a great many foreign writers owe much of their best work to Paris: Hemmingway, James Joyce, Henry Miller and James Baldwin to name a few. At the very least, Americans probably still owe the French a nod for their ancestors helping our ancestors with a little spot of bother known as The American Revolutionary War.

The Miles Davis exhibition in Paris included a world-class concert series, forums, classes and lectures, including one on Miles as a fashion icon. With a music school right next door, the whole neighborhood was filled with the comings and goings of different styles and instruments. While Kelsey and I were enjoying a great meal across the street at a French restaurant on Avenue Jean Jaurès a bunch of old musicians tromped in with their cases and their wives (may they be rewarded in the afterlife for having put up with us in this one). I couldn’t help grinning: artists and people who love beauty feel drawn helplessly to the beacon of Paris the way a bee is drawn to a bright, fragrant flower. But in addition to being the city of light and taste, Paris is also the greatest example of what is possible when a people refuse to allow their culture to be dictated to them by some distant authority like the church or the mass media. As long as cities like this exist, artists with vision will always have a home.

La noche empezó fuerte con Akatz y con sus ganas de hacer bailar al personal.

The Ethiopians lo pusieron ahí ofreciendo su mejor reggae y rocksteady.

Y después, llegaron ellos.

Con una fuerza impresionante y dispuestos a no dejar a nadie quieto durante la hora y media que tocaron. Impresionante directo, impresionantes músicos y una banda totalmente comprometida con su público y viceversa.

Sábado 11

Desde primera hora de la tarde, comenzó la fiesta en la playa con las sound systems y con la proyección del documental Rico Rodriguez. The Legacy hasta el inicio de los conciertos.

The Aggrolites revolucionaron al personal con sus ritmos pseudopunks.

Llegados de la sweet Jamaica, U-Roy y Pablo Moses demostraron que a pesar de sus mas de 60 años siguen conservando ese espíritu joven del reggae.

Cerrando el cartel actuó Alborosie ofreciendo un concierto que gustó a algunos y disgustó a otros. En la redacción de DTR se habla de poco compromiso por parte del italiano. Se agradecerá un punto de vista ajeno en los comentarios.

La zona de acampada estaba a una distancia de 18,9 km de la zona de conciertos. Había autobuses que conectaban ambas zonas pero con unas frecuencias de 20-30 minutos. La vuelta con autobus desde el concierto solo se podia hacer a partir de las 4h30.

Organización

En cuanto a la organización, mostramos nuestro descontento ante la medida de no permitir la salida del recinto entre las 00:00 y las 04:00.

Un cartel impresionante y un pepino con la Tokio.

Hace unos meses Groundation visitó Lima, la ciudad en la que vivo. Hubo expectativa, se vivió un concierto de primera. En esa ocasión elaboré un cancionero con algunos de los temas que más me gustan de Groundation y también tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a esta banda que sin duda es una leyenda viva del reggae a nivel mundial.

01. Run The Plan: Es el tema que abre el álbum. Empieza con una sección instrumental de percusión a cargo de Paul Spina. Ésta poco a poco va siendo acompañada hasta que se incorpora la voz de Harrison.

02. Everyone Could Lose: Melodía espiritual, mensaje para meditar… recordarnos que la victoria puede ser adversa para cualquiera.

03. So Blind: Abrir ojos y mentes a las reales enseñanzas. Majestuoso teclado. Big Up Groundation.

04. Time Come: Intervenión vocal de Pablo Moses quien también estuvo hace algún tiempo en Lima. La melódica deleitando. Pero aún hay más… un saxo lejos de extinguirse nos cuenta que tiene argumentos abundantes. Un contraste de voces que convergen en mensaje y ritmo.

05. By All Means: El tema que más me ha gustado de este rico álbum. Cuidadoso trabajo en los metales. Integración armoniosa de bajo y teclados. Detalles vocales sorprendentes.

06. Blues Away: Con la colaboración de The Congos. Y en la percusión Uzziah Thompson.

07. Not So Simple: Uzziah Thompson también colabora con la percusión en este tema. La presencia de vientos es desde el inicio y preámbulo para la voz y coros. Alto trabajo en los coros.

08. Here I Am: Canción que le da el nombre al presente álbum. Tema roots con mucha pasta para defender su posición entre tantas buenas canciones. Impecable desenvolvimiento en los vientos y coros.

09. You Can Profit: Tiene cierto detalle en las cuerdas para cerrar la canción que me gusta bastante. The Congos presentes.

10. Beating Heart: Sí se siente el beat Turururu… ricos vientos nuevamente.

11. Walk Upright: Uzziah Thompson contribuye en la percusión. Teclados provocadores, el bajo cuenta la historia desde su punto de vista, los vientos son inquietos y la percusión bastante viva. Es esta canción una historia que discurre a través de etapas.

12. Golan To Galilee: Las letras bíblicas presentes siempre con Groundation. Congos, Thompson y Moses acompañan a cerrar esta travesía musical.
