Controversial Los Angeles Laker star Ron Artest is caught up in an investigation of welfare fraud against his sister Latoya Holmes-Ivey.

Police and housing authorities raided the home Latoya Holmes-Ivey and her three children rent at 336 E. Burgess Ave. Wednesday morning.

Holmes-Ivey is suspected of receiving federal housing assistance, as well as other social services, while receiving financial assistance from her millionaire basketball/rapper brother, and not reporting it.

That is welfare fraud, and is a criminal offense.

A tip came from a former CPA that handled Ron Artest financial affairs a Tennessee-based accounting firm called TriStar Sports and Entertainment.

According to court documents, the ex-employee sent an e-mail to the Housing and Urban Development Office in Indianapolis claiming that TriStar, under the direction of Artest, was using one of his bank accounts to pay all of Holmes-Ivey’s bills.

The man requested to remain anonymous, saying that he could not, in good conscience, fail to report such an ethics infraction.

Ron Artest may want to check the wording in that non-disclosure form that I am certain the former accountant signed, as the accounting firm’s reputation has got to be destroyed by this leak. Confidentiality between their clients is key to their business.

If the former CPA did sign a non-disclosure form, then his disclosure of this information, even if it is to be found true, will be admissible in court, and will be the reason that all charges will be dropped.

Housing authorities said that if the allegations are true, Holmes-Ivey would have used at least $34,000 in taxpayer money she was not entitled to. According to court documents, the ex-employee sent an e-mail to the Housing and Urban Development Office in Indianapolis claiming that TriStar, under the direction of Artest, was using one of his bank accounts to pay all of Holmes-Ivey’s bills.

Housing authorities said that if the allegations are true, Holmes-Ivey would have used at least $34,000 in taxpayer money she was not entitled to.

Note that the investigation and any future charges will be against Holmes-Ivey and NOT Ron Artest. It is the responsibility of the benefactor of Federal aide to report any income or gifts to the Welfare department so they can determine if the individual is actually in need at that time.

The neighbors of Holmes-Ivey said they were skeptical of her, because she used to brag about who her brother was.

“I never understood why she was on assistance because of that, when she told me he was her brother,” said Marcia Taylor. “The people who do need the assistance don’t get it, when the people who don’t need it get a lot of time.”

I didn’t realize there were early college football games on today otherwise I would have done this earlier and made some bets. Unfortunately I was stuck at work.

I was going to play Rutgers -3 and Cincinnati -20.5, but the games started before I had a chance. Other games that were playable include: Colorado State -3, Kent State +4, Tulsa -14.5, and Bowling Green -7. I got my Nebraska -10 pick in, but didn’t get to post here in time

Here are my other picks:

Pittsburgh 0 (vs WVU)

Boise State -9.5 (buy 4pts) (vs Nevada)

The Boise spread opened at -10 which would may have been fine but now it’s up to -13.5 which is too close for comfort. Nevada is a good team with a strong offense. They are on an 8-0 run after losing their first 3 and have score more than 50 points in 5 of those 8 and more than 30 in all of them. Last year Nevada only lost by 7. I may just steer clear of this game, especially since my NCAAF system is so new and untested.

NBA:

DEN -12.5 (vs NY)

PHI +12.5 (buy 7) (vs ATL)

DAL +2.5 (buy 4) (vs IND)

I’ll play Denver straight, but the other two games I’ll have to work into a teaser if I want anything out of them. I’d do PHI, DAL, and any other team I mentioned in the last post in a 7pt teaser if I were to play them.

A few weeks back, I got to take Aiden to a Pacers game. It was Cub Scout Night and Family Night

A few weeks back, I got to take Aiden to a Pacers game. It was Cub Scout Night and Family Night – so the tickets were cheap and we got some pretty cool stuff, like free t-shirts and hot dogs and drinks. Uncle Kevin came along too for a guys’ night out. This was my third Pacers game and the first one since Thanksgiving, 2002.

Remember a few years ago when Aiden played for the Tar Heels? He’s been a fan of Carolina since then – much to my chagrin. But at least he’s not a Boilermaker or Wildcats fan. He’d have to sleep out in the shed if that were the case.

Anyway, Aiden was super-excited to learn that Pacers rookie, Tyler Hansbrough, was a Tar Heel last year. He was also pretty excited to see how big Psycho T’s hands and feet are compared with his own.

He just had to buy something, so he got a hat and foam finger (with his own money). Looks like he’s starting to gather a collection of foam fingers. I guess there’s worse things…

Then, at the end of the game, we got to walk on the floor and Aiden got to shoot a basket. While it doesn’t have the same aura as Hinkle Fieldhouse, it was still a pretty neat experience.

Oh yeah – and the Pacers beat Boston, which made it all the more sweet. That started the weekend’s sweep of Indy teams against New England teams that weekend. The Colts game was much more dramatic, though.

A grand time was had by all. Hopefully, it won’t be 7 years before I go to another Pacers game.

How’s it been going you ask? Not good. Work last week was a special kind of nightmare–th

How’s it been going you ask? Not good. Work last week was a special kind of nightmare–the kind in which editorial emergencies actually exist. I made up that word to make fun of people wanting their stuff turned around quickly, and last week was one editorial emergency after another. I guess a better description of editorial emergencies is someone else messing up something somehow and then having me clean it up–in 10 minutes! What? The document you made 800 copies of before I saw it had a typo in the first sentence? I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

Anyway, work stress and 10-hour work days are not good for my morale, my sleep patterns, or my running. So last week my running kind of took a nose dive. That wasn’t helped by the fact that I think my shoes are shot. And then when I went to get some (nothing spells instant motivation like new running shoes), they were out of them at Road Runner Sports–where I only go because George made me buy a VIP membership right before he quit, even though the place is like half an hour from my house. So those sneakers are coming special order from RRS HQ, but in the meantime I really need shoes because my legs hurt. So I went to Pacers, where I should have gone in the first place and got the hook up. Yes, I paid a little bit more, but the guy at Pacers discussed this history of the Brooks Adrenalines with me. (I wore those shoes for 5 years before switching to the Saucony Guide in July.) The guy at RRS had a hard time discussing the word hello with me.

Last night I got sent home from the track after running a 7:45 mile. That’s right. I was too pathetic to work out. Ok, that’s not entirely true. I did run a 7:45 mile, which really was as fast as I could go (I should have been running about 7:15 or faster). But I think that happened because I went to my weights class, and we used the Bosu ball, which totally wipes me out every time. Someday I’ll learn that it makes more sense to just wake up and go to the track in the morning, but that someday probably won’t be anytime during the winter. Running slow is bad for my ego, but I can usually gut it out, but last night my legs were really bothering me, so after a 1:47 400 (ugh), I started limping on the recovery and decided to call it a night. Fingers crossed the new shoes heal all wounds. I’m racing on Saturday

Last night was fun, but here’s hoping the Raps have something left in their run-and-gun legs. Coming off a 123-112 home win over the Pacers, Toronto is in Charlotte tonight to face the 4-9 Bobcats. Full game coverage and other great Raptors stuff is available over at Raptors Republic.

Charlotte snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 104-88 win over Indiana on Sunday, its first win since picking up renowned douchebag Stephen Jackson in a deal with Golden State early last week. Jackson’s production with the Bobcats has been par for his course — decent scoring numbers (17.6), low shooting percentages (42.6 from the field and 29.4 from deep) and little in the way of wins (one in four games). He and Gerald Wallace share the scoring load on a team void of any real star players — one that Raptors should be able to handle even on a back-t0-back.

Last night’s Raptors performance was typical of the way they’ve played in most of their wins this season — great offense, no D and a sketchy second half before closing out strong. Jose Calderon had his best game, attacking early both with the drive and from deep and finishing with a season-high 21 on 8-of-11. Chris Bosh was sloppy offensively, but I’m counting on him bouncing back with a strong effort and leading the boys to a win tonight.

The Raptors and Bobcats get going from Charlotte at seven.

Championship game but they can’t afford to get caught napping here. This will be no problem for Texas as they are focused on going to the Championship game after the loss last year that put them out. Texas A&M has flopped in six of nine as dogs of 20 points or more and in 10 of 12 ATS off a home win. The Longhorns have scored at least 41 points in their four previous road games this season. Free Pick for Friday November 27th

Alabama @ Auburn

Auburn enters this game with revenge after getting blanked last year. Alabama is going to the SEC Championship game against Florida so this game is a warm up. The Tigers have covered seven of 11 against Alabama and the home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five showdowns. The Crimson Tide dropped nine of 13 ATS when giving up more than 11 points on the highway. Auburn will not win but they will keep it close.

Free Pick for Saturday November 28th

Arkansas @ LSU

The loss for LSU was a tough one that will linger over to this week. Arkansas has pulled off the upset against LSU the last two seasons. The Razorbacks are 11-6 as road dogs and the visitor is 6-3 in the past nine meetings. The Tigers are 2-14 as SEC home favorites and they have floundered in 27 of 34 ATS at Baton Rouge in November. Arkansas knows hwo to beat LSU and will do it again.

Free Pick For Sunday November 29th

Indianapolis @ Houston
Houston will be playing on a short week and they have to get Chris Brown in the right mindset for this game. Houston has cashed eight straight as home dogs and won six of those eight SU, the only two losses at the hands of the Colts by a total of four points. The Colts have struggled within the division, dropping 14 of 21 ATS, while the Texans are 6-2 at Reliant Stadium versus AFC-South citizens. Indianapolis has won six of seven at Houston, but failed in five of seven ATS. Houston finally gets the win against the Colts.

I just didn’t feel like running last night.

A burrito bol fueled my run last night.

Steve and I have both been fighting off a weird “maybe it’s a cold, maybe it’s not” throat-scratchiness, and running into the chilly darkness just didn’t seem appealing.

Then, we got an e-mail from our group-run organizer announcing we’d be going to Chipotle after the run. Chipotle changes everything.

We could have skipped the run and gone to Chipotle ourselves, but it wouldn’t have seemed right. So we headed out, more excited for the food than the run.

Of course, we had a great time once we got out there. It was a hilly route, but my pace group held a solid 8:10 pace for the 5.26-mile out-and-back — possibly fueled by the promise of yummy food after (plus, sports nutritionists say you can count on a 10-percent increase in calories burned for each degree of incline. This means running on a 10-percent incline actually doubles your calorie-burn, meaning I more than earned my veggie burrito bol).

This made me wonder why I don’t dangle carrots like these to incentivize workouts more often. My new goal, in line with my new run-happy philosophy, is to promise myself something for every workout. A month ago, I wrote about some running toys I’ve got my eye on. These are fine and good for long-term goals, but I need some rewards for micro-goals: a nice bath, an hour with a book, or some other cheap, sustainable carrot I can dangle in front of my eyes on a daily basis. I can think of lots of food-related rewards, but it would be nice to mix that up a little.

How do you reward yourself for hard workouts?

Who ever said high school algebra was worthless? It is so wonderful seeing mathematics put to good

Who ever said high school algebra was worthless? It is so wonderful seeing mathematics put to good use. Not only did my system call another 3-0 night plus a 1-0 NHL game, it called it with such beauty I cannot describe it.

What I am mainly referring to here, is the Pacers-Raptors game. The spread was set at +5 for the Pacers, but that was too low according to my system. The only number that worked for it was using the Pacers in a 7pt teaser, making the spread +12. And what ended up happening? The Pacers went on to lose by 11 points! Wonderful!

The other beautiful game was the Knicks-Lakers game. The spread had the Lakers as a -13 point favorite. My GF system did not like that, though. But you know what it did like? A -9 point spread. and How much did the Lakers win by? 10! Boo-Yah!

Obviously I know I’m going to lose a few games here and there as no system is perfect. My guess is I will probably get a loss tomorrow as there are 12 NBA games and 14 NHL games. I’m not saying I know I will get a loss tomorrow, I’m just saying the odds would indicate I’m due for one soon. I fully intend on looking at all of them to find the most playable games and hopefully I don’t lose. We’ll see though. With 26 games to analyze, though, I’ve got my work cut out for me.

All-in-all, tonight, I was 4-0 SU, 6-0 ATS (counting both teasers), but only 1-3 O/U. I’m gonna have to work on that last one.

P.S. Not sure if I’m the last guy to find out about this but you can watch NHL games online via Versus. You can also get to it by going to the boxscore of the game on sports.yahoo.com and clicking the “live game” button on the side (when available). That is pretty much awesome.

Hope is restored, citizens of Toronto! The Raptors got our beloved city back in the win column tonight, jumping on the Pacers with 74 first half points en route to a 123-112 win at the ACC. Of course, it wasn’t without the usual second half fun: This time the Raptors saw a 21-point lead slip to five (the fourth time in five home wins they’ve come close to blowing huge leads) before rallying late and putting it away.

Jose Calderon led the Raptors with 21 points on 8-of-11, effectively getting to the hoop early and knocking down a handful of jumpers in what was probably his strongest game of the year. Jarrett Jack continued his recent string of solid play, going 7-of-7 and finishing with 18 points and six assists in 30 minutes off the bench against his former mates.

Calderon and Jack’s efforts weren’t the only strong ones for Toronto, whose first half output was its best since 1999 — Hedo Turkoglu and Andrea Bargnani each had efficient 14-point outings, with Bargnani coming on strong after a sluggish, foul-plagued start. Chris Bosh was just 5-of-19 but had 12 boards and a few big second half blocks.

In all, another up-tempo, catch-me-if-you-can type game for the Raps — a style of play that Toronto fans are going to need to adjust to if they haven’t already. The win bumps the Raps to 7-8 — good for seventh in the East — with a road date in Charlotte Wednesday.

A win tonight and the Raptors slip into the East’s last playoff spot with 67 games remaining! Still a ways to go, but we might as well start making a push now. The Pacers are in town tonight for a tilt at the ACC, tipping at seven. Check out the full preview at Raptors Republic, featuring my NBA 2k10 game sim.

It’s been an up-and-down year for the Pacers to say the least — after starting with three losses, they won five straight (including a homey over the LeBrons) but have since lost three, leaving them 5-6. Indiana is led by Danny Granger, a guy that shoots a ton and scores a lot, though I’m not so convinced he’s the type of guy that is gonna take a team too far as a number one scoring option (case in point: The Pacers kinda suck). Of course, it’ll also be fun to check out the infamous T.J. Ford, who’s averaged just 9.7 points and 2.6 assists in 11 games this season with a back and neck that are seemingly in tact. If you haven’t caught on by now, I’m not too high on the Pacers and don’t see why we shouldn’t beat them by 100 tonight.

If all goes according to plan, Toronto shouldn’t need Hedo Turkoglu come crunch time, which is good because he hasn’t crunched a thing in his first month as a Raptor. Still, it’d be nice to see the guy get it rolling tonight. The Raptors should also get a boost with Marco Belinelli and Antoine Wright supposedly ready to go, adding some punch to a second unit that has looked better with an improved Jarrett Jack at the helm.

I’ll be checking this one out live, so hopefully I’ll slide into some seats close enough to get a good perspective. Go Raps!

Darrell Walker quit midway through the Raptors’ hellish 1997-98 season, earning himself the status as Most Useless Coach in team history (and yes, that includes Kevin O’Neill). Nevertheless, I tip my hat to him for this never-before-seen tirade, which seemingly indicates he cared a little, at least.

The footage comes from a Raptors-Pacers game — see where I’m going with this? Yes, the Pacers are in town Wednesday night for a date at the ACC.

#1 – Atlanta Hawks The best team of the NBA so far. Josh Smith has been superb in the first 14 games

#1 – Atlanta Hawks

The best team of the NBA so far. Josh Smith has been superb in the first 14 games. He has been the horse they have been riding. The Hawks had a weird loss to the Hornets Friday but that’s Ok on the road and on a second of back-to-backs.

#2 – Cleveland Cavaliers

Without Shaq, the team plays better. He just doesn’t fit there and with him out for a while now, they were able to give minutes to JJ Hickson who could be the solution for their problems, certainly not offensively but maybe defensively.

#3 – Phoenix Suns

The Suns remain red hot. 2nd best record of the league so far, even with the loss to the Hornets on Thursday which shouldn’t be a shock because every time that the Suns are dominated on the boards, they lose, and it’s a lock just like that.

#4 – Los Angeles Lakers

Gasol is back and that means the Lakers should make their push to the league’s best record now. With the Spanish Center there, they are just so tough to beat, they are big and physical.

#5 – Orlando Magic

With Rashard Lewis back, they become a matchup nightmare again. The win against the Celtics highlighted that. Vince Carter is coming alive, against Boston he scored 26, turned the ball over a lot but took the game over in the end and that what you expect from your superstar and the reason why Orlando traded for him.

#6 – Denver Nuggets

Carmelo Anthony has been terrific so far and put himself in the MVP race however they are still not on the same level as last season. Their defense has been OK but when Billups doesn’t play well, all of a sudden nobody else but Carmelo produces.

#7 – Dallas Mavericks

Nowitzki has been carrying them because the bunch of injuries already started, Marion and Howard haven’t played together for a decent amount of time, and it’s not close to end.

#8 – Boston Celtics

On back-to-backs they look old. The loss against the Magic can be faced as a problem but when healthy, they are still the best team in the NBA. The question is: for how long will they remain healthy?

#9 – Milwaukee Bucks

The Jenningsmania is all over the NBA, even in this Power Rankings.

#10 – Portland Trail Blazers

Travis Outlaw is out with the same injury that held Webster for the entire season last year and that’s a hit on their second unit. The 3 men backcourt has survived so far but maybe is time to trade Miller.

#11 – Miami Heat

As Wade goes, they go which means that so far, they are a playoff team.

#12 – Houston Rockets

Even I’m convinced that this team needs somebody who can create his own shots on clutch moments. That guy is neither Ariza nor Brooks. Hopefully McGrady won’t screw the good vibe around the team.

#13 – Oklahoma City Thunder

When those four guys score, they are tough to hold. Lately even when they lose, they are on the game until the end. As the season progresses, they progress and the Western Conference should watch out.

#14 – Utah Jazz

With Williams back and Boozer stepping up, the Jazz won all three games this week including one against the Spurs which was their first in San Antonio in 20 games.

#15 – Toronto Raptors

They won 42% of their games. With all the money spent in this team and with playoff expectations around them, they have to perform better.

#16 – San Antonio Spurs

Ginobili and Parker out this week, injuries caught with them like expected. They always start slow, so no worry there.

#17 – Chicago Bulls

Derrick Rose has struggled a lot and that’s a real problem. This is a team that has a lot of variations and formations but it’s only 8 deep.

#18 – Indiana Pacers

They are who we thought they were: a .500 team.

#19 – Detroit Pistons

With Hamilton and Prince out, they have been able to hang in there but the problems are the same, lack of size inside and no rebounders, and when they face decent competition, that’s a problem.

#20 – Sacramento Kings

They are 5-7. Can you believe that?! The Kings won 41.7% of their games and that’s crazy. Tyreke Evans and Omir Caspi have been big so far.

#21 – Los Angeles Clippers

Yes, they have been a disappointment but when Gordon and Griffin return, they should be better. The push to the playoffs is yet to come but Kaman has played the best basketball of his career and Baron Davis is finally finding himself on that offense. Their second unit is amazing.

#22 – New Orleans Hornets

Without Chris Paul and with the new coach, they played well this week. Rookies getting more playing time and when Stojakovic shows up to play, they are not that bad. It’s tough to see them over .500 though.

#23 – Philadelphia 76ers

They are the ones to open a playoff spot on the East. They face problems on offense and defense. With Brand there, they haven’t been as committed to Iguodala on offense which they should if they want to save the season.

#24 – Golden State Warriors

Jackson is gone and the Warriors got cap relief instead. They’ll play shorthanded for the rest of the season but Don Nelson likes it this way. Nelson who, by the way, is 23 wins away from his record which means he’s 23 wins away from retirement what could mean that next season, maybe the Warriors will be OK.

#25 – Charlotte Bobcats

Probably the dumbest team in the NBA. The franchise is for sale but yet they took on Jackson’s awful contract in a move that won’t make them better than those teams they are fighting.

#26 – Memphis Grizzlies

Iverson is now gone for good. It’s time for them to translate talent into wins.

#27 – Washington Wizards

They have been the most disappointing team so far.

#28 – New York Knicks

Apparently they refused going after Allen Iverson, which would at least entertain us, because of Eddie Curry and Toney Douglas. I have no words for that.

#29 – Minnesota Timberwolves

They miss Kevin Love but as expected they would be bad anyway.

#30 – New Jersey Nets

They have been banged up but nothing justifies that awful start. Douglas Roberts is back, so is Harris, which means the offense should be better but the 0-17 start looks real.

Thanks for showing up, Hedo “fourth quarter” Turkoglu, and thanks for bringing your buddies. The Raps entered the final 12 this afternoon tied, but watched a crew of Orlando scrubs led by J.J. Redick run wild and put it away before Superman and Vince Carter got back on the floor, winning 104-96. Turkoglu, Toronto’s supposed difference maker this season, finished 3-of-11 for 12 points against his former team.

This was a tough game, but one the Raptors could’ve won if they’d played to their strengths. Chris Bosh drew a couple first quarter fouls on Dwight Howard, then decided to loft jumpers the rest of the game. CB finished with 22 points on 10-of-22 shooting and grabbed five boards. Andrea Bargnani, in foul trouble most of the day and ineffective offensively when on the floor, led the Raptors with nine boards.

Turkoglu’s the guy that’s really getting to me, though. Early in the fourth with the game tied, Jason Williams found Marcin Gortat underneath for a layup that Turkoglu didn’t even both contesting, despite Gortat missing a pair of free throws minutes earlier. Yeah, and thanks Matt Devlin for pointing out that we brought him in because he shot 42% in the playoffs last year. That’s an impeccable number.

After a rough first half, Carter did his usual second half damage against Toronto, finishing with 24 points — 18 on 7-of-12 in the final two quarters. Redick had the second-best game of his career (the best coming at the ACC a few weeks ago), finishing with 19 and five assists.

The loss drops the Raptors to 6-8, with the Pacers coming to Toronto on Tuesday.

I see you’re not gonna sit this one out with an “injury”, hey Vince? Alright, I’d be lying to myself if I said Carter didn’t love coming to Toronto and torching the Raptors. Air Canada and the Magic are in for the second time this season, tipping at 12:30 this afternoon at the ACC. As always, check out the full preview over at Raptors Republic.

I honestly believed coming into this season Orlando would be worse off with Carter than Hedo Turkoglu, but as much as it kills me to say it, I was wrong. Vince seems to have found the perfect scenario — one where he’s not pressured to be the top guy, or better yet, one where he can routinely take nights off and people won’t notice because Rashard Lewis and Superman will pick up the slack. Yeah, Turkoglu was killer in the clutch, but Vince has been known to hold up alright come crunch time when he feels like it. The Magic, behind Carter’s 18.1 points per game, come in at 10-3, including a 125-116 win in Toronto on Nov. 1.

As usual, the key for the Raptors will be D’ing up, especially on the perimeter against a team like Orlando. The Magic drilled 17 threes in their previous win over Toronto, and that came without Carter, who’s averaging almost three per game. Chris Bosh & co. will also do well to attack Dwight Howard early and try to get him in foul trouble.

Anyway, fresh off a home win over Miami Friday, it would be nice to make it two and a row with a walk in the park coming in the form of Indiana on Tuesday.

Despite the pain of depriving myself of sleep in order to watch the Knicks slump to their worst ever

Despite the pain of depriving myself of sleep in order to watch the Knicks slump to their worst ever start to an NBA season, week 4 gave me reason for hope. Why? Well, the Knicks only had two games on their schedule meaning, even if they lost both, their streak of losing three games every week would definitely come to an end.

As it turned out, the Knicks beat both the Indiana Pacers and the lowly New Jersey Nets on the road to creep towards the cusp of semi-respectability with a less-embarrassing-than-we-are-used-to three wins and nine losses.

The key to victory in Indiana was so clear even I, watching bleary-eyed in London at 2am, was able to spot it. Trailing by 19 points in the third quarter, the Knicks finally started to play consistent defence and make some shots.

In a picture-perfect reversal of their loss to the Pacers on November 4, the Knicks sparked a heartening rally, outscoring their hosts 27-7 in the final seven minutes 30 secnds of fourth quarter to record a much-needed 110-103 win. They forced the Pacers to shoot a miserable 25% in the game’s final stanza, stifling and frustrating Danny Granger to such a degree that the Pacers’ chief scorer fouled out.

On the offensive end, the Knicks bench outscored Indiana’s second unit 65-22 with Al Harrington firing a team-high 26 points, including three fourth quarter 3-pointers that instigated the game-winning comeback. Larry Hughes’ player of the game performance featured 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

The Indiana victory also marked the return of troubled center Eddy Curry who, having shed 50 pounds, literally looked like a shadow of himself. I’m not wholly convinced it was actually Curry on the court.

The slimmed-down big man claiming to Curry looked exactly like Eddy Curry except for the addition of a thin goatee on his chin. It reminded me of Bender’s nemesis Flexo in Futurama, a robot who looked identical to his rival save for a tiny piece of chin-hair. Either way Curry/Flexo Curry looked surprisingly good in a 12-minute cameo that yielded 10 points and four rebounds. The big man has a long way to go to get back to maximum match fitness but , after all his problems, it was good to see him back and looking able to provide an inside scoring punch.

The three-day gap between the Pacers and Nets games was filled with speculation surrounding the potential signing of free agent Allen Iverson. After an initial flirtation, Donnie Walsh surprised most observers by passing on the former MVP. It’s a good job he did this. After preaching patience and the need to development his core of young players, the addition of AI would not only have robbed the likes of Wilson Chandler and Toney Douglas of minutes and shots but would have made Walsh look indecisive, panic-ridden and, at worst, a hypocrite.

Saying no to The Answer allowed Walsh to stick steadfastly to his long-term plan and show a degree of faith in his young stars. Iverson bringing his me-first ball-hog act to the Garden may have given the Knicks a handful of extra wins this year but the potential for locker room disruption – as witnessed in Memphis – would have been huge. To my mind, Walsh made the right choice.

When a team is on a historically bad losing streak, no-one wants to be their first victim. That fear placed pressure on the Knicks as they faced the 0-12 New Jersey Nets, who were boosted by the return of their best player Devin Harris. With a West Coast swing looming, playing the Knicks at home offered the Nets their best chance of recording a victory before they approach 0-17, the league’s worst ever start held, somewhat predictably, by the 1998 LA Clippers.

The usual deathly silence of the Izod Center was replaced by some relatively raucous travelling Knicks fans who witnessed a fairly comfortable win for their team.

The Knicks shot 45% to lead 52-43 at the half. The offence was balanced with Harrington, Danilo Gallinari and Larry Hughes mixing drives to the hoop with outside shooting. It wasn’t such a good night for Nate Robinson who raised the ire of Mike D’Antoni by jacking up a three point towards his own basket at the end of the first quarter. With only half a second left on the clock, Nate launched the shot just after the buzzer. The shot swished home and a beaming Nate returned to the bench. The smile was wiped off his face by a raging D’Antoni who, after berating Robinson, benched him for the rest of the game. Was it an overreaction from the coach or a way to instill the need to focus into all his players? Probably both.

The Knicks extended their lead to 15 points by the middle of the third and, save for a Chris Douglas-Roberts-inspired fourth quarter 16-2 rally that bought the Nets within two, held on fairly comfortably for a 98-91 win. A 3-point dagger from Harrington, who seems to save his best performances for games against the Nets, sealed the deal. David Lee, who combined with Chris Duhon for some crucial baskets down the stretch, finished with 16 points and 12 boards.

A record of three and nine certainly isn’t anything to boast about but, with a home match-up against Boston and road games in Los Angeles and Denver coming up, winning both games this week provides D’Antoni’s men with a much needed boost. They’ll need all the confidence and luck they can muster over the next seven days.

Here is an example of one of the free picks for tomorrow.

Free College Football Sports Betting Pick for Saturday November 20th

TCU Vs Wyoming

TCU showed the world last week that they deserve the top ranking they have. They jumped to #4 in the country and with that came an inflated line. TCU has struggled a bit on the road in November (4-9-1 ATS). Wyoming is 13-5 ATS off a SU win and 5-1 ATS at home with revenge off a straight up and ATS win. Letdown is a real possibility with this inflated line.

Play: Wyoming +31.5
