Speaking of patterns, two of my favorite patterns you can find in this piece called “experience, period”: sewing patterns and envelope linings. And last week I used a sewing pattern the way it was intended, and made a dress for little Mitra on her first birthday. I love the way it turned out – very vintage (and I learned a lot while doing it – e.g. the first time, follow the instructions. the second time, improve them.) I definitely must make one for Millie once she is big enough to walk (long time in the future, I know, but crawling in dresses sucks.)

Imagine a joke so funny you can’t stop laughing for a month. Paper stronger than steel. An apple the size of a hotel. A jet engine quieter than a moth beating its wings. A home-cooked meal for 25,000 people.

Try exaggerating your idea. Think big: what is it were a thousand times bigger, louder, stronger, faster, or brighter? What if the number of people who could use it were increased a thousandfold?

Now think small: what if it were only one-thousandth as powerful, fast, costly, or complicated as before?

One of my most favorite items we have in our store, Bambu Batu, is the spork. Half spoon – half fork, this little hybrid is truly ingenious. I have one in each of my purses, so I don’t have to remember to move my spork when I use a different purse.

The only thing that bothered me, was that it was floating around between all the other stuff that is carried around in a purse (you don’t want to know…) and when it came time to use it, more often than not it needed to be cleaned thoroughly before use and I felt bad throwing it back into the purse after I was done with it. Some customers told us that they keep theirs in a plastic bag, but that’s like carrying a plastic fork around…

Something needed to be done. I noticed that the spork happens to be the same size as a standard business card. And I had a beautiful hand-made business card holder. But it only had one pocket. So I started looking around to find one with two pockets – but without success. So I set out to make my own. The first ones were made from fabric swatches of out-dated furniture fabric swatch books, but I’m working on a whole new set of designs with much prettier fabrics.

So, speaking of exaggerating – if I could convince 1000 people to use a spork every time they get take-out or for their lunchbox, that would be something! I can’t imagine making a thousand spork pockets at this point, but I’m up for the challenge! Who’s in?

Wonderland @ Ministry of Sound, London – Saturday 24th October 2009 – REVIEW

When Pete Tong announced he was taking his brand new Ibiza night Wonderland to Eden back in 2008 there were gasps of horror at the thought of the top DJ abandoning swish superclub Pacha in favour of San Antonio’s less swanky offering. But the move proved to be extremely fruitful (not only for Eden) with the Wonderland brand growing massively and now featuring all over the world at festivals and clubs.

On my first trip back to the buzzing capital city of London, this time as a proper grown-up, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to hit some of the biggest clubs in the country and of course there was no competition on discovering Pete Tong’s Wonderland night was on – Ministry of Sound it was!

I’d heard the area the club was in wasn’t the best but jumping out the taxi on arrival and being greeted with a thumping bass line and huge quirky Ministry of Sound posters, the dark industrial setting only made the club ooze with even more coolness.

A huge courtyard fills the outdoor space where smokers can listen to funky house beats while dabbling in their guilty pleasure but preferring to spend the chilly October evening in the warmth we headed inside up a long corridor and stood for a moment to take in our surroundings.

You could mistake the Main Bar for the main room it’s so huge, plus the great electro tunes coming from We’re Not Cool in the DJ box signalled main room carnage. It was only upon realising it was Chris Lake who should be warming up the decks for Pete Tong we noticed the stream of people weaving their way through the crowd towards a sign labelled Box so we followed.

Entering the Box we were suitably impressed – this was what main room action was all about. A bespoke sound system ensured the bass lines were of the finest quality as Chris Lake warmed up the decks for Wonderland’s main man. Throwing some of our best dance moves amongst the eager crowd we were treated to an audio-visual display surrounded by Wonderland themed décor and it wasn’t long before Pete Tong himself took over the decks and treated the animated crowd to a seamless set of expertly blended house and techno.

Having missed Wonderland in Ibiza it was exciting getting to see what all the fuss was about and it definitely wasn’t without reason. Pete Tong knows how to put on a show and Ministry of Sound is the perfect setting – the fact it’s open till 7am is an added perk – only in London!

Pioneer revealed their CDJ 2000’s to the world, live on webcam from the Pacha terrace. We were there, and got to try them before everybody else, and they are really amazing. I hope that they will become the industry standard in not so long! Yes, the CDJ 1000’s are also really amazing, but to be able to travel with just an usb stick….duh! Insane!

Sarah Main, one of Pacha Ibiza’s resident Dj’s is also a Pioneer ambassadeur, so she was there to present the cd players together with the Pioneer crew, and to interview some of the Dj’s that were present that night.

Defected’s ‘Def.Com’ compilations will always remind me of my first (and so far only) car crash, as I was listening to Powerhouse’s ‘What You Need’ at the time that my 2 week old Fiesta ploughed into the side of an old lady’s Honda after she’d pulled out on me… I cared about the CD so much, that I sent my dad down to the salvage yard to eject and retrieve it from the CD player. And I listened to it on repeat while I laid up, unable to walk for 3 months.

Just thought I’d share this Defected video with you… No real reason behind it, just sit back and enjoy the music that one of the most prolific and superb labels has brought us over the last 10 years.

Yep, it’s that time of the year again. Time to be creative. And the cool thing is that you get one more hour tonight as we fall back into the winter time. What are you going to do with that extra hour?

I know I will be cuddling with my little pumpkin and thinking about the things to come, getting a head start on my New Year’s resolution. I was asked if I’d like to present some marketing workshops for artists and other creative people, focusing on topics like social networking, branding and email marketing to promote your art and crafts successfully. So, I’m preparing a series of hands-on seminars for the coming spring and I’d like to get your input.

The idea is not only to hear me talk about how to do things, but to get things done. Participating artists will work on their own marketing materials during the workshop and receive advice and input from me and guest artists on the spot. We will share individual steps with the group and get feedback right away. You will go home with a ton of information and the feeling that you actually accomplished something already. If you don’t have a media kit yet, or no idea how to get started with facebook, twitter and the like, this series will be for you.

For example, having just returned from a couple months of backpacking through Mexico, Cuba and Belize a few years ago, I decided to draw my very own world map. It greatly improved my geography knowledge and now hangs in our bedroom. Roaaar…
