Il rapporto tra musica e matematica, è questo il presupposto ideologico che ha spinto gli organizzatori  del IX Congresso della Società Italiana Storia delle Matematiche  ad includere  nel programma il concerto del sestetto de “i Solisti di Perugia” e del gruppo vocale, “Armoniosoincanto” diretto dal maestro, Franco Radicchia. Il cartellone prevede musiche di: Dufay, Lasso, Bach, Pachelbel e Pedini. Si comincerà con il Mottetto di Guillaume Dufay. L’opera si chiama: “Nuper rosarum flores” che fu scritta da Dufay nel 1436 e suonata in occasione della cerimonia di consacrazione della Cupola del Brunelleschi della cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore a Firenze. Il mottetto sarà cantato “a cappella” (sole voci) dal coro Armoniosoincanto e la stessa opera rivista nel 2005, dal compositore perugino Carlo Pedini, per coro e orchestra d’archi. In chiusura di concerto, quindi, la corale e il sestetto de “i Solisti di Perugia”. Il pubblico, quindi, avrà la possibilità di ascoltare la stessa melodia rielaborata secondo moduli matematici. Il secondo brano in programma è “Il Canone” di Carlo Pedini, opera che richiama – con il suo stesso nome – una formula matematica. Una forma musicale che fa passare, attraverso le voci, uno stesso tema che si rincorre attraverso i diversi solisti. Tanto per fare un esempio, il Canone più famoso è quello di “Fra’ Martino Campanaro”, dove una stessa melodia, ad una distanza esatta, è ripetuta tante volte creando una sovrapposizione che è, però, sempre consonante. Un gioco matematico perfetto, come lo è anche una “fuga”. Il tema, Pedini lo trae da una sua stessa opera: “Un giorno qualunque”. Con stile da “divertissement”, il compositore scrisse il Canone nel 2000 dedicandolo per l’appunto a i Solisti di Perugia. “Nel 2001 – ricorda Maria Cecilia Berioli, vicepresidente dell’Associazione i Solisti di Perugia – lo suonammo ad Atene in occasione delle celebrazioni della festa della Repubblica”. Il terzo brano sarà rappresentato da una prima esecuzione assoluta, anche qui un Canone, il cui tema è stato tratto da una grande opera concettuale di Johan Sebastian Bach: “Offerta musicale di Bach”. Si tratta di una raccolta musicale formata da due fughe, dieci canoni e una trio sonata a quattro frasi, dalla quale Carlo Pedini ha tratto il tema sul quale costruire il Canone. L’Offerta musicale di Bach non era stata destinata ad alcuno strumento. Tutto il materiale (di Bach) è basato su un tema musicale ideato dal re di Prussia Federico il Grande. Bach rielaborò il tema dato dal re in fughe per tre e sei voci e aggiunse una quantità di canoni, nei quali introdusse ogni difficoltà possibile per questa forma musicale, come una trio sonata per flauto, violino e basso continuo, in cui compare anche il “tema reale”. Il 7 luglio egli concluse l’opera e la dedicò al re di Prussia col nome di “Offerta musicale“. A settembre la raccolta era stampata, ma non fu mai destinata ad alcuno strumento. E’ una sorta di opera omnia della grande arte di Johan Sebastian Bach. Carlo Pedini ha, in sostanza, preso lo spunto da un “ricercare a sei”, contenuto in questa grande opera del compositore tedesco.

Il coro tornerà nuovamente a cantare a cappella – senza strumenti, quindi -, in “Bicinia” di Orlando Di Lasso (Roland de Lassus). Si tratta di canti a due voci relativi a composizioni di tipo aritmetico. Le voci si incontrano in stile contrappuntistico, in modo vario, e sempre creando delle figure geometriche.

Il concerto, , sarà chiuso dal Mottetto Nuper rosarum flores, rielaborato da Carlo Pedini sull’originale di Guillaume Dufay, cantato dalla corale e suonato dal sestetto de i Solisti di Perugia.

Il Canone di Pachelbel ( Norimberga 1653 -1706 ) ha stimolato la sensibilità e creatività di molti musicisti, anche dilettanti che ne hanno sviluppato versioni in chiave rock da presentare in concerto su palcoscenico o, più frequentemente, su internet^[1].
Le prime versioni moderne del Canone di Pachelbel alla chitarra elettrica sono state eseguite dai musicisti Joe Satriani e Yngwie Malmsteen., ma furono in effetti gli Aphrodite’s Child con Demis Roussos quale cantante solista nel  1968 ( e chi non lo ricorda ! )  ad ispirarsi al Canone  quando composero il  brano  Rain and Tears , ben noto ai frequentatori delle discoteche negli anni 60/70, e non si trattò nemmeno di un plagio poiché nell’etichetta del 45 giri tra gli autori venne riportato proprio Pachbel.
Il Canone venne composto nel 1680 ( Barocco ) per soli strumenti a corda ( violini e basso ) ma successivamente  il brano venne arrangiato per una maggiore varietà strumentale fino a raggiungere la forma di brano orchestrale.

Ci sono canzoni che ti trovano per caso e, per me, “Prima che cambierà” è una di queste.
Pier Cortese è un giovanissimo cantautore che ripercorre la tradizione romana dei testi ben scritti, fatti di parole che sanno toccare le corde giuste.
Nel 2000 partecipa alla sezione musicale del Giffoni film festival, e lo premia un meritatissimo secondo posto. Nel 2005 il successo del singolo Souvenir, seguito nel 2007 da una partecipazione sfortunata nella categoria giovani del Festival di San Remo.
Due soli album per questo grande autore: “Contraddizioni” (Universal, 2006) ed il recentissimo “Nonostante tutto continuiamo a giocare a calcetto” (Universal, 2009).
Apripista di quest’ultimo lavoro è la canzone “Grazie”.
Una parola importante, che spesso dimentichiamo di usare.
Una parola forse “fuori moda”, che l’autore, che nel cognome porta un marchio di fabbrica, con delicatezza ci ricorda.

Trust me. I know it’s a guy with a mic and a guitar, but it’s completely related.

A few months ago, bride and groom, Jill and Kevin Heinz, entertained us all with the viral video of their wedding march to Chris Brown’s “Forever”. Though this video was wildly popular (getting over 25 million hits on YouTube) a choreographed dance to a pop song isn’t for everyone’s wedding. Looking for something more traditional for your ceremony, but finding classical music to be a bit daunting? Well rest easy. Before you meet with musicians, take a look – and a listen – to my starter suggestions of classical ceremony pieces:

Prelude Music: used as guests are being seated for the ceremony, which can take up to 30 minutes

Air on the G String (Bach)
One of my personal favorites! Beautiful as a string quartet.

Chorale Prelude: Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach)
This piece can also be played on strings or a piano.

Processional Music: signals the beginning of the ceremony, including seating of the parents, bridal party, (sometimes of the grandparents), and finally the bride walking down the aisle

Trumpet Tune (Purcell)
You will feel like an actual princess walking down the aisle to this song.

Trumpet Voluntary The Prince Of Denmark March (Purcell)
The trumpets sound gorgeous and are a nice alternative to the more standard string instruments.

Cannon in D (Pachelbel)
Can also work as a processional, recessional, and postlude.

Bridal Chorus (Wagner)
You can’t go wrong with the classic Here Comes The Bride.

Interlude Music: generally a vocalist will sing these songs as the bride and groom give flowers to their parents, light a unity candle, etc.

Ave Maria (Schubert)
If you would like to add a modern spin to this classic, check out Beyonce’s version.

Recessional Music: played after bride and groom have been pronounced man and wife

Wedding March (Mendelssohn)
A timeless song for the couple to exit the ceremony as newlyweds to.

Ode To Joy (Beethoven)
The last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is an elegant piece.

Postlude Music: played until all guests have exited the ceremony

Water Music (Handel)
A lovely piece to end the ceremony with.

Gratis museum var lukket. Istedenfor testede vi kabelbanen fra Montjuïc til Paral·lel, det var ikke vaerst. I dag ville jeg paa MACBA, Museet for Samtidskunst – har vaeret der foer, men kun til rundvisning (paa spansk) i de to nederste etager, broed mig egentlig ikke om vaerkerne, men man skal som man siger ikke skue galleriet paa haarene – men saa kom jeg susansparkeme ogsaa for sent til det. Ugens tema er tilsyneladende lyd/larm – har bl.a. hoert verdens elendigste version af Pachelbels Canon (lad nu det stykke vaere i fred, folkens) oppe i Parc Güell, en meget queer og meget beruset lyrikoplaesning/solokoncert med halvnoegen performer i et ungdomshusagtigt hus i El Raval (det var sjovt), et seks mand stort traditionelt mexicansk juhuorkester sammesteds (det var ret flot og slet ikke saa klichéfyldt som jeg havde frygtet), alt for mange daarlige djs og lige nu lytter jeg til Vladislav Delay (som jeg paa det kraftigste vil anbefale omverdenen) paa pakistansk internetcafé.

Saa en meget flot veganer i dag men turde ikke sige hej.

So rund und flüssig klingt unsere Version von Pachelbels “Canon in D” noch nicht, aber das kann ja noch werden.

So I started thinking about songs that have chords similar to Pachelbel’s Canon in D and then I looked at the calender and I just had to record this song. I tried singing it really, really seriously at first…but the lyrics are so trite, so cliche that I couldn’t do it. I don’t mean to be offensive, just obnoxious. This song’s just SO stupid.

El Canon (cuyo nombre completo es Canon y Giga en re mayor para tres y bajo continuo; en el original alemán: Kanon und Gigue in D-Dur für drei Violinen und Basso Continuo) es la obra más conocida del compositor de música barroca alemán Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706). Pachelbel escribió esta obra alrededor de 1680.

La versión original es interpretada por tres violines que tocan sobre la melodía del bajo. Al inicio, el bajo solo toca dos compases, que, de acuerdo a la técnica del bajo continuo, se interpreta con el acorde. En el primer compás, el primer violín ejecuta la primera variación. En el segundo compás, ejecuta la segunda variación, mientras que el segundo violín arranca con la primera variación. En el tercer compás, el primer violín comienza la tercera variación, el segundo la segunda, el tercero la primera, y se sigue esa pauta.

La complejidad de la estructura del Canon aumenta hacia la parte central de la pieza cuando las variaciones se van haciendo más complejas. Después, la pieza vuelve gradualmente a una estructura menos compleja. En total hay 28 variaciones.

Estrictamente hablando la obra no es un canon sino, más bien, un chaconne o un passacaille, estando basada, tanto armónica como estructuralmente, sobre un ostinato en la línea de bajo de dos compases. El ostinato se repite 28 veces, siendo los acordes de la obra: re mayor (tónica), la mayor (dominante), si menor (tónica paralela), fa# menor (dominante paralela), sol mayor (subdominante), re mayor (tónica), sol mayor (subdominante) y la mayor (dominante).

And by that, no, I don’t mean the long things which pirates use to shoot at rival ships, no, not at all at all.

Again, this is a music post, so here’s a quick explanation for those of you who haven’t been shot yet (and I’m looking at one person in particular, he really deserves to be shot).
A canon is a style of piece in which the melody is picked up by one instrument, then another picks up the same melody a certain number of bars afterwards, and again, so on and so forth. It works a bit like a round.
The Canon everyone knows, and the one I’m talking about today, is Pachelbel’s Canon in D. It’s a melody most people can hum, and it was put in my head last week or so by Grannymar, who was talking about Religion and Spirituality.

Here’s the canon itself, cunningly played with sheet music in the video, so you can get the gist of how it works. Magical stuff. Always makes me think of weddings, I’m not quite sure why.

Anyways, Claire had a sheet of the canon when we were in Rostrevor. Being a transposing instrument, it tends to be hard to a) keep your place and b) transpose on sight, especially at the same time. Transposing means what’s written on the page isn’t actually what you play, this is for the benefit of the person I mentioned earlier.
So, as I had the sax out, and I just can’t transpose from C to Eflat without thinking really hard about it, I played the bass line, the ‘cello line, when we were jamming.
I’ll leave Rob Paravonian explain to you just what’s so great about that ‘cello line.

Anyways, so there was me, playing away with the ‘celli, happy as Larry.

The flutes, on the other hand, were having a bit of trouble.
Now, firstly, flutes play in C, how easy is that? Secondly, they had music in front of them. Thirdly, the music in front of them was actually in C, so I should expect that they would have been grand playing the melody. What’s more, they took it second, so they should’ve been flying.

But, well, in thinking this, I forgot that all flute players are vapid, brainless, typical blonde, self-centred, silly gits.
So, naturally, they couldn’t keep up with where they were supposed to be.
Then, as they were playing their own parts, they got lost. And they couldn’t look to other flautists for help, ’cause once one flute player gets lost, the rest of them do, too. Flautists are sheep.

So, flautists are standing slightly confused, they listen to Claire, conductor of the orchestra, violinist, leader of the jamming group and general all-around good guy. They figure out where she is, and start to play along.
This is where brainless sheep comes in. These are flautists we’re talking about. Instead of finding where Claire is and then counting two bars to find their own cue, they start to play what she’s playing. Then the poor younger violinists, confused and bewildered that they’re now on their own instead of having a nice comfort barrier of the flutes two ahead of them and then Claire four ahead, they think they’ve gotten lost and rush ahead to catch up as well, leading to everyone playing the same thing. Except, of course, the ‘celli and myself, who are still on their lovely plunk plunk plunk.

So, yeah, Pachelbel? He’s awesome. Flautists? Nahh, not so much.

Oh, and if you were wondering, the ‘cello line transposed into Eflat? A, E, G, D, E, B, E, F#…

A pesar de mis buenas intenciones, y aunque ya he entregado el cuento que tanto tiempo me ha quitado durante las últimas semanas y he aparcado el puzzle del Guernica hasta que las temperaturas nos den un respiro –en Gran Canaria llevamos tres días en alerta naranja–, en los últimos días apenas he podido encender el ordenador, ya que ando enfrascado en lo que he denominado la primera Operación Bricomanía de este verano.

Esta Operación Bricomanía consiste en vaciar una habitación cubierta de estanterías –llenas de libros, discos, cintas de VHS y dvds– en casi tres de sus cuatro paredes, tirar al suelo una de esas estanterías –que era de escayola–, pintarla, colocar las nuevas estanterías de madera y volver a colocarlo todo de nuevo, previa limpieza a fondo de todos y cada uno de los varios cientos de libros y demás objetos que aún se amontonan en el suelo del salón y la mesa que suelo usar para montar los puzzles.

Como el zafarrancho aún no ha concluido, pero me apetecía pasarme por aquí, aprovecho la ocasión para compartir una historia rápida que, advierto, no es nueva, pero sí bastante divertida. Se trata de una actuación en la que el cómico estadounidense Rob Paravonian  desvela que el secreto del éxito de muchas canciones de los últimos tiempos se remonta a 1680, año en el que, aproximadamente, Johann Pachelbel compuso su famoso Canon en re mayor. 

Tanto si ya conocían la truculenta relación de Paravonian con el Canon [en], como si no, espero que estos minutos de humor musical les hayan servido para olvidar el calor de estos días.
