Problem is, a fair stab of the time he doesn’t half miss the mark. Not empirically, his batting average is admittedly a hazy positive, but when he’s wrong, he’s other-side-of-the-moon wrong. Case in point? “WoW won’t wow gamers.” – Michael ‘Egg On His Face’ Pachter.

As an analyst you can’t be right half of the time – it refutes the point of his entire job, which could therefore be replaced with a simple 10p coin. Ultimately, he is a mirage of a need, a figurehead and manifestation of our subconscious voice that helps us substantialize the entire medium, when, by now, we should no longer need it. We need Pachter so we can claim “we have an analyst, so we’re grown-up now, nerr nerr.” He fills a pretend void that’s been crafted by our own low self esteems. We do have video game analysts, that is not a breed in danger of extinction, and they’ll continue to exist, despite Pachter’s claim that “the video game industry is in a state of persistent secular decline”, but it seems like every blog and website from here to Helsinki has to quote every misjudged and ill-mannered piece of guesswork that plops from his socket of a mouth. And that very claim wouldn’t bother me as much – I could barely care less about his musings on the best of days – if he didn’t then use this to explain it:

“…Publishers and developers of games have created more robust multiplayer content in recent years that has resulted in core gamers playing the same games for much longer, on average, than they did in the past, leading to lower sales of new games.”

Therein lies my gripe with the fellow; he is an analyst of sales and a plunderer of facts. His version of secular decline differs entirely from my own; the industry is declining because gamers aren’t buying new games straight away. Setting aside the urge to shout “HERP DERP” since that’s a trend caused by the world economy and the rising popularity of used game sales, it’s a theory based on his adaptation of “industry.” I’d say that adding more value to a game than the norm had past boasted would be an improvement. Now, games are  brimming with content, and it’s easier to rationalize the £40-odd you shell out for a piece of plastic. Any deviation away from the iterative Madden approach is a positive upward trend, if you ask me, and Pachter clearly knows not what he’s talking about, title be damned.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, for he is a trickster and a curr.

Resident Gametrailers loudmouth Michael Pachter predicted today that Microsoft’s 2010 project is poised to lead the industry in attachment rates.  Said Pachter, “With the inclusion of a controllerless game system Microsoft really need’s to find a way to gouge the end user for doodads he doesn’t need.“

Pachter went on to say that he expected Microsoft to artificially boost  attachments by raising the console failure rate by up to 10% to keep up with the lack of controller sales. This would bring the failure rate to nearly 40% of all consoles failing after a year of accumulated use.

“The controllerless console is actually really good news for microsoft, they’ll be selling a lot more lifetime warentees and elite versions.” He said while rubbing his palms together in glee.

‘Ik ben diepbeschaamd en begrijp dat De Lijn me wil ontslaan’, reageerde de man in een interview in deze krant. Naar eigen zeggen had hij de avond voordien een krat wijn van drie liter soldaat gemaakt, maar daarna had hij niets meer gedronken. Hij had alleen de fout gemaakt die bewuste dag niets te eten. 

Maar dat was januari. Nu raakte bekend dat de ontslagen chauffeur via een omweg toch weer met een lijnbus rondrijdt. Hij is aan de slag gegaan voor een privévervoersbedrijf dat busritten verzorgt in opdracht van De Lijn. Met medeweten én toestemming van De Lijn. Van de Vreken, woordvoerder van De Lijn pleit voor begrip. ‘Die man heeft zowat twintig jaar voor ons gewerkt en had een onberispelijke staat van dienst. Tot die positieve controle stond hij bekend als een voorbeeld voor andere chauffeurs. Daarom hebben we hem de toelating gegeven om nieuw werk te gaan zoeken bij een bedrijf dat voor ons ritten uitvoert. We hadden dat kunnen verbieden, maar omdat hij zo’n goede reputatie had, hebben we dat niet gedaan.’  Lees verder…

Ik heb er maar één woord voor: huichelachtig. Als hij dan toch zo’n goede werknemer is en ze hem een tweede kans gunnen, hadden ze hem ook gewoon op een andere dienst kunnen plaatsen. Het is heel erg om je job te verliezen, maar het is volgens mij nog erger om dronken (om het woord misdadig niet te gebruiken) met een bus vol mensen op de baan te zijn. Laten we nu hopen dat die persoon geen ongeval veroorzaakt en positief blaast. Dan ga je weer een hele hoop paraplutjes zien open gaan!

generell ist der Ansatz ganz interessant .. aber was ist wenn diese Mail von der Konkurrenz von Shell oder Total ausgeht .. (dann geht das ganze in die Hose, weil man danach evtl. einem grossen anderen Konzern  sowas wie eine Monopolstellung verschafft .. (Esso, BP, ARAL etc)

Der Konzerne könnte dann machen was er will ..

Also ich weiß nicht ob das wirklich eine gute Idee ist .. vielleicht sollte man sich auf kleine freie Tanken konzentrieren (die kaufen zwar auch bei den großen Gesellschaften, sind aber selber flexibeler und man zeigt der Industrie das es ein Ausweichverhalten weg von den Marken gibt – wird ggf. zu denken geben .. )

Ausserdem weniger Tanken pro Tankfüllung – dadurch wird das Geschäft an den Tankstellen personalaufwändiger, und keine Zeitschriften, etc mehr an Tankstellen kaufen dadurch fallen erheblich die Nebeneinkünfte und die Pächter müssen zum Überleben Druck auf die Konzerne ausüben …

Alles nicht schön für die Leute die Vorort arbeiten – und die im Grunde keine Schuld trifft – aber aus meiner Sicht der einzige Weg.
oder hab ich was übersehen – bzw. gibts noch andere bessere oder ergänzende Ideen ?

Ahead of March’s NPD Group sales data, due to release this Thursday, Pachter forecast PS3 sales of 365,000 units, edging out sales of 310,000 for Xbox 360.

In a Monday investor note, Pachter predicted that Nintendo will come out on top for yet another month, with Wii sales of 700,000 during March’s five-week retail period.

Pachter believes that Wii and DS supply improved during the month, adding that the Wii supply situation has “made forecasting unit sales quite difficult.” Pachter said a weak US dollar may have driven Nintendo to give a larger piece of the 1.8 million Wiis produced monthly to Europe at the expense of the US market.

“However,” Pachter wrote, “we believe that European supply has caught up with demand, and think that the company likely shipped the U.S. its “’fair share’ in the month of March, particularly in light of Nintendo’s need to support the launch of Super Smash Brothers Brawl.”

He said that Wii demand is “expected to outstrip supply well into 2008.”

The simExchange virtual stock exchange forecast Wii sales of 593,000, and PS3 and Xbox 360 sales of 301,000 and 296,000, respectively.

Software will also likely be the big story for March, as Pachter expects console software sales of $850 million, a 47 percent rise at US retail.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl from Nintendo is expected to be the top game for the month. The title, released on March 9, sold over 1.4 million units in the US in its first week. Pachter believes the title sold 2 million during the entire month.

Other top sellers may include Army of Two, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Major League Baseball 2K8 and catalog titles such as Wii Play, Guitar Hero III and Rock Band.

Wedbush Morgan’s game analyst, Michael Pachter, expressed my feelings on the ‘iPhone as gaming messiah’ in a simple point.

I don’t see it as a viable gaming platform, due to the cost of owning one. The iPhone costs $400 plus an AT&T wireless subscription for voice and data, I’m guessing this is $80 a month, so the addressable market doesn’t really fit the core gamer demographic.”

My issues with the touch screen, Apple’s inexperience, and bland game releases, all mean nothing compared to the all-mighty dollar.

Will you pay a $400 buy in and $80 a month for portable Spore? Or will you avoid it like the Noid?

Why, you can even find a nice tutorial on the web for how to make a great Tower Defense map for Warcraft III, which I imagine would make a great blueprint if you wanted to create Stephen Totilo’s Game of the Year 2007. Look! That tutorial even suggests that map developers create a Leaderboard!

Let’s not forget Stephen’s buddy, Michael Pachter. He’s an old real-time strategy guy. He played Heroes of Might and Magic (same article as the last link… further down). That’s one awesome real-time strategy game. A great game to play for the scores, anyway. Right? Or… not. I mean, he played them for 20 years on the PC, so he’s probably an authority by now. Maybe I’m the guy confused about what real-time means?

You know, it’s great that gaming has found its way to larger news entities and become so big that analysts follow it regularly.

It’s also pretty shitty that those of us who have followed it long enough to have seen all the trends come and go–played all the variants, delved deeply into all sorts of titles and the business of games, and written for national magazines–can’t make a buck writing about it. Meanwhile, these clowns have the gaming world hanging on their every word about some flash game that’s built on gameplay invented over four years ago in one of the most popular games in the industry they cover.

OK, yeah, that was pretty damn snarky and maybe just a little bit bitter.
